Cheick Tiote collapses, dies during training

Former Newcastle United player Cheick Tiote has died after collapsing during a training session on Monday.

The Ivorian was training with second-tier Chinese side Beijing Enterprises, who he joined in January, when he passed out and was rushed to hospital.

But emergency treatment failed to revive him, and it was later confirmed that he had passed away.

Tiote’s representative Emanuele Palladino said: “It is with deep sadness that I confirm that my client Cheick Tiote sadly passed away earlier today after collapsing in training with his club Beijing Enterprises.

“We cannot say any more at the moment and we request that his family’s privacy be respected at this difficult time.

“We ask for all your prayers.”

A statement from Beijing Enterprises also confirmed the news of Tiote’s death.

It read: “At 6pm on June 5th, Mr Cheick Tiote fell unconscious to the ground during training.

“He was immediately taken to hospital, but unfortunately died at 7pm on June 5th. We have informed his relatives of his death.”

Tiote had been a mainstay for Beijing Enterprises, starting all 11 matches to date this season.

On Saturday, the 30-year-old helped his team secure a 4-2 victory against Baoding Ronda.

The midfielder started his career in Belgium with Anderlecht and also represented Twente and Roda JC in the Netherlands, as well as making 52 international appearances for Ivory Coast.

  • Newcastle to reward Sammy Ameobi with new deal

Newcastle to reward Sammy Ameobi with new deal

Newcastle United is set to begin talks with Anglo – Nigerian striker, Sammy Ameobi, over the extension of his contract in the coming weeks.

Reports say the 22 – year – old could be rewarded with a fresh deal following his imperious displays for the Toon this season, especially in the Premier League.

The ex Flying Eagles trainee has recorded 11 appearances in the topflight in the 2014 – 2015 campaign, scoring once in the process, against Tottenham Hotspur in October, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.

The younger Ameobi has played nonstop at Newcastle United for the past six years, apart from a brief loan stint with Middlesbrough last season.

His current deal with Newcastle United expires on June 30, 2015.

  • Ameobi impresses for Newcastle

    Ameobi impresses for Newcastle

Former Nigeria Under-20 Invitee, Sammy Ameobi, won a second half penalty to help 10-man Newcastle United secure a 3-2 win over Crystal Palace in the Capital One Cup.

Ameobi presumably on his last chance with the Magpies, with his current deal set to run out at the end of this season, made a strong case for a contract extension as he was at the helm of most of Newcastle’s flowing moves for the 67 minutes he was on the pitch.

After they went a goal down, Ameobi’s interchange of passes with Adam Armstrong almost set up Emmanuel Riviere for the equaliser and minutes later his cross from the left was missed by a whisker by the new signing.

Less than two minutes after the half time break Ameobi took on Armstrong’s pass and surged into the area but was squeezed between two defenders, McCarthy tripped the wide man and referee Matt Madley awarded a penalty.

Riviere stepped up and confidently dispatched the ball high into roof of the net for his second of the night. Ameobi was replaced in the 67th minute by Moussa Sissoko as Newcastle aimed to seal the game at 2-1.

However, a late equaliser for Crystal Palace by Kakai in time added on ensured a nervy finish that saw Newcastle reduced to 10 men after Mehdi Abeid picked up his second yellow of the game. Paul Dummet scored the winner for Newscatle in the 112th minute during extra time.

The game was Ameobi’s first start of the season but his second game in a space of four days after coming on as a substitute in their weekend Premier league game.

Still eligible for Nigeria despite playing for England at Youth level, Ameobi has long voiced his desire to follow in the footstep of his elder brother Shola who played for Nigeria at the World Cup in June.

  • Newcastle 0-4 Tottenham: Adebayor’s brace ruins Magpies

Tottenham Hotspur cruised to a comfortable 4-0 win over Newcastle United as Emmanuel Adebayor scored a brace in their victory at St James’ Park.

Spurs had a great chance to open the scoring in the sixth minute when Davide Santon was robbed of the ball by Younes Kaboul who teed up Paulinho, but his effort was well saved by Tim Krul.

Newcastle responded to this early threat as Mathieu Debuchy lifted a cross to the back post where Luuk de Jong won a header, and turned it into the path of Papiss Cisse who failed to find the net from close range.

