NFF wants Flying Eagles to win AYC

The Nigeria Football Federation has tasked the Flying Eagles to win the 2015 African Youth Championship in Senegal.

NFF deputy secretary general, Emmanuel Ikpeme, told the players at the team’s Serob Legacy Hotel in Wuye, Abuja, Wednesday that the entire country is looking up to them to win the continent’s tournament in Senegal.

“On behalf of the president of the NFF, I wish to congratulate the players who made the final squad to the AYC in Senegal,” africanFootball.com quoted Ikpeme as saying to the players.

“The President is particularly delighted that the bulk of the squad to Senegal came from the team that won the FIFA U-17 World Cup two years ago.

“The target to the team therefore is for the team to win the AYC and confirm that winning the U-17 World Cup was not a fluke.”

He added: “Your first match will be against the hosts country Senegal and do not expect it to be an easy match but we believe you are up to the task going by what you showed in your recent test matches in Ghana.

“We should not take any match or opponent for granted and so you should resolve as a team to make Nigeria happy and proud in Senegal.”

Flying Eagles coach, Manu Garba, assured the NFF that the team will go for glory in Senegal.

“We as a team always want to win every game we play and that is the attitude we will take to the AYC.

“We will not underrate any team in Senegal, but we are confident we will do the nation proud,” the coach stated.

NFF confirms cancellation of Nigeria/Ghana friendly

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has confirmed that the much talked about friendly match between Nigeria and Ghana has been cancelled.

The proposed friendly match billed for London on March 29, was reportedly cancelled by FIFA, stating that the friendly game negates the new rule against playing two matches in three days in two different continents.

Reacting to the development, NFF General Secretary Musa Amadu confirmed the cancellation of the proposed friendly based on the new rule.

“There is a new rule that states that a team cannot play two friendly matches in two continents within a few days, if the distance between the two venues is more than five hours by air.

“However, the same does not apply if it is within the same confederation. We are therefore looking at an option of playing in Africa on the 29th after the Bolivia match in Uyo,” said the General Secretary.

Amadu also clarified that the proposed friendly match has not been agreed by the two football federations. “We merely sent a proposal which the Ghana F.A had not consented to before this development,” said Amadu.

NFF set World Cup target for Super Falcons

Nigeria Football Federation Technical Director, Emmanuel Ikpeme, has charged the Super Falcons to make sure they qualify for the knock-out stages of the FIFA World Cup in Canada.

Speaking during his official welcome of the team to camp for their upcoming qualifiers, Ikpeme congratulated them for winning the Africa Women Championship (AWC), adding that they should extend their dominance to the world stage.

“You must work hard by your actions, conduct and utterances. It is not impossible to go beyond the group stages; it is football we are talking about. You can go to Canada and become an upstart and scatter all earlier permutations and make a statement to the whole world.

“It is not a question of coach inviting you to camp and you just come here and struggle to make the team to the World Cup and them you go there and just relax.

“You girls must go beyond the group stage at the World Cup. It’s not a question of playing friendly matches where you win by big margins, your ultimate goal is to go to Canada and exceed all expectations.

“You must come out of that group D. I want you guys to tell Nigerians that you are not only champions of Africa, but can conquer the world. Your ultimate goal is to go to Canada, qualify from your group and ultimately surpass any earlier record,” he told thenff.com.

Keshi can resume as Eagles coach Wednesday – Pinnick

The Nigeria Football Federation president, Amaju Pinnick, has disclosed that Stephen Keshi could resume work as Eagles coach on Wednesday should he agree on a new contract.

Keshi’s initial three-year deal ended after he guided Nigeria to the Round of 16 at last year’s World Cup in Brazil and he has since been working without a contract, africanFootball.com reports.

Pinnick said a new contract would be sent to Keshi on Tuesday.

“We have concluded on the contract of Keshi. It should get to him by Tuesday (today) and if he is fine with it, he would begin work as early as Wednesday,” declared Pinnick.

“We have taken this long because we do not want litigation. We had to look at everything that would protect him and protect the federation and would also be good for Nigeria.”

On whether the NFF would fold its hands and watch Keshi head to Burkina Faso, Pinnick said, “He is a man that has a choice.

“It would be up to him to choose. If what Burkina Faso would offer him is better that what we are offering you don’t expect him to stay, but that would be unfortunate.”

Meanwhile, the board of the NFF will meet next week Tuesday in Abuja.

  • Disu petitions NFF

    Disu petitions NFF

The protracted crisis arising from the processes leading to the election of the Ogun State Football Association has taken a new twist with one of the leading contenders, Tajudeen Disu, sending a strongly-worded petition to the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF).

