  • ‘Shelve ‘Biafra’, negotiate for Nigeria’s presidency’

Chief Donatus Nwankpa, the Chairman, All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia, has advised pro-Biafra agitators to shelve their secession plan and negotiate to produce an Igbo president in the country.

Nwankpa gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Umuahia on Sunday.

The APC chieftain stated that the agitation for a Biafra Republic is not a viable option for the Southeast zone of the country.

“For the Biafran agitators, I think Ndigbo need two things: One is that they should try and produce a president of Nigeria.

“They should try and work hard to see that a president comes from the Southeast.’’

Nwankpa said a president of Igbo extraction would make the ‘no victor, no vanquished’ declaration at the end of the 30-month Nigerian civil war more realistic.

He, therefore, urged prominent Igbo politicians to mobilise their resources and contacts to negotiate for an Igbo president.

Nwankpa further said Ndigbo needed to ensure massive infrastructure and economic development of the zone.

“An Igbo man is hardworking, industrious and creative.

“He does not need government empowerment, which to me, only makes people lazy.

“The Igbo man needs good roads, regular power supply and a conducive economic climate to drive his enterprise to the peak.’’

Nwankpa, a one-time state legislator, also spoke on the growing agitation for the restructuring of Nigeria along regional lines.

“The agitation for restructuring has to do with the problem of discomfort and suspicion of one another in the country,” he said.
He said Nigerians needed to understand and coexist peacefully rather than to tolerate one another.

The APC chair further said there was nothing wrong with the present structure of the country and its constitution.

He said, “the Nigerian constitution is one of the best drafted constitutions in the world.”

Nwankpa blamed the underdevelopment of some sections of the country on the excesses and self-aggrandisement of some of the past and present governors.

He alleged that the governors wielded so much power but failed to channel such power toward the development of the country.

Nwankpa described the three-month ultimatum issued to Ndigbo by some Arewa youths as “a wake-up call on Ndigbo to come home and invest and develop their area’’.

Quit Notice: Group warns Ohaneze over Utterances

The leader of Peoples Movement for a New Nigeria (PMNN), Alhaji Yahaya Ndu and two times Presidential Candidate of the defunct African Renaissance Party has condemned the call by Ohaneze Ndigbo on Igbo people living in the North to defend themselves against possible attack by northerners.

Ndu, an Igbo prominent son, explained that the statement credited to the leader of Ohaneze Ndigbo Youth Council, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, would only expose the people of the South East in the North to avoidable attacks from northerners.

It will be recalled that Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council had told Igbo living in the North to prepare to defend themselves against possible attack by northerners.

National President of the OYC, Isiguzoro, had said in Enugu that the ultimatum issued to Igbo by the northern groups was a call to arms, and should be treated as such by security agencies.

Addressing the press Tuesday in Port Harcourt, Ndu argued that it would be difficult for the Igbo, who could not contain the herdsmen attack against them in Enugu, Abia and other part of the South East, to defend themselves against any attack in the northern part of the country.

The former presidential candidate of the defunct African Renaissance Party, described Isiguzoro’s utterance as frightening and in bad taste.

He also described a situation where some persons in the South East would be calling for secession, not minding the huge population of Ndigbo and their investments in the North.

According to him, rather than supporting a breakaway from Nigeria, Ohaneze should have advised against it and insist on the restructuring of the country.

“It is wrong for Ohaneze to have said that Igbo people in the North should defend themselves. It is in bad taste and I find it frightening. If Igbo cannot defend themselves when herdsmen attack them in their villages in the South East, is it in the North that they can defend themselves?

“The issue of Biafra should be discussed. Town unions in Igboland and Igbo people living in the North should discuss this. I do not believe in secession and I also do not believe in the injustice against Ndigbo.

“You (Ohaneze) cannot stay in Enugu and ask defenceless Igbo people in the North to defend themselves. The first civil war was not discussed and 50 years after, we want to make the same mistake again.

“Some are saying the Igbo in the North should start returning, if they return, what would they train their children with? What would they feed their family with.”

