    Chelsea enjoyed a triumphant return to the UEFA Champions League after a year out on Tuesday, thumping the competition’s debutants Qarabag 6-0, including a stunning, if miscued, strike from new signing Davide Zappacosta.

    The Azeri champions were never any match for their English counterparts and it took only five minutes for Pedro to open the scoring with a curling shot from the edge of the area.

    Deadline-day signing Zappacosta, apparently looking to cross the ball, produced a swirling screamer of a goal from some 35 metres out on the half hour.

    Chelsea ran riot in the second half, with goals from defender Cesar Azpilicueta, new French signing Tiemoue Bakayoko and two from Michy Batshuayi rounding off an impressive display against the Group C underdogs.

    In other UEFA Champions League matches also played on Tuesday, Romelu Lukaku opened his Champions League account as Manchester United marked their return to the competition with a 3-0 rout of Basle in their opening Group A match at Old Trafford.

    A mesmeric Lionel Messi scored twice and inspired Barcelona to a 3-0 win over Juventus as the Catalans got off to a flying start in Champions League Group D.

    It was a sweet revenge for Barcelona following their last season’s quarterfinal elimination by the Italian champions.

    Also, Paris Saint Germain flexed their attacking muscles with a 5-0 victory at Celtic in their opening Champions League Group B game on Tuesday as the world’s most expensive frontline produced a potent display of force.

    Neymar, making his first European appearance for PSG after his world-record move from Barcelona,scored first in the 19th minute. He was joined on the scoresheet by Kylian Mbappe and Edinson Cavani, the other two members of PSG’s expensive forward trio.

    Neymar, the world’s most expensive footballer, may have to wait until after Paris Saint-Germain’s trip to Guingamp on Sunday to make his debut for the club.

    Brazil international Neymar’s world-record €222 million move went through last week and he was unveiled at the Parc des Princes before Saturday’s Ligue 1 win over Amiens.

    But he was unable to make his PSG debut that day because his international transfer certificate had not been received by the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) from Spain’s La Liga.

    L’Equipe reported that the LFP had still not received the paperwork on Monday.

    That means it is possible it may not arrive in time for Neymar to play at Guingamp, with the 25-year-old postentially having to wait until Toulouse visit Paris the following weekend.

    L’Equipe reported that the Spanish FA (RFEF) have 15 days from Aug. 3, when Neymar joined PSG, to send the documentation to Liga officials for forwarding to France.

    If that does not happen by midnight on Aug. 18, world football’s governing body FIFA would be required to get involved.

    Le Parisien reported that FIFA could be called upon as soon as Thursday — one week after Neymar’s arrival — and that could delay the issue by an extra 10 days.

    Reports in both France and Spain have suggested that the delay is coming from the Spanish side.

    When contacted by ESPN FC, La Liga said “it is the RFEF’s responsibility to send the papers” before they can be forwarded.

    ESPN FC requested comment from the RFEF and the LFP, but neither has so far responded.

You also need to be able to focus, work hard, and be consistent, as natural talent alone is not enough to elevate you to that level. If you understand that, and you have the raw talent, then you can compete at that level.

    I’d say the player whose style most resembles mine would be Neymar. That’s because I played with a sense of joy and you can see that he feels the same and really enjoys his own play. He doesn’t play for himself or just to entertain the fans – he plays for his team. He uses his quality and skill for the good of the team.

    Do you see him as a future successor to Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi?

    Yes, I think he will be the one to do it. Messi and Ronaldo have dominated world football for a decade and, given the nature of football, at a certain point, the baton will have to pass to someone else. I think Neymar has a great chance of filling that role.

    Ronaldo and Messi have the shared the glory over the last decade, but do you favour one over the other?

    I have to be diplomatic here, especially as I’ve a lot of Portuguese friends, but I tend to lean towards Messi. He’s a more natural talent. Ronaldo is a fantastic player, one of the best I’ve ever seen, but he’s been a bit unfortunate to be of the same generation as Messi. Consequently, they have to share the limelight.

    Can you think of an African player with a chance of being among the final three for The Best FIFA Men’s Player Award?

    It’s hard to name one at present. If you’re talking about the top tier of players internationally, we don’t consider ourselves good enough to compete at that level. We have to change that attitude, and then we’ll be able to produce a player of the stature of the other top guys.

    Neymar watched from the stands as Paris Saint-Germain battled to a 2-0 victory over newly promoted Amiens in their Ligue 1 opener at the Parc des Princes.

    World-record signing Neymar was presented to supporters prior to the match amid a party atmosphere and sat alongside his father.

    Adrien Rabiot headed against the woodwork for PSG, before Edinson Cavani scored the opener shortly before half-time, converting Dani Alves’ cross.

    PSG took their time to put the result beyond doubt, but Javier Pastore’s late clincher ensured they joined defending champions Monaco in starting with a victory as Amiens, playing their first-ever Ligue 1 game after winning back-to-back promotions, offered little attacking threat.

    The hosts started on top and created good early opportunities without testing away goalkeeper Regis Gurtner.

