  • ‘How N-power scheme changed our lives’

Many people never gave the policy a chance when  it was mooted. But the N-Power programme of the Federal Government is changing lives of the unemployed youths in Ekiti State.

The scheme was evolved to take unemployed graduates off the streets, deploy them to volunteer services of their fatherland and pay them stipends.

The scheme is divided into N-Teach, N-Agro and N-ICT where they are deployed based on their disciplines and what they have proficiencies for.

Those in N-Teach serve as teachers in public schools, those in N-Agro work as commercial farmers while those in N-ICT use their talents in Information and Communication Technology to their maximum benefit.

Apart from being paid N30, 000 per month, the beneficiaries are given small iPads as working tools which assist them to carry out their daily activities.

The beauty of the scheme was celebrated in Ekiti State recently where beneficiaries testified to the ways the scheme had changed their lives and gave them hope.

Apparently impressed by the gains made from N-Power, beneficiaries in Ekiti State have pledged their support for the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019.

They spoke at the one-year anniversary of the scheme in the state held in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, where the Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, represented President Buhari.

A total of 3,600 beneficiaries in Ekiti joined the N-Power scheme in 2016 while 8,000 were admitted into the scheme last year.

A beneficiary, Biodun Daramola said Buhari has shown commitment to the empowerment of the youth by committing N6 billion as monthly stipends to over 200,000 beneficiaries all over the country.

Daramola said: “Because of what our President has done, I want every youth in Nigeria to support the APC government during the 2019 general elections.

Other beneficiaries who testified that the scheme had changed their lives included Feyisayo Falegan, Adesoji Adedeji and Oluseye Odetola who said they had used the monthly stipends to set up their own businesses, even as they called for sustenance of the scheme.

Adedeji said: “I was able to save some money from our monthly allowances. I love agriculture so much and I acquired a piece of land in Isinbode-Ekiti.”

Another beneficiary, Ajayi Samuel said: “My area of interest is teaching. I have a post-graduate degree in Education which enabled me to establish a continuing education centre.

“I employed 10 corps members to teach in my centre.

Odetola said: “Through the programme, I have been able to set up a computer centre in Ise-Ekiti where I have employed four people.”

The President of Ekiti State N-Power beneficiaries, Dare Oladimeji  said: “We are here to appreciate the initiator of the N-Power programme, President Buhari.

“Apart from the N30, 000 each beneficiary receives monthly, we were also given electronic devices free. Mr. President has delivered us from the shackles of poverty.”

Speaking at the event, Fayemi said youth empowerment is very essential to the Buhari administration’s agenda to make them contribute meaningfully to nation-building.

The minister urged the youth who are yet to get their permanent oter cards (PVCs) to do so to vote APC at the forthcoming elections to have such schemes sustained.

Fayemi promised to get permanent jobs for 10 beneficiaries in each of N-Teach, N-Agro and N-ICT.

He said: “The vision and mission of Mr. President is to assure you of a better future, you must support the President to sustain the scheme.

“If you want this programme to continue, vote wisely and intelligently to ensure that APC continues at the centre.”

Explaining how N-Power came to being, Fayemi said the scheme was conceived by the Policy Committee of the Buhari Presidential Campaign Directorate which he headed.

He said: “When I was governor of Ekiti State, one of the key programmes we had was the Youth Volunteer Corps for 10,000 volunteers who were paid N10, 000 monthly for two years while 20,000 aged people were receiving N5, 000 monthly.

“That is why Mr. President was determined to add value to the lives of our youths.

“This is the beginning and not the end.  So, you must support the President to sustain the scheme.”

Guest lecturer at the event, Prof. Kunle Ajayi, who praised the Federal Government for engaging over 200,000 youths all over the country through the N-Power scheme, suggested that the number of beneficiaries should be increased to one million per year.

Ajayi, who is Director of Institute of Peace, Security and Governance at the Ekiti State University (EKSU), also urged the Federal Government to convert the scheme to permanent jobs, even as he urged the government to establish Empowerment Finance Bank.