Cisse was punished for his miss as Spurs took the lead in the 18th minute when Nabil Bentaleb raided into the box and powered a low cross across the face of goal, which fell into the path of Adebayor who tapped the ball home.

Tottenham came close to adding a second goal as Aaron Lennon received the ball down the right and he cut inside onto his left foot and fired at goal, but his effort was tipped onto the post by Krul.

After the break, Spurs doubled their advantage when Paulinho teed up Adebayor on the edge of the area and his shot was well saved by Krul, but Paulinho was able to pounce on the rebound to slot his effort into the net.

  • Newcastle´s off-field changes will not distract me — Ameobi

Newcastle´s off-field changes will not distract me — Ameobi

Newcastle United’s players are not letting off-field changes distract them from their preparations to face Chelsea, says Super Eagles ace, Shola Ameobi.

After their derby defeat to Sunderland last weekend, Joe Kinnear resigned as the club’s director of football, but Ameobi insists the players are focused on bouncing back in the Premier League.

They travel to Stamford Bridge on Saturday – where Chelsea have never lost a league game under Jose Mourinho.

Defeat at St James’ Park to their fierce rivals left Alan Pardew’s side eighth in the table, but with only one league win in their last six matches Ameobi wants the squad to concentrate.

“As players, you just concentrate on your job,” he told Sky Sports.

“In football, there are a lot of different aspects to it. As players, ultimately what we have got to do is concentrate on what we do as a group of guys on the pitch and try and implement what the coaching staff want us to do.

“That’s our focus, that’s always been the player’s focus.

“Obviously, a lot of things have been said outside of that, but you just have to remember what we are here for and that’s to win games of football, and that’s what we’ll do this week.”

  • Shola Ameobi’s younger brother backs him to ‘break duck’

Shola Ameobi’s younger brother backs him to ‘break duck’

Newcastle United youngster, Sammy Ameobi has thrown his weight behind big brother Shola Ameobi to soon end his goal drought in the English Premier League.

MTNFootball.com reports that the Nigeria international striker’s only goal this season was against Morecambe in the Capital One Cup.

Ameobi – who has been keeping Papiss Demba Cisse out of the starting XI in recent weeks – has ably supported leading scorer Loic Remy up front.

But the long-serving player has admitted to “frustration” at his lack of goals.

And his younger brother Sammy – who is patiently waiting for his chance – doesn’t think it will be long before the Nigeria international is among the goals.

“Everyone here knows he’s a top professional,” Sammy said.

“He’s going to keep striving. He’s playing well at the moment. I’m very proud of him.

“Hopefully, he can get some goals into his game.”

Sixth-placed Newcastle, held to a 1-1 draw by Southampton at the weekend, face third-from-bottom Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The Palace has won two home games under new manager Tony Pulis, and Ameobi Jnr is adamant that there will be no complacency in the United dressing room at Selhurst Park.

“We’re not going to under-estimate anyone,” said the 21-year-old.

“Hopefully, we can go and get some good results leading up to Christmas.”

  • World Cup playoffs biggest test for Eagles – Ameobi

World Cup playoffs biggest test for Eagles – Ameobi

Newcastle United striker, Shola Ameobi, has said next month’s final 2014 World Cup playoffs will be a big test for Nigeria.

The African champions qualified for the 10-team qualifying series to be played on knockout basis in October and November after defeating Malawi 2-0 at the weekend.

MTNFootball.com reports that the top five rated teams in Africa in Thursday’s FIFA rankings will be seeded for the draw, which will be staged in Cairo, Egypt, on Monday afternoon.

“The big test for us will be in the playoffs and we have to show how far we have come here,” said Ameobi, who made his debut as a late substitute on Saturday.

The striker is delighted that he is now a full Nigerian international after he represented England at various age-group levels.

“It’s a joy to play at the world stage. The coach and the lads have been very welcoming,” he said.

Ameobi said he hopes his English Premier League side finish the new season at the top half of the table after flirting with relegation last term.

“Last season was a gruelling season and this wore on our thin squad, but we hope to finish in the top half of the table this campaign. We did that two years ago and there is no reason why we should not do that again,” he said.

