NANS to Fed Govt: sanction banks, institutions tampering with Student Loan

    • asks EFCC, ICPC to probe handlers

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immediately sanction banks and school officials found culpable of shortchanging students on the National Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) initiative.

NANS also urged the President to set up monitoring system to ensure probity, transparency, efficiency and success of the NELFUND.

Addressing newsmen in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, on Thursday, in reaction to the revelation that the scheme is now fraught with corrupt practices, with some institutions allegedly diverting the funds to private purses, NANS National Vice President, Inter-Campus and Gender Affairs, Comrade Akinbodunse Felicia, urged the President to move fast and arrest the unfolding ugly situation.

She revealed that at the zonal level, NANS had chosen April 24 to organise mass protests across the Southwest zone to call the President’s attention to the clandestine moves by some people to divert funds meant for student loans into private accounts.

While urging National Orientation Agency of Nigeria (NOA) and NELFUND to disclose the identity of individuals or higher institutions that were dipping hands into the loan facility meant for students as well as the identity of conniving banks, Akinbodunse called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to beam their searchlights on institutions and banks suspected to be involved in the corrupt practices.

She said: “We want to raise the alarm and call the attention of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the sharp and unethical practices of some tertiary institutions in the disbursement of the Federal Government Student Loan Fund.

“This initiative launched by the president was welcomed by all and sundry, particularly we at NANS, as we realised the benefits inherent in the policy for the teeming populace of the Nigerian students.

“To us, the loan would not only bring succour to the parents who struggle to pay tuition fees and other expenses of their wards, it would equally create an avenue for indigent students to achieve their academic goals without financial encumbrance.

“In fact, the establishment of NELFUND remains one the best initiatives of the incumbent administration in the country.

“However, it came to the leadership of NANS as a rude shock that the beautiful and laudable scheme is now fraught with corrupt practices as some institutions have begun to divert the funds allocated to students in their schools to private purses.

“According to recent investigations into the disbursement of the Federal Government Student Loan Fund by National Orientation Agency of Nigeria (NOA), the scheme is being tampered with by officials saddled with the responsibility of disbursing the loans to eligible students.”

“We call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to set up a monitoring system to ensure that the funds meant for the student loans get to the targeted beneficiaries. As his baby, NELFUND must not be allowed to be rubbished by officials in charge of loan disbursement in higher institutions. Mr. President must not hesitate to wield the big stick on any higher institution found tampering with loans meant to help the students.

“Furthermore, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Independent Corrupt Practices Commission and other Related Offences (ICPC) should be directed to beam their searchlight on institutions suspected to be involved in the corrupt practices.

“Also, banks found to be conniving with officials of higher institutions to shortchange students, should be adequately sanctioned to serve as deterrent to others.

“Meanwhile, we want to urge NOA and NELFUND to disclose the identity of individuals or higher institutions that are dipping their hands into loans meant for the students. Also, the identity of the banks conniving with these identified officials should also be exposed.”

NANS resolves leadership crisis as factional leader, Isah steps down

The factional leader of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade Atiku Isah has agreed to work with the NANS president, Comrade Olushola Oladoja in repositioning the association and fighting for the welfare of Nigerian students.

Speaking at a joint news conference on Wednesday in Abuja, Isah who endorsed Comrade Oladoja as the authentic President of NANS, expressed willingness to join forces with him to chart a new path for the progress of NANS.

He said there was no need to divide NANS with a protracted leadership crisis, while the interest and welfare of students that should be protected suffered for it.

He stated: “Comrade Olusola Oladoja and I met and we have agreed that NANS should become one. He is the authentic NANS President. No more division in NANS, we are now one.”

NANS President Ladoja noted that after a crucial meeting with Abubakar Isah “who has been parading himself as factional NANS President has agreed to collapse his structure into my own for us to work together in taking the Association to the next level”.

