My stage name has no meaning – Rapper Nasty C

South African rapper David Junior Ngcobo, better known as Nasty C, has disclosed that his stage name has no special meaning but was simply formed by putting letters together.

Speaking in a recent interview with YouTuber Madame Joyce in London, the award-winning artiste admitted he once fabricated a story that his first producer nicknamed him “Nasty Cat,” which later inspired his stage name.

He clarified that the tale was just a way to build a narrative and acknowledge the producer who supported him in the early days of his career.

Nasty C said, “It’s random. It just put a bunch of letters together, and I started making words out of it, and then I picked that one. I have no idea [about the meaning of the name or what it stands for], I don’t know.

“There’s a story I used to tell people. The first guy to ever record me was very close to my big brother. He was having a session, and I was supposed to go next, and he was telling the guy he just recorded, like, ‘Yo, there’s this kid blablabal. He’s really dope. He’s a Nasty Cat.’ Then I took the ‘AT’ out of Cat to form ‘Nasty C.’

“But it’s a lie. I just wanted to have a story, and I wanted to mention that guy’s name because he really did help me start my career. My stage name is just vibe. I want to change it now.”

According to him, he now plans to change his stage name to Ivyson, inspired by his late mother’s name, Ivy, which he believes will better represent him as an artist moving forward.

“That will make a name. My mom’s name is Ivy, so I will use Ivyson as the name,” he added, showing off the word tattooed on his arm.

Heavy drinking ages people faster, says Nasty C

South African rapper Nasty C has shared his struggles with alcohol addiction, revealing that he once consumed alcohol daily in the studio, at restaurants, and even during performances.

In an interview with British-Nigerian media personality Madame Joyce, he admitted that his high tolerance often made him the last person standing, but it also prevented him from recognising when things were going wrong.

He explained that his decision to cut down on drinking was motivated by a desire to maintain his youthful appearance.

According to him, South Africans use the term “phuza face” to describe someone who looks much older than their actual age due to excessive drinking, with many believing alcohol can make a person look up to 10 years older.

Nasty C said, “I was addicted to alcohol. I was drinking every night. Every time I go to the studio, restaurant, I drink. Every time I perform, I drink.

“Also, my tolerance when it comes to alcohol was very high, too. When I drink alcohol with friends, I would be the last one to be intoxicated. And I feel it’s a bad thing because you never know when something is going wrong until it’s too late. I got off the vodka a little bit, but I was drinking everything else. Whisky, cognac, tequila, rum – I was drinking everything.

“I gave up alcohol because I don’t want to get a ‘phuza face.’ There’s a thing in South Africa we call a ‘phuza face’ – when you age really quickly because you drink a lot of alcohol, when you start looking 10 years older than you actually are.”

“I mean, of course, there are some songs where it is like autotuned heavy, this n*gga not saying sh*t. He is just saying ny*sh a bunch of times. But live instrument rolls, original melodies, n*ggas who can actually sing, that is music, bro. Their music lasts forever.

“Hip-hop, we sample a lot. I’m not being ungrateful to hip-hop. I love hip-hop. I am hip-hop to the core. I am hip-hop till I die. But hip-hop, we out here playing this weird game where it is like everyone is fake rich, fake balling, fake gangster. I’m sick and tired of hearing n*ggas speaking about spending in songs. I’m like, ‘N*gga, you spending nothing. Shut the f*ck up.”