He, however, recommended an urgent national conference that would be mass-participatory to discuss the way forward for Nigeria and also consider the agitations of some ethnic groups in the country.

Ndu said, “The Presidency and the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the two arms of the National Assembly, in appreciation of the enormity of the danger confronting the Federal Republic, should organise a mass-participatory, all Nigerian peoples national conference from all wards of the republic and across the world where members of the Nigerian Diaspora to fashion out modalities for peaceful coexistence and prosperity of the nation from latest, October 1, 2017.”

On the perceived injustice against the South East, he added, “What should we do against the injustices against Ndigbo? The perfect opportunity to address the issue of restructuring and bad roads in the South East should have been addressed by the Goodluck Jonathan administration.

“Jonathan held a national conference that was not sovereign and gave limitations on the issues to be discussed.”

  • Nobody can issue a quit notice to anyone – Police

Nobody can issue a quit notice to anyone – Police

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris, has ordered the Commissioner of Police (CP) in Kaduna State to investigate and arrest members of the Coalition of Northern Youths for issuing an ultimatum to South Easterners living in the North.

The Coalition of Northern Youths on June 6, at a news conference in Kaduna, gave a three-month ultimatum to South Easterners living in the North to leave.

It had also ordered Northerners living in the South-Eastern part of the country to return to the North.

The group attributed the ultimatum to the constant agitation by the Igbo ethnic group to have their own independent country.

Also, Gov. Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State had ordered the investigation, arrest and prosecution of the signatories to the communique issued at the end of the coalition of a northern youth news conference.

The I-G gave the order at a meeting with Commissioners of Police and other high ranking officers on Thursday in Abuja.

He warned that no individual or group of persons had the right to ask any individual to leave his or her place of residence in any part of the country.

He ordered other state commissioners of police in the North and Assistant Inspectors – General of Police in the various zonal commands to do same.

He said: “as Commissioners of Police and Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, we have the responsibility to stop this group of persons from carrying out their threats.

“I want us to be at alert to ensure that such persons or group were stopped at all cost from carrying out their threats.

“No individual has the authority to stop anybody from looking for his daily bread.

He explained that the Nigerian Constitution guarantees every citizen the right to live in any part of the country he or she chooses.

On abuse of siren and spy number plate by unauthorised persons, Idris said that a task force would be constituted across the country to check the ugly situation.

He noted that some individuals used them to commit crimes in the society, adding that synergy between the force and other security agencies was critical to its operations.

“We are going to check the excesses of these individuals who use the siren and spy number plate,” he said.

The police boss urged the various commands to beef up security in their formations as security challenges were taking different dimensions.

He said the force had started the establishment of some operational units in the commands across the country to tackle emerging security challenges.

He added that “we are facing new security challenges in the country and we have to respond to it.

“We are trying to enhance our capacity with the establishment of these units, taking into consideration the new security challenges in the country.”

He explained that every commissioner of police was in charge of units in his or her
command, weather they were from the Force headquarters.

Idris urged state governors to support the force by establishing these units for an effective response to security threats across the country.

Global analyst rejects eviction of Ndigbo from North

Global affairs analyst and All Progressives Congress (APC) Chief, Ayoola Lawal in a conversation with pressmen in Copenhagen, Denmark, has vehemently condemned the statement credited to the group named Coalition of Northern Youths “Ordering Igbo people to vacate Northern Nigeria within 3 months”.

According to Lawal, issuing of threat statement to a certain tribe and ethnic group to vacate a region of the country is a threat to the unity of Nigeria.

“IPOB group might be agitating for freedom of self-governance but they never issue a threat to any tribe to vacate their region.

It is strange that the security operatives that arrested Nnamdi Kanu immediately he entered Nigeria are yet to call this group or leader for clarification on such statement credited to the group. I think we have passed the era when freedom of speech does not presume rationality and a restrained speech by a certain group of people.

“The unity of Nigeria is already threatened by the current voices from different ethnic groups that constitute Nigeria and history might not forgive our leaders and elders if this is not resolved peacefully before history repeats itself, he observed.

The APC Chief further said that the time to urgently revisit the togetherness and restructure Nigeria’ unity without violence might be now.