    From a clever corner routine, Dani Alves’ shot deflected into the path of Rabiot, who could only send his header against the angle of post and bar from a yard out.

    After Rabiot had finally tested Gurtner for the first time, PSG moved in front three minutes before the break.

    Alves was the creator, crossing for Cavani from the right, with the striker turning defender Prince-Desir Gouano and finding the corner with a low left-footed finish from eight yards, bringing an applauding Neymar to his feet.

    After PSG brought on Presnel Kimpembe for an injured Thiago Silva at half-time, Di Maria’s volley was kept out by Gurtner in the first chance of the second half.

    Di Maria should have scored soon after, but he chipped wide after being slipped through on goal by Cavani.

    Amiens’ only attempt on target came after the hour mark, Seybou Koita forcing a save from Alphonse Areola, but PSG were always looking comfortable despite their narrow lead.

    Cavani then shot straight at Gurtner from Pastore’s pass as PSG looked to make sure of the three points.

    And victory was finally sealed with 10 minutes remaining, Marco Verratti’s throughball releasing Cavani, who squared for Pastore – the man who vacated the number 10 shirt for Neymar – to fire home.

    Neymar has been unveiled by new club Paris Saint-Germain following his world-record £198million move, saying he wanted a ‘new challenge’.

    The Brazil striker has swapped Barcelona for Paris in a record-smashing deal – he cost over £100m more than the previous most expensive transfer – and has signed a £500,000-a-week, five-year contract.

    Neymar said he had not been sure over his future for a long time but had been convinced to move by the other Brazilian players at PSG. He also said he had not moved in order to be the biggest star at the club, although he did not give an exact reason for wanting to leave Barcelona.

    At a press conference held on Friday, Neymar said: ‘The club has a very similar ambition to mine, I want a bigger challenge. My heart made this decision, that is why I am in front of you today to help this team.

    ‘Being a star did not impact my decision, it is down to me wanting to find a new challenge. I am looking for something new. This is what PSG want, and they deserve it.

    ‘I leave a lot of very good friends behind, but that’s football. You make friends wherever you go, and that’s the main thing. It was the right time to leave and look for something different. Being the most expensive player is not a burden, I am happy.

    ‘I spoke with Brazilian players here at PSG, and they were happy for me to be here. I feel like I am at home already.’

    Neymar said he was saddened by criticism from some Barca fans after deciding to leave and that while he respected the Catalan giants he had the right to seek a new challenge.

    ‘Two days ago I informed the coach, he was the first to know, I respect the club and the coach,’ he said. ‘I am very happy with my decision, I am excited.

    ‘I’ve done nothing bad, I never lack respect to the fans, I think every player should be allowed to stay or leave a club. When a player thinks it is right to leave, they should be able to leave.’

    Neymar also said he was motivated by playing for the PSG ‘project’, rather than being tempted by any individual players, which he was when he joined Barca from Santos.

    ‘I signed for Barcelona and one of the main things was to play with (Lionel) Messi,’ he said. ‘Here it is the club, the PSG project, all the members of the team.

    Barcelona have confirmed they will not pay a €26million loyalty bonus to Neymar and his father after accusing the player of breaching his contract with the club.

    The Brazil star completed a world-record move to Paris Saint-Germain on Thursday after his release clause of €222m was paid in full.

    It was reported that Neymar’s father and agent held up the deal in order to trigger a loyalty payment that would be owed after July 31, as part of the new contract the player signed with Barca last October.

    However, Barca spokesperson Josep Vives says Neymar’s talks with PSG meant he was in breach of the terms of that agreement and that the fee, reportedly totalling €26m, would not be released.

    “The cheque is no longer with the notary, it’s at the club,” Vives told a news conference.

    “There were three conditions: one, that the player does not negotiate with another club in the last three months before July 31.

    “Two, that he will express publicly his commitment to fulfil his contract.

    “Three, the collection was to be made on September 1, to ensure that he did not go to another club.

    “Given these breaches, the club is not going to liquidate the cheque for his renewal.”

    Barca had stated on Wednesday that the fee would initially “remain deposited with a notary until the case is resolved”.

    Neymar completed his record-shattering transfer from Barcelona to Paris St Germain on Thursday, signing a five-year deal with the French club after they triggered his 222 million euros (263 million dollars) release clause.

    The 25-year-old Brazil forward, who will be presented to fans on Saturday, is committed to PSG until June 2022, the club said in a statement. Media reports have said he could earn around 550,000 euros per week.

    “Today, with the arrival of Neymar Jr, I am convinced that we will come even closer, with the support of our faithful fans, to realizing our greatest dreams,” said PSG President Nasser Al-Khelaifi.

    Both Barcelona and Spain’s La Liga questioned whether the move complied with UEFA’s financial regulations, with the club saying they would report the deal to European football’s governing body.

    The transfer doubles the previous world record fee paid when Paul Pogba moved last August from Juventus to Manchester United for a 105 million euros.

