  • Mum, three children charged with dad’s death

Almost three years after the death of Superintendent of Police (SP) Joseph Idehen, his ex-wife Taiwo and three of their children have been charged with murder.

In a charge filed at a Lagos High Court, the defendants were accused of conspiracy, murder, forgery of a death certificate, falsification of documents and stealing.

The accused, Taiwo, Samuel, Michael and Ruth Idehen are standing trial before Justice Adedayo Akintoye.

Last April, Justice Akintoye issued a warrant for their arrest and directed that they be  arraigned on May 8, but they were not.

The police, in the charge marked LD/6510c/2017, accused the defendants of conspiring to commit the offence on July 4, 2016, at thelate Idehen’s home at 5, Odetola Street, off Merit Road, Alagbado, Lagos.

The police said Taiwo was his third wife, adding that they divorced over 29 years ago.

Idehen, 64, died after eating food allegedly served him by one of his daughters, about a year after he retired. He had 11 children.

The defendants were accused of forging a death certificate from Ota General Hospital, Ogun State, with which they conveyed his body to Aragba in Delta State.

It was alleged that efforts to conduct an autopsy proved abortive, as four of his 11 children and their mother buried him in an unknown place.

The court heard that one of the defendants, Michael, withdrew N286, 000 from the late Idehen’s First Bank account.

The defendants were alleged to have fraudulently withdrawn N2.1 million from his Zenith Bank account.

The offence, according to prosecuting counsel Morufu Animashaun, contravened sections 233, 365 (3)(d), 366 and 287 (5) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The defendants pleaded not guilty.

Animashaun prayed the court to remand them in prison pending their trial.

“The defendants’ arraignment was predicated on a petition dated August 2016, written to the police by the Chambers of Milestone Partners, wherein the role played by each of the defendants leading to the death of the retired police officer was stated,” Animashaun said.

He said upon receiving the petition, the defendants were invited for interrogation and their statements taken.

But defence counsel Mr. Kennedy Osunwa argued for his clients’ bail, saying the applications “have been filed and served on the prosecution.”

Justice Akintoye remanded the defendants in prison and fixed hearing in their applications for Friday.

  • Mum threatens to sue LASPOTECH over son’s assault

Mother of a student of Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH) allegedly assaulted by the school’s security men on July 11 for wearing earrings has threatened to go to court.

Ms Folake Sokoya said she was injured when she went to enquire why her son, Boluwatife Olowu, was beaten up.

She described as false LASPOTECH’s claim that she attacked its security men.

In a statement, she said she had video and photographs to prove her case.

Boluwatife is a National Diploma II student in the Hospitality Management Technology Department.

The statement reads: “Reading through the purported press release, I find it misleading and false as the narrative of the Public Relations officer (PRO) does not depict the true account of what happened that day.

“It may interest the general public to know that there are pictorial and video evidences on the true account of what transpired between both parties that fateful day.

“The pictures of how I was battered with my son are enough evidence that their publication is false and misleading. My son and I were not in an accident but were battered mercilessly by LASPOTECH guards. I have resorted to seeking legal redress in quest for justice and my lawyer has been consulted and briefed on the matter.”

In a petition, Sokoya said she lost some valuables to the attack.

She said her son’s $300; stud earring, N70,000 earrings, a gold chain and pendant worth $800, a swatch wristwatch ($250) were lost. She claimed that her two Samsung J3 prime phones worth N40,000 each got damaged.

The school denied the allegations in an earlier statement by its Deputy Registrar (Information and Public Relations) Olanrewaju Kuye.

It described Ms Sokoya as the aggressor, alleging that she attacked its security men when she came to the school over the seizure of her son’s earrings.

  • Dickson: mum was my rock and biggest supporter

Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson yesterday described his late mother, Mrs. Goldcoast Dickson as his rock, elder sister, friend, biggest supporter, and an integral part of his life.

He said the life of her mother, who he fondly called Mama Gogo, impacted positively in him and on those who met her.

Dickson spoke when the state’s federal lawmakers, condoled with him in Government House, Yenagoa.

A statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Francis Ottah Agbo quoted Dickson, as saying his mother’s love, devotion and warmth towards him and his siblings could never be quantified.

Dickson lamented the passage of his mother, saying the vacuum created by her departure would be difficult to fill, as she always prayed for him and for his administration to succeed.

He said: “My mum was my rock. She was not just my mother; she was my elder sister; she had me very early; she was my friend and my biggest supporter in any thing I wanted to do.

“And she was always praying and encouraging me. Today, for the first time since her death, as we finished the morning devotion, I didn’t have my mother to hug me because every morning after devotion, she would hug me!

“After every morning devotion, she would bless me and pronounce strength and God’s guidance and she did that till the very end. Even on her hospital bed, she was praying and blessing all her children so this is one vacuum that will be very difficult to fill.”

The governor, who said the Dickson family was going through a trying period, noted that Mrs. Dickson would be greatly missed.

He appreciatied all who identified with the family in its moment of grief.

  • Dad, mum, son held for ‘burglary, theft’

The police have arrested a couple, Uroye and Margaret Teddy, their teenage son, Tega, and his lover, Karima Edom, for alleged burglary and theft.

The suspects were said to have broken into 8, Ade Onitiri, Harmony Estate in Langbasa Lagos home of Mrs. Folasade Odunuga.

According to the police, Mrs. Odunuga was on a three-month vacation, which started on May 27 when the incident occurred.

It was gathered that the suspects looted her car and other household items after entering her house from the ceiling.

Edom, who is said to be victim’s neighbour, allegedly informed Tega that Mrs Odunuga was away from home, laying grounds for the burglary.

Police alleged that the lovers also cooked, wined and dined in the house.

It was gathered that Tega with the aid of his parents, started looting the woman’s home and continued for weeks before Mrs. Odunuga’s maid, Eniola Abisola, came and discovered that many items were missing.

She was said to have alerted the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Adaobi Okafor, a Superintendent (SP), who mobilised her men to search the neighbourhood for suspects on the division’s watch list.

“When the detectives checked on Tega, they saw Mrs Odunuga’s Chevrolette Aveo saloon car marked AKD512AP, parked in front of his parent’s house at New Osho layout, Langbasa. He was promptly arrested.

“During interrogation, he revealed that he entered the victim’s house through the ceiling and gradually, he began to pack the household items to his father’s house.

“He narrated that his mother helped him to hide the stolen items in an uncompleted building while his girlfriend Karima, hid some in her house.

“Tega further revealed that his father went with him to the victim’s house to tow the aforementioned car. It was seen that Mrs Margaret Teddy had put the stolen properties for sale,” said spokesman for the command, Chike Oti, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP).

Oti said the police recovered the vehicle, a flat screen television, home theatre sound system, electric generator, a standing fan, five leather bags, an iPad, baby shoes and other personal items of the victim.

He said: “The Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, charges residents to take their personal security seriously. They should ensure that their houses are entrusted in the hands of trusted relations, friends or aides whenever they travel.

“He admonished that people should go back to our old ways of visiting their neighbours to check on them. He added that if that was the case in this instance, Teddy and his girlfriend Karima would not have had the effrontery to cook, eat and wine in Folashade Odunuga’s house during her long absence from home.”

  • Toxic fumes emission: Mum spends N300,000 on daughter’s treatment

A trader in Oto Community in Ijora Olopa, Lagos, has claimed that she spent over N300,000 on her nine-month-old daughter, who is  undergoing treatment for intestine infection after inhaling toxic fumes from an asphalt firm

Mrs Fausat Akande told The Nation that Faidat suffered  infection after inhaling fumes emitted from  Righteous Construction Company Nigeria Limited, which is in front of her 6A Bello Lane home.

The company was sealed off on Wednesday by officials of the Ministries of the Environment and Health following a visit to the residents.

Faidat is one of the many complainants in the community, who  developed several health issues after inhaling the toxic fumes.  They have been diagnosed with  cough, catarrh, eye problem and asthma.

