NASARAWA VS ENYIMBA Anything can happen, says Alphonsus Dike

As soccer fans hit the Rock City of Abeokuta today for the clash between Nasarawa United and Enyimba in the quarter-final of this year’s FA Cup, Coach of the Lafia-based side Alphonsus Dike says anything can happen.

Football, according to the former U-17 coach, is pregnant and could produce any result. He, however, told SportingLife in a telephone chat Tuesday that the Solid Miners have done all they need to do ahead of today’s clash.

“Football is like tomorrow, it is pregnant and anything can happen. On our part we have done what we ought to do and we are hoping for the best,” he enthused

The former Enyimba coach, dismissed submissions in some quarters that being former handler of the People’s Elephants will give his side added advantage.

“You don’t dwell on the past at a time like this. What we have decided to do is prepare for the match and we will go out and play our game,” he said

Most soccer fans have described the battle of Abeokuta as a major attraction judging by the fighting spirit associated with the contending teams.

Those who spoke with SportingLife Tuesday however declined to predict a score, preferring instead to adopt the wait and see posture.

  • Tribunal chides Nasarawa for N80m tax debt

The Tax Appeal Tribunal, sitting in Jos, the Plateau State capital, has frowned at the attitude of the Nasarawa State Government on the accumulated tax it owed the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).

The Chairman of the North Central zone of the tribunal, Abraham Ndana Yisa, spoke yesterday at the sitting of the tribunal in Jos.

Three agencies of the state government – the Nasarawa State University, the Nasarawa State Tourism Corporation and Nasarawa State Investment and the Nasarawa State Property Company Limited – have allegedly defaulted in remitting N80 million tax, excluding interest and penalties, to the Federal Government. The FIRS had charged the defaulting agencies before the North Central zone of the tribunal, sitting in Jos.

When the three agencies appeared before the tribunal yesterday for the fourth time, they were said to have shown no commitment to paying their debts.

Counsel to the FIRS, Nasiru Ahmed, urged the tribunal to invoke Section 34 of Value Added Tax (VAT) Law, Cap. 6, Law of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, to compel the defaulting agencies to pay the principal sum, the accumulated interests and the penalties.

ENYIMBA VS NASARAWA UTD Elephants charged to go for victory

Abia State governor, Theodore Ahamefula Orji, has tasked Enyimba of Aba to go all out for a win today against Nasarawa United in the quarter final of the Federation Cup at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta.

The People’s Elephant lifted the trophy in 2005 and 2009 but have found a third one difficult to come by despite playing in two of the last three finals. They were beaten in the 2010 final by a determined Kaduna United on penalties, while Heartland pipped them to the crown in 2011 in Lagos.

The governor enjoined them not to be complacenct or distracted as they entertain Nasarawa United in Abeokuta today.

Speaking through the chairman of the Aba Millionaires, Felix Anyansi Agwu, Dr. Orji urged the team to get to the pitch and get the job done.

He assured them of support which he said he displayed by paying 50 percent of their signing-on fees even before the start of the current Globacom Premier League.

“I want to assure you that you have my support and blessings to beat Nasarawa United tomorrow (today).

“We are a club with a standard and tradition. This I will like you to maintain as you step out against your opponents.

“You have been doing very well in recent times and I will like you to maintain that.

“The state is desirous of a trophy. It has been a while since we won a title and your performance this season has rekindled hope in me and the good people of the state that the glory days are back.

“Go and match your opponent grit for grit and battle for battle. There shouldn’t be complacency. We must bring this cup back to Abia State to celebrate the feat together,” Orji said.

Speaking for himself, the chairman of Enyimba, Felix Anyansi Agwu, said the People’s Elephant should not handle Nasarawa United with kids’ gloves.

He stressed that the Lafia side were good and that the draw the got against Enyimba in Lafia barely two weeks ago would make them extra motivated to seek revenge in Abeokuta.

Anyansi also said that focus should be the players’ and the coaches’ watchword as they seek a place in the last four.

Federation Cup: ‘Nasarawa need S/final ticket more than Enyimba’

Nasarawa United captain Baba Idris says their qualification for the semi final of the ongoing Federation Cup at the expense of Enyimba is not an imposible mission.

The Miners will face the People’s Elephnants in a quarter final clash at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta on Wednesday.

Enyimba forced Nasarawa United to a goalless draw in a week 22 Globacom Premier League game at the Lafia Township Stadium, Lafia.

The former Keffi United star told SportingLife he and his team-mates do not have revenge against Enyimba on their minds.

He added that the only way to reward their teaming supporters this season is by winning the Federation Cup.

“We are preparing well for the game. There is ‘no shaking’ and there is no cause for alarm. We need the match more than Enyimba,” Idris said.