“We are sitting on a keg of gunpowder if we allow the same agitation from different ethnic groups to fester for too long without resolving it once and for all,” he said.

90 days quit notice: Ohanaeze responds, advises Ndigbo

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex socio-political body of the Igbo has demanded ‘urgent action’ from the country’s security agencies following the 90 days ultimatum given to Igbos resident in Northern Nigeria by a coalition of Northern groups, including the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum.

The Ohanaeze urged all Igbos in the North to be ‘vigilant’ while going about their daily activities.

The Deputy Publicity Secretary of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Mr. Chuks Ibegbu, who spoke with Journalist noted that security agencies, particularly, the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Police, should take immediate steps to forestall any plan to launch attacks against the Igbos in the North.

The DSS, the police and other security agencies should take note of the statement by the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum and the other Northern groups for issuing this threat against the Igbo.

“It should not be seen as an empty threat; urgent action is needed to foil the plan to attack the Igbo in the North. It happened in the past and we don’t want it to happen again.

“In fact, Yerima Shettima should be arrested by the DSS immediately. We are watching to see what the DSS would do in this situation.

“Shettima’s statement is treasonable; he is inciting one section of the country against another section and we know from experience that this sort of thing could lead to a civil war. His utterances could destroy this country.”

Recall that the coalition of Northern groups, including the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, on Tuesday announced that all Igbos resident in the Northern parts of Nigeria have three months to quit or be forced out after the expiration of the October 1, 2017 deadline.

“We are also telling our brothers (northerners) out there in the South-East to get prepared to come back home,” the National President, AYCF, Yerima Shettima, said at a press conference in Kaduna.

The ultimatum followed a successful sit-at-home order enforced by the Nnamdi Kanu-led Indigenous People of Biafra on May 30, 2017 which the five South-East states complied with.

The ultimatum was handed down at a well-attended press conference held at the Arewa House, Kaduna, on Tuesday.

The text of the press conference signed by Nastura Ashir Sharif (Arewa Citizens Action for Change);  Alhaji Shettima Yerima (Arewa Youth Consultative Forum); Aminu Adam (Arewa Youth Development Foundation); Alfred Solomon, (Arewa Students Forum); Abdul-Azeez Suleiman (Northern Emancipation Network), as well as Joshua Viashman, who signed on behalf of the Northern Youth Vanguard.

  • APC: Fani-Kayode should fight for Yoruba, not Ndigbo

APC: Fani-Kayode should fight for Yoruba, not Ndigbo

The Anambra State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has faulted former Aviation Minister, Mr Femi Fani-Kayode, for fighting for Ndigbo, instead of his Yoruba race.

In a statement yesterday by its Publicity Secretary, Okelo Madukaife, Anambra APC said: “The serial mind-management composed by a group dwelling in the past, and being implemented through Mr Femi Fani-Kayode and his thoughtless collaborators to distance Ndigbo from the national power centre of the day is a huge joke that is 50 years late.

“The facts of history suggested by the pattern of politics recorded for Chief Remilekun Fani-Kayode, whose scion, Femi is and whose political fountain the latter drew deep from, is not lost on any Igbo, let alone their leaders.

“To this extent, we hasten to remind the people of South East Nigeria that 24 hours after the victory of APC in Osun State governorship elections in 2014, Femi Fani-Kayode was one of the first to congratulate our great party, for which history recorded our gratitude at the demonstration of sportsmanship spirit, or so we felt.

“The loquacious ex-minister did not at the time consider that thevictors he was congratulating were all Yorubas and were neither crazy, nor needed their heads examined for believing in APC and leading it to victory.

“How this unstable character who has managed to escape imprisonment under the Goodluck Jonathan Presidency, and is answering to serial infractions at the moment got to the conclusion that Ndigbo should stay out of APC ,a party he has been in and out of recently or have their heads examined beats anyone’s imagination.

“If an amorphous kind of politics that relishes skewed ethnic manipulation for selfish advantage is not involved, one wonders what is.

