  • NDLEA seizes 146.820 kilogrammes drugs at Lagos Airport

    National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Command on Wednesday said it recorded a seizure of 146.820 kilogrammes of drugs from 33 suspected traffickers.

    The seizures were made between January and June this year.

    The NDLEA Airport Commander, Garba Ahmadu in a chat with newsmen in commemoration of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, said 28 males and five females were nabbed with various Illicit drugs carefully concealment in the different ways.

    These drugs include cocaine, methamphetamine, cannabis sativa , heroine and ephedrine.

    According to the NDLEA commander, the drugs were concealed in tomato cans, baby diapers, foodstuff, body lotion containers and ingestion.

    Giving a breakdown of the drugs, he said, “Cocaine 15.580 kg, heroin 14.720kg, cannabis sativa 54.140kg, methamphetamine 34.240kg and ephedrine 28.140.

    “We had three internal concealment that the ones that swallowed”.

    Speaking on cartels who plant drugs in passenger’s luggage in connivance with airline staff and ground handling staff, Ahmadu advised airlines to always deploy senior officials to airports for baggage tagging to avoid the Kano incident.

  • Harbour drug peddlers, risk increased criminality – NDLEA

    National Drug Laws Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has urged communities in Anambra state to identify and expose illicit drugs sellers and circulators in their areas to reduce the burden of drug abuse in the society.

    The Anambra state Commander, Sule Momodu gave the advice in Awka Monday during a programme organized by the Special Marshall Unit of the State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

    He warned against harbouring of illicit drugs peddlers, saying any community indulging in such acts stood the risk of attracting criminals.

    He said, “Harboring drug peddlers will only attract criminals and miscreants to your areas which will escalate insecurity including armed robbery, kidnapping, rape and other social vices that put communities under pressure.

    He insisted that the fight against illicit drugs should be a collective responsibility.

    According to Momodu, illicit drugs have adverse effects on the reproductive system as they could cause infertility and deformity of unborn child.

    He said, “Illicit drugs stimulate or depress the central nervous system thereby influencing the perception, thinking and reasoning of the individual and can also destroy vital body organs including the brain, kidney and liver among others as well as result to madness and sudden death.”

    The NDLEA helmsman urged parents to monitor their children and wards closely for signs of drug abuse, stressing that illicit drugs have multiplier effects on homes including wrecking marriages, derailing academic aspirations and low productivity in place of work.

    While regretting that drugs have no permanent solution to any problem, Momodu called for increased extracurricular activities in secondary schools to assist in keeping students busy.

    Earlier, the State Coordinator of the Unit, Bar. Ben Osaka, urged the participants to use the knowledge gained in the discharge of their duties.

  • Ganduje sends names of 36 newly appointed Perm Secs to NDLEA for drug test

    Kano State Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has forwarded the names  of the 36 newly appointed Permanent Secretaries to NDLEA to undergo drug test to establish their mental state of health, before assuming duties.

    The governor warned that any of the new appointees, who fails the test, would be dropped, adding that his administration has zero-tolerance for drugs.

    According to him, the measure was aimed at ensuring that only those with sound mental health were appointed to position of authority, to enable them offer quality and effective leadership to enable the state government  ascend to the next level of economic growth.

    The governor, who spoke in Kano yesterday, after the swearing-in of the 36 newly appointed Permanent Secretaries by the State Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General, Ibrahim Mukthar, urged the new Permanent Secretaries to focus on Internal Generated Revenue (IGR), so as to  be able to pay the N30,000 approved minimum wage to all civil servants.

    Also, the governor, advised the permanent secretaries to demonstrate leadership by example by being the first to resume and the last to depart, adding that they must avoid indiscipline, lateness and early closing from work.

    Reiterating that he is gender sensitive, Ganduje noted that of the 36 newly appointed permanent secretaries, 11 of them were females, which constitute 30 per cent of the appointees.

    He added that women are a lot more committed and focused than their male counterparts.

  • NDLEA nabs 32 drug suspects in Gombe

    The National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Gombe State said it arrested 32 drugs suspects and seized 16.82 kilogrammes of hard drugs between January and March, 2019.

    The Commandant of the agency in the state, Mr Aliyu Adole, made this known in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gombe on Friday.

    He said the suspects comprised 30 males and two females.

    Adole said that 18 of the suspects had been charged to court, adding that 16 were awaiting trials, while two had been convicted and serving their sentences.

    He said that the other suspects were “patients’’ currently being counselled for rehabilitation.

