  • ‘Only Buhari can decide where Ministers should serve’

The Federal Parastatals and Private Sector Pensioners Association of Nigeria (FEPPPAN) has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to assign his nominees to any ministry of his choice, saying those against the return of Senator Chris Ngige as Minister of Labour and Employment should know that the responsibility lies solely with the President.

The association also commended the nominating Sen. Chris Ngige and Barr Sharon Ikeazor as ministers in his cabinet

President of FEPPPAN, Chief Temple Ubani, said in a statement in Abuja that the clash of personal interests are the reason some people are canvassing against the former minister of labour and employment being returned to the ministry.

“Nomination of Sen. Chris Ngige and Sharon Ikeazor, the former Executive Secretary of PTAD is a good step in the right direction, and we thank President Muhammadu Buhari for his wisdom in nominating them. Sen. Chris Ngige in particular, I have observed that nobody has faulted his reappointment in spite of some reports in the media saying that people are wailing about where he should be assigned to and where he shouldn’t.

“The good thing is that President Buhari, in his good plan to better the lives of Nigerians knows who will serve well and deliver on their mandate. I think he considered Ngige capable to deliver, and it will not be out of point to say that Ngige was a perfect match for the politics and intrigues in the labour world. And he performed excellently well even though some may have contrary opinion.

“For those that are saying he should not be assigned back to labour and employment ministry, it is a case of different folks and different strokes. Such statements are personal opinion which everyone is entitled to.

“In the first place, there are some people who were saying that Mr President should not in the first place reappoint somebody like Sen. Chris Ngige as a member of his cabinet. But that is simply someone trying to tell the president to serve personal interest. I think that people sometimes forget that there would always be clash of interest in human affairs. Because not for personal interest, I doubt if anybody can specifically point out where Ngige went against Nigerian workers, because I am aware that he assiduously worked for the success of new minimum wage. But thank God Mr President is not a tool anybody can control as wish.

It was still in progress at the time of filing this report.

  • Osinbajo: it’s time for a new beginning

President Muhammadu Buhari’s victory at the election, the nomination of notable persons from Anambra State into the federal cabinet, and the execution of important projects in the region is ushering in a new beginning, vision and direction for the region and its people, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has said.

A statement by his media aide, Laolu Akande, said Osinbajo spoke in Awka, Anambra State, during an All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders’ summit. He said the foundation has been laid for the region to move to the next level.

The Vice President noted that President Buhari had shown enough commitment to support the development of the Southeast and Anambra State in particular, through project execution and implementation of policies and programmes.

The statement reads: “In 2015, people were saying don’t join APC, it is a Northern party or Southwest party. So, some were not convinced that they should belong. It is time for a new beginning; it is time for a new vision, it is time for a new direction.

“I believe that Anambra has a special place in Mr. President’s heart. First, in his political career, the first two times he ran for President, his Vice Presidential nominees were from this state – the late Chuba Okadigbo (from Ekwueme Ogbunike) and Edwin Ume-Ezeoke (Amichi). Aside from that, I am glad that the chairman of our party has noted that the President has appointed Anambra indigenes and implemented projects – the Second Niger Bridge; Zik Mausoleum, (contract originally awarded in 1996, completed and opened by the Buhari administration); the 18km Onitsha/Awka Road, ongoing Onitsha/Enugu Expressway (Sukuk-funded), electrification project at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (making the campus one of the first Nigerian Universities to be given its own independent power supply provided by the Federal Government).

“Anambra is today one of the seven states that has two ministers in the present cabinet. In the Social Investment Programme – under the National Homegrown School Feeding Programme, the number of pupils currently being fed is put at 119,760 in 869 schools, while 1,045 cooks have been engaged.”

The Vice President, however, clarified that in order to guarantee transparency in the Social Investment Programmes, especially the N-Power programme, they are not executed along party lines.

“It is for Nigerians irrespective of which party you belong, under the N-Power, candidates have to fill the form online, you do not need to belong to our party. Under the N-Power scheme, Anambra has 16,348 beneficiaries while under the TraderMoni loan scheme, 30,774 loans have been disbursed. Under MarketMoni, 4,340 persons have benefitted, while 7,207 have been paid under the Conditional Cash Transfer scheme,” he said.