The umbrella body for Nigerian players, the Association of Professional Footballers of Nigeria (APFON) also kicked against the illegalities which have tainted the electoral processes in more than 10 states across the country.

Disu petitioned the NFF not to recognise the election which purportedly returned Majekodunmi to office on the grounds that it did not follow the laid-down procedures on elections according to the NFF statutes.

“Majekodunmi employed Machiavellian tactics to disqualify all potential opponents and I, his only remaining opponent, was schemed out 24 hours to the election. He hand-picked an electoral committee, without the knowledge of Congress, and the committee went ahead to do his bidding by disqualifying all opposition on one frivolous allegation or the other.”

Disu also accused Majekodunmi of altering the statutes guiding the election and asked that he be prosecuted by the relevant authorities.

“I think a crime was committed when he (Majekodunmi) produced the guidelines on eligibility for the election and conspicuously missing was the requirement that a serving civil servant is not eligible to contest in the election.

“This was distinctly different from the guidelines used in other states and Majekodunmi cleverly removed that portion because, as a school teacher, he is not eligible for election. We owe a duty to ourselves and the generations of players who suffered for Nigerian football to fight this injustice.

“I have a feeling that there’s a deliberate attempt to stop ex-internationals from getting directly involved in the administration of football in Nigeria as evidenced by the scheming out of Etta Egbe and Ajide from their respective states’ elections. ”

In the same vein, APFON Executive Secretary Austin Popo has also kicked against the flawed elections in Ogun and some 10 other states which he described as “a rape of democracy and slap on the face of Nigerian players”, with the brazen manner in which the illegalities have been carried out thus far.

On the options open to him, Disu said the present struggle transcended himself as an individual. Hear him: “It’s not about Taju Disu. This is a movement to liberate Nigerian football from the clutches of the forces of darkness and I’m happy with the calibre of people involved in the struggle. Our lawyers will advise on the next line of action but, I can assure you, it is a battle we are willing and ready to fight. It is a revolution and we are ready.”

He also disclosed that a seminar for referees in the National League and Nationwide League will hold in the different zones March 7-8.

    Collaboration tops FIFA, NFF talks

FIFA President,  Sepp Blatter on Wednesday held an official meeting with top officials of the Nigeria Football Federation(NFF) at the home of FIFA in Zurich, Switzerland.

Blatter, who was in company with FIFA General Secretary Jerome Valcke, welcomed the team on arrival at the headquarters of world football, and assured the Nigerian bigwigs that FIFA would be ready to collaborate more with the new Nigeria Football Federation.

NFF President Amaju Pinnick led the team, which also included NFF 1st Vice President, Seyi Akinwunmi, and the General Secretary, Musa Amadu.

The Nigeria delegation will return to Abuja today.

  • Wenger, NFF strike accord

    Wenger, NFF strike accord

NFF President Amaju  Pinnick held what was  generally described as an “extremely positive and encouraging” meeting with the Manager of English Premiership side, Arsenal FC,  Arsene Wenger on Tuesday.

The legendary manager met with the NFF supremo in his office at Arsenal FC’s training ground where a wide range of issues were discussed, including the rising stock of Nigerian-born players at the club – players like Chuba Akpom and Semi Ajayi.

After the meeting, Pinnick, who was accompanied by the new Special Envoy for the Federation on International Affairs, Tunde Adelakun, said: “As we had always known, Arsene is very knowledgeable; vast in his knowledge and appreciation of Nigeria as a footballing country, and widely philosophical in his general approach, assuring that, contrary to what is reported about some clubs in Europe trying to steer their players to play for the countries where they live, Wenger was emphatic on what should be.

“He told me that he has never stopped any player from opting for whichever national team he wants. He said that he always tells his players to follow their hearts and not allow people to push them. He further assured that if Nigeria extended a call-up to either or both of his players, he will have no objection if the players say they want to go.”

Pinnick had led the charge to Arsenal to enlist Wenger’s support in “the process of rebuilding the country’s football,” and he was not disappointed.

“Arsene told us that he will gladly do what he can to assist where we want, and has already started giving encouraging signs towards the capacity building exercises for our coaches at all levels.”

  • Keshi explodes again NFF destroyed Super Eagles

Super Eagles AFCON  2013 winning coach Stephen Okechukwu Keshi hardly grants media interviews anymore in recent times. But Reporter REMI SULOLA caught up with the “BIG BOSS” and convinced him to open up on all the issues Nigerians want him to talk about.

