    ‘NASENI’s innovations propel industrial growth’

National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) said it ignited a wave of industrialisation through collaborations with states and firms this year.

This transformative progress was unveiled by Executive Vice Chair and Chief Executive Officer of NASENI, Khalil Halilu, at a presentation of the agency’s scorecard to media executives in Abuja.

Halilu noted the agency’s alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda,” focusing on industrial development in 36 states and Federal Capital Territory.

He said these efforts are the foundation for a more diversified and resilient economy.

In a bid to revolutionise agriculture, Halilu said NASENI partnered with Nigeria Incentive-Based Risk Sharing System for Agricultural Lending (NIRSAL).

Noting he recently hosted NIRSAL’s Managing Director, Hamid Sa’ad, to discuss implementation of “3C’s” operating principles: Collaboration, Creation and Commercialisation, Halilu said their dialogue centred on enhancing financing solutions and providing farmers access to cutting-edge technologies, a move poised to boost agricultural productivity and profitability.

Demonstrating its commitment to environmental sustainability and economic growth, he said NASENI spearheaded a groundbreaking waste-to-wealth initiative.

He said through its Advanced Manufacturing Technology Development Institute (AMTDI) in Jalingo, he said the agency teamed up with the Taraba State Ministry of Waste and Resource Innovation.

This collaboration, he said, transformed waste into valuable resources by developing machines and technologies that could serve as revenue generators for the state.

He said: “A notable project involves NASENI’s Scientific Equipment Development Institute (SEDI) in Enugu, which partnered Benin Republic’s Gbobeto company. Together, they are fabricating briquette-making machines as part of a broader waste-to-wealth effort, converting waste materials into alternative fuel sources. This innovation reduces environmental pollution and provides a sustainable energy option for communities.

Furthermore, he said, NASENI’s reach extended beyond project collaborations, with its institutes playing a key role in promoting indigenous technologies.

“At the 38th Lagos International Trade Fair, NASENI’s Technology Linkage Office joined forces with many institutes, including Engineering Development Institute in Akure, Power Equipment and Electrical Machinery Development Institute in Okene, and Prototype Engineering Development Institute) in Ilesha.

“They showcased a wide array of innovative products and technologies, underscoring NASENI’s role in driving industrialisation”, Halilu noted.

NASENI lists benefits of CNG as Tinubu launches conversion centre

President Bola Tinubu yesterday inaugurated an All-One Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Reverse-Engineering, Training, Filling, and Conversion Centre in Abuja.

The centre was established by the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) in collaboration with Portland Gas Limited.

The agency took time to explain how much cheaper the gas is in relation to the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).

The president was represented on the occasion by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

A statement from the agency to The Nation, said the Chief Executive Officer of Portland Gas Limited, Mr. Folajimi Mohammed said: “On average, a petrol vehicle consumes about 60 liters of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) to travel 250 kilometers, costing approximately N37,020, given current fuel prices. In contrast, a CNG vehicle requires about 18 standard cubic meters (scm) of gas for the same distance, costing around N3,600.

“For a 250 km drive, this translates to a significant cost saving, highlighting the economic benefits of CNG over PMS. CNG and hybrid vehicles offer better efficiency and lower emissions and by embracing CNG, we not only reduce our transportation costs but also contribute to a cleaner environment.”

Mohammed said the bold step taken by the President in the removal of fuel subsidy presented an opportunity to drive towards CNG, which is not only more affordable but also environmentally friendly.

NASENI-Portland partnership marks a significant step forward in Nigeria’s mission to champion natural gas initiatives.

The statement further quoted him as saying: “Portland Gas’s Partnership with NASENI is a testament of how the Government and private sector can leverage expertise, innovation, and creativity which marks a significant step forward in our mission to champion the natural gas initiative in Nigeria.

“Natural gas, particularly Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), offers a sustainable and economically viable alternative to traditional petroleum products.

“With Nigeria’s vast natural gas reserves, estimated at over 200 trillion cubic feet, we are in a steadfast position to lead this transformation. The NASENI-Portland partnership aims to harness these resources efficiently, advancing technological innovation and infrastructure development in the natural gas sector.

“Immediate adoption of CNG can bring transformative changes. Let’s take a cue from Iran, where over 3.5 million vehicles run on CNG, making it a global leader in CNG adoption. There is no reason why Nigeria cannot replicate and even surpass this success. With the right policies, infrastructure, and public awareness, we can transition towards a more sustainable and economically sound energy future,” he said.

Mohammed commended President Tinubu for his vision to diversify the nation’s energy sources, which aims to  bring down the cost of transportation in the country.