Ekiti State Director of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mr. Dayo Famosaya, said many people did not believe that the scheme would come into fruition, describing N-Power as a promised fulfilled by President Buhari.

“The beneficiaries are not known to Mr. President, they are not even known to the governor. It was a clear and transparent process of selection,” he said.

Although the scheme is seen as a temporary appointment, many of the beneficiaries use the savings made from their monthly allowances to set up businesses of their own, thereby becoming employers of labour.

Apparently impressed by the gains made from N-Power, beneficiaries in Ekiti State have pledged their support for the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019.

The beneficiaries said the scheme has saved them from the trauma of unemployment.

Adedeji said: “I was able to save some money from our monthly allowances. I love agriculture so much and I acquired a piece of land in Isinbode-Ekiti.

“I now have a fish pond which is fetching me some income. Through that, I take care of my myself and employ some people to work for me.”

Another beneficiary, Ajayi Samuel said: “My area of interest is teaching. I have a post-graduate degree in Education which enabled me to establish a continuing education centre.

But many of the beneficiaries also urged the Federal Government to transform the scheme into permanent jobs for them.

The President of Ekiti State N-Power beneficiaries, Dare Oladimeji, said he and his colleagues appreciated President Buhari for evolving the scheme.

Oladimeji said: “We are here to appreciate the initiator of the N-Power programme, President Buhari.

“Apart from the N30, 000 each beneficiary receives monthly, we were also given electronic devices free. Mr. President has delivered us from the shackles of poverty.

“The N-Power programme has been meaningful and successful. We want government to employ us as federal civil servants. We need permanent jobs.”

Speaking at the event, Fayemi said youth empowerment is very essential to the Buhari administration’s agenda to make them contribute meaningfully to nation-building.

The minister, who said he was impressed with the testimonies given by the beneficiaries on how N-Power had transformed their lives, said the scheme would continue as long as the APC remains in power.

Fayemi, however, urged the youth who are yet to get their permanent oter cards (PVCs) to do so to vote APC at the forthcoming elections to have such schemes sustained.

“The President is in love with the young people and that is why he will continue to empower you. Make sure you collect your PVCs.

“If you want this programme to continue, vote wisely and intelligently to ensure that APC continues at the centre to ensure that the APC returns to power (in Ekiti) this year so that programmes like this will continue.”

“Mr. President put me in the Policy Committee of his Campaign Directorate where I was Director of Policy and Strategy. We intended a programme which would put our youths on a scheme that would provide them with a reasonable living wage.

“That is why Mr. President was determined to add value to the lives of our youths. I have been impressed with the testimonies we have heard from the beneficiaries.

“This is the beginning and not the end; the vision and mission of the President is to assure you of a good future. So, you must support the President to sustain the scheme.”

  • Global investments in Nigeria hit $4.1bn, says Osinbajo

Global investments in Nigeria hit $4.1bn, says Osinbajo

    * Osinbajo says no past govt in Nigeria ever employed 200,000 unemployed graduates at once, like Muhammadu Buhari Administration with N-Power.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has disclosed that the global investments in Nigeria has increased from $908 million in the first quarter of 2017 to $4.1 billion now.

He made the remark in a media chat on Thursday at the World Economic Forum in Davos,  Switzerland.

On the claim that the security situation in Nigeria is a deterrent for global investors, he said “Global investors are coming. As a matter of fact, we are doing much better than ever before. If you look at the difference between Q1 of 2017 and now, there is a lift from $908 million to $4.1 billion.

“There is no deterrent. I think that global investors understand that there are security challenges everywhere and that so long as you are able to provide enough grounds for people to believe that, by and large, there is safety. Look at what is going on elsewhere in the world, security is a challenge everywhere. The duty of government is to ensure that security is maintained as robustly as possible.

“Sometimes by the very nature of security concerns, if something is happening in the Delta or up North somewhere, it really does provide a challenge for security agencies, but it is an opportunity to beef up security.

