The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Committee (JCC), Ondo Axis, has called on the Ondo State government to urgently intervene in resolving the lingering issues of unpaid salary arrears and management-related challenges at Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo.

In a statement issued by its Chairman, Comrade Oluwarotimi Tobiloba, the student body stressed that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s intervention is crucial to restoring academic stability and ensuring students can return to their classrooms without further delays.

Tobiloba expressed optimism that the governor would promptly address the concerns, emphasizing the need for swift action to prevent further disruption of academic activities at the institution.

He said, “Yesterday, I led a delegation of student leaders, including the leadership of the Students’ Union Government of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, to a crucial meeting with the Executive Governor of Ondo State, His Excellency, Hon. Dr. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, at the Governor’s Office in Akure.

“This meeting was held in response to the directive of His Excellency, who earlier tasked me with assessing the ongoing crisis at RUGIPO and presenting the concerns of the students directly to him.

“During the engagement, I appreciated the Governor for his proactive leadership and recent interventions in the institution, particularly the approval of the Convocation Ceremony and partial payment of salary arrears.

“I also expressed my dissatisfaction with the prolonged industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics (SSANIP), which has disrupted academic activities and placed our students in a state of uncertainty and hardship.”

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Lagos Chapter, under the leadership of Com. Quadri Abdul-Raheem has facilitated bursary grants for students in Yaba LCDA.

The student body commended the Chairman of Yaba LCDA, Dr. Kayode Omiyale, for support to indigent and underprivileged students in Yaba community.

A statement by the Lagos NANS chairman said the bursary/grant scheme was facilitated for students in tertiary institutions domiciled within Yaba LCDA through proactive efforts of NANS.

According to him, Omiyale in a generous and compassionate move approved 80 bursary slots, which was distributed equally among students of UNILAG, YABATECH, FCET Akoka, and LASCOHET, adding that each beneficiary received a grant of ₦50,000 to support their tuition and academic expenses.

He stated that this initiative was a reflection of responsive and student-friendly leadership that brings great relief to many struggling students and reinforces importance of government intervention in supporting education at the grassroots.

Abdul-Raheem expressed gratitude to Omiyale for his unwavering commitment to youth development and educational empowerment.

He urged other Local Government and LCDA Chairmen across Lagos State to emulate the noble gesture by prioritizing student welfare within their constituencies.

He said: “In these challenging times, it is imperative that we remember our students, our future leaders, and extend hands of support to ensure they are not left behind due to financial hardship.

NANS urges Seyi Tinubu to remain focused, ignore critics

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called on Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to remain committed to his service to humanity and not be swayed by criticism.

In a statement signed by NANS Senate President, Usman Adamu Nagwza, the student body advised Seyi to ignore what it described as the distractions of political jobbers and clout-chanmmsers intent on derailing his noble mission.

Nagwza noted that while the voices of mischief may be loud, they lack substance and are undeserving of any dignified response.

“The brilliance of a man whose heart beats for the people cannot be dimmed by naysayers,” the statement added.

He said, “You cannot rewrite the truth with propaganda, nor can you derail a destiny anchored in service and goodwill. Mr. Seyi Tinubu has immortalized his name while still living and has done so while shaping destinies, uplifting lives, and creating legacies that will outlive transient controversies.

“On behalf of millions of Nigerian students across the federation, we say: thank you for being a light in a generation that desperately needs it. Continue your good works, for history shall be kind to you.”

The statement reads, “The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) wishes to unequivocally express its dismay at the recent wave of unprovoked vilification and media blackmail targeted at Mr. Seyi Tinubu, a man whose contributions to youth development, humanitarian advancement, and nation-building have been nothing short of laudable.

“It is indeed a paradox of our time that in a society where those who selflessly commit their lives to service ought to be venerated, they are instead subjected to cynical disparagement. Life, as we know it, often thrives in contradiction and it is profoundly regrettable that a man like Seyi Tinubu, who has consistently embodied humility, benevolence, and sacrifice, is being mischaracterized by individuals whose only stock-in-trade is misinformation and mischief-making.

“It defies logic that Mr. Seyi Tinubu, whose mere status could have entitled him to the trappings of privilege and aloofness, has instead consciously chosen the path of accessibility, humility, and philanthropic investment in the lives of ordinary Nigerians. Rather than recline in the ceremonial glory of the presidency’s corridors, he has stooped to serve, lifted others, and become a beacon of hope for thousands of young people.

