  • Neymar will reach his ‘best level’ — Tite

Brazil’s coach, Tite, insisted Neymar would reach his “best level” at the World Cup after his team’s 2-0 defeat of Costa Rica in St Petersburg yesterday.

“Neymar’s individuality shows up if the whole group is playing well,” Tite said. “You can’t put all the responsibility on one player. He was out three and a half months and he played the full match. He’s a human being. He needs some time to resume his high standard but before he does that there is a team which has to be strong and not dependent on him.”

Neymar burst into tears at the end of the game, drawing some concern about the emotional state of the team as they set off on another high-pressure pursuit of a sixth World Cup triumph. Tite said he was proud of his captain for having the courage to show publicly “the joy, satisfaction and pride in representing Brazil”.

Tite also felt his team’s second-half penalty, chalked off after a VAR review, should have stood, despite a minor degree of contact with Neymar’s shirt at the vital moment.

“If I was the referee I would not go back but I respect that because it is subject to interpretation,” the Brazil manager said. “We don’t need referees to win the game, we just want it to be fair. To me it was a penalty.

But we don’t want any help. We don’t need any help, the players don’t need help, I don’t want help. We want to be more competent.”

After a goalless first half Brazil scored twice in injury time, reward for Tite’s insistence his players concentrate and press right to the end. “At half-time, I was joking: ‘Look at the old man here, I’m 57. Pass the ball,’” he said, confirming that he had pulled a muscle celebrating Philippe Coutinho’s opening goal.

“The second half, it was beautiful, perfect.”

There was also support for the Brazil captain from Coutinho, man of the match here after a fine driving performance. “He had a difficult injury and went through a very hard patch,” Coutinho said.

“His joy of being back on the pitch is contagious. Everyone is so happy him being back and scoring.”

  • Neymar to resume training with a ball Sunday

With just over a month to go until the World Cup, Paris Saint-Germain have confirmed Brazil superstar Neymar will resume training with a ball.

The forward has been out of action since sustaining a broken metatarsal in late February – an injury that required surgery.

Providing there were no complications during the rehabilitation period, Neymar was widely expected to be fit in time for Brazil’s Group E opener against Switzerland on June 17.

And it appears the 26-year-old is on course to hit that deadline after PSG provided a brief medical update on Saturday.

“The examinations carried out today showed a quite satisfactory consolidation of the lesion of the fifth right metatarsal,” a statement read.

“Tomorrow, Neymar will begin his physical preparation with the ball on the ground of the Ooredoo Training Centre.”

Domestic treble winners PSG host Rennes on Saturday, before concluding their campaign at Caen next weekend.

Neymar’s return is coming at a time when Dani Alves has been ruled out of the world cup after sustaining injury in the French Cup final.

Alves has been a key figure for Brazil for over a decade and was set to start for Tite’s side as they looked to secure a sixth world title.

He becomes the second Brazil defender to suffer a serious injury in the build-up to the tournament, with Filipe Luis suffering a broken leg while playing for Atletico Madrid back in March.

Tite is likely to be able to call on Neymar, however, with the PSG forward having returned to France in recent weeks as he steps up his recovery from a broken foot.

Brazil legend Pele regretted Alves injury describing it as a huge blow, revealing that he is “so sad” to hear Dani Alves will miss the World Cup finals due to injury.

“I am so sad to hear this,” the 77-year-old tweeted. “Footballers hate missing games but I know first-hand that missing #WorldCup games is the worst feeling.

Prior to the injury Alves had been tipped to be named captain of the Brazilian team to Russia 2018.

  • Boost for PSG, Brazil as Neymar returns to training

Neymar is back in training with Paris Saint-Germain as the Brazil star aims to recover from injury in time for the World Cup.

The PSG forward has been out of action since suffering a fractured foot in a game against rivals Marseille at the end of February.

PSG’s outgoing coach Unai Emery has indicated Neymar has a chance of featuring for the Ligue 1 champions before the end of the season.

And after flying back to the French capital from Brazil, Neymar was in the gym at the Ooredoo Training Centre on Saturday, building up his fitness levels.

PSG drew 2-2 at Amiens in Ligue 1 on Friday and are next in action on Tuesday against third-tier side Les Herbiers in the Coupe de France final.

Winning that match would ensure Emery departs PSG with a domestic treble, his side then completing the campaign with league games against Rennes and Caen on May 12 and 19 respectively.