“We are recruiting policemen, we are even trying to build up the army and recruit more people into the army. For instance, if you look at what happened during the clashes in Southern Kaduna, we had to locate a military formation there. We may have to do that in several other places, locating military formations where we find communal violence. Security is dynamic; you have to keep working at it.” he said

On the threat by the Niger Delta Avengers to resume attacks, he said “Let me say that we are in constant consultations with all of the groups in the Niger Delta, but more importantly, we are working on all of the issues that we agreed with PANDEF. We are engaged with the groups; we have opened the Maritime University, we are working hard on the Modular Refineries which we hope will be a replacement for some of the illegal refineries and also create opportunities in the Niger Delta.

“We are in constant consultations, there are many groups in the Niger Delta, including the Niger Delta Avengers, and we are in constant consultations.”

On the major takeaways from the several bilateral meetings he attended, he said “I think the major thing is collaboration, which is really where everybody is at. The world has become a much more interconnected place. There is really little that is being done in Nigeria that doesn’t have some kind of either regional or global impact in the world.

“A lot of what we are talking about is collaboration; economic collaboration, collaboration against terrorism and all manners of extremist behaviours. That is what I am taking away.”

Osinbajo added “You don’t sign agreements here; all you can do is what I have said. Talk about what can be done, in what areas we can cooperate, what are the best and easiest ways of working together. You can’t wait to sign conventions; the world is moving far too quickly, the issues are so dynamic.”

Speaking on the US’s welcome for a weaker dollar in Nigeria, Osinbajo said “We are naturally concerned about currency issues everywhere, but a weaker dollar does not necessarily hurt us (Nigeria).  We are concerned most about ensuring our exports are cheaper. Our concern is how to make ourselves competitive with our foreign exchange. So we have to deal with our own currency issues, ensure our currency is stable and adequate to meet with the challenges posed to us at this time. We are more concerned about sorting ourselves out and remaining competitive.

“The issue for us is in ensuring that the currency is stable. What the NAFEX (Nigerian Autonomous Foreign Exchange) window does is, more or less, to provide an opportunity for the Naira to have its real value against the dollar. In some senses, we are there.

“What works today is some sort of intervention; you can’t just open up and say, let things go the way they want. You just mentioned that the US would like to see a weaker dollar, so obviously there is intervention somewhere. We want the market to dictate as much as possible, but where we find that there may be complications, we are ready to intervene.”

On the claim that Nigeria is politically and economically stable, he said “I think so. The economy is certainly in much more better state than it was 2 years ago and even 4 years ago. Our reserves are at $40 billion, the highest it has been in 4 years. Our capital market is set to be the best performing in the world. We have moved up 24 places in the ease of doing business, agriculture is up by over 3%. We are becoming a net producer of rice, 7 million to 11 million tonnes of paddy which has never happened before. We will be self-sufficient in rice production. Investments are also coming in, so economically; I would say that we are doing very well.

“The critical thing is that the man on the streets must feel the impact, which sometimes takes a while, because when you are talking about growth, there must be jobs, but growth doesn’t immediately translate to jobs.

“What we are trying to do is to establish a system of governance that first of all, emphasises prudence in financial spending, which is what we had in mind to do with the TSA and with the general controls in spending. So we are earning 60% less than what was earned in 2014, but we are spending N1.3 trillion on capital expenditure, the highest in the history of the country, with 60% less revenue.

“What is important to bear in mind, is that we have changed the model of government in Nigeria substantially. We place emphasis on good governance especially financial prudence, which is very crucial. That is something in the past few years we haven’t seen. That is why we able to work with 60% less revenue, that has improved. We are doing better in terms of managing our finances, and in terms of doing much more with far less.” he said

Asked to highlight the timeline when Nigerians will start to feel the impact of the economy,  he said “I think we are seeing the progress day by day. For example, look at investments; when an investment comes in, it doesn’t immediately translate to jobs until a few months.

