  • Anambra 2017: Ngige, Nwobodo, Uba others unite against Obiano

Chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) were locked in strategic planning yesterday on how to dislodge Anambra State Governor Willie Obiano come November 18.

They vowed to stop at nothing to see to the defeat of the incumbent at the forthcoming governorship election.

Leading the chieftains were Minister of Labour and Employment Senator Chris Ngige, former Governor of Old Anambra State, Senator Jim Nwobodo and Senator Ifeanyi Ararume.

They met at the Finotel Hotels in Awka at the second South East stakeholders meeting.

Others at the meeting were Senator Nkechi Wogu, Senator Azuh Agboti and Chief Cosmas Maduka.

All the governorship aspirants, including Hon. Tony Nwoye, Chief George Moghalu, Engr. Bart Nwibe, Dr Chike Obidigbo, Senator Andy Uba, Chief Obinna Uzor and Prince Donatus Okonkwo were also at the meeting.

The only notable absentee was former governor of Abia state, Orji Kalu.

The stakeholders admitted dislodging the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) will be tough but not impossible.

Nwobodo, who headed the committee that convened the meeting, told the stakeholders defeating an incumbent was a difficult task without adequate preparations.

He urged the APC chieftains to go to the battle field with a united house to guarantee victory.

According to Nwobodo: “We are going to sign a pact before the primaries that anybody that loses will help the winner to emerge as governor.

“But let me tell you that to remove an incumbent is not easy but we want to win the election and you should stop listening to rumours,” he said.

Ngige said: “Obiano is a master of propaganda and has plenty of money for the election. We are going into a war with him, but we must go into the war as a united front”

“A lot of things are at stake. Obiano’s government has been campaigning every day. If we fail this election, the entire South East has failed.

He went on: “You must see this election as a case of survival in the zone with Anambra as the flagship.

“We are taking over the Anambra State government house but it will be a long journey because we are going to war with the incumbent.”

Senators Wogu, Ararume and Agboti said Obiano has failed the state and must be defeated.

Ngige: no funds to pay workers

New minimum wage talks may have been shifted until salary and promotion arrears owed civil servants are cleared, it was learnt yesterday.

Minister of Labour and Productivity Chris Ngige, Minister of Finance Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, Budget Office Director-General Ben Akabueze and Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President Comrade Ayuba Wabba met yesterday with the leadership of the National Assembly to find ways of clearing salary and promotion arrears of civil servants.

Also for discussion at the closed door meeting chaired by Senate President Bukola Saraki was the issue of payment of transfer allowances of workers and death benefits.

Ngige told reporters that they were at the National Assembly on the invitation of ledership.

He added that though some progress was made at the meeting, all sides were to go back and come back tomorrow with possible solution to the identified issues which is that “government does not have enough fund for now to tackle the issues”.

Ngige said: “We are here on the invitation of the National Assembly, the joint committee on labour and employment and the meeting is chaired by the Senate President.

“We are here to discuss issues relating to things that are meant for industrial harmony in the public sector.

“As you are aware, the labour federations have said the governors have not been treating them well.

“One of the cardinal issues of International Labour Organisation (ILO) is to give our workers decent jobs and we decided to discuss with them.

“We looked at the issues of salary arrears, promotion arrears, death benefits, location expenses and transfer allowances, hotel allowance, which overtime have accumulated and had run into billions  and this is what is owed to federal public servants and we started the meeting today to find a solution.”

Asked why a new minimum wage was not top on the agenda, Wabba, who was almost walking away, described the process as “holistic”.

On labour’s demand, he said: “Labour has spoken with one voice. We have made a formal demand, which you are aware. It is N56,000, there is no need repeating it.”

Worker’s Day: Buhari committed to workers’ welfare, says Ngige

President Muhammadu Buhari is committed to enhancing the welfare of workers, Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, has stated.
He saluted the resilience of workers and hope for a better future in the face of the current economic challenges.
The minister said the president was doing everything humanly possible to improve the welfare of workers with several programmes in place to actualise that.
In his 2017 May Day message, Ngige felicitated with the workers over the celebration.
In a statement by Deputy Director, Press in the Ministry, Samuel Olowookere, the Minister said: “The federal government is not unaware of the economic challenges facing Nigerian workers in the public, the private and informal sector of the economy.
“Mr. President is committed to the enhancement of workers’ welfare, through programmes like the Federal Integrated Staff Housing Scheme (FISH), creation of enabling environment to stimulate the economy with the aim of improving the social-economic wellbeing of Nigeria in all sectors of the economy.”
He solicited continued support of the workers to the change agenda, especially in the fight against corruption.

