Nasarawa State Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) has urged the Senate to disregard the petition on the certificate forgery against the Senate Minority Leader, Senator George Akume.

The party described the allegation as political blackmail aimed at creating a hollow in the good record of the former Benue State governor. The acting chairman of the party, Mr. Bashir Jabiru, a lawyer, lamented the plot by political foes to tarnish the image of the accomplished politician.

He said the allegation was baseless and lacked substance, urging the Seante to ignore it.

In his words: “We wish to condemn in the strongest term, the petition leveled against the Senate Minority Leader, Senator Gorge Akume by a faceless anti progress politician.

“The allegation is mere balckmail of the Senator. We urge the Senate to disregard it, to protect the good image of the Senator.

    -United get two-month salary
-To get match bonus after today’s tie

The newly refurbished Lafia Township Stadium will play host to the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season’s opener between Nasarawa United and El-Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri today.

The much awaited league kicked off Saturday after series of postponement with Oriental Derby clash between Rangers International of Enugu and Enyimba FC of Aba at the Nnamdi Azikwe stadium.

Nasarawa United and El-Kanemi Warriors gained promotion to the elite division last season after years at the Nigeria National League (NNL). Nasarawa United secured top flight ticket in Group A while El-Kanemi Warriors emerged winners in the Group B which give both teams opportunity to compete in this year’s NPFL after several seasons at the lower cadre.

Nasarawa United defeated El-Kanemi in the Super 4 clash organized for the newly promoted sides in Abuja to know the real Champions of the NNL. In the contest between the two sides in one of the games played during the tourney in Abuja Nasarawa United won by a lone goal.

The host team Nasarawa United received a boost on Friday when the players and officials were given two-month salary ahead of today’s clash with a promise to get their match winning bonus immediately after the game today.

The club chairman, Isaac Danladi, who disclosed this to SportingLife, said the State governor, Umaru Tanko Al-Makura sent words of encouragement to the players through a representative, a onetime State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Sailas Agara ahead of their league opener against El-Kanemi Warriors.

He added that the kits were distributed to the players and officials while they had two-day close camping in Lafia.

“We’ve been putting finishing touches to our preparation ahead of El- Kanemi Warriors’ game. In fact, we’ve motivated the team by paying both the players and technical crew two-month salary on Friday and by the special grace of God they will get their match winning bonus right their inside the stadium immediately after the game on Sunday (today),” Danladi told SportingLife.

“Apart from that, we’ve distributed all their necessary kits needed for the season to them and the governor representative spoke to them on the important of the game. As part of our tradition, we had two-day close camping in Lafia for all the 18 players that will play on Sunday (today). So I can confidently say they are highly motivated for the match. It is a first game of the season and we are going for three points.”

On Thursday, El-Kanemi Warriors paid 50% signing-on fees to its players and technical crew to boost their morale for the clash.

El-Kaanemi Warriors chairman, Zanna Mohammed Mala said his team is in the right frame of mind for the game.

“We are ready and we are confident ahead of the game. The spirit is high and the players are in the right frame of mind for the game. They received 50% of the signing-on fees on Thursday which I believe is the upmost morale booster. It is going to be a tough game but we will give our best,” Mala told SportingLife.

  • Four Nasarawa varsity students killed

Four students of the Nasarawa State University died yesterday during a protest over water scarcity in the institution.

Two of the victims were identified as, Aminu O. Usman, 400-Level Geography and Baba Emmanuel, 300-Level Physics

The victims were among the students who protested against the scarcity of water and power outage in the school.

During the protest, some soldiers allegedly invaded the school and fired shots, an eyewitness said.

Nasarawa State Police Command spokesman Michael Ada confirmed the killing of the students, but denied that they were shot by the police.

He said the commissioner of police was on the scene.

Five students were reportedly shot by a combined team of soldiers and policemen, who moved in to open the barricade by the students of the Nasarawa State University (NSUK), Keffi, who protested yesterday against a water crisis, which had lasted for over one week.

The Deputy Governor’s spokesman, Joseph Danjuma, said they were about to “issue a statement”, on the matter.

The university management has closed down the school, according to Jamil Zakari, spokesman for the university.

He said he heard of the shooting of the students, adding: “I cannot officially confirm this now.”

    Nasarawa ACN mobilises for elections

Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), has begun mobilisation for the forth-coming locxal government elections in the state.

The chairman of the party, Mr. Bashir Jabiru, said the party will achieve victory at the poll because it has credible candidates.

He told our correspondent that the mobilisation of the people of the state is on course, adding that majority are rooting for power shift.

Jabiru, a lawyer, explained that, with the teeming supporters of the party in the 13 local councils and 16 development areas, the party would win gallantly during the elections.

He said the aggrieved party loyalists who have left for the fold have retraced their steps because of the confidence they have in the current party structure under his leadership.

Jabiru added: “If you go to all the local governments now, you will feel our impact there. Not only that, party secretariats are all over the places and the state secretariat would soon be inaugurated by the Minority Leader of the Senate, Senator George Akume. So, we are fully prepared for the local government elections. We are waiting for the Nasarawa State Independent Electoral Commission (NASIEC) to make the announcement.