Brazil get under way at the World Cup against Switzerland on June 17 before facing Costa Rica and Serbia in their other group games.

Neymar who joined the French ligue 1 side for world record fee of €222million was recently linked with a move to Real Madrid, he has however played down on the issue insisting he is happy at PSG with a contract running till 2022

“I have a contract with PSG. I am happy with my team-mates and I only think about my story here,” he told reporters, via Sport .

PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi was also insistent that his star man would not be leaving claiming that the 26-year-old would ‘100 per cent’ still be with the French side next season.

  • Injured Neymar progressing well ahead of World Cup, doctor says

Injured Brazil forward Neymar will return “well prepared” at the World Cup, team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar says. Lasmar operated on the Paris Saint-Germain striker’s broken foot in March.

“Neymar is training very well. He is recovering in the best possible way, within the framework of the defined programme we have set out for him,” the doctor told Brazil’s GloboEsporte.com late on Friday, adding he will “return well prepared” for the World Cup.

  • Neymar vows to work harder to be ready for World Cup

Injured Brazil striker Neymar has targeted May 17 for a return to training, vowing to work harder than ever to be ready for this year’s World Cup in Russia.

The Paris St Germain player, who joined the club from Barcelona in August, had an operation on his foot after being injured in a French league game against Olympique de Marseille on Feb. 25.

He has been receiving treatment in Brazil and said he expects to be training exactly a month before the five-time champions play their World Cup opener against Switzerland on June 17.

“I get my final exam, if I’m not mistaken on May 17 and then I’ll be free to play,” he told reporters at a news conference in Sao Paulo.

“I had an exam last week, it is all perfect, evolving well, so I hope that continues so I can get back as soon as possible…

“I am having treatment every day and from the moment I start training I am going to work harder than I ever worked because this is a dream that’s coming up, it’s a World Cup.

“I’ve waited four years for this chance, its close and I hope to get there in great shape.”

Neymar played for Brazil at the 2014 World Cup, but missed the catastrophic 7-1 semi-final defeat by Germany through injury.

Brazil struggled in the two years immediately after their home World Cup, but have since rebounded and go to Russia as joint favourites with bookmakers along with Germany.

Neymar, who joined PSG for a fee of 222 million Euros ( $275 million ), said he was apprehensive about kicking a football again after almost three months out.

“I expect to go ( to the World Cup ) in a better state than before,” he said.

“Of course, doubts exist and I feel them too sometimes, but that’s normal for a guy who has had the first surgery of his career. It’s very difficult for me not playing and not training.”

“I have to work even harder, but I am going to have enough time to arrive in form for the World Cup, to prepare.

“It was horrible getting injured, but I am more rested, that’s the upside. We have to see the positive side of things.”

After opening their Group E World Cup campaign against Switzerland, Brazil face Costa Rica on June 22 and then Serbia five days later.

Neymar dreams return to Nou Camp

Neymar has  told Barcelona that he wants to return to the Nou Camp just hours before his Paris Saint-Germain side crashed out of the Champions League to Real Madrid.

The Brazilian has been unsettled in the French capital since joining in the summer for a world-record £198million fee.

He has now decided that a move back to Spain is what he wants and has made his former club aware of his interest in a possible return, according to reports in Spain.

However, Mundo Deportivo report that the Brazilian forward opted to inform them of his wishes just before PSG were knocked out of the Champions League by Real.

Goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Casemiro sealed a 5-2 aggregate win for Zinedine Zidane’s side in their last-16 second leg in Paris on Tuesday.

Reports claim that Neymar misses his former team-mates and admits he was stubborn in trying to come out from Lionel Messi’s shadow.

He also didn’t expect the level of Ligue 1 to be so inferior to La Liga.

Neymar knows Champions League glory is key to his hopes of winning the Ballon d’Or

Neymar is currently recovering from an operation on his foot in Brazil after suffering a broken metatarsal last month.

He has been out of action since picking up the injury to his right foot after finding himself on the receiving end of a bad tackle against Marseille on February 25.

Having had successful surgery in his homeland, Neymar will be assessed by PSG in six weeks to determine when he will return to training.

Neymar joined French club Paris Saint-Germain on a contract that will run until 2022, and was offered the number 10 jersey by Javier Pastore as a “welcome gift”. Some analysts believe the constant talk about Neymar being in the shadow of former teammates Lionel messi prompted him to seek sojourn elsewhere with a view to maintaining and enjoying his identity.