“Ndigbo do not need a Femi Fani Kayode to be led into a selfish, lopsided and hate-filled conversation, evidenced by nothing but his effervescent altercations.

“They do not require selfish gigolos running their lives of the pages of newspapers, and in the process insulting their leaders, to know those who love or hate them.

“Consequently, no Igbo has confused his volunteer of creative self-serving fiction for love, let alone Senator Chris Nwabueze Ngige or Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, who, while he was ill and hospitalised, had to put up with yet another set of empty amorous claims from the noisiest ex-minister in Nigeria’s history.

“In that sense, we deeply implore Fani-Kayode to refocus on finding the best defence for his criminal trials and the challenges of the Yoruba nation as Ndigbo are not so much in lack, that they would require mercenary activists from Osun or even some Ekiti collaborators-arguably rejects from their immediate environment- to give them an arrowhead.

  • We’re grateful to Ambode, say Ndigbo

Pleased with the success recorded at the just-held solidarity celebration of Lagos at 50 by the Igbo Community in Lagos State, the member representing Oshodi/Isolo 11 State Constituency in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Jude Emeka Idimogu (KSM) has expressed his unalloyed gratitude to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for identifying with Ndigbo.

Addressing journalists at a joint press conference he organised in conjunction with the Eze Ndigbo of Lagos State, Christian Uchechukwu Nwachukwu (JP) on Sunday to appraise the success of Lagos at 50 celebrations organised by Ndigbo

in Lagos at the Lagos State Igbo Community Centre, Okota Lagos, Hon. Idimogu noted that for the Lagos State government to be present at the event was a “huge way of telling the Igbo resident in Lagos that the government identifies with you and is ready to support you in anything positive that you do.”

“For Governor Ambode to send a high-profile representative in the person of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) Mr Tunji Bello indicates that he means well for Ndigbo and other ethnic groups that are not indigenous to the state. It also demonstrates that the state and its indigenes regard Ndigbo as partners in progress.”

Hon. Idimogu was also grateful to the Deputy Governor, Dr Idiat Oluranti Adebule for identifying with the Igbo in Lagos. He paid special tribute and expressed unreserved gratitude to the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa whom he described as “the speaking Speaker, Speaker of Speakers” for honouring Ndigbo invitation.

He also thanked Principal officers of the House and other members of the Lagos State House of Assembly for their love and friendship.

The lawmaker revealed that Ndigbo in Lagos are known for their enterprise and hard work, even as he said their cosmopolitan nature gives them an edge over others in areas of adventure and investment.

“The Igbo race regards all parts of the country as their second home. But the way they do business and invest wholeheartedly in Lagos State shows they regard the state as their home, not even a second home. This is cheery in the sense that their contributions to the growth and development of the state are being recognized and appreciated by their wonderful and friendly host communities.

“As stated previously, Ndigbo held the solidarity session of Lagos at 50 in order to wish the government and people of Lagos State well. We are happy with them for attaining 50 years as a geographical entity. We also wish to show our solidarity with them for being a good host,” he said.

He pledged that Ndigbo will continue to be law-abiding, show respect to constituted authority and continue to contribute immensely to the socio-economic and political development of the state that has been favourable to them.

Contributing, Eze Nwachukwu also thanked the government and people of Lagos State for their love and good relationship they have exhibited towards Ndigbo.

Speaking glowingly about the achievements of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, Eze Nwachukwu noted that Governor Ambode has shown love for Ndigbo by identifying with them by sending an influential representative to represent the state. That shows that he loves Ndigbo as he loves all resident in the state.

He praised him for all his development strides that have made Lagos true-life Centre of Excellence and economic capital of West Africa.

“Ambode’s strides since he assumed office have been tremendous. He has made development get to the grassroots, even as he has taken Lagos State to a higher level. Ndigbo in Lagos are happy to identify with him and the entire people of Lagos State.

“The relationship built over the years by our forebears over five decades ago should be sustained. That was why we decided to hold a solidarity session to commemorate 50 years of the creation of Lagos State. Ndigbo are happy with the people and government of Lagos State for accommodating our people all these years and provided for them enabling environment conducive enough to carry out their legitimate businesses,” he said.