Keshi answered all questions frankly and straight from the heart with guns blazing in this no holds barred exclusive interview. He spoke on the disappointment of non qualification to defend the title Nigeria won in South Africa, why the team went from an exemplary team to a struggling team, his sour relationship with his employers, the Nigerian Football Federation(NFF) as well as his feelings concerning the public pronouncements on him by his senior colleagues in the coaching business.

He also put things in perspective concerning the alleged moves to get another coaching job after the Eagles failed to qualify for the 2015 AFCON:

FAILURE TO QUALIFY FOR AFCON 2015

“Well, it’s a very painful thing when a coach loses a game or does not qualify for a tournament. It doesn’t feel good but you cannot win all the games. It’s not possible. Even some of the best coaches did not make the next round in the world Cup. Some of them did not make it. Some of them did not even win a match in the last World Cup. It’s not that they like it. They are not feeling good about it but it’s part of the game. You win some, you lose some.

“Personally, I wasn’t happy because I wanted Nigeria to be there again and it would have been an opportunity for Nigeria to win it back to back and make Nigerians proud again. But every disappointment is a blessing. I believe it is the will of God. I can’t do otherwise what God has ordained?”

    NFF DERAILED EAGLES PROGRESS

“Its the same way I started with the Super Eagles, it’s the same way I have been working elsewhere, I don’t think I would change because the same thing that I have been doing that was working. But at a point, what I have been doing was stopped. The NFF stopped the programme we were running, working with the home based players, trying to put some competition between the home based and the foreign professionals and it was going well and it has been working everywhere I go.”

“But we don’t have patience, we just want everything to be done immediately. You cannot have it that way. Here, I am surprised that those days when we were playing, we don’t have people imposing players on  coaches. One time that this happened was when they imposed Christian Chukwu and Emmanuel Okala on Otto Gloria. We lost the game 2-0 against Algeria. And Otto Gloria said he was not involved in the game. He was like you want Christian Chukwu to play? I am not in charge.

“That’s the only time I have seen that done. But these days, it’s just that my players have to play. There’s too much sentiments, so many things happening. It should be whoever is the coach should be allowed to coach, that’s why he is employed. It’s not for them to tell the coach who is to be invited or to play. Because they are not seeing what the coach is seeing. I will continue to do it the way I have been doing it. Just that I have gained more experience at this point. So, I will just keep going.”

    PLANS FOR EAGLES FUTURE

“Well, if I am there we will get some friendly matches and go for it. Mostly with the local players, especially to give them the experience, confidence, the bonding for them to know what it is to play at this level and then when we have the FIFA free day, we’ll have one or two matches, we can then bring in some foreign professionals to join them and start working together. If we keep playing friendlies, it’s then you’ll have a good structure of what you want. Everything should be alright.”

MEDIA CRITICISMS BY SENIOR COACHING COLLEAGUES

“Yes, I am disappointed by the public media criticisms of me by my senior colleagues in a way because for example Kashimawo Laloko, I was one of his players. Coach  Adegboye  Onigbinde, I was his captain. Amodu Shuaibu for example,we worked together, he knows what I can do,we were like brothers.

“If those three should come out saying all they’ve said, it should have been their happiness that we had this boy as a player and he is now doing well as a coach, we have to support him. And if there’s something going wrong, we need to call him behind and talk to him and should be able to discuss that this is what is going on and things like that.

“These are people I respect a lot but it’s unfortunate that they have to make their own contributions through the newspapers, radio or TV. I have never insulted any of them and I’ll never do it. Even my ex- team-mates know me. I never insulted any of them. They should come out and say whatever they want to say, it doesn’t matter. It’s their own opinion.

“I  don’t think I have seen any professionals going out in front of the TV or newspapers to start abusing or belittling their other colleagues that he doesn’t know what he is doing. You don’t do that because you don’t have the same ability of thinking, reasoning or vision. If you want to do something, you may be can talk then.”

    ON PROPOSED CONTRACT RENEWAL

“The situation is that there’s no proposed contract for me. It’s only by word of mouth from Amaju. There has never been a proposed one that I’ll say I’ll go through. Anyansi also talked about it but it’s the same thing. They are just confusing Nigerians that I’ll sign today or that I’ll sign tomorrow. They are just promising whatever. There’s no such thing. I don’t know where they are getting that from.”

ON HIS INTEREST IN THE JOB

“I am a professional coach. Coaching a team is not just about you. Everyone has to be involved. The FA, the media, everybody that has a stake in it, you know will have to contribute to make the team a success. To make things work out well, if there’s no unity, nothing is going to happen. As a professional coach, yes, I am interested. But if it’s not going to come, it’s not the end of the world.”