    With the Spanish giants certain to be in the market for a replacement for the Brazilian forward – and with a hefty budget to invest – the Neymar move could set off a chain reaction of deals at top clubs across Europe.

    Neymar said he was looking forward to delivering trophies for the French club.

    “I am extremely happy to join Paris St Germain,” he said in the club’s statement.

    “Since I arrived in Europe, the club has always been one of the most competitive and most ambitious.

    “And the biggest challenge, what most motivated me to join my new team mates is to help the club to conquer the titles that their fans want.

    “From today, I will do everything I can to help my new team mates, to open up new horizons for my club and to bring happiness to its millions of supporters around the world,” he said.

    Barcelona said on Thursday that Neymar’s release clause had been paid.

    Barca said in a statement on their website (www.barcelona.com) that Neymar’s legal representatives “visited in person the club’s offices and made the payment of 222 million euros…”

    The five-times European champions said they would pass on details of the operation to European soccer body UEFA “so that they can determine the disciplinary responsibilities that may arise from this case.”

    Barcelona did not specify why they believed there may be a disciplinary issue relating to the deal.

    Javier Tebas, head of La Liga had earlier said that PSG were engaged in “financial doping” and the Spanish body would also complain to UEFA.

    Tebas referred to PSG, who are owned by Qatari Sports Investments, as a “state backed club”.

    UEFA, whose financial fair play rules ban clubs from spending more than their generated revenue, declined to comment but a spokesman noted that international transfers are within the remit of global governing body FIFA.

    A source from Spain’s La Liga said earlier on Thursday that the league had rejected the payment of the clause to them after Neymar’s lawyers visited its headquarters in Madrid to try to settle the transfer and pay the fee.

    Neymar continues to give Barcelona the runaround with reports from sources close to the player on Tuesday suggesting he was heading back to Brazil to think about his future.
    The player’s latest Instagram posts suggest otherwise with the 25-year-old on a flight out of Dubai and due to arrive in Catalonia on Tuesday evening.
    Relations between the player and the club are at an all-time low after Barcelona withheld a payment to Neymar Senior on Monday.
    Now with Barcelona due to resume training on Wednesday and coach Ernesto Valverde – still reeling from having to send Neymar to the showers last week after he scrapped with Nelson Semedo – Neymar still has the club in the dark over his intentions.
    On Monday, Neymar Senior was due a payment of 25m euros (£22.4million) for his part in Neymar’s contract renewal last October.
    Some at the club believe the player’s departure dragged on through the summer tour in the U.S. precisely because Neymar’s father suspected the payment would be blocked if his son moved before.
    Barcelona briefed at the start of the week that they had deposited the money with a lawyer in the city and that it would only be released to Neymar Snr if Neymar stayed at the club.
    If Neymar joins PSG then Barca would seek legal advice in a bid to pay just a fraction of the sum on the basis that the Brazilian’s renewal was for five years and he will only have stayed for one year of those five.
    Mundo Deportivo published a story on Tuesday morning suggesting that Neymar was set to fly to Brazil, missing training in Barcelona, and trying to force the club to pay his father what he believes he is owed, and to sit down with PSG and thrash out the sale of the century before the French season starts this weekend.
    Now it appears he is heading back to work with his current employer as the saga rumbles on.
    Neymar appeared to have moved a step closer to finalising his £196m move to Paris Saint-Germain as the Brazilian arrived in the Middle East ahead of a potential medical.
    The unsettled Barcelona star left Asia, where he was taking part in sponsorship responsibilities, and flew to Dubai.
    He looked cool, calm and collected as he posed for a picture while he dined out with his friends.
    Neymar sang lyrics to Thiaguinho’s ‘Energia Surreal’ as he was in a jovial mood with his close companions – including Jo Amancio and Alvaro Costa.

    Former Barcelona star Ronaldinho has encouraged Neymar to “follow his heart” amid speculation over a move to Paris Saint-Germain.

    The latest reports in France suggest the Brazil star could finalise a move to the Ligue 1 side as early as Monday of next week after agreeing terms over a world-record €222million transfer.

    Barca players including captain Andres Iniesta, striker Luis Suarez and defender Gerard Pique have publicly urged Neymar to stay at Camp Nou, but the 25-year-old’s future became further clouded in doubt following a training-ground bust-up with Nelson Semedo on Friday.

    Ronaldinho left PSG to join Barca in 2003 and went on to win two LaLiga titles and the Champions League, among a host of individual honours, during a superb five-year spell in Spain.

    And the 2002 World Cup-winner has advised his compatriot to follow his instincts when it comes to his own career.

    “I can only tell him to follow his heart and be happy, to do things that his heart tells him,” Ronaldinho told a media conference.

    Neymar is said to be interested in the move to PSG after growing unsettled in Catalonia and eager to escape the shadow of illustrious team-mate Lionel Messi.

    Messi and Suarez are reported to have spoken directly to the player to persuade him to stay but Barca President Josep Maria Bartomeu admitted this week that Neymar’s future would be out of the club’s hands if his buy-out clause were met.