  • Ngige and Anambra politics

    Ngige and Anambra politics

On Monday, April 17, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige featured on Odenigbo 99.5FM and took an unnecessary swipe at the Obiano administration. While one is not surprised at his position, during the programme because as an opposition figure, he must be seen to be living up to expectation, especially as an election is in sight, one must however point out the litany of half-truths which he spewed during that show to set the record straight and to properly guide public discourse.
Dr. Ngige described Chief Willie Obiano as “Governor-do-nothing”; that the three magnificent flyovers in Awka are “bus culverts and monstrous obstructions” on a federal highway; that the state government has no right to put a barrier in the bridge. That the flyovers would soon collapse and that an APC state government would “pull them down”.
It is unfortunate that he only succeeded in confirming the perception of many Nigerians that the APC government is a ‘pull down government’. He should be told that this is the time to build up and not to pull down.
Ngige was only trying to be clever by half when he scored Obiano 50 percent only on security, saying that his administration between 2003 and 2006 had a “better and more efficacious security initiative”. But is he denying that today Anambra State is one of the most secure states one can think of? Is it not known to everyone that throughout the month of December during the yuletide, there was no single shot fired by armed robbers, and no single case of kidnapping and other crimes in the state?
Ngige argued that Professor Soludo’s high rating of Obiano’s government is “politically motivated”. This is to say the least preposterous.
Ngige said he was the one that first came up with the idea of an airport in the state at Igbariam. That Obi abandoned the idea and that the one Obiano wants to build at Umuleri is overpriced, and shouldn’t have been a Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement.
This is at best laughable! Because if he is asked why he did not build the airport, he would readily hide under the fact that he was removed from office. Then the next question should be: why was he removed from office?
In describing Obiano as “Governor-do-nothing,” Ngige has again shown to the world that he is an unrepentant spoiler of good works. For it has been roundly acclaimed that Obiano has taken governance to another level in Anambra State with a plethora of viable and credible projects scattered across the state.
Currently, there are 181 projects going on in each of the 181 communities in the state under the do it yourself scheme involving N20 million investments to each community. And by June this year, another N20million naira worth of projects would be awarded in each community under the second phase of the scheme.
No doubt, in the next one or two months, the governor would be busy commissioning these 181 projects across the state. This is one major reason why the people are bent on re- electing Obiano to the chagrin of the likes of Dr. Ngige. But the good thing is that they cannot change the reality.
Those who visit Anambra State easily see that things are working and the people are happy; workers are being paid as and when due, roads are being constructed and re-habilitated, security is being beefed up, health facilities are being provided, and bridges are being constructed.
Last December, the Anambra State government paid the workers’ salaries on the 20th of the month, all leave allowances and pensions were paid on the 20th of the same month. So, there was no liability brought forward into 2017 and every civil servant in Anambra State received a bag of rice produced in the state.
It is this local production of rice that Ngige is now trying to rubbish.
Is ex-Governor Ngige blind to the fact that as at the time Governor Willie Obiano came into office, the production capacity of rice in the state was 78, 000metric tons, but that today, Anambra produces 230,000 metric tons of rice? The records are there for all to see! Is he also oblivious of the truth that in the next two to three years, Anambra will become a net exporter of rice?
Ngige further argued that Obiano’s claims on foreign investments and vegetable exports are “bogus and over exaggerated”. Good enough, his expression of bogus and over exaggerated betrays the fact that he acknowledges some progress made in that regard, but instead of giving the administration kudos, he must try to attack it for puerile political reasons.
Is he not aware that agriculture has received a major boost in Anambra State? Why is it difficult for Ngige to believe that Anambra now exports Ugwu leaf, Spinach and bitter-leaf to Europe which are now fetching Anambra solid foreign exchange?
Anambra State capital, Awka, now wears a new look as three brand new flyovers have been constructed in the city and there is street lights everywhere, beautiful roads in the state capital and what used to be a local government headquarter has now become a real state capital, courtesy of the wisdom, ingenuity and integrity of Governor Obiano.
Recently, the administration completed two long bridges at two different locations in the state. Despite the economic crunch, the government is still fulfilling its obligations to the people.
It is also important to note that the Anambra State government has awarded contract for 111 roads that will be ready in the next few months, before serious rain sets in. These are apart from the ongoing existing roads projects across the state.
Almost all the nooks and crannies have been lit up, all the major cities in Anambra are lit up at night that wherever you go, it’s like day break at night in Anambra State. This is courtesy of the wisdom and understanding of the governor.
In the area of health, the state government has awarded contract for 326 health centres, one in each ward in the state. These are being done seamlessly as if there is no recession in the country.
The governor had promised the people that they would glide through economic recession without any serious impact on their lives, and this is coming to pass. So what is the justification for the “Governor-do-nothing” sloganeering of Ngige?

