Newcastle beat Spurs on penalties in Melbourne friendly

Newcastle beat Tottenham 5-4 on penalties in a post-season friendly in Australia – just three days after the Premier League ended.

The timing of the match, which was played in front of 78,419 fans at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and finished 1-1 after normal time, had been called “madness” by former England and Newcastle striker Alan Shearer.

It went ahead despite concerns about the increasing workload being faced by players.

England midfielder James Maddison scored the 32nd-minute opener for Spurs, taking advantage of a poor pass by Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope and then weaving past the Magpies defence and smashing into the top corner.

Swedish striker Alexander Isak levelled from close range just before half-time.

The game then went straight to penalties with Bryan Gil missing Spurs’ first spot-kick – and the only one as the remaining nine were converted.

Right-back Harrison Ashby, who spent last season on loan at Swansea, struck the winning penalty for Newcastle.

Both clubs named strong squads for the trip with England defender Kieran Trippier, Brazil midfielder Bruno Guimaraes and Isak in the Newcastle starting line-up, while Maddison, Dutch defender Micky van de Ven and South Korea captain Son Heung-min in the Spurs ranks.

Trippier, who like Maddison is in England’s provisional Euro 2024 squad, came off after 36 minutes, which Newcastle said was “pre-planned”.

Speaking before the match, boss Eddie Howe said it was an opportunity to “grow the name of Newcastle”.

While Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou accepted the “exposure and revenue” was a key element of the long trip, he acknowledged had his side been in Europe this season he would have blocked it.

Newcastle will also play a second match against an A-League All Star side on Friday.

This summer has the European Championships in Germany, which start on 14 June, while the Copa America gets under way in the United States six days later.

Isak has 21 goals in 34 games in all competitions this season.

Alexander Isak’s rich goalscoring form at St James’ Park continued as Newcastle beat Tottenham to boost their hopes of European football next season.

Isak produced two clinical finishes to score in each half as he netted on home turf for the sixth consecutive match.

The striker now has 17 goals in 24 Premier League appearances this season.

Anthony Gordan and Fabian Schar were also on target for the Magpies, while Timo Werner had two chances for Spurs but his finishing let him down.

Substitute Harvey Barnes scored two late goals as Newcastle edged a seven-goal thriller against West Ham at St James’ Park.

Newcastle made the perfect start when Anthony Gordon won a penalty with just three minutes played and Alexander Isak converted from 12 yards after a lengthy check by the video assistant referee (VAR).

But the game started to get away from the Magpies when West Ham scored three unanswered goals.

Michail Antonio brought the Hammers on to level terms before Mohammed Kudus and Jarrod Bowen scored within minutes either side of half-time.

Isak scored his second penalty of the afternoon after Gordon was again adjudged to have been fouled and Barnes grabbed the equaliser in the 83rd minute.

With momentum and a vociferous St James’ Park firmly behind them, Newcastle pressed on and Barnes emphatically fired in a 90th-minute winner.

There was further drama to come in injury time as Newcastle were reduced to 10 men when Gordon received a second yellow card for kicking the ball away, but they managed to hold out for a victory that could prove vital in their pursuit of European football.

Goals from Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon and Tino Livramento helped Newcastle overcome Wolves and register their first home win in the Premier League since mid-December.

Sweden international Isak nodded in at the end of a sweeping counter-attack involving Gordon and Bruno Guimaraes, whose left-footed shot deflected off Craig Dawson and into the striker’s path.

Eddie Howe’s team doubled their advantage when Jose Sa and Max Kilman failed to deal with Jacob Murphy’s low cross and Gordon pounced on the loose ball to fire home.

Wolves had the lion’s share of possession at St James’ Park but failed to test Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka until midway through the second half, when half-time substitute Nathan Fraser’s low shot from the edge of the box was palmed clear.

Dubravka produced a superb stop to deny Pablo Sarabia moments later, but Livramento bundled home his first Newcastle goal in stoppage time to put the seal on the Magpies’ first home victory since their 3-0 win over Fulham on 16 December.

The victory lifted Newcastle up to eighth in the table, while Wolves dropped to 10th.

Newcastle striker Callum Wilson has had chest surgery and could miss much of the rest of the season.

The England international, 31, sustained a pectoral muscle injury in the 3-2 Premier League win at Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

He has scored eight goals in 22 games in all competitions for Newcastle this season, but has been hampered by hamstring and calf problems.

“It is no doubt a big blow for him,” said Newcastle manager Eddie Howe.

“It’s been a stop-start season for him. We hope he’s back before the end of the season.”

Wilson completed the game against Forest but used his shirt to make a sling at full-time.

“It was a strange injury. He got in a tussle with the center-back at the end of the last match,” said Howe.

“We had it scanned and hoped initially he could continue, but when he went to see a specialist I think it was apparent quite early that he needed it operating on.”

Substitute Harvey Barnes marked his return from a long injury with a goal to rescue a point for Newcastle in an extraordinary eight-goal thriller against Luton.

In a breathless encounter, Sean Longstaff swept the hosts into the lead only for defender Gabriel Osho to head an equaliser off the underside of the bar.