    Ndigbo celebrate Lagos at 50

The Igbo Community in Lagos, held a solidarity celebration of Lagos at 50. The event, which was held at the VIP Lounge, Entrance A, National Arts Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos brought together personalities and policymakers from all the states of the federation. NNEKA NWANERI reports

As part of activities lined up for the month-long celebration of Lagos at 50, the Igbo Community in Lagos (Ndigbo), under the leadership of Eze Ndigbo of Lagos State, Christian Uchechukwu Nwachukwu held a solidarity festivity to commemorate the 50 years of the existence of the state as a geographical entity.

The event was also a showcase for the rich cultural heritage of the Igbo Community.

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode was represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Tunji Bello who appreciated the gesture of the outstanding achievements of Ndigbo to the state and urged that they continue to maintain harmonious co-existence

Describing Lagos as a mini-Nigeria, the SSG called on citizens to remain law-abiding and faithfully discharge their civic responsibilities that have made the state the benchmark of good governance and a place where opportunities are created for everyone to realise their full potential.

One of the hosts and member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon (Sir) Jude Emeka Idimogu (KSM), who represents Oshodi/Isolo State Constituency II, said Lagos is gradually tilting towards being a mega city that can be likened to Johannesburg in South Africa and Cairo in Egypt. He also added that Lagos is the first place that comes in mind to anyone who says he is coming to a South-western state.

“Lagos is a land of great opportunity. We are celebrating not just because Lagos is 50, we are celebrating good roads, flyover bridges, good transport system, maximum security and street lights, to mention but a few.

“Apart from the cosmopolitan nature of the state, Lagos is the safest place for the Igbo man outside his home land and provides the best opportunity for Ndigbo to do their legitimate businesses; in an atmosphere conducive enough to prosperity and making the best out of these great opportunities provided by the state.

High point of the event was the presentation of award plaques and special recognition to Governor Ambode and Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha. Governor Okorocha was represented by the Imo State Liaison Officer, Nze Steve Asimobi.

Others who received awards were Hon. Idimogu and former Inspector-General of Police, Sir Mike Okiro, among others.

Also at the event was the Iyaloja-General, Folashade Tinubu-Ojo (who also received a prestigeous award); Lagos All Progressives Congress spokesperson Joe Igbokwe and Hon Desmond Elliot of the Surulere Constituency.

A book, entitled: Ndigbo: A Factor in Lagos State Development, written by Chief Geoffrey Umeh was unveiled and launched.

The book chronicles the existing cordial relationship between Igbo and Yoruba as well as the contributions of Igbo sons and daughters to the development of Lagos in the past 50 years.

A lecture was delivered by Dr Fredrick Nzeako, a lawyer and development economist on the theme: “Lagos Cosmopolitanism, Democracy and Governance: The Challenges of non-indigenes (Ndigbo) in the Development Process of Lagos State.”

Another Member of House of Assembly, Hon Layi Olawale said the Igbo asking for a special status means asking for too much since Lagos State Government has always been recognising them as part and parcel of the economy of the state.

“In terms of representation, they are in the cabinet and in the party structure too even at the national level. So, asking for a special status will call for other ethnic bodies to be asking for their own quota and so will like them to have equal distribution of wealth, which is being manifest in Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s programmes without discrimination.

“All ethic geo-political zones have always been carried along under this administration. Why then are they asking for recognition? Olawale asked.

He, however, praised Ndigbo for their hard work and entrepreneurial spirit.

He said: “I appreciate their resilience and hard work and entrepreneurship nature of an Igbo man. This they should keep up because no other ethnic group can be successful in another town. Despite the intimidation and problems, they are very dogged and other ethnic groups should take a cue from them.”

Director-General for Black and African Art Civilisation (CBAAC), Dr Ferdinand Aniekwe said “Igbo have contributed in several factors of economic integration and are the only ethnic group that will build houses and be relaxed; a feat they are yet to achieve in Igbo land.