Atiku, Ngige: he left a big void in Southwest’s politics

Former Vice President and All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain Atiku Abubakar and Minister of Labour and Employment Senator Chris Ngige yesterday expressed shock over the death of Senator Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke.

They said his death left a big void in Southwest’s politics.

In a statement from his media office in Abuja, Atiku said the commitment of the late Adeleke to the educational advancement of his people was unparalleled.

He added that his contribution to the advancement of democracy would be greatly missed.

The Turakin Adamawa described Adeleke as a cosmopolitan politician, who had a good grasp of the dynamics of Nigeria, having spent his early years in Enugu until the onset of the Civil War before relocating to Ibadan to complete his secondary education.

He stressed that Adeleke’s commitment to education, which led to his instituting a scholarship award for about 100 indigent students in tertiary institutions across the country and other humanitarian interventions were noteworthy.

The former Vice President expressed his condolences to the Adeleke family, the people of Ede and the Osun State government and thepeople on “the loss of their illustrious son”.

Atiku condoled with the National Assembly and the Osun State All Progressives Congress (APC).

He prayed for the repose of his soul and strength and comfort to the family, friends and associates.

Ngige, in his condolence message signed by his Special Assistant on Media, Nwachukwu Obidiwe, described the late senator as a colossus, whose sudden death left a huge void in Nigeria’s political firmament.

He said he received the news of Adeleke’s death with shock, saying the senator was a rare breed.

The minister said: “Prince Adeleke belonged to the special breed of the political class, who strongly believes in politics without bitterness. He would be missed by the common people of his immediate Ede community, the good people of Osun whom he served as governor between 1992-1993, the people of Osun East he also represented in the Senate.”

Ngige: informal sector key to job creation

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, has said formalisation of the informal sector is one of the Federal Government’s cardinal approaches   to combat unemployment.

He spoke when  the executives of the Association of Vulcanisers of Nigeria, FCT chapter, led by the  Chairman, Comrade Lawal Mohammed Okokore, visited him in Abuja.

He said vulcanising was an important self-employed occupation as it involves skills, thereby contributing to the Federal Government’s effort at reducing unemployment.

Ngige emphasised that the government alone could not create the needed jobs, adding that the era of white collar jobs was gone.

”We made a commitment not to retrench but we are interested in de-emphasissing youths dependence on limited white collar jobs.

“We rather encourage them to embrace blue collar jobs in agriculture, mining as well as in trades, such as vulcanising,’’ he said.

He urged the association to avail its members of the opportunity provided by the various skills acquisition centres of the ministry as well as key into the skills acquisition programmes of the National Directorate of Employment(NDE).

“This ministry has eight specialised skills centres spread across the geo-political zones, your members can go there and get advanced skills in vulcanising for free and be certified with trade test certificate which is equivalent to the City and Guild of past,” he said.

The state chairman of the association, Comrade Okokore, said  majority of technicians in Nigeria, including vulcanisers, lacked modern skills and equipment to ply their trades.

He urged the minister to support the association through training and workshops, easy and direct access to modern equipment and accessories as well as soft loans to artisans and technicians.

  • Reps summon Adeosun, Ngige over N302.4b pensions liabilities

The House of Representatives yesterday summoned the Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun and her Labour counterpart, Chris Ngige to appear before it. They are to explain how the Federal Government intends to offset its N302.4 billion outstanding liability to pensioners in the country.

The Speaker of the House, Yakubu Dogara who issued the summons yesterday said the ministers and heads of relevant agencies must appear before the Green Chamber on Thursday next week to find a realistic solution to the intractable problem of outstanding pension payments.

“Let them come and take centre stage and tell Nigerians what can be done to get out of this situation,” he said.