“When you look at youth unemployment, for the first time in the history of this country, we have employed 200,000 graduates, there is no administration that has done that. We are also giving them devices for their training, so that each of them would have a device that they can use in training, in code writing and computing.

“They can be better prepared for private employment, entrepreneurship in whatever they want to do. 200,000 young people by a government through one specific programme, and we are doing 300,000 more this year, so we are hoping to employ 500,000 graduates. There is unemployment all over the world, especially over Sub-Saharan Africa, but we are addressing it aggressively.” Osinbajo added.

Asked to comment on Donald Trump’s alleged comments about some African countries and its likely effect on the relationship between the US and Nigeria, Osinbajo said “At the diplomatic level, there have been interactions, the ambassador was invited by our Foreign Affairs Minister and I’m sure you are familiar with the conversation. The most important thing is that the overall interests of our countries are greater than anything else. We need each other, Africa needs America and America needs Africa in several strategic ways.

“We must continue to maintain our relationship. I’m also told that Mr. Trump said that he did not make those statements and we should accept that.” he said.

Asked if he intends to run with President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019, Osinbajo said “I’m absolutely focused at this time on doing the job that we have been elected to do. That is my concern for now.”

Asked to speak on the concrete steps being taken to boost non-oil revenue, he said “I’m sure you are familiar with some of the figures; non-oil revenues have gone up by 40%; mining and agriculture are critical areas for us. Agriculture, in particular, is a major area of focus and that is one of the greatest contributors to GDP growth at this point.

“We intend to do more especially in the area of agro-allied businesses and manufacturing, and that remains for us, a very critical aspect of the economy which we are working on. If you look at our Economy Recovery Growth Plan, and some of the very specific implementation objectives of that plan – our ease of doing business is focused on creating an environment where the non-oil sector can really expand and prosper in ways which will benefit jobs and growth.

“The major concern is how to improve agriculture and do much more in mining, which is also an area of growth and manufacturing.

“Special Economic Zones (SEZ) are one of the things we have come here to discuss; we had a special session on it. What we are also trying to do is in the garment manufacturing. We want to become the hub in garment manufacturing in Africa.

“One of our SEZs is devoted to garment manufacturing and we are going about this by talking directly to the anchor investors, asking them what it will take, and what they want to ensure that it works. We are providing in those SEZs, adequate power and the infrastructure required.

“We also have the whole incentive regime. So with the SEZs, we have garment manufacturing, which is one example, and we create real opportunities and exponential growth in jobs.” Osinbajo said

On what Nigeria is taking away from the meeting with Bill Gates, Osinbajo said “The meeting focused on two areas; one is with the work being done in collaboration with Dangote Foundation and the Federal Government on Polio immunisation and also on agricultural transformation. Those are two major areas, as well as financial inclusion. We found that financial inclusion is crucial in the work we are doing, especially with our conditional cash transfers, we were hoping to reach a million people.

“We are finding it difficult to reach people in certain areas because there are no money agents or banks functioning in those areas. The work we are doing with Bill Gates and the Central Bank of Nigeria is on issuing guidelines on the mobile telephony aspect of financial inclusion. We now want a situation where you are able to do much more with mobile phones with respect to financial inclusion.

“That will help a great deal because we would be able to reach the farthest reaches of our country and bring more people into the regulated financial space so that more people can benefit from credit, funds and payments made by government and individual payments. This has to be by 2018.” he said

  • Oxfam urges FG to block leakages used by powerful individuals to evade tax

Oxfam urges FG to block leakages used by powerful individuals to evade tax

An international nongovernmental organization, Oxfam in Nigeria, has called on the Federal Government to work more to block all the leakages that powerful individuals explore to avoid tax and collect huge returns.

Acting Country Director, Oxfam in Nigeria, Constant Tchona, made the call at a media roundtable in Abuja on Tuesday.

According to him, if the leakages are blocked properly, it would add more revenue to government which could be used to provide infrastructure and other essential services to the poor.

He said the fortunes of the rich are often boosted by tax dodging and evasion, big returns to shareholders and executives.

