  • Shun aggression, Muslims told

    Shun aggression, Muslims told

An islamic group, Nasril-Lahi-L-Fathi Society of Nigeria (NASFAT), has enjoined Muslims to live peacefully with others irrespective of their religious differences.

Speaking at the induction of the new executive and Council of Elders for its Ikotun, Lagos Branch, the second Vice President of NASFAT Worldwide, Alhaji Wasiu Bolaji, said such attitude would convince others that Islam “is truly a religion of peace.”

Bolaji said: “It’s unfortunate that the act of terrorism around the world today is being linked to Muslims. Yet, those who know the truth have decided to conceal the fact about the real causes of terrorism and human cruelty that we are all witnessing today.  Islam is a religion of peace anytime; you don’t need to be confused otherwise. You should go and study your holy book thoroughly in case of any doubt; Islam was never evangelised with the swords. All the wars fought by Prophet Muhammad were defensive wars against the very aggressive infidels. And those were commonsensical wars anyway.”

  • ‘Muslims did not deride science’

President Lekki Muslim Ummah, Mr Yunus Adeniyi, has said there was no time science education was seen by the early Muslims as contrary to their faith but rather considered a religious duty to be studied and understood.

He spoke at a graduation and fund raiser of the Institute of Islamic and Arabic Studies, Lekki, Lagos.

The institution produced 31 graduands this year.

Adeniyi  said: “A Muslim must not get tired of seeking knowledge until he reaches heaven. The injunction in the Holy Quran and the prophetic traditions pushed the early Muslims on a quest for knowledge, including in science.”

He said the first Quaranic verses revealed to man shows that humans are repeatedly instructed to use their intellect in order to comprehend the divine will.

“Quran 96 vs 1-4 which is the first verse of the Quran that was revealed says read in the name of your lord who has created all that exist. These first verses refer to the human ability to write, record knowledge and speak. It is a gift from God because it allows human to excel beyond other creatures.”

Assuring that the graduating students have acquired Quranic knowledge on various degrees, Adeniyi said there are others who are just learning Quran for the first time, those who are learning to interpret, those who are learning to speak and those learning the way to worship.

He said people should attend Islamic institutes so that they can understand what they are reading because according to him, many people don’t understand what they read, and as such they misread, misinterpret and misbehave.

“That is the type of terror we find in the world, Islam is a religion of peace. When you understand what you are reading you, fear God and the fear of God brings you to good conduct.

“When you fear God you will not misbehave. Many of the things happening in our society today are because people who don’t really fear God,” Adeniyi said.

He advised the Federal Government to contain insecurity through education, adding that if people are educated, the dreaded Islamic sect Boko Haram will not have the kind of followership it has today.

“It is not easy in the Southwest or Southeast to convince people to go and fight without a course, so I think people in the North need to be educated more. Here, we have over 100 students that should pay 2,000 a month but they can’t afford it, yet we still train them. They are mainly children of Northerners who are security guards,” Adeniyi added.

  • Seven killed in Taraba ethno-religious crisis

    •Police: casualty figure unknown

Over seven people were yesterday killed in a resurgence of ethno-religious violence in Wukari Local Government Area of Taraba State.

The violence started around 5am and lasted for several hours.

Many were injured. Some of the injured were taken to hospitals in the neighbouring Benue State by members of the Red Cross and security agents.

It was learnt that policemen chased some people in a red Toyota car to a house near the Wukari Central Mosque.

Sources said occupants of the house engaged the police in a gun battle and three persons were killed.

They said gunmen set ablaze the brewery behind the palace of the Wukari Jukun, the Aku Uka, Dr. Shekarau Angyu, resulting in a fight between Christian Jukuns and Hausa-Fulani Muslims.

A source said: “After setting the brewery ablaze, the gunmen started shooting sporadically, leading to the death of many people.”

President of the Youths of Vision, Wukari, Tsa-Asen Luka Agbu said: “At about 5am, gunmen stormed the town and burnt down the brewery behind the palace of the Aku-Uka. They also started shooting all over the town, a situation that sparked off the crisis.”

The situation was brought under control by security agents.

Agbu said: “This is sad. I believe some top politicians have a hand in this.”

He alleged that some people were benefiting from an increased security vote in the state. Agnes Bako, a student of the Federal University, Wukari, said the institution could not operate because of incessant crisis.

The member representing Wukari II in the House of Assembly, Daniel Ishaya Gani, said there were not enough  security men to contain the insurgents.

On the casualty figure, he said: “I heard that the military shot many stubborn boys who refused to leave the crisis area.”

State Red Cross Secretary Lucky Naboki Agema said he did not know the casualty figure or who ignited the crisis, adding: “We were woken up by gun shots in the early hours. The casualty figure is high, but we cannot say the exact figure.”

Police spokesman Joseph Kwaji said the command was on top of the situation, adding: “I have not gotten the casualty figure yet.”

Motorists on the Yola/Wukari/Zaki-Biam Road sought alternative routes. Some returned to Jalingo, the Taraba State capital.

  • Muslims are not terrorists, say clerics

Islamic clerics in the country have said Muslims are not terrorists contrary to wide belief.

Delivering a paper entitled “Islamic Solution to Terrorism” at a lecture organised by the Right Path Prayer Group in Abuja, Sheikh Abdulrauf Abdulhameed Oloriomokewu Khalifahtul Quardiriyyah said Allah is a lover of peace; hence, every Muslim must love peace.

“Muslims are not terrorists because there are lots of messages in the Quran that enjoin Muslims to shun terrorism. Allah loves gentleness. I just finished telling you the story of how Prophet (SWT) got the freedom to enter Makkah; it was through peaceful settlement. So, every Muslim must be peace-loving, because Allah (SWT) is a lover of peace and the religion is a religion of peace,” he said.