His personal target with The Magpies this season is to get more game time and score more goals.

“I want to play more games, give everything I have got and score as many goals as possible,” declared the experienced striker, who is in line to start against Burkina Faso in Tuesday’s friendly in Kaduna.

  • SHOLA AMEOBI: Lessons my parents taught me

SHOLA AMEOBI: Lessons my parents taught me

NEWCASTLE Nigerian attacker, Shola Ameobi, is generally a shy fellow. And he likes to keep his family, intimate life and privacy really private.

So cloistered is the 31-year-old player that he seldom joins his teammates in local pubs to celebrate after victories.

For example, until last April, when Shola missed a Premiership match against Manchester City to be with his wife, Jennifer, who put to bed their first child, not even his coach Alan Pardew knew he was married.

Pardew confirmed this fact when he said about Shola: “In these days of intense media speculation and of course social media, I find it quite revealing that a player like Shola can still have a private life if he chooses, I didn’t even know he was married yet alone due to introduce another Ameobi into the football world.”

Ameobi’s austere lifestyle may not be unconnected with his parentage, which is of a humble and devoted Christian home.

So, if there is one thing the gangling 32-year-old forward would not tire talking about, it is his parents’ inspirational role and model to mould him to inspire his siblings and new generations of Ameobis in character and aspirations.

The second child in a family of eight, (three sisters and two brothers) Shola religiously focuses on whatever he sets his minds on, stirs his brothers Sammy and Tomi as well as younger sister, Titi, to thrive to excel in their athletic callings.

Sammy has followed in his brother’s footstep at Newcastle where he has established himself fully. Tomi, 24, who scored on his debut for Icelandic club Bolungarvik in May 2011 is not doing badly either, while Titi, 28, has also made name for herself as a talented runner.

Shola says he became focused to be a successful footballer at a tender age of 8, because of his parents’ unrelenting quest and dedication to making them somebody in life.

He recalls: “l remember when we just arrived from Nigeria and there was just me and my three sisters then. My mum was the only one allowed to work, because my dad’s visa didn’t let him. She had a part-time job and we all had to live on what she earned, which was only £15 a week. But we never felt we were lacking anything. Yeah. It was around the winter and my dad bought us each a duffel coat and we even used to sleep in them. That first winter we never took them off.”

So focused was Shola that right from primary school, he set himself brainpower to becoming a successful footballer. “I used to tell my mother that l was going to be a footballer. Right from primary school, l said, ‘I’m going to be a footballer.’”

Today, John Ameobi (Shola’s father) is pastor of Newcastle Apostolic Church in the Spital Tongues area of the city, and his mum, Margaret, 62, is a nurse who works at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary and Freeman Hospitals.

A devoted Christian teacher, John’s faith has also rubbed off on his oldest son: “That has kept me going,” says Shola. “I’m doing what I love: playing football, but it’s second to my faith. When I had a career-threatening hip injury seven years ago, it was touch and go for a while. It was a terrible time, but I felt God was going to see me through, and He did. It also helped when the club got relegated. That was a terrible time for the city, but in the end it’s done us a world of good, bringing us all together. And now that all those big names have moved on, that’s really bonded us, too, as a team. We work for each other and that epitomises the city, a city of people who work hard and want to see a team who do the same.”

Shola notes that he will be eternally grateful to respected manager, late Bobby Robson, who set him on the path of glory. “I owe everything to Sir Bobby Robson. He really was another father figure, and I was in contact with him even just before he died. He taught me things on and off the pitch, like not getting carried away with all the trappings. And his enthusiasm rubbed off on me. Every day he was the first through the door and the last out, at his age. He had all the money he could ever want, but his hunger for the game shone through. I took all that on board.”

Shola recalls his life-changing encounter with Robson when he was 18. “I was 18 years old, preparing for a youth-team match at Durham. The first team were training at Chester-le-Street, and one of the security guys came down and spoke to the coach, who called me over. I thought I was in trouble, but he told me I was needed at Chester-le-Street. It turned out Sir Bobby Robson had been watching me play. He said to me, ‘You’re going to train with us this morning.’ Then he said, ‘I’m going to put you on the bench tomorrow.’ I thought I was going to explode. I just didn’t know what to say to him. I was in shock. At St James’ Park the following day, I came on against Chelsea with 20 minutes to go. That blew my mind.”