Tchona said: “While the rich individuals are avoiding taxes, the poor are burdened with multiple taxations which hinder their businesses to grow. Poorly paid work for the many is supporting extreme wealth for the few. Women are the worse hit, and almost all super-rich are men, that is how the richest 1% accumulated 82% of the wealth created last year.

“We salute Nigeria Government’s efforts to alleviate poverty in programmes such as, the National Home-Grown School Feeding, N-Power for unemployed graduates, Conditional Cash Transfer, and the Government Empowerment and Enterprise Programme.

“We also commend the government on the review of the National Tax Policy, which if properly implemented will solve the issues related to tax and revenue leakages. We request Government to do more to implement policy that will close the gap between the rich and the poor.

“We ask government to work more to block all the leakages that the powerful individuals explore to avoid tax and collect huge returns. If done properly, this will give more revenues to government to provide infrastructure and other essential services to the poor.”

Tchona said inequality remained a major concern for Oxfam as world leaders are meeting in Davos, Switzerland at the World Economic Forum to deliberate on global economic issues.

He noted that Nigerians were worried by the widening inequality gap in the country.

Tchona explained that only the federal government can create a more equal society by prioritizing ordinary workers and small-scale food producers instead of the rich and powerful.

“It is hard to find a political or business leader these days who is not saying they are worried about inequality. Yet, actions not words, are what counts. Only Governments can create a more equal society by prioritizing ordinary workers and small-scale food producers instead of the rich and powerful.

“We are therefore calling on the government to: to ensure that all workers whether salaried or not receive a living wage that would enable them to have a decent life; eliminate the gender pay gap and protect the rights of female workers; ensure that the wealthy pay their fair share of taxes through a progressive tax regime and government cracks down on tax avoidance to invest more essential services for the poor,” he added.

  • N-Power begins physical verification of 300,000 volunteers on Dec. 4

N-Power begins physical verification of 300,000 volunteers on Dec. 4

The 300,000 successful candidates pre-selected under the Federal Government’s N-Power Scheme will undergo its physical verification phase from Dec. 4 to Dec. 14 in the 774 local government areas of the country.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Job Creation/Youth Employment, Mr Afolabi Imoukhuede said the verification would be done with the N-Power stakeholders in the states such as the National Orientation Agency, N-Power State team, National Assembly Monitors and Observers.

Imoukhuede explained that pre-selection could not be equated to final recruitment as those who fell short of the verification criteria and made faulty declarations in their applications would still be disqualified.

Accordingly, the presidential aide noted that after the compilation of successfully verified candidates, the final selection would be done followed by the deployment of the volunteers in the Agro, Teach, and Health categories across the country.

He noted that out of 2.54 million applicants, 2.25 million had their Bank Verification Numbers (BVN) validated prior to the assessment test phase while only 1.75 million responded to invitations to write tests.

In the State-by-State application breakdown, the North West geo-political zone had 33,039 applicants from Jigawa; 113,960 from Kaduna; 97,748 from Kano; 40,742 from Katsina; 30,975 from Kebbi; 22,501 from Sokoto and 32,186 from Zamfara.

From the North East, 50,552 applications came from Adamawa; Bauchi had 51,920; Borno had 55,264; Gombe had 27,980; Taraba had 36,987 while Yobe had 32,201.

In North Central, FCT led with 120,198 applications followed by Benue with 89,734 and Kwara with 77,338 while Niger had 73,236 applications; Nasarawa with 72,732; Plateau with 68,955 and Kogi with 61,789.

Enugu State led the applications in the South East with 81,891 followed by Anambra with 61,075 and Imo with 60,283; while Abia had 54,216 and Ebonyi with 39,030 applications.

In the South West, Lagos had 174,994 applications; Oyo had 133,281; Osun had 87,281; Ekiti had 37,594; Ogun had 74,940 while Ondo had 69,224 applications.