The Hatters, however, were on level terms for just two minutes as Longstaff restored Newcastle’s advantage after Thomas Kaminski parried Anthony Gordon’s attempt into his path.

But Luton were far from done and equalised a second time before half-time, Ross Barkley firing home from five yards after the ball dropped invitingly at his feet following Martin Dubravka’s save to keep out Alfie Doughty.

The visitors went ahead for the first time when skipper Carlton Morris scored from a retaken penalty after a review by the video assistant referee (VAR) ruled Dan Burn had fouled the impressive Chiedozie Ogbene.

It looked all over when Elijah Adebayo made it 4-2 less than two minutes later, but Kieran Tripper’s first goal since August 2022 gave the Magpies hope before Barnes, in his first appearance since 24 September, drilled home to make it 4-4.

In one of the all-time great games of the Premier League era, Jacob Murphy missed a great chance to win it for Newcastle when he blazed over in the 85th minute.

Boxing Day Special :Newcastle ‘desperate’ for redemption after Luton loss

The Christmas-week Premier League fixtures may not be popular with some managers, but Newcastle United’s Eddie Howe cannot wait to play on Boxing Day.

A 1-0 loss at 18th -placed Luton Town on Saturday left Howe yearning for  today’s home game against Nottingham Forest.

“We are desperate for another fixture very quickly to try and put this game to the back of our minds,” he told reporters.

Seventh-placed Newcastle have won their last seven league games at home, beating defending champions Manchester City, leaders Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea.

But that was not the only reason behind Howe looking forward to the St James’ Park fixture.

“The festive games have always been very enjoyable. I loved them as a player. I loved playing at Christmas,” he said. “Managing, it’s the same. I think they are slightly different games. I think the atmosphere is always very strong.

“We’ve got to show the right attitude… play the game as we know we can, and hopefully the supporters will do the rest,” he added.

Howe cautioned against underestimating 17th -placed Nottingham Forest under newly-appointed manager Nuno Espirito Santo.

“Whenever you play a team that’s changed manager I think there’s always an interesting dynamic because of changes, potential changes tactically,” he said.

Newcastle have had bad results in December including exits from Champions League and League Cup, as their streak of losing away matches in the league grew to five.

Champions League: Newcastle brace for  stiff test against Milan

Eddie Howe is hoping for a “magical European night” as Newcastle try to reach the last 16 of the Champions League on Wednesday.

Newcastle must win at home to AC Milan and they might have to play without goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, who is an injury doubt.

Even victory over the Italian giants may not be enough for the Magpies to remain in Europe’s elite club competition as they would still drop into the Europa League should Paris Saint-Germain win at Borussia Dortmund.

Defeat, meanwhile, would ensure Newcastle finished bottom of Group F, which would represent a hugely disappointing return from a campaign that featured an impressive 4-1 defeat of Paris Saint-Germain.

Newcastle manager Howe, having guided the northeast side into the Champions League for the first time in 20 years, said he was not ready for his side’s time in the tournament to come to an end.

“I’ve really enjoyed the Champions League,” Howe told a pre-match news conference. “My only frustration is that we have not had the freedom to attack the competition as we would have liked to have done (because of injuries).

“That’s my only feeling that I’m left with that is negative.”

The former Bournemouth boss added: “The tournament itself is special, the places we have been are incredible, the stadiums, the atmospheres and the experiences we have had at home have all been memorable.

“We have one more game to go and we have to make this as memorable as possible.

“My message to the fans is to make this a magical European night. They can only do so much, we have to do our bit to make it that.”

Sandro Tonali’s 10-month suspension and a series of injuries have hampered Newcastle’s progress in the Champions League and they could now be without Dubravka at St James’ Park on Wednesday.

The Slovakia international has started the last two league games in place of Nick Pope, who dislocated his shoulder during the 1-0 win over Manchester United on December 2.

Dubravka, however, did not train on Tuesday with Loris Karius, who suffered an error-strewn display playing for Liverpool in the 2018 Champions League final, on standby.

Howe said it was “slightly unclear” if 34-year-old Dubravka would be fit.

Meanwhile striker Callum Wilson, who returned from injury as a substitute during Sunday’s 4-1 loss away to Tottenham in the Premier League, said there would be no better time than Wednesday to score his first goal in the Champions League.

“I personally believe it hasn’t come yet because it’s waiting for a special moment to happen, and what a story it would be if it’s the winning goal tomorrow night,” he said.

The 31-year-old England forward, who suffered a hamstring injury during the 2-0 defeat at Borussia Dortmund on November 7, added: “We will leave blood, sweat and tears out there. It’s what we do every time we step over the white line and for us as a football club, it’s about having no regrets.”

Second-Half goals from Jamaal Lascelles, Joelinton and Anthony Gordon meant Newcastle returned to winning ways in the Premier League in emphatic fashion against Chelsea at St James’ Park.

Lascelles’ free header from Gordon’s cross gave the Magpies a 2-1 lead on the hour mark before Joelinton capitalized on a Thiago Silva error to double the hosts’ advantage just 90 seconds later.

Gordon netted his fifth of the season with seven minutes remaining to put the seal on a comprehensive victory for Newcastle, who lost at Bournemouth in their previous match.