ON TAKING A PAY CUT IN NEW CONTRACT

“Yes, it is very insulting.NFF never talked to me about that. Like I have been saying, if I am not coaching Nigeria it’s not going to be the end of the world. If that’s their  thinking, we might have an agreement for any other person to take it.

“Coaching Nigeria is a great opportunity  because after playing for 14 years, captaining the Nigeria team and as a player for 14 years, as one of the pioneers of the Flying Eagles, assistant coaches to Bonfrere Jo, Shuaibu Amodu, then came in as the head coach and winning the AFCON after almost 20 years, then thinking of a pay cut I feel it’s something I will have to think about.”

SNUBBING MAIGARI AND PINNICK IN MALABO

“That’s a very good question. I never saw Aminu Maigari in Malabo. I never saw Amaju Pinnick in Malabo. I don’t know where they got that information from. I guess it’s just to make Keshi look bad to Nigerians. But Maigari will never say he saw me. I have not seen Maigari since we came back from the World Cup. I am sure somebody is sponsoring them to write all these things to make Keshi look bad in the sight of Nigerians. But no wahala. God is watching.”

    EQUATORIAL GUINEA JOB

” Well the thing with Equatorial Guinea is that it’s been long they’ve been after me to coach their team. I was to go to Equatorial Guinea to sign  a five-years contract before Maigari called me to come back to take up the job of the National team. I was already in Malabo to sign.

“But I made a U-turn to Nigeria to sign and when I came to Nigeria I signed in the month of November. In December, Equatorial Guinea had a problem with their coach and they came back to me again. We were in training camp at the Bolton White Apartments and Hotel, to ask if I can help them and I said I cannot do that.

“I told them that I have to talk to my boss about such. When the Equatorial Guinea Ambassador to Nigeria asked who he could talk to, I said okay, speak to Maigari, if he agrees I’ll go for the one month but if he doesn’t, I cannot. He went to speak with Green and Maigari, they said they cannot allow me to go.

“But immediately Amaju came in and made the statement that my crew and I have been sacked from the National team after the Sudan game in Abuja, the next day Equatorial Guinea came to me again that their FA wants me for the ongoing AFCON tournament. And I said okay. That we’ll talk.

“Meanwhile, I don’t understand why they used the word sacked when I don’t have a contract in the first place.

“But in December, they invited me to Equatorial Guinea, we spoke and I told them it was too short for me to take up the job. Because AFCON was to start on January 17th and they want me to start in December. I cannot do that because the time is too short for me to do anything with the team. I told them that they should wait till after AFCON. That we can restart the whole programme and talk then. So, the relationship between Equatorial Guinea and I has been there for about four years or more. That is why I didn’t go to Equatorial Guinea. Not because of non agreement on contract money or conditions.”

  • CHUKWU TO NFF: Get Eagles a coach now

CHUKWU TO NFF: Get Eagles a coach now

Looking at the pace of Nigeria’s tumbling from FIFA’s rankings to 43rd in the world now, former Super Eagles Chief Coach Christian Chukwu has urged the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to effect the appointment of a new Super Eagles Coach immediately if the Federation so wishes.

Chukwu also advised that they should start contract discussions with the out of contract coach of the team Stephen Keshi if the NFF wishes too.

The concerned football coach said getting a new coach for the senior national team was taking too long and  further delay may be dangerous since other African countries have coaches that have mapped out various programmes for their teams while the Super Eagles has none for now.

“Time does not wait for anyone and before you know it another qualifying series for the next Nations Cup will soon start. The Super Eagles is the major problem for now. The earlier a new coach is appointed, the better for the team. The new coach has to know the team and start grooming them immediately and delay may be dangerous. If the Nigeria Football Federation(NFF) wants to re-appoint Stephen Keshi as the team’s new coach let them do so now because any further delay is dangerous,”, Chukwu told Sportinglife yesterday.

He, however, expressed confidence in the abilities of the coaches handling the U-23 national team, the Flying Eagles and the Golden Eaglets adding that the three teams will make Nigeria proud in their respective assignments.

“Personally, I don’t have fears about our junior teams they have been doing well in their various programmes and tournaments. I am particularly impressed with the performance of  the Flying Eagles and the U- 23 national teams handled by Manu Garba and Samson Siasia at the Super 6 tournament.

“I am also more impressed with the performance of Siasia’s team against the U- 23 national team of Tunisia. It shows that the junior teams and their handlers are working hard to make Nigeria proud, so no fears at all for the age grade teams. It’s only the Super Eagles I am entertaining fears about”, Chukwu disclosed.