    Adole decried the use of Pentazocine injection by some youths in the state in the absence of Tramadol.

    “Some of the youths have become so addicted to drug and this has resulted to the damage of their hands which may no longer function well,” he said.

    The commandant, therefore, urged parents and guardians to counsel their children to stop the abuse of drugs because of the adverse effects.

  • NDLEA arrests 72-year old man, one other at Kano Airport

    • Over attempted drug trafficking

    The operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at Malam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA) have arrested a 72-year old man, Mohammed Hamza and Kamisu Mohammed (25) for attempting to ferry illicit drugs from Kano to Saudi Arabia.

    According to the MAKIA NDLEA Commander, Mr. Ambrose Umoru, Mohammed Hamza who hails from Gwaranduma village, Daura in Katsina State was arrested on April 24 at the screening point, while trying to board an aircraft to Saudi Arabia.

    He said further investigations which led to the arrest of Kamisu Mohammed, revealed that the 72-year old man, a stark illiterate was not aware that drugs were planted inside his luggage.

    “In fact, the drug peddlers told the old man that they were sponsoring him to perform lesser hajj in the Holy Land. They brought him to Kano from Katsina and lodged him in a hotel for three days during which they planted tramadol inside his luggage, unknown to him.

    “When our officers discovered the illicit drugs in his bag, upon interrogation, he told us where he was coming from. Immediately, we deployed our officers inside the town and Kamisu Mohammed was apprehended.”

    He added, “The interesting twist on this very case is that the same Kamisu Mohammed was arrested last year for planting drugs inside the luggage of two women, though the women were his partners in crime, unlike the 72-year old man who didn’t know why they were sending him to Saudi Arabia.

    “This very Kamisu is on bail over that very case of last year. To show that he is a serial criminal, this time when he was arrested, he tried to change his name, because the name he gave us last year was Kamisu Safiyanu; and this time he told us that his name is Kamisu Mohammed. He is still in our custody and will soon be re-arraigned in court.”

  • NDLEA arrests man with 32 sacks of Indian hemp

    The Cross River Command of the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a 50-year-old man, Marshal De-souza, for allegedly being in possession of 32 sacks of cannabis sativa (Indian hemp) in Calabar.

    The state Commander, Mrs Anthonia Edeh, disclosed this yesterday in a statement in Calabar.

    She said the suspect was arrested by the command’s motorised patrol team following intelligence report.

    Edeh said the suspect concealed the drugs under black polythene to ward-off suspicion by law enforcement agents.

    “The suspect and the exhibit were later brought to the office where the substance were tested and weighed 344.1kg and tested positive for cannabis sativa,’’ she said.

    She said the suspect had provided useful information to the command and had been charged to court accordingly.

    Edeh said the command was doing everything within its power to reduce the prevalence of illicit drug trafficking and abuse.

    “I appeal to the public to assist us with useful information and to stand against the efforts of criminals tarnishing the image of this state.

  • NDLEA nabs suspects with 2.927 kg of cocaine

    The Kano State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) says it has arrested two suspects in possession of 2.927 kilogrammes of cocaine.

    The NDLEA Commander in Kano, Dr. Ibrahim Abdul, who disclosed this while briefing reporters at the weekend in Kano, said the suspects were arrested in a hotel along Katsina Road in the city.

    According to Abdul, the arrest was first of its kind in the Kano Command, but similar to its recent discovery of a cannabis Sativa (Indian hemp) farm in the state.

    He said for over a month, the command had been tracking and monitoring movement of the suspects following intelligence report by its men.

    Abdul said they were arrested while swallowing the Cocaine, which was to be transported to Saudi Arabia en-route Sudan.

    The commander said the arrest was as a result of NDLEA’s current efforts towards ending drug abuse and trafficking.

    “An onslaught on the hard drug barons resulted in the arrest of two suspects, Abdul Abubakar and Ibrahim Mustapha and seizure of up to 2.927 kilogrammes of cocaine for the first time by the command,’’ he said.

    Abdul further explained that also this month, the command arrested four suspects in possession of a pistol on Kano-Gwarzo Road, on their way to Funtua, Katsina State.

    He added that during the month in review, NDLEA had dislodged 50 hotspots within and outside the metropolis, because of the command’s tireless efforts and fight against all forms of drug abuse.

    “Within the month of April, we succeeded in seizing 836.927 kilogrammes of exhibits, which include 9.927 cocaine, 250 kilogrammes of cannabis sativa, 560 kilograms of Tramadol, and also 24 kilogrammes of a drug imported from South Africa, known as Khat,’’ he said.