He said it was a remarkable day, noting that during his campaign one of the things he promised to do was unification of NANS that was hitherto factionalised.

Oladoja said he had earlier noted that the crisis was an internal issue and that it was a good thing that everybody now has agreed to work together in the interest of Nigerian students.

He said: “We disagree to agree. NANS leadership under me will be united to seriously advocate, especially for the interest, yearning and aspirations of Nigerian students.

“We now have a formidable force in the country. We don’t have a divided house any longer. We are together, we are united and we will fight for the rights and privileges of the Nigerian students.

“I promised during my campaign that when I come in I will unite NANS. There were factions before. After my emergence as NANS President during the convention, I unfortunately started seeing press releases from my good friend Atiku Abubakar Isah parading himself as NANS President.

“I put a call to him and we were supposed to meet during the Sallah but for other engagements the meeting did not hold. By the special grace of God we met yesterday and we have resolved all the differences. He has agreed that he will work with me to reposition NANS and fight for the welfare of Nigerian students.

“I can tell you that NANS can now speak with one voice. Nigerian students have been subjected to all manner of difficult situations that the Association cannot afford to look away. So, no more factions in NANS.”

NANS seeks end to FUOYE crisis, urges warring parties to embrace peace

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called on warring groups and stakeholders at the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) to end the crisis engulfing the university in the best interest of the students.

The body appealed to the leadership of the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) FUOYE branch to end every form of acrimony and support the institution’s management in ensuring uninterrupted academic activities on the campus.

The university has been embroiled in crisis in the last few months following the allegations of sexual harassment levelled against the vice chancellor, Professor Abayomi Fasina, by a member of SSANU in the institution, Mrs Folasade Adebayo.

Although the Governing Council exonerated the VC following the report of the investigative panel, the staff union continued its protest against the management.

Amid the crisis, the governing council on Monday approved a six-month annual and research leave for Professor Fasina and appointed one the deputy vice chancellors, Professor Olubunmi Shittu as acting vice chancellor.

Addressing journalists in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti state capital, on Wednesday, the National Vice President of NANS, Sileola Akinbodunse, said the students’ body was worried about the growing trend in the university, which she said might have negative effects on the students if not addressed.

She explained that students as one of the stakeholders in the institution should not dragged into the needless controversies and power play, adding that education pursuit of the over 50,000 students should not be made to suffer.

According to her, “NANS further learnt that Mrs Adebayo, being a member of SSANU, has been using the Association to fight her battle at the expense of the students of the institution, a situation which has become a serious concern to the student body. We cannot sit idly and watch students be used as cannon fodder by these warring parties.

“While NANS cannot stop SSANU FUOYE Branch from agitating for the cause of its members, we decry and condemn the activities of the Branch Chairman, Mr. Benjamin Faleye, as inimical to the peace and tranquility hitherto enjoyed on the campus of FUOYE.

“However, after exhaustive investigation by the NANS on the happenings in the university, we can say unequivocally that the brouhaha in FUOYE is pure internal politics at play. It is also a ploy to discredit the outgoing VC by the principal dramatis persona in the crisis, to warm their way into the heart of the incoming VC.

“This is no doubt an act of calling a dog a bad name to hang it! We condemn this act as NANS leaders, and we want peace to return to FUOYE.

“We hereby call on all the warring parties in the university to sheathe their swords, especially when the Governing Council of the institution has investigated the matter and cleared the VC of the allegation leveled against him.

“We cannot afford to turn a blind eye to issues in FUOYE, knowing fully well that students will be at the receiving end. Where two elephants fight, we all know that it is the grass that suffers. This is what we stand against in FUOYE and will not allow such to happen.”

Akinbodunse appealed to the national leadership of SSANU to rein in the branch chairman in FUOYE, Benjamin Faleye to consider the recent lifting of his suspension by the governing as a way for resolving all lingering issues in the interest of the students.