“To now see such a man being castigated for acts of compassion is both shameful and intellectually dishonest.

“We are, therefore, compelled at the highest level of student leadership, to set the record straight: the internal brouhaha involving Isah Abubakar and the leadership of NANS is a purely domestic affair within the organization. It bears absolutely no correlation, linkage, or implication involving Mr. Seyi Tinubu. Attempts to rope him into unrelated institutional politics are reckless, mischievous, and a desperate act of deflection by those who would rather destroy than build.

“Mr. Seyi Tinubu has, time and again, proven to be an altruist par excellence, a youth ambassador, a bridge-builder, a consistent friend of the Nigerian student community and the Nigerian youths at large. His passion for empowerment, his commitment to creating opportunities, and his spirit of generosity are virtues that deserve applause, not condemnation.”

NANS urges FG to intervene in FUOYE management crisis

The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called for the immediate intervention of the Federal Ministry of Education in the crisis at the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Ekiti State.

NANS made the demand during a joint protest by the National Association of University Students (NAUS) at the Federal Ministry of Education, Abuja.

National Public Relations Officer of NANS, Samson Adeyemi, said that the students would continue to occupy the Ministry until the Minister of Education, Dr. Olatunji Alausa, resolves the festering crisis at the university.

He disclosed that the university was engulfed in crisis following sexual harassment allegations levelled against the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abayomi Sunday Fasina and the systemic protection of sexual offenders and silencing of victims.

According to NANS, the crisis was exacerbated following the suspension of a lecturer, Dr. Ngozi Ole and leaders of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) over their stand on the corrupt allegations and sexual harassment in the university.

Adeyemi said, “The Federal Ministry of Education must understand that the protest has already begun. We are no longer pleading. We are demanding justice.

“We will occupy the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Universities Commission (NUC), and the National Assembly every week. These protests will continue until the Honourable Minister of Education takes bold, courageous, and irreversible steps to right these wrongs.”

NANS spokesperson called for the establishment of an independent and non-partisan investigative panel to review all cases of sexual harassment and staff victimisation at FUOYE.

Adeyemi said that the Nigerian student community would not retreat until justice was done.

He called on civil society organisations, human rights groups, the media, and every Nigerian of conscience to support this cause, saying the time has come to rescue FUOYE and to protect Nigerian students.

Stop dragging Seyi Tinubu into NANS Affairs, group warns Atiku

The President, Coach Decorum Movement and the Director, West Africa Affairs of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Diaspora, Com. Joshua Olakunle, has warned the self-acclaimed President of the union, Atiku Isah to desist from dragging son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Seyi, into affairs of the union.

He lamented continued defamation and targeted propaganda against Seyi Tinubu, a private citizen, whose only known offense is his consistent support for youth and national development.

A statement by the NANS Diaspora Director declared that Seyi Tinubu has no affiliations with student unionism or any involvement in NANS leadership or operations, saying dragging his name into student politics is not only mischievous but a deliberate effort to destabilize the unity built in the student community.

He reaffirmed that the duly elected and recognised President of NANS is Comrade Olusola Oladoja, who emerged through a transparent and peaceful convention.

He said: “The leadership under Comrade Oladoja remains focused on its mandate to represent and defend the interests of Nigerian students across the globe.

“The unity and progress of NANS is our greatest strength, and it is this strength that threatens those who seek to divide us.

“If truly Atiku Isah and his political sponsors including their loud sympathizers like Omoyele Sowore, are not attempting to use student structures to cause national tension, then Seyi Tinubu’s name should not be part of their lies.”

He urged Atiku and his paymasters to desist from the underhanded tactics, saying Nigeria is growing stronger and more united under the current youth-focused administration, and will not allow desperate elements to drag it backward.

“Our attention has been drawn to recent reckless and misleading statements by, Atiku Isah, who has been parading himself as the President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).

“Let it be clearly stated that Atiku Isah neither contested the last convention nor held any constitutional office within NANS that qualifies him to aspire to the presidency.

“His activities are nothing but a desperate attempt to make a living by being a puppet in the hands of some faceless political actors who are intent on creating distractions in the country.