Dogara spoke after listening to the pleas of the President of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners, Dr. Abel Afolayan, who led members to meet with him at the National Assembly. He appealed to the House to assist in getting the Federal Government to make provision of sufficient funds in the 2017 appropriation bill towards offsetting  the outstanding  pension liabilities both under the Defined Benefit Scheme (DBS) and the Contributory Pensions Scheme (CPS).

According to the Speaker, the provision of section 173 (1) and (2) of the constitution guarantees that pension is a right and must not be withheld from deserving Nigerians.

“Pension is a right, so it means that the Federal Government is in debt,”  he said, adding by paying the pension the government was not doing a favour to anyone and  should not default except there are plausible reasons why it should not be paid.

Dogara said anyone who has spend the better part of his life serving the country should not be subjected to what pensioners go through in the country.

  • FG to set up minimum wage committee

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, on Friday said President Muhammadu Buhari would soon approve the setting up of a 29- man committee to engage organised Labour in negotiating a new national minimum wage for workers in the country.

The minister added that the report of the National Minimum Wage Review Committee soon to be set up by the President would still be subjected to the scrutiny of the National Assembly before it would be implemented by government.

Organised Labour comprising the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) had proposed a N56,000 new national minimum wage to the government.

The minister, who spoke with journalists in his office after a meeting of the technical committee, said the minimum wage review committee was yet to be set up, adding that the technical committee set up in June 2016 to work out modalities for review of the minimum wage and other palliatives would soon submit its report to the main committee.

Ngige said in accordance with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution as amended, it was within the ambit of the National Assembly to amend the minimum wage act since all national minimum wage issues are in the exclusive legislative list.

He said, “When the national minimum wage committee finishes its work, it will go to the National Assembly because all national minimum wage issues are issues that are on the exclusive list. So that is within the ambits of the National Assembly in accordance with the 1999 Constitution as amended.”

According to him, the main committee comprising eight cabinet ministers and the Secretary to Government of the Federation as well as labour leaders will adopt or review the report before submitting it to President Buhari who will in turn approve the composition of the minimum wage committee.

  • Saraki, Aregbesola, Ambode, Ngige pay tributes

Saraki, Aregbesola, Ambode, Ngige pay tributes

Nigerians from all walks of life yesterday expressed shock at the death of the military governor of the defunct Western Region, Gen. Adeyinka Adebayo, who passed on in Lagos yesterday. They paid glowing tribute to the Iyin-Ekiti-born general, who they said worked for Nigeria’s unity.

He was a fine officer, says Saraki

Senate President Bukola Saraki expressed grief over the death of the defunct Western Region governor.

In a statement, the Senate President described the late general as a courageous and fine officer, who spent the most active part of his life in the service and defense of his fatherland.

He commiserated with the immediate family of the deceased, the government and people of Southwest and Nigerians in general over the incident.

Describing death as an inevitable end for all mortals, Saraki noted that late Gen. Adebayo lived a highly productive, fulfilled and eventful life worthy of emulation.

Saraki said: “It is sad that we have lost an elder statesman whose wealth of experience and fatherly advice is still needed to help us navigate our way out of the present socio-economic challenges confronting the country at this time.

“We are however consoled by the fact that he served the nation conscientiously and gallantly as a courageous officer and gentleman. His life and lifestyle is worthy of emulation. I believe both present and future generations would continue to draw inspiration from his patriotism and loyalty to the national cause. He shall be sorely missed.”

He urged the immediate family of the deceased to be consoled by the good name left behind by the late general and prayed God to grant the soul of the deceased eternal rest.

We have lost another patriot, Aregesola

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola described the former military governor of the defunct Western Region as a patriot, as he joined well-meaning Nigerians in commiserating with the deceased family.

In a statement, the governor said the death of Gen Adebayo has robbed Nigeria, especially the Yoruba race, of an elder statesman.

It reads: “Gen. Adebayo served his fatherland well. He was a fine officer of the Nigerian Army and did his best in all the capacities where he served. The history of our country is incomplete with adequate mention of this fine officer.”

Recalling the deceased interests in the growth and the development of the Yoruba race, Aregbesola said the former President of the YCE tried to ensure the unity and progress of the Yoruba people.

His words: “We receive with heavy heart the death of one of Nigeria’s finest officers of the Nigerian Army, who fought for the unity of nation.