  • ‘Seyi Tinubu not behind alleged abduction of self-acclaimed NANS President’

‘Seyi Tinubu not behind alleged abduction of self-acclaimed NANS President’

A group, Friends of Seyi Tinubu (FOST), has said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s son, Seyi, never at any point ordered thugs to abduct and brutalise one Comrade Atiku Abubakar Isah, who claims to be President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).

The group described allegations against Seyi Tinubu as reckless, saying it’s an attempt to tarnish the good reputation of the President’s son.

A statement by the President of the group, Com. Adejorin Tai Manuel, condemned the publication dated April 16, 2025, alleging Seyi Tinubu was behind the attack on Atiku..

The statement reads: “Mr. Seyi Tinubu is a young, focused, and accomplished individual who has no time, business, or interest in the politics of NANS, let alone stooping so low as to orchestrate violence against someone who is clearly unknown to him.

“The claim that Seyi Tinubu even recognises or acknowledges Comrade Atiku as a threat or enemy is laughable and clearly fabricated. Seyi Tinubu is not a member of NANS, not a patron, nor is he involved in any student political process. He remains committed to his personal and national development engagements, which are far beyond the narrow scope of campus politics.

“It is important to clarify that Comrade Atiku Abubakar Isah does not represent Nigerian students. His claims of being elected at the so-called “125th NANS Convention” are factually incorrect and devoid of logic. NANS, which was founded in 1980, has not held up to 125 conventions in its history. Atiku did not attend the last constitutionally recognized NANS convention, nor did he participate in any legitimate electoral process.

“There is no record of any election conducted that produced him. He has no known executive council, no vice president, no secretary-general, no financial secretary, or any EXCO member to support his claims. He merely woke up, declared himself president, and began parading the title across media platforms without mandate or legitimacy.

“One wonders who Atiku represents, where his mandate originated from, and how the medium failed to ask the most basic questions about his legitimacy before giving him a platform to spread lies.

“The so-called “election” that produced him remains invisible, with no evidence of senator participation or institutional backing. He has been rejected by the mainstream NANS community, and the public deserves to know that the association operates with structure and order not propaganda.

“Dragging the name of Seyi Tinubu into this charade is a calculated smear campaign designed to attract public sympathy and give credibility to a failed quest for recognition.

“But Nigerians are wiser than that. Seyi Tinubu has no business with impostors. His focus remains on uplifting youth, driving entrepreneurship, and contributing meaningfully to the nation’s development—not getting entangled in student leadership dramas. It is therefore absurd and insulting that a man of his pedigree would be linked to such crude behavior.”

Aiyedatiwa’s Easter retreat new era for student-government collaboration – NANS

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) said invitation of students leaders across Ondo State by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to an Easter Retreat from April 17- 20 will deepen student-government collaboration.

The student body lauded the Governor for initiating an exceptional and purpose-driven Easter retreat, dinner and interactive session.

NANS described the invitation, extended to leadership of Student Union Governments across all higher institutions in Ondo State, as a strategic, far-sighted gesture that speaks volumes of the Governor’s progressive disposition, his commitment to participatory governance, and his recognition of the strategic role student leaders play in state development.

A statement by the Chairman, NANS JCC Ondo Axis, Com. Tobiloba Joshua said Aiyedatiwa has chosen dialogue, inclusion and institutional collaboration in an era where students voices are often relegated to the background.

According to the statement, the Governor has once again demonstrated that leadership is not about isolation, but integration by creating space for students leaders to interact directly with the highest office in the state.

According to him: “This retreat transcends the perfunctory. It is a forward-thinking convergence designed to promote intellectual exchange, deepen policy understanding, and foster a culture of mutual respect between student leaders and the government.

“The opportunity to reflect on leadership, responsibility, and the essence of service within the context of the Easter season adds both spiritual depth and moral clarity to the gathering.

“We equally commend the Senior Special Assistant on Student Affairs, Hon. Kevin Solomon Olaolu, for his relentless commitment to bridging the gap between government and the student community.