“Our position on the league table is not impressive for now and the only chance left for us to make our people happy is by winning the Federation Cup. We are in for it and we are very focused.

“We played a 1-1 draw against Enyimba in our last league game in Lafia. We are not thinking about revenge, but we want to win. People may call it revenge but what is important to us is to win the match and advance to the semi final stage.”

  • Enyimba vow to stroll past Nasarawa

Enyimba vow to stroll past Nasarawa

Enyimba of Aba have vowed to continue their impressive run at this year’s Federation Cup as they leave for Abeokuta today ahead of their Wednesday’s quarter final clash with Nasarawa United at the MKO Abiola Stadium.

The Peoples Elephant had an indifferent first stanza but their acquisition of experienced league players have brought back the vibe in the team and have been unbeaten in both the league and cup game since the start of the second stanza.

The Aba Millionaires outclassed 3SC, who have excelled in the same competition a record 8 times in the past, 3-1 last Wednesday at Abuja and have a date with Nasarawa United that stopped Sunshine Stars 1-0 at Lokoja in the Round of 16.

The head Coach of the Aba side, Salisu Yusuf has told SportingLife that they have opted to arrive Abeokuta well ahead of the tie to allow them to prepare well enough for the Lafia side and also dislodge them when the game comes up on Wednesday.

He added that Enyimba stayed behind at Abuja after their defeat of 3SC and only leaving the city today for Abeokuta.

“We are going to do our best to beat them. We know they are not going to be easy prey but with the level of our preparation and efforts we have put into this competition and the league we expect to beat them.

“We already know them having played against them during Week 22 and held them to. 1-1 draw in Lafia. We hope to repeat it again on a neutral ground. We are leaving for Abeokuta from Abuja today after our win over 3SC. I have the full confidence in my boys that we shall excel at the end of the day,” Yusuf, a former Coach of the Super Eagles, disclosed.

  • Nasarawa ready to receive Jonathan – Al-makura

Governor Umaru Al-Makura of Nasarawa State said on Tuesday that all was set to receive President Goodluck Jonathan in the state on July 29.

The governor stated this when he led other top government officials to inspect the new Federal High Court complex that would be inaugurated along other projects in the state by the president.

Al-Makura also inspected the LGEA Primary School, Bukan Sidi, also called Tanko Al-Makura (TA’AL) Model School; the Lafia East Road project connecting Lafia East Project Quarter and Government House Bye-pass.

Al-Makura said the model school that was a two-storey building was a new concept designed by his administration to improve the standard of education in the state.

He also appreciated the level of work on the project as most of the critical areas were nearing completion.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the governor also inspected a helipad under construction at the Government House where the president would be received, and expressed satisfaction with the level of work at the site.

Meanwhile Lafia, the state capital, is wearing a new look as buildings along Shendam Road, leading to the Government House have been painted.

Other renovated structures included Lafia City Hall and Hotel, and the Presidential Lodge.

  • Nasarawa killings: Commission embargoes security memoranda

Nasarawa killings: Commission embargoes security memoranda

Lawyers won’t have access to security memoranda submitted to the panel investigating the killings of security personnel in Nasarawa State, it was learnt yesterday.

The affected memoranda, according to the Chairman of the Commission, Justice Fola Gbadeyan (rtd), include submissions made to the panel by the Nasarawa State Government, the Nasarawa State Commands of the Nigeria Police Force and the State Security Service (SSS).

He, however, ordered that lawyers be allowed access to other submissions by individuals, communities, groups and associations.

Justice Gbadeyan said the Commission decided to keep the security memoranda due to their implications for the state.

Plea by lawyers to be given the documents to enable them prepare their defences were rejected.

The Commission boss said the lawyers representing various stakeholders would only be permitted to read the briefs at a later date.

Justice Gbadeyan had during the inaugural sitting of the panel last week granted request made by lawyers to be given copies of all petitions submitted to the Commission to enable them prepare appropriately for cross examination of witnesses where necessary.

The panel was setup by Governor Tanko al-Makura following the killing of over 50 policemen and operatives of the SSS allegedly in an ambush by members of the Ombatse Militia Group in Alakyo village, on May 7, 2013.

Counsel representing Eggon Community of Barkin Abdullahi in Nasarawa State, Ovey John, told the panel that those whose names were mentioned in the security documents have a right to be informed of such allegations.

John said the documents would also enable lawyers to cross examine the presenters of the memoranda.

He said: “Anybody who is accused, who is mentioned, has the right to be informed of such allegations against him, he has a right to be given enough time, adequate enough to prepare to defend himself.

“Going by this provision of the Constitution, if at all these memoranda have not been circulated and by the time they are just brought in for presentation, it would really take us unawares. It will spring surprises.

“It is really possible that some people’s names are mentioned and they have not been given enough time to prepare because the presenters of the memoranda must be cross examined using what they have said in those memoranda.