The highest applications from the South South came from Rivers with 145,773 followed by Delta with 106,509 and Edo with 63,507. Others are Akwa Ibom with 56,143; Bayelsa with 23,659 and Cross River with 49,596.

From the statistics, states with highest applications were Lagos, Rivers, Oyo, FCT and Kaduna in while states with the lowest were Sokoto, Bayelsa, Gombe, Kebbi and Zamfara.

Imoukhuede observed that the selection process was transparent with the first priority being the full validation of BVN to payment account details of applicants, to avoid a repeat of inability to pay any of the new volunteers as a result of unmatched payment details.

He further stated that other factors considered were equity and fairness by linking selection to population, using federal constituencies and addressing demand distribution of unemployed graduates across the country.

He added that the process considered correcting the deployment/utilization challenges arising from the 2016 edition as well as rural-urban distribution balance where priority was given to rural areas especially N-Agro applicants.

The first batch of 200,000 graduates will, in December 2017, begin their second year of the two-year paid volunteer scheme, while the process of mobilising and deploying non-graduate programme began about a month ago.

    •Buhari: culture of impunity receding

No fewer than 176,160 graduate beneficiaries have so far been deployed under the N-Power programme of Social Investment Programmes (SIPs), the Federal Government has said

This is part of issues addressed in a book, entitled: ‘‘Making Steady, Sustainable Progress for Nigeria’s Peace and Prosperity: A Mid-Term Report Card on the Buhari Administration’’.

The book is authored by the Presidential Media Team. It will be presented by All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday. Eminent journalist and APC chieftain Prince Tony Momoh will be the reviewer.

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity Femi Adesina; Senior Special Assistant to the President on  Media and Publicity Garba Shehu  and Senior Special Assistant to the President, Media and Publicity, (Office of the Vice President) Laolu Akande jointly edited the book.

It added that President Muhammadu Buhari has declared that the culture of impunity inherited at the inception of his government, two years ago, is receding.

“Corruption, insecurity and the parlous economy were the challenges inherited at inception.

‘‘They have been addressed and are still being addressed boldly and honestly.

“The task of revamping the economy remains work-in-progress,’’ President Buhari wrote in the foreword of the 348-book, which is a compendium of notable achievements of his administration since May 29, 2015.

According to the book, the N-Power programme, which has reached 200,000 graduate beneficiaries from all 36 states, including the FCT, has deployed 176,160 beneficiaries.

The book also reveals that Nigeria realised N212.73 billion from agricultural product exports at the end of the fourth quarter of 2016.

It stated that the products, which contributed most to agricultural product exports in the fourth quarter, were sesame seeds with N6.46 billion, frozen shrimps and prawns with N4.4 billion.

According to the report, flour and meals of soya beans contribute N2.59 billion; cashew nuts in shell, N0.95 billion and crude palm kernel with N0.62 billion.

It noted that 46 per cent of the total 200,000 beneficiaries selected were female to ensure gender balance while 1,126 applicants with disabilities emerged successful.

It also added that a centralised Project Management Unit was being set up to carry out monitoring and evaluation of the programme across the six geopolitical zones.

“In addition to this, an MoU has been reached with the National Orientation Agency to also carry out monitoring and evaluation in all 36 states including the FCT.”

The N-Power programme is aimed at addressing the challenge of youth unemployment by providing a structure for large scale and relevant work skills acquisition and development.

Beneficiaries are expected to channel skills acquired to fixing inadequate public services and stimulating the larger economy.

Buhari wrote the foreword of the 348-page book, which contains milestones of all the Federal ministries and some select department and agencies of government, in the last two years.

The book also detailed how the Buhari’s administration is blocking corruption loopholes in the nation’s public institutions.

In an excerpt of the 348-page publication, the team notes that beyond arrest and prosecution of suspects, the Buhari government is strengthening public institutions for accountability and transparency.

The book explores measures being instituted by anti-graft agencies, especially the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), in this regard since the last two years. These include conduct of System Study and Review in ministries, departments and agencies, and Corruption Risk Assessment (CRA) in various sectors of the nation’s economy.

t says the education, health, water and aviation sectors as well as e-governance platforms, including the Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System (IPPIS), have benefited from the ICPC’s CRA exercise.