  • NDLEA nabs two with 2,927 kg of cocaine

    The Kano Command of the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested two suspects in possession of 2.927 kilograms of cocaine in the state. The NDLEA Commander in Kano, Dr. Ibrahim Abdul, who disclosed this while briefing newsmen on Saturday, said the suspects were arrested in a hotel along Katsina road in the city. He noted that, the arrest was first of its kind in the Kano Command similar to its recent discovery of an Indian hemp farm in the state for the first time also.

He added that the suspects were arrested while swallowing the cocaine to be transported to Sudan en route Saudi Arabia. Abdul said that the arrest was part of the command’s effort towards bringing to the end, the issues of drug abuse and trafficking in the state.

Abdul further explained that during the month, the command had arrested 4 suspects in possession of a pistol along Kano-Gwarzo road on their way to Funtua in Katsina State.

  • NDLEA arrests 818, seize 452.4kg of Cannabis in Katsina

    The Katsina State Branch of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, on Wednesday declared the arrest of 818 drug pushers as well seized 452.41kg of Cannabis Sativa, 26,099 bottles of Cough Syrups with codeine and 10,746 tablets of psychotropic substance during the year 2018

    The State Commander of the NDLEA, Hajia Maryam Gambo Sani who made the disclosure at the Official Commissioning of the Agency’s Rehabilitation and Counseling Center donated by the Katsina State Government, also disclosed that 104 out of the number arrested were convicted to various jail terms while 714 drug users were counseled

    She further maintained that in the first quarter of this year, her agency has so far made seizures of 66.12kg of CS, 15.7kg of psychotropic substances, 38 bottles cough syrup with codine and arrested 182 suspects while counseling 131 others

    The Commander further promised that her agency will put the new rehabilitation center to good use and ensure its maximum use.

    She said ’’In our tradition of discipline, diligence and prudence, this structure like others will be put to good use. We shall make maximum use of it for effective drug demand reduction as the center has the capacity to train clients in skills acquisition such as soap making, Knitting,Tailoring,Computer Training and handset Repairs’’

    ‘’Today is memorable to us as we close the three months of rehabilitation, counseling of  thirty female clients which was shouldered by her Excellency and the Ministry of Women Affairs’’

    She also assured that the program carried out at the center will be more enhanced with a robust a deliberate after care approach and also pointed out the need for those rehabilitated to  be engaged in further skills acquisition as three months training is insufficient for certain categories of trades

    Also speaking while commissioning the Center valued at N41m, the State Governor, Aminu Bello Masari who was represented by his Deputy, Alhaji Manir Yakubu, commended the NDLEA for their efforts to free the state from illicit drug consumption and abuse

    He recalled that since the inception of his administration in 2015,the state government have not relented in championing reduction in the activities of illicit drug peddling and consumption in the state, which he described as worrisome and an ugly development

    He said ’’the Counseling and Rehabilitation of 30 female clients by NDLEA in conjunction with the Ministry of women Affairs is a further demonstration of the significance of the center and the need for it to be kept functional’’

     

  • NDLEA arraigns suspected drug syndicate

     The National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) yesterday arraigned a drug syndicate at the Federal High Court in Lagos.

    The suspects were charged with conspiracy, unlawful production, storage and transportation of 309 kilograms of Ephedrine, a banned substance.

    They are Okeke Celestine, 36, Sunday Amobi, 38, Ilelabayo Oluwade,50, Eze Paul, 39, Ezeh Ikechukwu, 36, and Ike Samson.

    Prosecuting counsel Jonathan Ogwunbor said the defendants on March 19 conspired to import the banned substance from Ghana illegally.

    Celestine, Amobi, Ezeh and Samson were accused of engaging in the possession of equipment and material for the production of another banned substance, Methamphetamine.

    The alleged offence, according to Ogwubor, is contrary to and punishable under sections 14(b), 11(b), 11(a) 19, 20(1)(a) and 20(e) of the NDLEA Act of 2004.The defendants pleaded not guilty.

    Justice Saliu Saidu granted them bail for N30 million each with two sureties.

    One of the sureties must be a landed property owner within the court’s jurisdiction; the other must be a Federal or Lagos State government worker on Grade Level 15 and above.

    Justice Saidu also ordered that the defendants and their sureties must submit two recent passport photographs to the court.

    He directed the prosecutor and registrar to verify that the bail terms have been fulfilled.

    Justice Saidu adjourned till May 30 for trial.