“His coordination of this initiative underscores his effectiveness, accessibility, and alignment with the administration’s youth-focused agenda.

“As student leaders, we receive this invitation not only with appreciation but with a sense of duty—to contribute meaningfully to the conversations, to engage constructively, and to reaffirm our commitment to a united and progressive Ondo State.

“We are indeed privileged to have a Governor who sees student leaders not as mere agitators but as partners in progress; not as distant spectators, but as stakeholders in the project of state-building.

“May this engagement mark the beginning of a more robust, strategic, and enduring synergy between the government and the student populace. We applaud this visionary initiative, we honour this noble intent and we align with this transformational agenda.”

NANS hails Akinronbi’s installation as Aare Onakakanfo

The Assistant Secretary General, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Com. Adejuwon Olatunji Emmanuel, has hailed installation of Akin Akinronbi as the Aare Onakakanfo Idomapa of Oke-Ona, Egbaland, an honour at the Palace of the Osile of Oke-Ona, Abeokuta.

The recognition is not only a celebration of Akinronbi’s personal achievements and commitment to societal progress but also a divine call to a higher level of leadership, responsibility, and purposeful service.

A statement by Adejuwon noted that the title of Aare Onakakanfo is historically one of great influence symbolizing strength, strategy, and stewardship entrusted only to those who have shown the courage to lead, the capacity to build, and the wisdom to unify.

He said: “As a new bearer of this revered title, it is important to note that this is far beyond a ceremonial adornment. It is a charge to stand as a protector of values, a bridge between generations, and most importantly, a driver of grassroots development.

“With your antecedents and track record, we are confident that this honour will usher in a new era of opportunity and transformation not just for Egba Oke-Ona and Egbaland, but for Ogun State and Nigeria at large.

“We particularly urge you to channel your strength and renewed influence towards the development of students and the empowerment of the youth, who are the true custodians of our future. In a time when unemployment, educational disillusionment, and social instability plague our young population, your leadership can serve as a beacon of hope.

“We encourage you to initiate programs that will support education, vocational training, mentorship, and job creation for both current students and recent graduates. This singular act will leave an enduring legacy and contribute significantly to national development.

“We implore you to work closely with elders, traditional leaders, and institutional stakeholders to preserve our cultural heritage while advancing inclusive and progressive policies. Your new position provides a platform to harmonize traditional leadership with modern developmental frameworks, giving room for both cultural preservation and societal advancement.

“Indeed, your elevation is a benefit not only to your personal legacy, but to the entire Egba nation. It brings about renewed hope for the youth, increased attention to community issues, and a greater possibility for investment in human capital. The people will benefit from your visionary leadership, your philanthropic initiatives, and the unity that your influence can foster.

“Leadership is a divine calling and a position of influence that attracts both admiration and scrutiny. With your new role comes an increase in visibility, expectations, and inevitably, opposition. It is therefore important to move with wisdom, patience, and deep reflection in all matters.

“You must now understand that every decision you make, every word you utter, and every action you take will be weighed, analyzed, and interpreted by many both within and beyond your community. As such, you must lead with emotional intelligence, sound judgment, and clarity of purpose. The higher one rises, the more strategic and discerning one must become.

“Be mindful that not everyone will celebrate your success. There will be individuals or forces that may seek your downfall not because of your shortcomings, but because of envy or political interest. Hence, we urge you to take things calmly, avoid being reactionary, and seek wise counsel before responding to issues. Every action must be guided by maturity, vision, and long-term impact.

“True leadership lies not in how many battles you fight, but in how many conflicts you prevent through wisdom and tact. Be a father to the people, a guide to the youths, and a reconciler in moments of tension.

“May your journey as Aare Onakakanfo Idomapa be marked by grace, strength, and a legacy that generations will remember.