“Our message is simple: Stop the deceit. Stop the name-dropping. And stop attacking those who are actually building bridges of opportunity for Nigerian youth.”

  • Tale of Seyi Tinubu, NANS, and Isa Atiku Abubakar

Tale of Seyi Tinubu, NANS, and Isa Atiku Abubakar

    By Arabinrin Aderonke

Seyi Tinubu is a young Nigerian who has earned a reputation for his commitment to helping others and empowering the youth. Those who know him will agree that he is a quiet and reserved person, often going out of his way to uplift others while avoiding unnecessary publicity and attention.

Despite being the son of the president, Seyi doesn’t fit the stereotype of someone who might use their position for personal gains. In fact, it is quite the opposite. His focus has always been on meaningful contributions to Nigeria, especially the youth.

Through his work, he has provided scholarships, mentorship, and resources to countless Nigerians, and even recently he donated the sum of 500 million Naira to victims of the Maiduguri flood which ravaged 70 percent of the city and displaced millions of residents.

It’s quite laughable to see some of the things flying around online. The allegations pushed by Comrade Isa Atiku Abubakar, a factional NANS President who never contested for any elective position are not only false but completely out of touch with the character of the person he’s accusing.

They don’t make sense by any standard, and quite frankly, it’s disappointing to watch such desperate attempts at dragging someone who has done nothing but support young people.

Leadership has changed hands at the National Association of Nigerian Students. The election was conclusive. The process was public. Elected officials were sworn in, and the event drew the presence of governors, ministers, and respected personalities.

Nineteen new executives, led by Comrade Olushola Oladoja of the University of Jos, now carry the responsibility of representing millions of Nigerian students across the country.

Shortly after the elections, Isah Atiku posted pictures of his bruised body online and claimed he was attacked. Then he took it further by accusing Seyi Tinubu of plotting to assassinate him. Two days later, he changed the story again, this time saying he was kidnapped, offered a bribe, and beaten when he refused. Seyi Tinubu responded by making it clear he does not know Isah Atiku and has never met him.

What we are seeing looks like a badly planned attempt to tarnish someone’s name. Anyone who knows Seyi understands that he avoids drama. Unfortunately, people sometimes mistake kindness for weakness and try to exploit it for personal gain.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has long been a voice for students in Nigeria, advocating for their rights and working to improve their educational and social conditions. With the election of new executives, NANS now has a role to play in shaping the future of Nigerian students.

However, the leadership process has faced challenges, and it is necessary to address any attempts to undermine it with false claims.

After elections, it is common for those who didn’t win to form their groups and challenge the results. This has become a familiar pattern. But we must ask, could this be another attempt to create chaos or push personal agendas? Are some people willing to take this route just to gain power or influence? Is this what happens when parties form their groups to exploit the system for personal gain?

This issue must be addressed immediately. If we allow these distractions to continue, how can we focus on what truly matters, the future, and the well-being of Nigerian students? The youth are both the present and future of Nigeria.

Despite facing false accusations, Seyi Tinubu was not involved in any violence during the NANS inauguration. The event was peaceful with no disturbances. Let’s stay focused on the best interests of Nigerian students. Isah Atiku must stop spreading these fabricated lies.

Seyi Tinubu has made his position known. He is not involved, and he will not be dragged into a matter that does not concern him. Truthfully, the public can see through the performance.

It is time to focus on what matters. The baton has passed. Let the new leaders serve.

  • Sack VCs, rectors involved in mismanagement of student loan scheme, NANS tells govt

Sack VCs, rectors involved in mismanagement of student loan scheme, NANS tells govt

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called for the sack of heads of tertiary institutions that mismanaged funds meant for the student loan scheme implemented by the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).

NANS national president, Comrade Olushola Ladoja, made the call at a media parley at the weekend in Abuja.

Ladoja said the actions of some institutions, if left unchecked, may tarnish President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to ensuring inclusive access to education through the student loan scheme.

He disclosed that NELFUND would meet with all Student Union Government (SUG) Presidents of Nigerian campuses and NANS national executives in Abuja on Thursday.

According to him, the meeting is meant to discuss the implementation of the student laon scheme and address concerns around alleged deductions by some tertiary institutions, double collection of institutional fees and refusal to refund NELFUND beneficiaries, conspiring with banks and withholding disbursement announcements to make profits off the funds among other abuses.