“We are ready to bring development to the grassroots in the state and that is why we are working tirelessly to improve the living standard of our people. The party have set standard in the Southwest region and we are trying to bring such development to other regions”.

  • Nasarawa steps up growth plan

Nasarawa state Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura’s plan to develop the state is shaping up, with Mararaba emerging as a prime business district under the new land reforms.

The project, known as Nasarawa Geographic Information System (NAGIS), seeks to regularise and computerise all the state land matters with a view to helping the state provide good roads, water, drainage, grazing routes, among others in its towns and cities.

Mr. Sonny Agassi, a Nigerian-Canadian serving as head of the reform programme, said that NAGIS will be a major revenue earner for the state, capable of raking in more than N5b monthly from a land size of about 27,000 square kms.

He said NAGIS, which he refers to as “the baby of my boss, the governor,” was initiated following its success story in the FCT where it is raking in about N1.5b monthly from ground rents and other land charges, from a land size of about 8,000 square kms.

“This is His Excellency’s vision, to replicate Abuja in Nasarawa, and turn around the state as a twin city to Abuja with livable features. We want to create the Maitamas, the Asokoros, and Wuse IIs in Nasarawa, to take Nasarawa close to the 21st Century.

“Our land interlocks with Abuja, at Mararaba in Karu, yet there is no advantage to us other than that much of the working population in Abuja has found a home in Nasarawa. This makes us look like a dormitory.

“His Excellency’s vision is to turn things around, take advantage of the proximity we enjoy with Abuja, and make the area an ambitious and dependable revenue source, to remove our reliance on the federally-generated oil revenue. That is the brain behind the introduction of the reform programme, and by extension, the initiation of the NAGIS project,” Agassi, who is also the state Commissioner for Lands, Survey and Town Planning, said.

However, he said the government is not just looking at income that will accrue to the public purse through this urbanisation process which will last up to 24 months. Government will have to, first, build confidence in property owners through the provision of a 21st-Century habitat with all social infrastructures to compete with, and serve as a twin city to Abuja.

The project, which began nine months ago is centred at Mararaba with a view to turning the area around as business district of the state. Work on the project situated along Keffi-Abuja Road, is nearing completion and it is expected to prop-up the state’s revenue base.

The project, which is being handled by a consortium of firms under Siraj Engineering Consultants, has three components namely Digital Area Mapping (DAM), being handled by Aeroprecisa Limited; Nasarawa Geographic Information Services, undertaken by GIS Transport; and the planning of cadastral districts, being handled by Pragmatic Solutions Consult Nigeria, Envicons, and National Environmental Design Associates. This is meant to engender a detailed planning and development control and will prevent the growth of slums in the state.

The NAGIS project was first awarded to JM Technologies, a firm contracted by the previous government of Aliyu Akwe Doma. The firm was awarded the contract worth about N500m to provide digital aerial mapping which it could not complete two years later.

The present administration unbundled the project, and re-awarded it to Siraj, at the cost of N2.7b to include two more components.

Aeroprecisa Limited, which is providing aerial images, started in May to capture images which are currently being processed for the planned computerisation of the land in use.

GIS Transport, which is providing geographic information services, has seen the state Ministry of Lands, Survey and Town Planning kitted with state-of-the-art facilities. It is now saddled with the responsibility of capturing all land data including titles at the ministry.

The firm has also fetched all mutilated land documents including the Intelligent Sheet from where all of Nasarawa’s land use can be traced, and reproduced them into 21st Century documents with computer backups.

This component has also seen the introduction of a new Certificate of Occupancy (C of O), for an ongoing re-certification which has phased out the old and bogus certification process which was beneficial only to the privileged few.

At the time Al-Makura took over, only about 600 Cs of O had been issued to privileged personalities in 16 years of the state’s existence. But that is being reversed now. This project has seen hundreds with their land titles few months of the introduction of the reforms.

The third component which is the creation of cadastral districts is in its fourth month of implementation. It is being executed by a team of Nigeria’s leading town planners.

Alhaji Ibrahim Usman Jibril, the NAGIS Project Manager, who is also the Senior Special Assistant to the governor, said an inception report on the project has already been produced. According to him, its design shows that about 200 square metres of land is available for the planning which will create 10,000 plots out of six districts at the border with Abuja.

The cadastral districts planning entails the adoption of the General Land Use Budget promoted by UN-Habitat, with an extension to give specifics on arterial roads to connect main roads, residential areas, neighbourhood shopping centres and mini-shopping centres as well as schools and other plans.

The provision of the centre is being handled by A&K Construction Limited as part of the about US$10,625,000.00 (N2.7b) NAGIS project.

A&K Construction has so far completed work on the centre, just as stringing of wires to link the server room and computer units, has also been completed. Furnishing will be the next stage, according to Engr. Khaled Chamoun, the Project Manager, who was part of the team led by Sonny Agassi, to conduct the Minister and his entourage round.