“Once again, we celebrate your conferment and pray that your reign as Aare Onakakanfo Idomapa will be marked by peace, progress, and prosperity. Congratulations.”

NANS cautions SSANU on plan to disrupt activities at FUOYE

The leadership of National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone, has cautioned Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) over its plan to disrupt academic and non-academic activities at the Federal University of Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Ekiti State.

The union, led by Comrade Owolewa Taiwo, was quoted in a statement as saying that it would resist any attempt by SSANU to plunge the institution into crisis.

The leadership said the students’ body had resolved to do everything possible within the ambit of law to protect the interest of students of the institution.

The statement said: “As the authentic and legitimate voice of Nigerian students across the Southwest, we state without ambiguity that we will not fold our arms and watch any individual or group—whether union or non-union—plunge our institution into chaos or truncate the academic calendar that affects the future of over 50,000 students at FUOYE.

‘‘We are aware of the veiled threats by SSANU to mobilise its members across 26 universities in the Western Zone for an industrial action or protest at FUOYE.

“This is not a threat; this is a declaration of readiness to protect the academic future of Nigerian students.

“We remind SSANU that the last time they embarked on a disruptive protest and shut down operations on FUOYE campus, we suffered a painful and irreparable loss—a promising student died due to lack of access to emergency medical care after the University Health Centre was shut down by their action.

‘’We say never again. FUOYE or any of our institutions in the Southwest is not a battleground for political vendettas or union showdowns. Any attempt to use our campus to settle scores or create chaos will be met with legal, peaceful but unshakable resistance from the student body.

“We urge stakeholders to intervene,  to ensure the peace and stability of FUOYE and other institutions are not compromised. We are committed to dialogue, justice and equity, but we will not allow the future of Nigerian students to be jeopardised by anyone hiding under the guise of unionism.

“We call on SSANU to pursue their grievances through the proper legal and administrative channels, rather than resorting to disruptive actions that may lead to further crisis.’’

NANS commends Ondo Police Commissioner over protest

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Council, (JCC), Ondo State Axis has commended Commissioner of Police Wilfred Afolabi for his professional, fatherly and calm disposition during recent peaceful protest by Akoko Youth Leaders and Ondo Axis of NANS in response to the detention and legal action initiated against Comrade Akeju Blessing James and other youth leaders by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice.

The student body hailed the Police Commissioner for display of solidarity, leadership maturity and institutional engagement during the struggle.

Speaking during a courtesy visit to the Police Commissioner in his office, the Chairman, NANS JCC, Ondo State Axis, Com. Tobiloba Joshua said despite the charged atmosphere that characterised the protest, Afolabi remained neutral, composed and tactful in his interventions.

According to him, the Police boss served as a voice of reason and an advocate for peace, ensuring that the constitutional rights of protesters were not violated while also safeguarding public peace and order.

Afolabi lauded NANS JCC leadership for conducting a protest that was not only peaceful but also devoid of violence, vandalism, extortion, or any form of public disturbance.

He noted that such maturity and discipline are rare in youth-led movements and praised the association for setting a commendable standard.

Touching on broader security concerns within Ondo State, Afolabi highlighted challenges his command faces, particularly shortage of manpower, lack of technical support equipment like drones and tracking devices, and urgent need for more patrol vehicles to improve surveillance and crime-fighting capabilities.

He passionately appealed for support from both governmental and non-governmental stakeholders to equip the command for more efficient operations.

He also encouraged the student body and the youth constituency to collaborate with the police by reporting suspicious behaviours, emphasizing that community policing is only effective when trust and communication are mutual.

In a moment of historic importance, Afolabi, in response to a request made by the delegation, approved the appointment of Com. Akeju Blessing James as the Youth and Students Liaison Officer/Ambassador to the Ondo State Police Command.

This strategic appointment is aimed at deepening the synergy between the Nigerian Police Force and the student/youth community in Ondo State, fostering improved communication, coordination, and conflict resolution mechanisms.