Oloriomokewu argued that the Boko Haram insurgents have no justification for killing people.

“The Quran says that you should not let the affliction meted to you disturb you from being faithful, from doing justice. They don’t have justification for killing people; they don’t have justification for killing Muslims because there is a strong warning that if you kill a Muslim, you will be in hell fire. Therefore, they should stop this act. Let’s forgive ourselves and look for a way forward,” he said.

The cleric advised that the way out of insurgency is for everybody to go back to God and to promote peace.

His words: “Let’s come back to God as all the prophets have done. Don’t let us say it is President Goodluck Jonathan or the Senators; let all of us together come back to God because God has not created anybody that he cannot overcome.

“God has not created anybody that he cannot deal with and God has not created any situation that he cannot be on top of. We have to promote peace. If we promote peace in the country, definitely those people will stop being aggressive as they are now.”

He corroborated Ustaz Mustapha Shuaib Agbarere’s statement that such belief is a misconception.

“Muslims are not terrorists and Islam is not a religion of terrorism. We know why people will just gather among themselves and create an avenue of terror in any society. Among the factors that contribute to such situations are injustice; inequality as well as social and economic imbalance.”

Proffering solution to the problem, Ustaz Agbarere said besides going back to Quran, Nigeria should begin to do justice and be kind to everyone without fear or favour.

“We Muslims should forgive whatever grievances among ourselves so that Allah can forgive us and we also contribute prayerfully for God to descend his mercy and peace in our country.”

  • We are Muslims and we preach peace

It is surprising that a nation currently undergoing security challenges such as insurgency, kidnapping, militancy and the likes can be hurt from an intentional attempt to steer commotion by a supposedly guided, but misguided section of our nation. At a time like this when every government and non-governmental establishments are on red alert due to their safety, nothing should be the role of every responsible and conscious citizen of our beloved country than to help them in that regard.

University of Ilorin is a well- known institution that gives zero tolerance to acts ranging from cultism, thuggery, immorality and insecurity among other forms of anti-social vices. Not only that, it has been playing a pivotal role in maintaining that every sections in the school is safe. Starting from the entrance of the school, that is few kilometers from the main school area, you would be subjected to a thorough search that doesn’t exclude your vehicle. Not only that, you would also identify yourself with a valid identity card which is your visa into the school compound. Mind you, the security alertness doesn’t only stop at that as you would constantly be under the watchful eyes of security personnel, both in uniform and mufti.

It is, however, dumbfounding and uncalled for that a scrupulous microscopic part of the whole entity of Nigeria, who because of his/her personal interest in causing commotion can put pen to paper and write malicious information about the better by far university that has been the envy of all due to its excellence in all facets of academic and moral endeavors.

Identified as ‘’Biola Azeez’’, he/she wrote in the Sunday, July 20, 2014 edition of the Nigerian Tribune that: “Religious fundamentalists invade UNILORIN. No, they are mere Muslim youths”. Nothing can justify this lackadaisical attitude than the fact that whoever he/she is, his/her intention is to disrupt the peaceful coexistence that is being enjoyed by adherents of both Islam and Christianity in the university and the country at large. Apart from the fact that the university has an interreligious council that takes care of all affairs that affects faithful of both religions, it has made sure that the dress codes, as stipulated by any religion is practiced by its adherents without molestation, as no religion supports lewd and immoral dressing. This is just to mention a few.

An act that can be judged as the peak of treason and conspiracy one does against his/ her country is exemplified in the contents of the said write-up, as it is based on an erroneous investigation. Therein, he /she quoted the Chief Imam of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Abdul Ganiyy Oladosu. On inquiry from him, he was not aware of such development. The imam, who was utterly surprised on hearing the new development, blatantly refuted the claim has he said no one has asked him about things like that.

Furthermore, the writer proceeded in launching an offensive attack on the image of the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN), Unilorin Branch, whose headquarters is situated inside the  central mosque in the school, by stating that membership are been called for therein. Just a visit to the central mosque would convince the doubting Thomas that the Muslim students association that is being castigated preaches nothing but the pristine Islam that is being sent by Allah through the prophet (S.A.W). It is, therefore, pertinent to note that MSSN doesn’t fraternize, for all Muslim students on campus are automatic members of the society.

On the issue of cutting of trousers and forbidding taking pictures, the writer, who succeeded in painting the picture the bad way, as that has been the norms of some journalists against the doctrines of Islam, should be aware that it is the tradition of the prophet that the trousers of the male should not exceed the ankles. Nobody can refute that fact as it has been so since the advent of Islam. Same thing applies to the taking of pictures as scholars of Islam frown against that act. Meanwhile, the picture in question is that of human beings.

However, if the writer doesn’t know the meaning of fundamentalism, he/she might get the 7th edition of the Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary which puts the meaning as: ‘’the practice of following very strictly, the basic rules and teachings of any religion’’. A person with the right control of English grammar would not dispute the fact that, according to the definition of fundamentalism, that one who refrains from the practice of fundamental principles of any religion is out of such religion.

Your being a Muslim is, however, the practice of its fundamental principle. There is a distinct difference between insurgency and fundamentalism. I hope the writer gets that well.

In conclusion, the general public should be aware of people like Biola Azeez, as they are agents of destruction who find joy in disrupting the peaceful coexistence of any setting. This, however, states that the accusation leveled against the school, the Muslim community and the Muslim students’ society on campus is baseless and can lead to a fracas among innocent people, if the information gets into wrong hands. We are Muslims and we preach peace so that our nation that is bound in freedom, peace and unity would not be divided because of the personal propagation of a propaganda that can lead to a lot of brouhaha.