Osinbajo also urged party leaders and faithful to leverage on the good deeds of the Federal Government to work for the party’s growth ahead of future elections. “I am here to open a fresh chapter. Life is dynamic; things are moving on every day. Standing still or not moving is not an option. Anyone or group that fails to move in a dynamic environment will find that you are actually going backwards. Anambra State must move on,” he reiterated.

The meeting was attended by party leaders in the Southeast, including acting APC State Chairman, Chief Basil Ejidike; former Governor Chris Ngige; APC governorship candidate Tony Nwoye and National Auditor Sir George Moghalu. Former President of the Senate Ken Nnamani was represented by Eugene-Odo, former Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly.

  • Stakeholders to Buhari: Save Kogi now

The All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders in Kogi State at the weekend urged President Muhammadu Buhari to save the state by withdrawing support for the second term ambition of Governor Yahaya Bello.

The stakeholders, under the auspices of Kogi Emancipation Movement (KEM), urged the President not to release “any form of budget support” to Yahaya “between now and November when the governorship election will take place.”

They warned that the party would lose the election if it fielded Bello, because “the governor had nothing on which to anchor his second term quest.”

The group in a statement signed by its Convener, Apostle Eniola Williams, said it was “strange that Buhari and other leaders of the party at both national and state level have continued to show public support for, and even endorsement of Governor Yahaya Bello.”

According to it, Bello’s “only visible achievement is the obsolete street lights; even the revenue house that was commissioned by His Eminence, Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Saad Abubakar, the contractor is yet to be paid.”

The group claimed that “Contrary to a claim that Kogi State civil servants were being owed “only a few months’ salaries, the truth is that Governor Yahaya Bello does not pay workers their salaries by imposing a three-year lingering screening without end. And when he deigns to do that, he pays them in fractions and trickles. Consequently, he is owing 75 percent of state and local government genuine workers more than 40 months salaries.”

According to Williams, many Kogi civil servants “have died chasing their hard earned pay, while those who survived up to this moment are stuck between poor or little pay, or late and badly fractionalized pay.

“We therefore warn that APC will be thoroughly defeated if it fields Governor Yahaya Bello for the November 16, 2019 governorship poll in the state.

“He has done or said nothing to earn his party’s offer of right of first refusal.

“We feel strongly that the governor will not win the poll if he is fielded, but even if he could, he still should not run because of his dismal performance in his first term.”

The group cautioned President Buhari and the party hierarchy not to be deceived by Governor Bello’s assurances that he had the “tactics” to win, “such as he…deployed during the last presidential and legislative polls.”

It emphasized that “any attempt to field the incumbent governor will result in humiliating defeat for the APC as was the case in Adamawa and Bauchi States earlier in the year. “

The group urged the President, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, APC Chairman Adams Oshiomole, National Leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, “stalwarts from the state like Hajiya Salamatu Baiwa, Barrister Babatunde Irukera, Folasade Joseph” … to ensure that “a governor so unpopular…is not allowed to belittle the flag of the party by becoming its standard-bearer. “

The statement added: “The millions of people from Kogi are hopeless and helpless and their fate is in the hands of these people and what they do to save the state and repair their own reputation.  History and judgment await all in the future for actions or inactions.”

  • How we merged to defeat PDP in 2015, by Buhari

Four years after sweeping into office, President Muhammadu Buhari, has lifted the lid on the efforts that went into building the All Progressives Congress (APC) into a winning party.

Four parties – Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) – dissolved into what became APC ahead of the 2015 elections.

Buhari says all the four parties came to the “painful realisation” that none of them could defeat PDP as separate entities hence the need for them to merge.

The significance of the merger, according to him, was underscored by the fact that the future of Nigeria was tied to it.

Buhari shares his view in a July 2019 foreword to a book, “Power of Possibility and Politics of Change in Nigeria” by the Director-General of Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), Comrade Salihu Mohammed Lukman.

The President said he spoke with the National Leader of APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and Chief Bisi Akande at the commencement of the merger negotiations about the need to have a broad-based national political party

He said if the opposition parties had failed, it would be difficult to imagine what would have happened to them.

He said as at the time the merger talks got underway, only the Southwest was a secured constituency.

The book, which is yet to be launched, has been made available to all APC leaders at all levels, governors and other stakeholders.