NANS issues 72-hour ultimatum to Ondo Govt over detained students

    …threatens mass protest

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has issued a 72-hour ultimatum to the Ondo state government, demanding the release of detained student activists allegedly imprisoned through the office of the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barr. Kayode Ajulo.

In a statement released by NANS President, Comrade Olushola Oladoja, the student body accused Ajulo of weaponising legal powers to silence student voices and called on Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to intervene immediately.

NANS specifically demanded the unconditional release of Comrade Blessing Akeju and others allegedly held on politically motivated and trumped-up charges at the Olokuta Correctional Facility.

Reaffirming its commitment to defending student rights, NANS warned that failure to meet the demands within the stipulated timeframe would trigger a nationwide mass action, starting with a protest tagged #OccupyOndoGovernmentHouse.

“This is not a threat, but a declaration of intent, backed by the collective will of Nigerian students. We will not fold our arms while our comrades are persecuted for advocating better governance. An injury to one is an injury to all,” the statement read.

The statement reads, “The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), under the Presidency of Comrade Olushola Oladoja, express deep shock and strong condemnation over the recent oppressive actions by the Ondo State Attorney General, Barr. Kayode Ajulo, particularly in the arbitrary incarceration of Comrade Blessing Akeju and other young Nigerians who have now been unjustly remanded at the Olokuta Correctional Facility.

“Barr. Kayode Ajulo, a man who has for years branded himself as a progressive legal practitioner, rights advocate, and voice of the voiceless, should never under any guise be found using state machinery to stiffen civil liberties or trample on the rights of young people, activists, and comrades who have committed no crime other than speaking truth to power and expressing concerns over developments in the state.

“His background as a supposed defender of democratic principles and justice makes this action a descent into authoritarianism, not only hypocritical but utterly disgraceful. It is a shame that he is identified as a perpetrator of this dastardly act of oppression.

“Moreover, we find it disturbing that rather than uphold the rule of law and protect the liberties of citizens, the Attorney General is weaponizing his office to persecute voices of dissent and student leaders. This action is unacceptable, condemnable, and is a dangerous trend that threatens civil liberties and freedom of expression in Ondo State and Nigeria at large.

“The implications of this oppression arethat  when the Chief Law Officer of a state engages in actions that clearly undermine justice, it sends a dangerous signal to the public that the law is a tool for oppression, not justice.

“The continued detention of activists is a direct assault on the freedom of expression and assembly, both of which are constitutionally guaranteed.

“The silence of the Ondo State Government on this matter is complicit. We must not and will not allow this to stand.”

Aiyedatiwa commended the students for their peaceful and well-organized protest, acknowledging their right to demand better conditions for their education.

A statement by NANS JCC Ondo State Axis chairman, Com. According to him: “The Governor directed the Ministry of Infrastructure to commence the rehabilitation of internal roads within tertiary institutions. Although, designs for roads leading to campuses, including Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, have already been completed.

“The government has engaged relevant intervention agencies to expedite work on abandoned hostel projects to improve student accommodation across institutions.

“The Governor instructed the management of the former Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo (now Ondo State University of Agriculture and Agribusiness) to commence preparations for the convocation ceremony of students who graduated over the past ten sessions.

“The Governor assured students that security agencies are working collaboratively to maintain peace and safety in the state, including within school environments.

“Discussions also covered the renovation of the NYSC camp in Ikare-Akoko, land disputes at the Federal College of Agriculture, Akure, and the provision of buses for Student Union Governments.

“One of the key concerns raised by students was the lack of adequate transportation facilities. The Governor assured that this issue would be addressed, emphasizing that discussions are ongoing to establish a sustainable and effective transportation system for students across the state.”

He expressed appreciation for the prompt response of the Governor commitment to finding solutions to their concerns.

He however said that there will be closely monitoring on how these promises is being implemented to ensure they translate into tangible improvements for students.