The desire to equally win the prestigious Ballon d Or award is also one which he thinks will better be realised if he steps out the usual two horse race between Messi and Ronaldo.

  • Neymar shows off heavily-strapped ankle

    Neymar shows off heavily-strapped ankle

Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Alphonse Areola admits he is worried about the severity of Neymar’s injury after the Brazilian appeared to twist his ankle on Sunday.

Neymar rolled his ankle with 14 minutes remaining of PSG’s 3-0 win over Marseille in Le Classique and had to be taken off the pitch on a stretcher.

The 26-year-old appeared in severe distress as he was brought off the field but his manager Unai Emery insisted he wasn’t overly concerned, saying the club were hopeful the injury was ‘nothing serious’.

But Neymar’s team-mate Areola was not as confident, telling reporters via FourFourTwo: ‘Of course, I’m worried about Neymar. His ankle was pretty swollen.

‘He is an important player for us and I hope he will come back soon. I do not know much more, there were a lot of people around him.’

The former Barcelona man took to Instagram in the early hours of Monday morning to show off his heavily strapped right ankle as he looks to make a speedy recovery.

PSG face Marseille again on Wednesday night in the French Cup quarter-final before a trip to Troyes on Saturday precedes the visit of Real Madrid in the Champions League last-16 second leg on March 6.

The Madrid tie, which PSG trail 3-1 after the first leg in the Bernabeu, represents the most important game of their season so far with success in Europe likely to define Emery’s reign as manager.

Neymar’s injury overshadowed a comfortable victory for PSG at the Parc des Princes as they emerged 3-0 winners over their fierce rivals.

Meanwhile, Zinedine Zidane is praying for Neymar to be fit just in time to face Real Madrid in the Champions League re-match of March 6.

While the absence of Neymar would undoubtedly weaken PSG’s star-studded attack, Zidane whose Madrid side lead 3-1 from the first leg ahead of the return tie in Paris expressed a desire for the Brazil star to play.

“No, I don’t like it when players get injured,” Zidane told reporters on Monday at a news conference ahead of Madrid’s LaLiga trip to Espanyol on Tuesday.

“I’m not happy if Neymar is injured. Hopefully he can play. I’m never going to want an opposing player to get injured.

“I do not think it influences next week’s game. There will always be a player who plays if it’s not him.

“I did not like it when he got injured, I was watching the game. I don’t think everything revolves around Neymar, but I hope it’s nothing serious.”

  • Neymar in fitness race for Le Classique

Neymar in fitness race for Le Classique

Neymar has come down with illness ahead of Paris Saint-Germain’s fixture with Marseille in Ligue 1 this weekend.

The Brazilian – a world-record signing at the start of the season – has been instrumental in PSG’s dominance in Ligue 1 this term; although he was sent off in October’s 2-2 draw at the Stade Velodrome.

A virus now has Neymar facing a race against time to be available for the reverse fixture against Marseille, having missed training alongside midfield star Marco Verratti, who is suffering from abdominal pain.

“Two players were missing, Verratti and Neymar,” Unai Emery told a pre-match news conference on Friday. “[Stanley] Nsoki, with a knock to the knee, was also missing.

“Verratti trained with the physio, as he has from the beginning of the week. He does not feel 100 per cent right.

“Neymar is sick. Lass [Diarra] was sick [on Thursday], a little fever, but he was here today. I hope it will be the same for Neymar.”

Emery insists that his side will be ready for the visit of Marseille, having drawn criticism for their performance in the away fixture.

“They are all aware of the importance of this game,” he added. “I think all players are aware it’s a different game. In Spain, I watched this game.

“Kylian [Mbappe] is very smart, he is in a process of growing up. Every game is about progress. I believe he is on the right path.”

However, Emery again expects a hard-fought match against Rudi Garcia’s men.

“[Dimitri] Payet and [Florian] Thauvin are playing well,” he said. “Marseille are playing well. They caused us trouble last time.”

Meanwhile World Soccer ruling body FIFA has dumped the Neymar’s Barcelona bonus case. The Brazil forward completed a world-record €222million move from Barca to PSG in August after the Ligue 1 giants sensationally met his release clause.

Neymar claims he is still entitled to a €30m renewal bonus after signing a contract extension at Camp Nou until 2021, although Barca maintain that terms of that agreement were breached when the 26-year-old joined PSG.

FIFA has confirmed they will step away from the dispute after legal action was taken elsewhere over the same complaint.