“No doubt, he is a soldier of repute and commander of men. He distinguished himself in his chosen profession both at home and abroad.

“The history of post-independence Nigeria and the crises that threatened the young nation’s existence will be incomplete without a chapter for this courageous soldier.”

Ambode:  Nigeria has lost a great patriot

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode expressed sadness over the demise of elder statesman, describing Adebayo’s demise as a great loss to the nation, especially to the Southwest.

Ambode said in statement: “Gen. Adebayo was a great patriot and one of Nigeria’s foremost nationalists who never shied away from expressing his love for his country and his people. He was a brilliant administrator who was known for his dedication and zeal to serve his fatherland.

“Those who know papa would attest to the fact that he was a man of many parts. For the Yoruba nation, this is a great loss. His passion to see the integration of the South West region was second to none. No doubt, we would miss his wise counsel especially at this time when our nation is on a path to rebirth.”

Commiserating with the family of the late elder statesman, the governor urged them to uphold the ideals he stood and fought for, saying that the nation will continue to draw inspiration from his life and times.

“His demise, just like that of our heroes past, must never be in vain. There can be no better time to unite together to achieve a better and more prosperous Nigeria”, he said.

    Fasanmi , Fasehun mourn Adebayo

Afenifere leader, Senator Ayo Fasanmi  expressed shock over the death of the former Military governor  and  Yoruba Council of Elders (YCE) President.

Fasanmi in a condolence message stated: “I am greatly shocked to hear the sad news of the death of a compatriot of our dear General Adeyinka Adebayo. The great General had come, had seen and conquered; leaving an indelible foot-print on sand of our time.

“His death is an irreparable loss not only to the Yorubas but to the entire nation that he served as an indefatigable army General and Governor. Please accept my heartfelt condolences for the irreparable loss. May his soul rest in perfect peace”.

The Odua Peoples’ Congress (OPC) Founder Dr Fredrick Fasehun  described the death of Gen. Adebayo as a big loss not only to the Yoruba but the nation.

Fasehun in a telephone interview said:  “Why should it happened now that the Southwest leaders have united to fight the course of the Yoruba nation. But who are we to query God, our creator”

He prayed God to grant the family  the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss and grant the deceased  eternal rest.

His death a personal loss, says Adelabu

Former Ekiti State Governor Prof Modupe Adelabu described Gen Adebayo’s death as a personal loss to her, recounting how the former military governor stood by her late father.

Mrs Adelabu said: “Baba’s death is a personal loss to me and the entire Adejugbe family. He stood in the gap for our late father who was a friend and brother to him.

“Baba we would surely miss your fatherly role. You were the last man standing indeed and you stood firmly and right. Sleep on dear father.”

  • Ngige, not Nnamani, is APC south east leader, says chieftain

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Bernard Ebele has condemned Imo Governor Rochas Okorocha for naming former Senate President Ken Nnamani as leader of the party in the south east.

He spoke with our correspondent in Abakaliki, capital of Ebonyi state.

Okorocha, at an APC caucus meeting in Owerri, had named Nnamani who just joined the party few weeks ago as leader of the party, a development which did not go down well with major stakeholders from the zone.

Ebele described the action of Okorocha as condemnable, accusing him of not consulting with other stakeholders in the zone before the announcement.

“Okorocha got it wrong to anoint Nnamani as leader of the party. What has Nnamani done to deserve the leader of the party in the south east?” he queried.

Ebele, a former State Secretary of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), noted Minister of Labour Senator Chris Ngige is true leader of the APC in the south east by virtues of his contributions to the merger of the party.

“Ngige is a super stakeholder in APC. He is one of the leaders of Ndigbo as far as APC is concerned.

“He led the ACN in the South East into the merger so he worked for it. We have three major leaders in the South East.

“Ogbonnaya Onu, Rochas Okorocha and Ngige but Ngige’s contribution to APC has been overwhelming; based on this he is the true leader of APC in the South East.”

Ebele stated that Ngige will floor Anambra governor Willie Obiano if he is fielded in the forthcoming gubernatorial election.

“He has done very well as Minister. He has the magic wand and wherever he goes, he applies that magic wand and things begin to turn around.

“Right now there is no strike going on. All lingering industrial actions have been resolved or almost resolved.

“And because of his performance, the forthcoming election in Anambra will be a smooth sail for APC in the state,” he stressed.