Engr. Khaled, who was accompanied by George Boumaroun, Managing Director of the construction firm, said work started four months ago on an abandoned and old cinema complex. “In four months, we could change all the aspects of the old building and provided what now stands as an architectural masterpiece,” he said.

The team said the quality of the project is remarkable.

Project manager of NAGIS, Jibril said the centre is a hub that will have all of the computers at the state Ministry of Lands, Survey and Town Planning, in Lafia seen right there in Mararaba when the project picks up in a short while to come.

He said the centre will stream revenue collection all over the state, as it will also make for development planning. He explained that “NAGIS, through the aerial images to be recorded in our computers, will be able to locate every single property in the state, every single location or area in the state with the push on the button, to view what is on ground in those places.

“For instance, since resources are scarce, planning is very important for government to locate where there are critical needs. The number of property you have on ground in a particular place suggests its population strength, and by extension, the critical needs of the people.

“Such places will require at least schools, health facilities, markets, roads and so on, depending on the population, as well as resources at the disposal of the government. NAGIS can locate such places to enable planning and development to be realisable, Alhaji Jibril said.

Nasarawa to invest N5b in power supply

Nasarawa State Governor, Umar Tanko Al-makura, on Thursday said the state government would invest N5 billion on the construction of a power substation in Lafia to boost electricity supply.

Al-makura, who disclosed this at a meeting with experts in the power sector in Lafia, said that power for the substation would be drawn from the Enugu-Jos 330KVA line.

He said although the transmission line was close to the state, it had not been serving the state.

“Although the project is huge and capital intensive, my administration will ensure it success,” the News Agency of Nigeria quoted the governor as saying at the meeting.

He said the project would be executed to ensure adequate power supply in the state, adding that his administration would carry out the project in collaboration with some investors conversant with the job.

“This cannot be done without experts, who are conversant with this job. We have secured investors, who are highly competent in this field for the state to get the best,” he said.

Nasarawa Assembly withdraws impeachment threat on governor

The Nasarawa State House of Assembly on Tuesday withdrew its earlier threat to impeach Governor Tanko Al-Makura over the rising insecurity in the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the lawmakers’ action followed the submission of a report by the House Committee on Security Matters headed by Alhaji Mohammed Baba-Ibaku(PDP- Udege/LOko).

While submitting the reports, Baba-Ibaku said the measures contained in the report would guide the governor against future crisis, urging him to ensure that the security operatives mounted check points in various areas facing security challenges.

BATN donates cassava plant to Nasarawa

The British American Tobacco Nigeria (BATN) has boosted the Nasarawa State FADAMA III project with a cassava-processing plant as well as a borehole with a 5,000 water storage tank.

The facility is powered by an electricity generator also donated by the tobacco firm.

BATN said it decided to intervene in cassava processing to ensure higher income and better quality of life for the citizens.

The executive director of BATN, Gbenga Ibikunle, during the commissioning of the cassava processing plant in Lafia, explained that the industry will greatly improve efficiency in the processing of agricultural produce as it is also geared towards reducing wastage and increasing productivity.

Donating the facility to Ezzen Fadama III Users Group of Bulan Sidi community in Lafia, he emphasised the need to properly take care of the industry and regard the project as their own, rather than seeing it as not belonging to anybody in particular.

“Let me implore all members of this community to take very good care of this plant and all the facilities that are being handed over today,” he said.

He equally told them that the new system of processing cassava into garri and other derivatives will engender higher product quality, higher income and better quality of life for members of the Ezzen Fadama III Users Groups, Bukan Sidi community.

The mission of the foundation, according to him, “is to improve the quality of life of citizens in rural and urban areas of Nigeria through the implementation of various community development projects in four areas.”

The four areas, he explained, are sustainable agricultural development, sustainable potable water supply, sustainabe environmental protection and sustainable educational development.

On the donated facilities, Ibikunle said that “they are now the property of the entire Ezzen Fadama III Users Groups, Bukan Sidi community and you must use them faithfully and guard them jealously.”

He added that the BATN foundation is confident that “the industry will bring the best sustainable benefits to you all.”

  • Team Nasarawa to use customised kits

Team Nasarawa is to don customised jerseys and kits at the 18th National Sports Festival (NSF) in Lagos, to enhance its performance, the state’s Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Daniel Ogazi said on Monday.

Ogazi disclosed this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lafia. He said that the customised jerseys and kits were manufactured by a sporting outfit based in Austria. The commissioner said the jerseys and sporting shoes were designed in consonance with the prevailing weather situation in Lagos.

“We had to send them the exact temperatures in Lagos, to enable the manufacturers to be able to develop the kits. As we speak, most of the consignments have arrived in Lagos. It might interest you to know that the bicycles our athletes will use in Lagos, for instance, are the type used at the 2012 Olympic Games in London,” he added.

Ogazi said over 70 athletes would be representing the state in 11 sports at the festival, stressing that a Local Organising Committee (LOC) was being constituted by the State government, to ensure a successful outing for the team.
