  • MultiChoice says court ruling against market economy

PAY TV operator, MultiChoice Nigeria, has described the court ruling restraining it from implementing its new subscription rates as an affront to free market economy.

In a statement yesterday, it said it received, on Thursday, an interim court order dated August 20 from the Federal High Court regarding the price adjustment that it implemented on August 1, 2018.

“We believe that the order is an affront to the free market economy and we have now filed a Notice of Appeal and an application for stay of execution, pending the hearing of the Appeal.  The CPC has been accordingly served with the requisite processes. In the light of the application for a stay of execution, the status quo therefore prevails,” the statement said.

The Pay TV company said it will always operate within the ambit of the law and will cooperate with the authorities to ensure the best outcome for its customers, as it remains committed to providing the best quality of entertainment and premium content at the best possible prices.

  • Multichoice to show 1,140 football league matches live

Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, UEFA Champions League and other top flight football leagues is here again after the FIFA World Cup break.

The English league will kick off on August 11, and others will follow suit.

The General Manager Sales and Marketing, MultiChoice Nigeria,  Martin Mabutho, however provides answers to the questions on the minds of Nigerian football fans who are looking forward for the games in this interview.                                                                                                                                                       Excerpts.

The new football season is here again, what should Nigerian fans expect from Multichoice?

We are happy when we put smiles on our customers’ faces by bringing the best of World sports through our SuperSport channels. This year is no different as we present; The Premier League (PL), The UEFA Champions League (UCL), La Liga, Serie A, Super Cup and Super Spanish Cup.

And of course we are proud and excited to be the sole broadcaster of the new UEFA Nations League. Think of the UEFA Champions League for Nations! The best European sides we saw at the World Cup are in it. This is going to be HOT!

Why doesn’t SuperSport have rights to the Community Shield and FA Cup this season?

The elephant in the room…we were outbid for the Community Shield and FA Cup. Another provider offered a lot more than we did, and they got it. I am not sure why they did not show it though.

However, we were able to bag the rights for Serie A. It’s the league that has the best footballer in the world; CR7. In hindsight, a whole season of Serie A against a once off game between two teams from the Premier League. Come to think of it, even the FA Cup is a subset of the same Premier League that we have all 380 games live off. I’d say it worked out ok in the end.

Ronaldo’s move to Juventus was a pleasant coincidence, as we trust CR7 to make his mark on Italian football. It’s football drama that Serie A is sure to deliver.

We all missed Italy at the World Cup. I am sure the lead up to Qatar 2022 will be lit with Serie A.

What should we look forward to as the new football season kicks off this week? A lot!!! In High Definition

    –       All 380 Premier League games

    –       All 380 La Liga games

    –       All Serie A games

    –       All UEFA Champions League games…need I say MORE?

Our priority is to deliver the best sporting content and reaffirm our commitment to delivering world class sporting action. To usher in the new football season this year, we will deliver an unmatched viewing experience as the Premier League kick offs on Friday, 10 August 2018 whilst the La Liga season will start on Saturday, 18 August 2018 followed by Serie A on Sunday, 19 August 2018. Customers can look forward to the best expert analysis from football legends, live performances, celebrity experiences, music and more.

Last year was epic as you facilitated the parade of the English Premiership cup in Nigeria.  Are customers expecting the same treat?

Yes it was indeed a great year for football, and the PL trophy tour was the proverbial icing on the cake.  All this we did with our customers in mind. We thought that with the English Premier League being the most anticipated league in the world, it was only fitting for the most ardent fans – our customers to experience results of their passion in a very palpable way by way of photo Ops with the trophy.

However, I cannot confirm at the moment if the trophy will make a return this year, but let’s watch this space for perhaps more thrilling news in the next few months.

What football action can GOtv subscribers look forward to?

This is where again, we have amped up the value. GOtv now offers more Premier League games than any other DTT service provider in Africa. That’s an extra game of PL, all La Liga, all Serie A, and we brought down the cost of the lead bouquet from N3,800 to N3,200. Also GOtv Plus subscribers will have access to LIVE Matches. GOtv Value and Lite subscribers are not left out as they can enjoy matches on FTA channels. They will be spoilt for choice with big league titles such as The Premier League (PL), The UEFA Champions League (UCL), La Liga, Spanish Super Cup and Serie A.