Going into the details of the emergence of the APC, the president said: “At one point, we in the four former opposition parties, the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), and All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), came to the painful realisation that there was no way we could defeat the then ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as separate entities without coming together as a united force.

“So, having agreed to come together, we decided to set up committees to look into how we can best merge to form a formidable opposition party. After that each of the four parties developed the terms of reference for the committees on the modalities of the negotiations for the merger.

“We, however, made it clear that none of the committees has the power to take any final decision on the merger. Their work was mainly to discuss with their party members and report the outcome of the discussion to the leadership of their parties.

“The understanding was that the final decision regarding how to go about the merger would be made by the executives of each of the parties. We wanted to make the process as democratic as possible.”

The President said the merger was significant in the nation’s history and ought to be a major research question.

He disclosed the merger template he discussed with the National Leader of APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and the Interim (pioneer) National Chairman of the new party, Chief Bisi Akande.

He said if the merger had failed, Nigeria would have been worse for it.

“The decision to come together and agree to merge to become a strong opposition party that will face PDP was historic. In my reckoning, it was one of the most significant political development in contemporary Nigerian political history. I hope historians will record the events correctly,” he stressed.

“I would recall speaking to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and Chief Bisi Akande at the commencement of the merger negotiations about the need to have a broad-based national political party, because at that point the South-West geopolitical zone of the country was the only secured constituency, while there were sharp divisions in the other geopolitical zones (North West, North East, North Central, the South East and the South South).

“We eventually succeeded in coming together. It was a major sacrifice made by the leadership of the respective political parties. And the significance of this event was underscored by the fact that the future of Nigeria was tied to it. Which is why for historians and political scientists, it becomes a major research question.

“I always wonder what would have been the political, economic and security consequences to the country without the merger of the old opposition parties and seizing political power from the ruling PDP democratically.

“I wonder how many people have taken the time to reflect on this development and make projections as to what could have happened if the opposition had failed to come together to take away power from PDP.”

Despite criticisms on his performance in office, Buhari said: “Anyway, as a result of this historic decision we are changing Nigeria for good.”

He said his administration has succeeded in averting the nation’s downward slide under PDP government.

He said: “I have been constrained to go public several times to remind Nigerians where this country was economically and socially and the deplorable conditions of the nation’s infrastructure, despite the unprecedented huge earnings from oil exports between I999-20l4, and how the then ruling PDP squandered nation’s resources and opportunities.

“Fortunately, we have been able to reverse this downward slide in such a short period of time, even under more challenging circumstances from 20I5 to date.

“I feel that without coming together, we would not have been able to achieve this feat. And Nigeria will be the worse for it. We remain the only hope of the country in terms of charting a politically stable and economically prosperous future for our people.

“I will, therefore, encourage us to continue leading this country effectively, now that Nigerians have entrusted us with a mandate once again to chart the course for the future of our beloved nation.

“There is no doubt that we have the popular support of Nigerians. l have seen this myself when I went around the 36 states and FCT during the electioneering campaigns. The turnout of people and messages of goodwill across the country was what no individual, party or government could organize or buy. It was purely a demonstration of confidence in our Administration and its political platform, the All Progressives’ Congress (APC), the product of the merger.

“The multitudes that trooped out to see me and hear me out was reassuring that Nigeria, despite its cultural diversities, are united on the imperative of change.

“Our duty as leaders is to ensure that we keep this nation united, build a better future for the citizens and the coming generation.”

Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State, in a separate contribution on the merger, described it as a demonstration of the fact that in life nothing is impossible.

According to him, “With clear convictions, we have demonstrated that in life nothing is impossible. Having succeeded in merging our legacy parties in June 2013, the same cynical mind set of many conservative Nigerians hardly expected the electoral defeat of PDP in 2015.

“This has not only come to pass but was replicated in 2019. Today, the cynical commentary is to dismiss the APC, its leadership and all its governance initiatives as hopeless.

“We will remain resolute and continue to drive political processes and governance to intensify delivery of public good for improved citizens’ welfare.

“At all times, our politics under APC will be about negotiating towards producing all the good outcomes that will make our country and our people great.”