He lauded the initiative, stressing that it has drastically reduced school dropouts and improved access to education for students from low-income backgrounds.

Ladoja disclosed that his team had earlier met with the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, and the Managing Director of NELFUND, Akintunde Sawyerr, to register their grievances.

He said both leaders assured that their complaints would be addressed.

Ladoja said: “And I also met with the NELFUND MD, and he told us they will also look into it. By this Thursday, the NELFUND has invited all the SUG Presidents of Nigerian campuses to have a meeting in Abuja. Let them come with their complaints, and the NANS executive will be there to discuss the problem, the way forward, and see how we can resolve it.

“I’m telling you categorically, as NANS President, that any Vice Chancellor, Rector or Provost, found withholding student loans or having any dubious dealings in this students’ loan administration, we will agitate for their removal. They must be removed from office, because while the Federal Government is trying to do things that will help Nigerians, some people are sabotaging it. And NANS will not accept that. We will fight whosoever is found wanting of such character.”

He expressed regret about media reports of alleged mismanagement in the administration of the programme by some heads of institutions and allegations by the National Orientation Agency (NOA) that several institutions have failed to inform students about loan disbursements made on their behalf, while still demanding tuition payments.

Recall that the Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Lanre Issa-Onilu, had revealed that anti-corruption agencies have been alerted to investigate certain tertiary institutions suspected of colluding with banks to undermine the student loan scheme.

Also, the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFund) recently raised the alarm over the conduct of some higher education institutions, accusing them of withholding critical information from beneficiaries.

According to Sawyerr, several institutions have failed to inform students that their tuition fees had already been paid directly to the schools by the loan Fund.

“Instead, these schools allegedly continued demanding payment from the students, leading to confusion and financial strain,” he said.

The NANS President condemned these practices, saying they worsen students’ struggles and constitute a breach of trust.

  • FUOYE students disown NANS petition against VC

FUOYE students disown NANS petition against VC

Students of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), have dissociated themselves from a petition by the national leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS)  against the university’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abayomi Fasina.

The NANS National President Comrade Olushola Oladoja had  written a petition to Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, calling for the immediate sack of Fasina and the university’s Governing Council members over alleged misconducts and other sundry allegations.

But, FUOYE Students Union Government, in a letter dated May 3rd, 2025, jointly signed by its President, Comrade Mary Abiodun and  Secretary-General, Comr. Lateef Ife and addressed to the Minister of Education faulted the petition against the university’s management.

The students body who described the petition as malicious, baseless and pure lies lacking any modicum of fact, said the petition was the handiwork of some individuals who seek to destabilize the university.

The SUG explained that the allegations contained in the petition neither reflect the current realities within the university community  nor the collective sentiment of the students.

The students body stated that VC  had been exonerated of allegations of sexual harassment levelled against him  after thorough investigation by the Police and university’s governing council.

It added that the students, contrary to the allegations in the petition that they were being subjected to harassment and intimidation, have been enjoying support from the university’s management which has fostered conducive learning space and academic excellence.

The letter reads in part “We wish to state, unequivocally and without prejudice, that the allegations contained in the said petition neither reflect the lived realities within our university nor the collective sentiment of the student population.

“As the local student union with firsthand experience of institutional engagements and administrative developments, we find the petition to be highly misleading, politically coloured, and grossly unrepresentative of actual events and dynamics within FUOYE.

“It is apparent that the current leadership of NANS has, regrettably, allowed itself to be entangled in external manipulation, resulting in dissemination of unfounded accusations targeting Professor Fasina and Chairman of the Governing Council, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba We view this as a deliberate attempt to malign the leadership of our great institution and to destabilise ongoing progress achieved under their stewardship.

“In setting the record straight, we wish to highlight the following key clarifications: The accusation involving Engr. Folashade Adebayo and the Vice-Chancellor has been thoroughly investigated by both the Nigeria Police and a duly constituted panel of the Governing Council. In both cases, Prof. Fasina was exonerated of all allegations. As student representatives, we have reviewed the reports and affirm our confidence in the integrity and transparency of the investigative processes.

“Financial Administration: Under Prof. Fasina’s leadership, the university has witnessed commendable improvements in academic expansion, infrastructure development, staff welfare, and campus security. There exist no credible audit reports or findings suggesting financial impropriety on the part of the administration.