How many matches will be available to DStv and GOtv subscribers this season?

SuperSport will showcase all 1,140 matches of the new football season: 380 Premier League matches, 380 Serie A matches and 380 La Liga games with most of the matches from each league broadcast LIVE and in HD on SuperSport.

Is there a discount on Explora and other devices?

You know us, we always run promos during this period, and as is the norm, we welcome the new football season with open arms by dishing out some great offers. The DStv HD decoder, which includes a dish kit plus one-month subscription on Compact package now goes for N11,900 from the normal N18,500. In addition, the GOtv decoder, which comes with the antenna and one-month on GOtv MAX is available for N6,900 rather than the normal rate of N7,900.

What is your take on the hike in pricing of Pay Tv services in Nigeria

I can’t respond to what others say, it’s not our culture to do so. I can only speak on behalf of and about DStv and GOtv. Having said that, we have brought down a lot of content including football and general entertainment, increasing the value for money to our customers, whilst also keeping an eye on our operational costs.

Our Compact bouquet at N6,800, gives all the football matches…all the most revered leagues, even more than what is shown on TV abroad.

We put our customers at the center of everything we do which includes offering the best content at unbeatable prices.

    What’s the deal with Iwobi?

Alex, he is the latest addition to our family. We have been working on an awesome campaign that we will roll out soon. He is a gifted player and embodies the brand values of our Compact bouquet.

You are a Man United supporter, we know…How market?

Well we kick off on Friday with Leicester. We have made a few changes to the squad, so yeah let’s see how it goes. Pre-season outing was a disaster but that’s not always a reflection of what happens through the season.

  • Cost of Pay TV around the world

Last week’s announcement of price adjustments by pay TV operator, MultiChoice, has unsurprisingly provoked disaffection among its subscribers. The company, in a text message sent to its customers, announced that with effect from 1 August, subscription rates for the five bouquets on its DStv platform will go up. Its highest bouquet, DStv Premium, will rise from N14, 700 to N15, 800. Compact Plus will go from N9, 900 to N10, 650, while Compact, which currently costs N6, 500, rises to N6, 800. Its two lowest packages, Family and Access, which currently cost N3, 800 and N1, 900, will henceforth cost N4, 000 and N2, 000 respectively.

The company, however, slashed the price of the highest package on its GOtv platform, GOtv MAX, from N3, 800 to N3, 200. This, however, has gone almost unnoticed, following the disaffection trailing the price adjustments on DStv bouquets, particularly the three highest ones.

As with every price increase, subscribers have accused the company of deliberately hiking prices because it enjoys a monopoly. Some particularly angry ones claimed that Nigerians are specifically made targets of price increases more than the company’s subscribers in other countries. In addition, they claimed that pay TV services in Nigeria are the most expensive in the world.

Investigations, however, show that this claim is anything but true. MultiChoice prices were increased continent-wide. When the new price regime takes effect, DStv Premium subscribers in South Africa, for example, will pay R809 (N21, 728.47, while Compact Plus subscribers will pay R509, the equivalent of N13, 670. For Compact, customers in South Africa will pay R385 (N10, 340.49), with prices for the Family and Access bouquets rising to R249 (N6, 687.75) and R99 (N2, 656.98) respectively.

DStv Premium subscribers in Ghana will pay GHµ  365 (N27, 360.75), while those on Compact Plus will pay GHµ  245, the equivalent of N18, 365.44. The Compact bouquet in the West African country will attract GHµ  149, the equivalent of N11, 169.18. Subscribers on the Family bouquet will pay GHµ  85 (N6, 961.60).

Contrary to the prevalent view, Pay TV subscribers in countries outside of Africa do no exactly pay cheaper rates. The fattest bouquet (Premier) on US pay TV provider, Direct TV’s platform costs $110 or N38, 710 monthly. Next to it is the Ultimate package, which costs $60 (N21, 660). On the providers third tier is the Xtra package, which attracts $55 (N19, 855). Direct TV’s three other packages, Choice, Entertainment and Select attract $45 (N16, 245), $40 (N14, 440) and $35 (N12, 635).

