Police arrest four for ‘kidnapping’ senator’s mum

The police in Bayelsa State have arrested four suspects in connection with the abduction of Madam Fiorentina, the 90-year-old mother of Senator Emmanuel  Paulker.

It was learnt that some of the suspects  confessed to the crime and were helping security agencies to rescue the woman.

Government yesterday hailed the security agencies, especially the police, for their  response to the incident.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Hilary Opara, confirmed the arrest and assured that the nonagenarian would soon be released.

The victim was on Wednesday morning kidnapped by suspected gunmen at her home in Opolo-Epie, Yenagoa, for the second time in four years.

The State Security Adviser, Lt.-Col. Benard Kenebai (retd), in a statement in Yenagoa confirmed that the urgent response of the security agencies led to the arrest of the four suspects.

Kenebai on behalf of the government assured security agencies of support in their efforts to free the woman and arrest other suspects.

“One of the prime suspects was arrested within minutes of the distress call and three others were arrested less than six hours later. They have made useful statements to the police and efforts are on to ensure the prompt and successful release of the victim,” he said.

Kenebai assured the indigenes that the investments made by the government on security assets and the commitment of the security agencies would help to stop crimes.

He said such arrangement would help to apprehend and prosecute suspected criminals who insist on committing offences despite the tight security network.

“The Bayelsa State government is also appealing to all peace-loving people to have confidence in the state’s security systems and continue to co-operate and collaborate with security agencies in the fight against crime and criminality.

“Government restates its commitment to ensuring that no stone is left unturned in the pursuit of criminals in the state through its continued support to the security agencies in bringing perpetrators of the crime to book.

“Criminal elements are by this statement warned to stay away from Bayelsa State, because they will be apprehended for any act,” Kenebai said.

Suspected gunmen kidnap 90-year-old senator’s mum

Suspected gunmen yesterday abducted Madam Florentina, the 90-year-old mother of Senator Emmanuel Paulker, from her home in Opolo-Epie, Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital.

Residents were angry that the gunmen kidnapped the woman despite her age.

They were also annoyed because the woman was kidnapped for the second time in four years.

In February 23, 2010, the old woman was abducted by armed youths, who demanded N100million ransom.

She was rescued in March 2010 by security operatives, who reportedly shot one of the kidnappers on Immiringi Road in a battle.

It was learnt that the kidnappers returned about 3am on Wednesday and executed their evil plot. A source said they were five and  armed with AK47 and other rifles.

He added: “The kidnappers came through the main road. They drove a vehicle into the community and shot into the air to create panic among the people, who were fast asleep.

“They broke into the old woman’s room and took her away to an unknown place. Some residents thought the abductors were armed robbers.”

Another source decried the kidnap of Madam Florentina.

Police Commissioner Hilary Opara confirmed the incident. He said one of the suspects had been arrested.

Tears as Moyo Lawal buries mum

BURGEONING actress Moyo Lawal has been in low spirits ever since news broke about the death of her mother who passed away last Sunday. Moyo was inconsolable on Tuesday, May 14 when the remains of her late mother who died on May 12 at the age of 52 was interred at the Vaults and Gardens Private Cemetery, Ikoyi, Lagos.

Until her death, Mrs Lawal was a nurse at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH). She is survived by her husband, Tajudeen Lawal, and three children; Moyo (the first born), Mayowa and Molade.

“For everyone or rather most people, their mum is their best friend but that wasn’t the case with my mother; she was my backbone. She taught me to love and give without expecting anything back.

“My unsung heroine who sacrificed everything for my family and I has passed away. I fought my worst fights with her and also laughed the hardest with her. She spoilt me beyond reason and I have actually learnt to be independent.” Moyo said in a heavy laden voice.

It could be recalled that Moyo was one of the housemates of The Next Movie Star in 2006 and her early exit from the House came at a time when no one expected her to leave considering her pedigree. But she sure did add some spark and shine while her time lasted in the House.

After the show, the Badagry indigene and Creative Arts graduate of the University of Lagos picked up the pieces of her early ouster and has gone on to feature in scores of high profile TV soaps and movies such as Shallow Waters, Binta and Friends, Eldorado, D8, Flat Mates, Dancehood and most recently Tinsel.

  • Expectant mum shot by ‘robbers’ in Rivers

A twenty eight-year–old expectant mother was shot yesterday by suspected robbers in Rivers State.

Florence Onu was shot in the head on Ada-George Road, Rumueme, in Obio/Akpor Local Government, when she struggled with the robbers to recover her bag.

Her younger sister, Ebere Amadi, who was at the scene, said the victim had N50,000 inside the bag, which was the offering collected in church.

She said: “It happened around 8pm when we were returning from church. Suddenly, we saw this red Audi coming close to us as if the driver wanted to ask us for directions. The next thing we saw was one of them grabbing my sister’s bag.

“As they were struggling, one of the men who sat in the back seat brought out a gun and shot my sister; they took the bag and zoomed off. Before we could rush her to the hospital she died.

“The money inside the bag does not belong to her. It was the N50,000 offering collected during the evening service.

“The pastor asked her to take it home, because her husband, who was responsible for keeping the church money, was not in church.”