  • Insecurity: Monarch calls for caution, advises against self-help

The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba AbdulRasheed Akanbi has cautioned the Yoruba against calls for war in face of the current insecurity in the Southwest, saying the lesson he had learnt during the protracted Liberian War is still fresh in his memory.

In a statement, reacting to the widely publicized letter which the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi sent to President Muhammadu Buhari, Oba Akanbi said he found himself in the thick of the war and fought on the side of Charles Taylor’s troop.

While the Oluwo acknowledged the concern which Oba Adeyemi expressed in his letter to President Buhari, he however said self-help or self-defence is not the solution to the insecurity, stressing that no zone of the nation is exempted from the ongoing menace.

Oba Akanbi stated that war is easy to invite but difficult to chase away. During war, he maintained, there is no law, except law of self-preservation which reduces social status to nothing as everybody would be struggling to remain alive.

“Parents would run for safety abandoning their children and property. Women and female children would be subjected to rape before their husbands and fathers with the fathers watching helplessly.

I know what I passed through during Liberian War fighting on the side of Charles taylor. That is more reason I would not subscribe to any call which encourages taking up arm to settle the insecurity problem which the entire country is currently facing.

“I am not undermining the intention of the Alaafin but as a war veteran, I am in the best position to offer appropriate advice.

If I keep quiet over it and something untoward happens tomorrow, I would be irresponsible traditional ruler.

I am repeating it that the cost of war is usually heavier than the cost of settlement,” he said.

The Oluwo insisted that Yoruba and Fulani had enjoyed a good relationship for over 100 years, charging President Buhari to be more pro-active in his nation-building efforts.

He affirmed that Nigeria is a blessed country which should not be allowed to go the way of the former Soviet Union.

  • Peterside hails Amaechi’s renomination

The renomination and screening of the immediate past Minister for Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, by President Muhammadu Buhari, have been described as recognition of the former governor of Rivers State’s hard work, commitment and doggedness to the success of Buhari’s administration.

The Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dakuku Peterside, stated this on Friday at the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, Rivers State, in an interactive session with reporters.

He hailed the Senate for the successful screening of Amaechi, a two-term Speaker of Rivers House of Assembly.

He said: “Rt. Hon. Amaechi proved his mettle as an administrator of men, materials and resources during his tenure as transportation minister.

His renomination by the President is a vote of confidence in him and also a mark of honour. He performed impressively in the railway, maritime and port sectors of the economy.

“Under Amaechi’s watch, Nigeria witnessed tremendous leaps in the reforms carried out in NIMASA, Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), other maritime agencies and railway sectors, which have produced outstanding results to the benefit of Nigerians.

He is a reform-minded and visionary leader who approaches his work with the highest degree of passion and commitment.

“Rt. Hon. Amaechi will always bring his wealth of experience to bear and create indelible marks in every national assignment, as he has done in all the offices he has held.”

The 2015 governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State also stated that the Senate in screening the former Rivers governor, without much ado, deepened the National Assembly’s nod for performing public servants.

  • Ondo Assembly lauds Buhari over Alasoadura’s ministerial appointment

The Ondo State House of Assembly on Friday lauded President Muhammadu Buhari for making a right choice by appointing Senator Tayo Alasoadura as a minister representing the state in the federal cabinet.

on his appointment and successful screening by the Senate.

According to Oleyelogun, Alasoadura’s appointment by President Buhari would add more value to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo and Nigeria as a whole.

The Speaker described Alasoadura’s appointment as a reward for his hard-work, commitment and loyalty to the ideal of the APC and the Nigeria project.

He also commended the Senator for his efforts at ensuring that the Petroleum Industry Governance Bill (PIGB) saw the light of the day for the good of the country.

Meanwhile, the Ondo State chapter of the APC has charged the ministerial nominees to further energise the government to improve on security, and measures aimed at bringing succour to Nigerians when they assume office.

The party noted, that, this is a sure way to dispel misgivings and negativity among the populace, and rekindled their hope and confidence.

A statement by its spokesman, Alex Kalejaiye, stressed, that, it was not by accident that President Buhari selected some of the most experienced and best brains from among the lots available in the country.

The APC said: “The onus lies on those selected to justify the huge confidence reposed in them by conceiving and implementing workable policies, particularly in areas that are very key to the overall security and wellbeing of Nigerians.”