Ameobi also stressed how much his fatherland, Nigeria, means to him: “I want to do the best that I can for Nigeria. I don’t just want to be a local hero; I want to be an international one. That’s what has driven my decision to play for the country of my birth. Nigeria is where I’m from, that’s my heritage and I’ve never forgotten my roots. The majority of my family are from Nigeria and they’re really excited about this. My parents are really, really happy but they would have supported me either way. It’s a case of better late than never. It’s a great honour to play for Nigeria and I don’t take it lightly. It’s something that I’ve wanted to do and I’m really, really happy that I’ve got the opportunity to do it now.”

No wonder Stephen Keshi calls him a leading light in Super Eagles and how much he missed him at the last Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.

Short and sharp with Shola Ameobi

    Cars

I drive a BMW but I like walking. Not just to keep fit  I enjoy it.

    Music

R&B and hip-hop. Destiny’s Child. I like all the hip-hop bands, y’know, and rap stuff. R&B seems to be the in-thing for footballers at the moment.

Nickname: People just call me Shola  I’m happy about that.

    Club supported:

Obviously, Newcastle. I’ve also always supported Liverpool as well. Ever since I was young I’ve liked the way Liverpool play.

    Position:

I haven’t always been a striker. I used to be a midfielder as well in the youth team. I was used as a midfielder in my first year and a striker in my second, so I like playing both positions. I played in midfield for my school as well. I don’t really prefer either one, just as long as I’m playing.

    Strengths:

Firstly, none of this would have come about if it wasn’t for God, you know? I’m a Christian. The other thing is hard work  I always try my best. My ball skills, I think, are my main strengths, and I’ve got quite a bit of pace.

    Weaknesses:

My heading. I’m working on that a lot at the moment, so hopefully that will improve.

    Heroes:

Ian Wright, Alan Shearer, Ian Rush, John Barnes, Peter Beardsley  a lot of Liverpool players. I guess l watched a lot of them while growing up and promised myself l want to grow up to play like them or even better.

  • CUP OF NATIONS SHOCKER Finally, Newcastle stop Ameobi

CUP OF NATIONS SHOCKER Finally, Newcastle stop Ameobi

Sportinglife can reveal exclusively that Super Eagles will be without the services of Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi during the country’s 2013 Africa Cup of Nations matches beginning with the tie against Burkina Faso on January 21.

SportingLife’s checks on Newcastle’s portal on Sunday showed that: “Now Sky Sports are claiming a final conclusion, reporting that Alan Pardew has announced that Shola definitely won’t be going.

“Whether Nigeria will try and do anything through FIFA is another matter but hopefully this has put an end to a saga which could have seen Newcastle deprived of their supersub for what could be a very tricky 4-6 weeks, with Cheick Tiote probably playing his last match on Wednesday before he heads off for the tournament.

“We all wait to see what the outcome of the transfer window will be and while I’d love to see Newcastle retain Demba Ba AND bring in another quality striker, it would take a brave man to bet on Shola not being third choice striker at the very least, when the window eventually closes,” the report on Newcastle’s website read on Sunday.

AFCON: NFF dismisses Newcastle’s claim on Ameobi

The Nigeria Football Federation has debunked a claim by Newcastle that Shola Ameobi will skip next month’s African Cup of Nations and that coach Stephen Keshi is aware of this.

“We are not aware of such a thing about Shola (Ameobi), he is a FIFA-listed player for us. The federation is not aware, the head coach is not aware of this and that was why Shola was called up for the competition.

“We will do all within us to see that Shola or any player picked by the coach for the Nations Cup is released to us,” spokesman for the NFF, Ademola Olajire, told MTNFootball.com.

Newcastle United manager, Alan Pardew, said Shola Ameobi will not be going to the Nations Cup with Nigeria, according to BBC sports.

The Kogi State indigene is on the 32-man provisional squad released by Keshi last week.

Pardew said: “Shola won’t be going. The national team manager knows the reasons, which I am keeping to myself.”

Ameobi made an encouraging debut in a 3-1 friendly win over Venezuela last month, setting up the third goal in Miami.