Many of the residents  told The Nation: “Help us o, this company wants to kill all of us before our time; we must not get blind; we are tired of taking our children and ourselves to the hospital almost every day. They have chased some of us away from our houses; everywhere is dusty; our water is dirty all because of this company.”

The Nation gathered that the problem started in 2016, following the damage of some of the firm’s machines.

Mrs Akande told The Nation that Faidat’s sickness began last February with vomiting and stooling, adding that she took her to the hospital and it stopped.

She said: “The sickness began again last month; she began to have difficulty in breathing, I took her to Massey Hospital and we were there for three days till they rushed us in an ambulance to Lagos Island General Hospital. Her stomach was swollen; she could not defecate and urinate; we did a series of test before it was later discovered that the area we live emits dust. The doctors said it is the dust  stored in her chest that affected her intestine; this was why they had to operate her. I spent a lot of money and spent about 15 days at the general hospital. I have spent all the money I have on treating my daughter; there is nothing in my shop again; all that I have in my shop is what I have sold to take care of this girl.

“The owner of this company should take his company from here; such company should be in the bush and not in a residential area.  I took my baby to the company and they promised that there will be solution but still they have done nothing. This dust affects many people in this community, especially children.”

Inspector Bako Husseini, who lives in the Police Barracks opposite the company, said he had also been diagnosed with infection as a result of the fumes from the company, adding that he is currently on anti-biotics.

His four-year-old daughter, Goodness, also has skin infection and she is also receiving treatment.

He said it all began about three years ago, noting that the community is tired of taking drugs and going to the hospital every now and then.

“When they start the production, we hardly breathe in our homes. The dust will cover the whole house, our water, bed, food, clothes and our nostrils will be blocked. We breathe the particles into our nostrils. Our children have skin rashes all the time. We go to the hospital from time to time over difficult breathing, skin infection and we keep spending money every now and then. Almost everybody in this community is coughing; there is no house that is not suffering one sickness or the other and everybody’s house is dusty.

“We have told the owner of the company more than three times that the fumes is affecting us and he told us that something spoilt in the machine and that is what is causing the fumes and that they will do something about it, Otto community has protested more than 10 times, but up till now, nothing has been done. If nothing is done about it, many of us will start dying in this community,” he said.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Emmanuel Abel said many people have left the community because of the problem. “My four years old daughter, Deborah coughs every day for over a year up till now and I have spent a lot of money on her. My 10 years old son also sneezes continuously every time the company is producing. This company is just killing us; once they start the production, which is usually at night, we cannot sleep; the whole house is dusty, we have to cover our nose; our cars parked outside are always dusty, even though we wash them before going to bed at night.

“All we want is that this company should relocate so that we can stop spending our money on drugs and hospital bill all the time. They should find alternative means to do their business and not affect the whole community,” Abel said.

Mrs Labara Maiva, whose son, Innocent suffers eye problem, said she has taken Innocent to the hospital for treatment over 20 times in the past one and a half years.

According to her, Innocent had no problem with his eyes until the company fumes began few years ago in the area.

She said: “Innocent uses several drugs and eyes drop; his eyes are itchy and red, and I am already tired of him using the various eyes drop more than four times every day. “We cannot spread our clothes outside once the production starts; the fumes stick to our body and it itches; everywhere gets cloudy as if it wants to rain, we need government to come to our aid.”

Alhaja Usamat Lawal, 80,  of 5, Bello Street, who coughed severally while speaking with our reporter, pleaded with government to come to their aid.

She said she got her cough from the fumes, adding that eyes were also  affected.

Alhaja Lawal said: “I have been in this community for years and I have been healthy not until about last year when these fumes from the company started affecting the community. Now I cannot see long distance. I have gone to the company to tell them to have mercy on me but nothing has been done; I was told to get glasses in the hospital but I don’t have money for glasses; I am currently on various eyes drop and the expenses are already too much. The cough in the past five weeks has been terrible, it affects my chest and I sometimes lose my breath due to the cough. I beg this company to leave this community and not allow me lose my life because of them.”