“So, it is very good that the memoranda be circulated. Let there be reasonable time enough for the lawyers to go through so that they will be able to prepare and ask questions from the presenters.”

In his response, Justice Gbadeyan said: “We shall at the appropriate time allow you to go through the security memoranda but we will not circulate the security memoranda.”

Meanwhile, the Commission would begin hearing on the 18 other submissions before it today.

Curiously, there were no representatives nor counsels for the state government and the SSS when their submissions were announced yesterday.

The Police Command was, however, represented by Superintendent Miadawa Saleh Adam.

Adam applied to withdraw his earlier memoranda, saying an amended copy has been filed before the panel.

He said the police intend to call two witnesses.

The Commission adjourned the submissions of the Police, SSS and the State Government to August 6, 14 and 15 respectively, for hearing.

The Judicial Commission of Inquiry into the recent killings of members of the Nigerian Security Forces (Nigeria Police and the Department of State Services), destruction and confiscation of security personnel’s operational vehicles and weapons in Alakyo Village of Lafia Local Government Area and Matters connected therewith has so far received 21 memoranda.

     •Seek three points against Enyimba

Nasarawa United host Enyimba today in one of the match day 22 ties, of the Nigeria Professional Premier league.

The Solid Miners are fresh from a 4-0 demolition of City of David, in the round of 32 of FA Cup will be hoping to consolidate by enjoying another victory against visiting two time champions’ league heroes Enyimba.

On paper, the Aba landlords who occupy the 4th place on the log with 34 points in 21 matches, should have the upper hand against their opponents who are 10 places down the ladder with 28 points in 21 matches. But with Alphosus Dike tutored Nasarawa charged and boosted after their victory over COD, it may not be a tea party for the visitors. Dike who incidentally handled Enyimba in the past may want to rely on some of the privileged information he has about the side, though this may not serve as

Magic wand as a lot of water has passed under the bridge since he coached the side over six years ago.

The former U-17 coach, who was recently charged by the clubs management to win more matches, had shortly after the victory over COD, cautioned his boys not to rest on their oars, but maintain the tempo, adding however, that the team will “take the matches one at a time to maintain maximum concentration”

Nasarawa Utd to sign five players

Nasarawa United chairman, Isaac Danladi has told SportingLife that the club will strengthen the squad with additional five players before the commencement of the second stanza of the Globacom Premier League.

The Lafia-based side concluded the first round of the season on 8th position with 28 points.

Danladi said that the negotiation has started with the players and their respective clubs with the hope of concluding their deals before the week runs out.

He revealed that the management will reinforce the team with one goalkeeper, two strikers and two defenders.

He added that the players’ names would be made public next week.

“We have identified the areas we think we need adjustment. We have spotted the players during the first round campaign and we’ve started negotiation with their respective clubs. The players have shown interest in the club and they have promised to play for us. Two of them have started training with us while we are expecting the remaining three players on Tuesday (today) and Wednesday,” Danladi told SportingLife.

“I don’t want to mention the names of the players because the deals have not been concluded yet and I don’t want that to affect the negotiation. We hope to unveil them by next week and I am very sure they will be with us before the commencement of the second stanza.”

Nasarawa vow to pick points in Owerri

Nasarawa United captain, Baba Idris, has emphatically stated that their mission to Owerri is to pick points off Heartland in their Week 18 clash at the Dan Anyiam Stadium.

Idris, who spoke to supersport.com, is of the opinion that given fair officiating, he is sure that the team will pick at least a point off their hosts.

“We are not going for a jamboree in Owerri, we are going there for business and we want to grab points there,” he stated.

“The team has resolved to go all out to get the maximum points at stake. If the officiating is fair, then I am sure we can do that. Heartland are formidable at home, but I’m confident I and my teammates can do the business there.”

The 20-year-old centre-back also called on the League Management Company (LMC) to check the excesses of fans as security is a necessary precursor for fairness and entertainment.

“I must commend the LMC for what they are doing, teams are now picking more away points than previous seasons, but the issue of security has to be addressed so that teams playing away can feel they have an equal opportunity to play and gain points,” said Idris.

The former Plateau United defender also revealed that their ambition is to nick a continental slot at the end of the season, so as to get back to Africa after having a taste of continental football in 2007.

“We want to get back into Africa, that’s our main objective this season. I’ll be satisfied if we can achieve that, our fans surely deserve it. The Nasarawa state government has promised to help us actualise this dream, and we are sure we can do it.” he concluded.

Nasarawa United will confront Heartland in a Week 18 clash on Thursday at the Dan Anyiam Stadium smarting from a 1-0 home win against basement side, Sharks courtesy a Victor Namo strike.

The Solid Miners are occupying the seventh position on the log with 25 points from 17 matches.
