NDLEA: no drug can enhance academic performance

The National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has warned students against hard drugs, saying no drug can enhance their academic performance.

NDLEA Kwara Command boss Mohammad Ibrahim gave the advice while speaking with reporters at University of Ilorin (Unilorin).

He said hard drugs did not promote performance in any examination.

Ibrahim stressed that the perceived feelings from drugs would later hurt such a student, adding that they must resist all forms of pressure that could lead to drug abuse.

He said: “Part of what the command is doing differently is to enhance the working ability of the patrol teams to control the state and also to put more officers on the road to intercept substances coming into the state”.

According to him, the target of the unit is the general public, youths and adults, both male and female.

This, he said, was because no human being is immune to drug abuse as drug addiction cuts across all aspects of life.

Ibrahim further explained that all categories of drugs can be abused.

“NAFDAC is in charge of the licit drugs, while the focus of the NDLEA is on illicit drugs and psychoactive substances, which includes cannabis, cocaine and heroine. These are substances completely banned by the law,” he said.

Ibrahim noted that some substances were not banned but controlled because, despite being for medication, they were sometimes abused.

“The consequences of drug abuse can be categorised as social, physiological and physical. There is a part of the brain called the prefrontal cortex which is responsible for reasoning and making decisions.

“It is not fully developed until age 22 or 23 in an individual. So, when being laced with substances, it leads to distortion of perception, thinking and cognitive reasoning, which leads to risky decisions and affects academic performance,” he cautioned.

Navy hands over suspect, seized drugs to NDLEA in Badagry

The Forward Operating Base of Nigerian Navy, Badagry, on Tuesday handed over 13 sacks of cannabis sativa worth N5.5 million and one suspect to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Badagry.

Navy Capt. Adams-Aliu, the Commanding Officer, Forward Operating Base, Badagry, said the items were seized on Aug.24 and 27 at different places.

“On Aug.24, at about 10.00.p.m, the Base quick response team, acting on intelligence report, raided some hideouts at Ashipa, at Seme border.

“We discovered a particular building where cannabis sativa was being brought in from Benin Republic and then distributed.

“One suspect was arrested with four sacks of cannabis sativa,” he said.

Adams-Aliu stated that on Aug.27, the team seized nine sacks of cannabis sativa valued at N5m.

“During another raid on Aug.27, at about 2.30.p.m., the team seized another nine sacks of cannabis sativa at a place called Akoro beach, near Seme border.

“On sighting us, they fled, but we were able to recover the cannabis sativa. The hard drugs were smuggled into the country from Benin Republic.

“No suspect was arrested because they ran away,” he said.

He said that the total value of items seized was N5.5 million.

Adams-Aliu, handing over to the items and suspect to Chief Superintendent of Narcotics, Alli Gambo, of Badagry Marine, said this was in compliance with the Nigerian Navy Trinity of action.

According to the commanding officer, this includes surveillance, response initiatives and law enforcement.

“Our response initiative is what led to this arrest, why we are here today, which means we are in the third phase of action.

“This is a hand over of the suspect and the items to NDLEA for them to take over the case.”

The Commanding Officer recalled that after the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Adm. E. I. Ogala was appointed in June 2023, he came out with his strategic directive.

“CNS strategic directive No. 6 of 2023, Paragraph 9, states clearly that the strategic end-state of Nigeria Navy operations is to ensure a safe and secure maritime environment.

“It is not possible that criminals will have safe passage within Nigeria waters. This is a warning to all criminal elements thinking that Nigeria waters can be for criminal activities,” he said.

Receiving the exhibits, Ali Gambo assured the navy that proper investigation would be conducted by the agency to reveal the real owner of the items.

He said that whatever the outcome would determine the effect of the exhibits.

Meanwhile, the suspect said he ventured into carrying hard drugs when his house got burnt and there was no hope for him to feed his family.

He appealed that he would not go back to hard drugs business if he was forgiven.

Babafemi said the force of his car’s speed also pulled down the concrete wall of his neighbour’s compound and from there he dived out of the vehicle to escape.

The statement added that, “A thorough search of his apartment however led to the recovery of 10.5 kilograms of Loud, while the operative knocked down suffered multiple injuries all over his body and compound fracture on his two legs, for which he is currently on hospital admission for treatment.

NDLEA partners Healthgarde to tackle drug abuses

In commemoration of the United Nations International Day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), in collaboration with Healthgarde International, held a conference to research and address the major problems that illicit drugs represent for society.

The conference, which was tagged, ‘Best approaches to drug control: The role of the entertainment industry practitioners,’ was attended by top entertainers, stakeholders as well as various law enforcement agencies.

The UN World Drug Day is observed yearly to strengthen action and cooperation in achieving a world-free drug abuse. This year’s theme is “Addressing drug challenges in health and humanitarian crises.”

The Chairman, NDLEA, Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa (rtd), highlighted that there was the need for a solidarity fight against drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

Gen. Marwa, who was represented by Segun Okeh, said the agency would collaborate with various subsectors of the industry to widen public awareness. “It is our wish that the entertainment industry practitioners will join NDLEA for enlightenment and fight against drug abuse. We need to appeal to the entertainment industry practitioners not to send the wrong message that has drug abuse content in your cast, script, and presentation on the screen. You must watch properly the contents while processing entertainment for the public. There is the tendency for the young mind to believe that what they see in entertainment is real,” he said.

Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, Abiodun Alabi, represented by CSP Gbenga Stephen, applauded NDLEA and expressed the desire to work with the agency to curb the trending menace in the country. He pointed out that lots of committed crimes were attributable to the increase in drug abuse.

The National Coordinator, NDLEA Celebrity Drug Free Club, Wilson Ighodalo, said Nigeria remains a key hub of drug trafficking and cannabis remains the most abused drug in the country. Hence, there is an urgent need for massive investment in healthcare service delivery through community intervention to address drug abuse and encourage youth participation in advocacy against the menace.

For a popular comedian, Gbenga Adeyinka, NDLEA should arrest, prosecute and jail any celebrities who encourage the use of hard drugs in public or on social media. Adeyinka urged his colleagues to stop promoting drug abuse through their content in songs, videos and shows.

NDLEA, Lagos State Commander, Callys Alumona, represented by the Deputy Commander, Drug Demand Reduction, NDLEA Lagos State Command, Eziaghighala Chinyerem, explained that drug abuse and trafficking is a predisposing factor to other criminal activities in the society, including armed robbery, rape, terrorism, ritual murders and other social vices. “An insecure society is not habitable for any sane individual. There is no better time than now for all stakeholders to rise and join NDLEA, the leading agency in this war to make our country a better, safe and habitable nation. All hands must be on deck to fight against this monster before it destroys our society. It is achievable if we jointly gird our loins and fight headlong using evidence-based strategies that will yield a positive result. The atmosphere is already filled with overwhelming challenges in economy and security but with determination from all fronts, resounding victory will achieve at last.”

Chief Executive Officer, HealthGarde International, Lovelyn Nwarueze, spoke on the importance of natural medicine usage, urging the Nigerians to prioritise their well-being by going for drugs made with 100 per cent natural products. “At Healthgarde, we offer over 25 products for wellness, weight loss, energy, a variety of teas, preventives and unique cosmetics, etc. We are the only global wellness enterprise and multilevel marketing company founded by an African woman, a Nigerian. All our high-grade products are made in Africa – not China or America – and our networks are spreading fast across Africa and the rest of the world,” she said.
