“The programme is going concurrently in the 21 local government areas in the state,’’ he said.

The coordinator acknowledged the rising unemployment rate in the country but regretted the negative attitude of youths to apprenticeship.
He decried how some of the beneficiaries were not paying back the soft loans because the politicians who nominated them gave them the impressions that NDE empowerment programme was entirely free.

“Part of the challenges is that our graduates don’t pay back their loans, they use it to shore up their egos and give them the impression that the startup loan is free money from government.

“So, when we go to them they say we should go and meet the politicians who signed for them.

“People are not serious in the training and entrepreneurship; they seem to be more interested in the stipend we pay them as trainees.

“We have good programmes to solve unemployment but we are worried that they are not embracing it, our store is filled with idle equipment, even our forms are not filled to indicate that they want resettlement,’’ Iroegbu said.

According to him, the training scheme is a special programme sponsored by political office holders in collaboration with the NDE through its vocational skills development department to train unemployed people across the three senatorial districts of the state.

“Today, we are flagging-off the training of 2,000 unemployed people for cosmetology and other seven different skills across the state.

“It is a special programme because all the trainees were recruited by political office holders such as the Governor, Deputy Governor, Senators, members of House of Representatives, Members of House of Assembly, Minister from the state and some traditional rulers across the state.

“The trainees were divided into two categories, 1,400 of them mainly women will be trained on cosmetology for two weeks.

“Participants will not pay any amount for the training but each of the trainees will be paid stipend during the training and at the end of the exercise some of the trainees will be given fund to start their own businesses.

“The essence is to reduce restlessness in the society and to encourage them to acquire skills,” he said.

He admonished the trainees to avail themselves the opportunity by taking the training serious.

“My advice to trainees is to take it serious because some people may think it is a joke but at the end of the exercise they discover it is a long career and a big business.

“Put in your best because being skillful in one’s career will attract encouraging patronage,” Aliu advised.

One of the trainees, Mr Oladele Fatokun, from Owo Local Government Area, appreciated NDE for the gesture, urging the government to increase the number of participants and make it more than once in a year.

“Government should increase the number of participants because many people are still roaming the streets without work.

“And if more youths can engage in this kind of skill acquisition all manner of atrocity in the society will be reduced,’’ he said.

Also speaking, Mrs Esther Adebayo, from Akure South Local Government Area, showed her appreciation for being among the trainees, saying that the skills acquired would provide them with the best alternative source of livelihood.

According to Dr. Nasir Mohammed, the principal function of NDE as an apex job creation agency in the country is to train and empower the jobless and the vulnerable. “We have the mandate and capacity to train and empower all unemployed persons including trafficked persons for self-employment in various fields. Director General of NAPTIP, Mrs Julie Donli Okah, said the need to assist victims of human trafficking in finding their feet in the society has become urgent and relevant to the success of NAPTIP as an agency.

According to the NAPTIP boss, ‘’we counsel and rehabilitate them but because of financial constraints, we have not been quite forthcoming in the area of Training and Resettlement.

It was gathered that the process towards the realization of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which was consummated by the signatures of the two Chief Executives started four months ago when the Director General, NDE and his management paid a courtesy call on the management of NAPTIP with the two agencies expressed the desire to collaborate in the promotion of self-employment and poverty reduction among victims of human trafficking in Nigeria.

  • NDE trains 432 graduates on solar energy

THE National Directorate of Employment (NDE) has taken another step in its mandate to reduce unemployment and encourage youths in self-employed skill acquisitions.

Its Director General, Dr. Nasir Ladan Mohammed Argungu, said this at the opening of the Solar Energy Training Scheme (SETS) organised by the Special Public Works (SPW) of the directorate in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

It is presently training 432 trainees from 12 pilot states comprising two states from each geopolitical zone of which Ogun State is one with 36 participants.

The training will last for two months.

Argungu, who was represented by the state Coordinator of NDE, Mr. Femi Oyenekan, said the SETS was one of the renewable energy training schemes designed by the directorate to generate employment for the unemployed graduates to explore new areas of job creation to develop critical sector of the economy and the national needs.

“Energy as one of the integral infrastructural components needed for urban and rural economic development.  Realising the enormous demand for energy in Nigeria and the sector potentials for employment, the organisation (NDE) sought for other means of power production and therefore, adopted renewable energy training scheme as one of its strategies for employment generation,” he said.

“The overwhelming success of the first batch undoubtedly shows Nigerians are not only industrious but highly productive if necessary encouragement is put in place.

“Nigeria today is witnessing slow progress in power generation which is not adequate for our industrial sector operation capacity.  This situation coupled with the explosive population of over 160 million people that needs constant supply of energy to be productive in the society.   Sadly, this circumstance happens in the face of abundant sunshine and human resources in the country.   Solar Energy, therefore, becomes the obvious alternative to the present epileptic power problem in the country,” he said.