“They are everywhere in African countries and even beyond the continent. They always form communities where the serve selflessly for the development of such places. They should be given honour and their pride of place because it is clear that they have not been given the political position they have been looking for. It is clear to see that they have been marginalised.

There is a fault in the population of Igbo. In Lagos, they are the second largest to the indigenes; in Ogun, they are the second and even in Kastina. Thus, they should be given chances based on their population; not just in Nigeria, but also in international communities.

  • UPP accuses APGA of not fighting for Ndigbo

UPP accuses APGA of not fighting for Ndigbo

The United Progressive Party (UPP) has accused the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) of not fighting for the interest of Ndigbo. The party made the accusation while unfolding its plans for the November 18 governorship election in Anambra State.
Its Publicity Secretary, Mr. Uche Amaku, while speaking with reporters in Awka, the state capital, said UPP was ready to shove APGA aside in the election.
He said: “UPP is sympathetic to Igbo cause, while APGA is not. And that is the difference between the two political parties, and we are set to take what belongs to us”
“After 15 years of APGA’s existence and 11 years in power in Anambra State, it became obvious that the party has lost its bearing and focus and failed to serve as a platform for all marginalised persons in Nigeria, especially Ndigbo, to participate fully in the country’s democratic system”
“APGA became the political instrument of a few individuals and failed to serve, as its intended purpose of mainstreaming the collective aspirations of Ndigbo”
“The party became a tool of political oppression of youths and women, as it failed to provide the enabling environment for many people to gain political experience through participation in democratic governance”
”It was against the need to revert to the original vision of the founding fathers for Ndigbo and politically marginalised persons to have a space for participation and voice that the UPP was founded”
Amaku debunked the allegation that UPP was working with members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and other Biafra agitators to take over Anambra during the election.
He said the UPP would not give its governorship ticket to any aspirant that failed in another party, following his or her defection to the party.

  • ‘Ndigbo, come home to be counted’

The Southeast caucus of Inter-Party Advisory Council, (IPAC), the umbrella body of registered political parties in the country, has called on all eligible Southeasterners to come home and be counted during the census. The group said that when the people of the geopolitical zone take part in the forthcoming census, it will help to ascertain the actual population of Ndigbo and also help in the distribution of infrastructure in the area.

The body also called on the Federal Government to unconditionally release the detained leader of the Independent People of Biafra (IPOB) Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in obedience to a court order.

IPAC, after a two-day retreat in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, condemned what it called the “frequent and indiscriminate shootings and killings of innocent IPOB/MASSOB and unarmed protesters by security agencies who maintain a lackadaisical indifference in handling the armed and murderous Fulani herdsmen issues”.

A 10-point communiqué issued after the retreat, drew attention to “The activities of the Fulani herdsmen in communities in the zone,” and called “on the Federal Government to demonstrate a sincere commitment to eradication of this menace so as to erase the perception of bias and injustice”.

The communique was signed by the chairman of the caucus and Abia State Chairman of IPAC, Prince Emeka Okafor and IPAC chairmen in Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo states.

The communique said that true federalism would be achieved by amending the constitution to devolve more powers to the states and give them more control over natural and human resources located in there, saying that such would make the states more viable and productive.

The communiqué called, “On Southeast governments to work urgently towards creating a conducive environment for living, industry, investment, tourism and trade, including the full establishment and functioning of the South East Nigeria Economic Commission which will facilitate integration, harmonization and cohesiveness of infrastructure and economic development of the South East Nigeria”.

It also called “On all South Easterners in various parts of the world to urgently invest their resources in the South East for the purpose of building a strong regional economy”.

On NNAMDI Kanu, the lamented the continued incarceration of the IPOB leader, and called for his unconditional release in compliance with the court order and also to show a genuine demonstration of the ‘change’ agenda of the Federal Government”.

The IPAC said, “We condemn the frequent and indiscriminate shootings and killings of innocent IPOB/MASSOB and unarmed protesters by the security agencies and maintain a lackadaisical indifference in handling armed and murderous Fulani herdsmen.

“IPAC South East associates herself with the fight against corruption by the present administration and equally commended the release of funds for the purpose of payment of salaries and pensions”.