United Kingdom’s premier pay TV operator, Sky TV, charges £79.95 (N38, 167.33) for its topmost package and £47.50 (N22, 572.97) for the one next to it. Below that is the package that costs   £40 (N19, 008.82). Prices for Sky TV’s three lowest packages are £30 (N14, 256.61), £25 (N11, 731.54) and £20 (N9, 504.41) respectively. In the Central American country of Mexico, where Sky TV also operates, it respectively charges MXN 1039 (N19, 798.52) and MXN 829 (N15, 796. 52) for its two biggest packages. The two lower ones cost MXN 649 (N12, 366.93) and MXN 569 (N10, 842.50).

Rates charged by Australian operator, Foxtel, are in the same range. The pay TV service provider charges subscribers on its premium package 75 Australian dollars or AUD (N20, 081.53). The next to it costs AUD 55 (N14, 726. 45). The two other packages on its platform attract AUD 46 (N12, 316. 67) and AUD 26 (N6, 961.60) respectively.

Around the world, pay TV subscription rates usually provoke impassioned debates, especially with the annual price adjustments made pay TV operators. These, investigations revealed, are largely imposed by rising programming costs, which cut into operators’ margins. The jump in fees paid by pay TV operators to carry TV networks are chiefly occasioned by the rising costs of the TV networks, particularly sports for which they have to continuously pay more to sports leagues (like the English Premier League, LaLiga, Bundesliga, Serie A and NBA) for must-have programming.

The networks are, therefore, compelled to pass on the costs to pay TV companies which, in turn, pass a portion of it to their subscribers.

According to consumerreports.org, most Pay TV operators in the US announced price hikes in 2018, with some introducing hidden fees.

American firm, S&P Global Market Intelligence, estimates that network fees being paid by Pay TV operators are more than double what they were a decade ago.

The company also reckons that pay TV consumer bills in the US rose by 53% since 2007 to $100.98 in 2017.

Early this year, US Pay TV provider Cox Communications, informed its customers of plans to institute across-the-board price increases, with rates for video packages increasing by $1 to $5 a month. The announcement was quickly followed by similar ones made by two other providers, Comcast and Dish Network.

Explaining the price increase Todd Smith, Cox representative, was quoted by fiercecable.com as saying: “The rising cost of programming content continues to be the main reason why our video prices increase.”

  • Multichoice offers free course in filmmaking

Multichoice is out with a laudable initiative, designed to give young filmmakers in Nigeria world class training, absolutely free-of-charge.

Called Multichoice Talent Factory, the programme is expected to increase the numbers of trained filmmakers working in Nollywood, and impact on job creation through creative entrepreneurs who will in turn employ others.

Launched on May 30, 2018, entry had since been opened to applicants in West Africa, with Nigeria as the center. They exercise is expected to produce 20 successful applicants from West Africa for the first year of the programme billed to commence in October.

The initiative is being replicated in East and Southern Africa, making a total of 20, the number of young filmmakers to be trained in the first season.

Multichoice is partnering the Pan Atlantic University for this project in the area of curriculum development.

The Pan-African initiative for film and television industry, according to Multichoice, is aimed at igniting and growing Africa’s creative industries into vibrant, economic centers.

“The African development story has long been defined by investment in the vast mineral wealth on the continent, leaving our creative industries to fend for themselves on the fringes of economic development for far too long. As a result, the film and television industries have not developed at the same rate as other industries on the continent, and not for a lack of talent, passion or imagination,” says John Ugbe, Managing Director, MultiChoice Nigeria. “We are abundantly blessed in these areas, however, the space given for this expression has at best been limited and at worst, been relegated to the fringes of the mainstream economy, leaving in its wake, unfulfilled dreams, unexplored talent and unwritten stories. As an African business, MultiChoice, together with our valued partners and stakeholders across the continent, have collaborated to make a positive socio-economic impact in the communities in which we live and work through the MultiChoice Talent Factory initiative.”

Ugbe further stated that the MTF initiative will deliver three touchpoints that launch throughout the year – the MTF academies, Masterclasses and the MTF Portal. The first to launch is the MTF Academy, a 12-month educational programme aimed at furnishing 60 deserving, young, talented people who want to work and innovate in film and television production.

He said the programme will take place at three regional MTF Academies based in Nigeria for West Africa, Kenya for East Africa and Zambia for Southern African countries and will be overseen by acclaimed local film and TV industry experts. “In West Africa, Mr. Femi Odugbemi, has been appointed as the Academy Director for the hub,” he revealed.