    •Pupil invests N100 and gets N190,000

FIFTEENyear-old Dumebi Alim invested N100 to participate in an educational quiz game show and won N190,000 prize money. She said with the win in the competition called My Education Quiz Play she has proven to her mum that she is not just a local champion.

The SS2 pupil of Air Force Secondary School, Ikeja, told The Nation in an interview that her mother had always challenged her to excel outside her school, where she has been a dominant force academically since primary level.

“I used to come first from primary school and my mum would say, ‘you are a local champion, go out and do something’, and I was able to go somewhere outside my school and excel so she was proud of me,” she said.

My Education Quiz Play, like the Who wants to be a millionaire show accumulates money for contestants with each correct answer they give to the general knowledge and specific subject questions asked. However, the education game is different in that more than one contestant participates but the person with the least amount of money is eliminated after each round until there is only one constestant standing.

Dumebi was the last pupil in her group of six when she competed with five other secondary pupils in four stages last month.

She entered for the show after watching an episode on MITV. She said given the prize money she won the N100 SMS she sent to enter was worth the investment.

The teenager, who hopes to study Medicine at the University of Ibadan (UI) after her secondary education, also said the experience taught her to be prepared at all times. She advised other pupils to spend more time learning.

“It helped me to see that it really pays to read and be ready. I got the text inviting to participate a day before the competition. I tried to read but my dad said whatever I read that night would not be useful but what I already know. When most people watch TV it is for entertainment. Programmes like this help to develop you. Even if you are not called to participate you still gain a lot,” she said.

Speaking on behalf of Foundation for Effective Leadership and Development (FELD), which sponsors the game, CEO of BigSam Media, Mr Samuel Olatunji said the foundation came up with the initiative that gives chance to secondary school pupils to win up to N1million and tertiary students, N2million, to give students, especially the indigent, opportunity to win money for their education.

He said: “The Chairman of FELD, Hon Paul Adingwupu is sponsoring this programme to help students with their education. He has put down the prize money students can win. We hope to air the programme on more stations this quarter,” he said.

So far, an undergraduate of the University of Lagos, Anne Ejiegbu is the highest prize winner in the competition, winning N210,000 last quarter. Other winners include: Chidinma Ezugu (N155, 000), Precious Onowudijo (N120, 000), Adewole Toluwani (N55, 000), Adidu Obi (N55, 000) Iko Abasi Melody (N10, 000) and Okoji Donald (N35, 000).

  • My agony, by mum of lynched student

To waylay them and beat them with planks until they died like chicken is the most savage thing one can witness in Nigeria of 2012” the aggrieved mother of one of the four University of Port Harcourt students killed in Aluu Community, last Friday laments in a petition to the Senate.

Mrs. Chinwe Biringa, mother of Chiadika Biringa. He ordered in the petition dated October 9, 2012, prayed the Senate to ensure that those who killed her son did not escape the law.

The petition, addressed to Senate President, David Mark, is entitled, “Gruesome murder of my son at Aluu, University of Port Harcourt host community.”

She said her family wanted only two things namely: To clear the name of Chiadika (of stealing); and justice (for his murder)

The petition read: “My name is Mrs. Chinwe BIRINGA. I am the mother of Mr. Chiadika BIRINGA, a second year student of Theatre Arts at the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT).

“My husband is a senior officer at the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC.

“My son turned 20 years this week and we gave him pocket money to celebrate it with his friends.

“On Friday morning, we were called by my second son, also a UNIPORT student that all was not well and he was hearing bad rumours that villagers at ALUU, the host community of UNIPORT had murdered four students.

“I immediately rushed to the scene only to see my son’s dead body being taken away naked to a mortuary in UNIPORT Teaching Hospital.

“I could not believe my eyes and I collapsed.

“What did my son do? What did the other three young men who died with him do?

“First, we heard that the four students were alleged to have stolen a Blackberry phone and a laptop computer.

“This could not be further from the truth. My son had a Blackberry phone and in fact a laptop computer since he was in primary school.

“No way could my son steal such a common thing as a cell phone which every village woman now owns.

“We have been subjected to several gory videos and pictures on the internet.

“This shows that someone filmed the whole barbarism from beginning to the end.

“My son and his friends were savagely beaten and burnt to death while villagers at Aluu watched.

“All this has been caught on film!

“The video shows that all this was filmed in broad day light which suggests that they were killed after 7.30 am.

“Further investigation has revealed that they left their friend’s house at ALUU at about 7 am to go and prepare for lectures.

“To waylay them and beat them with planks until they died like chicken is the most savage thing one can witness in Nigeria of 2012.

“First they were stripped naked, marched around like frogs and then beaten to death. What savagery and bestiality.

My husband and I want only two things, namely: a) To clear the name of Chiadika, b) justice.

“Your Excellency, every responsible parent knows what I, my husband, and the entire family are passing through over this beastly murder.

“We do not want this thing to be swept under the rug like most Nigerian investigations.

“We seek the help and intervention of the Senate to ensure that justice is done.

“Justice is the only thing that can assuage the pains and emotional traumas consuming us and clear the name of our son so that he can rest in peace.

“Again, and for emphasis, the film shows everything in clear view and all the perpetrators must answer for their crimes.

“We want justice. Those who murdered my son must face the wrath of the law.”

“Heartbroken mother, Mrs. Chinwe, BIRINGA BI.”