A statement released to Omnisport by world football’s governing body read: “After having been made aware that, apparently, the same matter had been submitted in parallel before different jurisdictions by the same party, the FIFA administration informed the parties to the dispute that based on the long-standing and well-established jurisprudence of FIFA’s deciding bodies, it did not seem to be in a position to continue with the investigation of the affair.

“The proceedings were therefore closed for formal reasons.”Neymar has impressed at PSG this season, scoring 28 goals in 29 appearances for Unai Emery’s side.

Henry to Neymar: live with Messi shadow or quit

Former Arsenal talisman and France international Thierry Henry believes that the only way Neymar can emerge from Lionel Messi’s shadow is to change sports entirely.

Neymar shocked football by leaving Messi and Barcelona to join Paris Saint-Germain in August in a world-record £198million deal.

The Brazilian’s move was in part down to his desire to play away from Messi and forge a career for himself without the Argentine’s influence.

As Neymar’s current team-mate and compatriot Dani Alves explained, the 26-year-old had to make the move to escape Messi’s shadow.

But Henry, who played with Messi at Barcelona for three seasons, believes the five-time Ballon d’Or winner will always loom over the sport no matter where you play.

‘I don’t know if Neymar left Barcelona to get out of Messi’s shadow,’ Henry told Spanish outlet Marca.

‘What is true is that all players are in Messi’s shadow, and if Neymar doesn’t want to be, he should change sport.’

Neymar has made a sensational start to life in Paris with 28 goals in 29 appearances but his side are on the brink of

Champions League exit to Real Madrid, having lost 3-1 in their last-16 first leg to Cristiano Ronaldo and Co. Ligue 1 is also considered a far less competitive division and Neymar’s chances to win the Ballon d’Or will live and die with PSG’s Champions League campaign.

Messi meanwhile scored a late equaliser for Barcelona on Tuesday evening as they drew 1-1 with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The 30-year-old has bagged 28 goals this season as Barcelona have established a seven-point lead at the top of the Spanish league table.

Neymar who has already be named in Brazil’s World cup team to the World Cup in Russia has a contract with PSG that runs till 2022.

  • Neymar is most valuable player in Europe

Neymar is most valuable player in Europe

After leaving Barcelona in order to escape the shadow of Lionel Messi, Neymar has beaten the Argentine in one measure – being rated the world’s highest value player.

The CIES Football Observatory has published its annual rankings of how much players in the top five European leagues – the Premier League, La Liga, Ligue 1, Serie A and the Bundesliga – are worth, based on factors including age, position, contract duration, performance and international status.

The list, published every January, ranks Neymar top, with a value of €213million, or £188million, while Messi trails in second, worth €202.2m (£178.5m).

Harry Kane’s increasing status in world football is reflected by being ranked third by the Football Observatory, with the Tottenham Hotspur striker valued at €194.7m (£172m).

Kane leads an impressive showing by the Premier League on the list, with five of the top 10 players coming from the English top division. There are two from La Liga, two from Ligue 1 and one from Serie A.

Dele Alli, Kane’s team mate for Tottenham and England, is sixth on the list, with the play maker valued at €171.3m (£151.25m). Kevin De Bruyne, Romelu Lukaku and Paul Pogba are ranked seventh, eighth and tenth most valuable respectively.

According to the list, although Manchester United spent £89m on Pogba, then £75 on Lukaku last summer, they actually got a good deal with both – the French midfielder is valued at £130m, and the Belgian striker at £145.5m.

There are two PSG players in the top four – as well as Neymar, Kylian Mbappe makes a strong showing, valued just shy of £170m, having joined the Parisians from Monaco last summer.

The other La Liga player alongside Messi in the top 10 is Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann, who is priced at £132m, while the most valuable Serie A star is judged as being Paulo Dybala of Juventus, who is given a tag of £154m and is fifth on the list.

There are some big names further down the table, most notably Ballon D’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo, who surprisingly is only the 49th most valuable player in Europe, say the Football Observatory.

Perhaps due to his age – 32 – or his below par performances this season, the Real Madrid star is valued at £71m – a drop of more than £40m on his January 2017 valuation, and nearly £10m less than Real paid for him initially.

Philippe Coutinho, who has just completed his Spanish-record £145m move from Liverpool to Barcelona, is also fairly lowly at 16th. He is valued at £108.6m – a substantial amount less than what the Catalan giants had to shell out.