The exercise, it adds, has led to the identification of weaknesses in the systems that create opportunities for corruption.

N-Power Health Volunteers take malaria outreach to Oredo LGA

Following the collaboration of Edo State Government and the Catholic Relief Services (CRS) to kick malaria out of the state, the N-Power Health Volunteers in Utagban Community in Oredo Local Government Area have organised a one-day malaria awareness seminar.

The state government has a commitment to primary healthcare and has been collaborating with relevant development partners to deliver its mandate on essential health services to communities.

The Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to President Muhammadu Buhari on Job Creation and Youth Employment Programme, Mr. Afolabi Imoukhuede, while delivering an address at the seminar, on Friday, commended the Presidency for initiating the programme which has impacted the lives of young Nigerians.

Represented by the focal person in Edo State, Osayuwamen Aladeshelu, Mr. Imoukhuede stated that the N-Health programme is poised to liberate unemployed graduates and enable them contribute their quota to societal development.

Mr. Imoukhuede noted that the N-Power Health volunteers at Utagban organised the programme to support Edo State Government’s fight against malaria.

He commended efforts of the volunteers in strengthening primary healthcare delivery in their host community, adding, “The N-Heath volunteers organised this programme to provide free malaria test and drugs to residents of Utagban community assisted by qualified health personnel. This is a welcome development as the people ordinarily would not have been exposed to this kind of opportunity.”

An N-Power Health Volunteer, Mr. Enisuoh Martin, who delivered a lecture on Malaria, said it was regrettable that despite the fact that malaria is a preventable disease, it has killed millions of people globally, stressing that measures such as sleeping under treated mosquito nets and living in a clean environment can make the public safer.

“The Edo State Government tapped into the federal government’s initiative on malaria and the commitment in implementing the programme has yielded positive results. It is now common place to find the nets in homes across the state.”

Oredo Primary Healthcare Centre (PHC) coordinator, Dr. Osaze Ezomo thanked the volunteers and called on the community’s residents to ensure they utilise the opportunity to get tested and treated.

Presidency criticises N-Power volunteers’ rampage in Delta

The Presidency on Thursday criticised the violent attack on the Warri 1 MTN Connect Store by N-Power volunteers who attempted to forcibly collect N-Power devices not allocated to them.

The incident occurred on Monday and led to the alleged assault on a pregnant staff member of the telecommunications office in Warri, Delta.

Mr Afolabi Imoukhuede, the  Senior Special Assistant to the President on Job Creation/Youth Employment, in a statement described such action as unacceptable.

“I received with great displeasure the report that N-Power beneficiaries in Warri bombarded the Warri 1 MTN Connect Store for N-Power devices last Monday.

“The beneficiaries were unruly and assaulted a pregnant staff member of MTN.

“There is no excuse tenable for such behavior; let me be very clear, that such behavior is unacceptable; there is no reason under the face of the sun for such behavior,’’ Imoukhuede stated.

According to him, this terrible behaviour will be investigated and appropriate sanctions will be meted out to those found to be behind this ugly incidence.

He said the notice should also serve as a warning to other beneficiaries who might wish to temporarily forget the acceptable conduct at the point of device collection.

“Anyone who is caught will be dismissed immediately from the N-Power programme.

“At all times, the interest of the beneficiaries is our utmost concern and we will continue to address issues that distress you individually and collectively,’’ the presidential aide added.

Imoukhuede remarked that proper conduct, discipline and work place ethics are the hallmark of the N-Power programme – skills and job enhancement creation investment under the National Social Investment Programme (NSIP).

He said, ” under the NSIP, our unemployed youths have an opportunity to improve their skills and competence under a two-year Full Time Paid Volunteer programme in their community schools, health centres or farms.’’

He added that the skills acquisition would thus empower them for gainful employment after their exit from the programme.