Student Welfare and Union Engagement: At no point have members of Students’ Union been subjected to harassment or intimidation by the university. On the contrary, we have enjoyed collaboration and institutional support, all in the interest of student advancement and harmonious governance.

    “In light of the foregoing, we respectfully request that the Honourable Minister to kindly” disregard the petition submitted by the NANS leadership, as it is devoid of credibility, factual merit, and legitimate representation; Recognise the Students’ Union Government of FUOYE as the authentic and democratically elected voice of the student body within the institution;

“Uphold the findings of the Governing Council’s investigative panel as the legitimate basis for decision-making on all matters referenced; Safeguard our university from unwarranted political interference, external manipulation, and media sensationalism aimed at undermining its leadership and institutional integrity.

“As student leaders committed to justice, transparency, and the welfare of our constituents, we shall not stand idly by while misinformation is weaponised to discredit the progress of our university. We choose the path of truth, accountability, and stability in the best interest of FUOYE and the Nigerian educational sector at large”, it added.

The President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Com. Olusola Ladoja has affirmed he remained the only legitimate, and globally recognised leader of the body.

He maintained that there is no factional leadership in NANS, saying the purported claim of a parallel NANS President as laughable and a pitiable display of imposture.

A statement by Ladoja noted that Atiku, who did not participated in the last convention that ushered in new leadership of the organisation continued parading himself as President.

  • NANS, NAOSS hail Abiodun over progress on Gateway International Airport

NANS, NAOSS hail Abiodun over progress on Gateway International Airport

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and the National Association of Ogun State Students (NAOSS) have lauded Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, for his unwavering commitment toward making the Gateway International Airport in Iperu-Remo fully operational.

In a joint statement signed by NANS Ogun Chairman, Gabriel Abiola, and NAOSS National President, Thomas Kehinde, the student bodies said the airport’s development is a major step toward enhancing the state’s socio-economic growth and international connectivity.

They described the recent flight checks conducted by the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) as a positive signal that the airport is nearing commercial takeoff.

Commending the quality of work on-site, the student leaders referenced remarks by the head of the NAMA team, Engr. Miri Selzing, who praised the runway length, terminal structure, and overall standards of the facility—affirming the impact of Governor Abiodun’s administration on the project.

The statement added that though the incumbent administration in the state has transformed the narrative of governance in the state, particularly in major critical sectors, the 97 per cent completion of the airport within a short period of time has further written Abiodun-led administration in gold.

According to them, the governor, through his exemplary leadership, has entrenched democratic values which has helped in the delivery of good governance to the people of Ogun State.

While noting that the construction of Gateway International Airport Airport is an icing on the cake of enviable achievements of the current administration in the state, the statement said that “successes recorded in housing, infrastructure development, education, health, agriculture, security, sports and youths development, has put Governor Abiodun ahead of his predecessor in terms of performance and delivery of real dividends of democracy.”

It added: “NANS in Ogun and NAOSS commend Governor Abiodun-led administration in the state for its unrelenting efforts in ensuring that the Gateway International Airport becomes operational. The flight checks carried out on Monday by the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) on Monday, towards validation for the commencement of commercial flight, is a positive indication that the airport will soon be given approval.

“When eventually stamped by NAMA, the airport will not only operate as an agro-cargo airport, it will also be used for commercial flights for both local international passengers. This will further open Ogun to the international market and air traffic, which in turn will give a boon to the socioeconomic development of the state.

“Meanwhile, the words of commendation by the head of the NAMA team, Engr. Miri Selzing, on the standard of physical looks of the airport, length of the runway, which he noted is the longest in the country, and the impressive terminal building, are a testimony to the good work done at the airport by the Governor Abiodun’s administration. It is also pleasing to hear the team lead say that the airport’s runway is long and large enough to accommodate any type of aircraft and that it will handle diversions from Lagos, Ibadan, and Ilorin airports.

“While we salute the governor for his giant strides in all the major sectors of the economy in the state, we urge him not to relent in his efforts to transform Ogun and leave enduring indelible marks in the state.

“NANS and NAOSS will continue to rally support for his administration in its quest to build a prosperous state by making Ogun the number one destination of choice for investors within the country and abroad.”