Imoukhuede recalled that the Federal Government entered into an Asset Finance Agreement with the Bank of Industry to provide devices to N-Power beneficiaries at little or no cost.

“At every point between purchasing, pre-loading and now distribution, we have updated beneficiaries.

“We had even gone as far as uploading videos of the pre-loading process so beneficiaries could witness first-hand the hard work that goes into packaging each device.

“We similarly explained the process of shipping from the point of pre-loading to individual states,’’ he added.

Consequently, the presidential aide warned volunteers against fomenting trouble as misconducts would not be tolerated.

No fewer than 200,000 graduates nationwide have been participating in N-Power since 2016 and earning N30,000 each monthly, while another batch of 300,000 would soon be engaged.

  • FG committed to ending poverty – FCT Minister

FG committed to ending poverty – FCT Minister

The FCT Minister Malam Muhammad Bello says that the Federal Government ( FG ) is committed to putting an end to poverty in the country.

Bello stated this at a charity football match tagged: ‘Kick – Out Poverty’ organised to mark 2017 International Day for the Eradication of Poverty on Sunday in Abuja.

According to him, one of the greatest challenges confronting humanity in the 21st Century is chronic and excruciating poverty that is unsparing of race and creed or even nationality.

“Combating this obstacle to good quality living has been global issue for as long as the existence of humanity.

“The present administration through its social safety and economic programmes consisting of the N-Power scheme, the school feeding programme as well as the conditional cash transfer scheme are all geared towards ending poverty.

“The dispensation is moving towards ending the phenomenon circle in which many Nigerians have unfortunately found themselves,’’ he said.

The minister said the FCT is keying into all the programmes while embarking on several others of its own.

“We are, however, all aware that the economic downturn has made it quite clear that government alone cannot meet all its obligations in this regard.

“That is why when non-governmental organisations such as Elizabeth Foundation come with laudable programmes such as this football match today to partner with us in this anti-poverty fight, we welcome them with open arms.

“The aim of this football match is to create public awareness on the problems posed by grinding poverty and what we all can do as individuals or group to combat it,’’ he added.

Bello urged both the spectators and players to leave the match venue with a clear determination to do all that is possible to end the poverty vicious circle.

He appealed to the legislative arm of government, who happened to be part of the participants of the match to enact laws that will provide succour for the needy.

“And the celebrities should use their fame to draw attention to the dangers poverty poses to the society,’’ he said.

Speaking earlier, Mrs Angel Adelami, Founder of Elizabeth Foundation said the foundation is vision of like-minded persons who believe that poverty is neither normal nor acceptable.

“We are concern with the plight of widows suffering cultural malpractices, children orphaned or displaced by conflicts and products of broken homes.

“The common denominator for all these groups is that they are all poor. We at Elizabeth Foundation believe that poverty is a disease.

“Like measles, tuberculosis, malaria and ebola, poverty is curable and can be eliminated. Our present areas of focus are provision of clean potable water, sanitation and skills acquisition,’’ she said.

She said that without the active collaboration and partnership of the stakeholders like government, NGOs, corporate bodies, the Media and victims of poverty, the goals cannot be achieved

“Therefore, in partnership with government, we specifically note the place of the legislature as an important branch that can change the course of the ugly trend through purposeful legislation.

“We must also ensure that government interventions aimed at poverty reduction achieved meaningful results and targets,’’ she added.

Adelami said that the foundation need to raise at least N200 million to enable them undertake several projects and programmes across the country.

“We sincerely hope and appeal that you will meaningfully contribute both morally and financially to the fund in order to increase our capacity to kick out poverty in Nigeria,’’ she said.

Also, the Speaker House of Representatives, Mr Yakubu Dogara congratulated the foundation for coming up with such great idea.

He assured Nigerians that the legislative arm would do all that is beneficial to all Nigerians.

He called on executive arm of government to do the needful to give the nation the best.

The novelty match between the Team House of Representatives and the Team Nigeria Media ended two goals to nil in favour of the Team House of Rep.
