  • Celebrating Ngige @ 63

Aging, they say is not lost youth, but a new stage of opportunity and strength. Age on the hand is an issue of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter. But to Dr. Chris Nwabueze Ngige (OON)’s friends, well-wishers, relations, and even enemies, it matters because he has just added another year, healthy, hearty, and wavering undeterred.

There is no doubt that right from outset, the personality called Chris Ngige had always has a date with history one way or the other. As a growing young child, Ngige has always carved a niche for himself in all his endeavours. During his days at St. John Secondary School Alor his hometown, Ngige was an exceptional student. No wonder he switched from Commercial to Science subjects in class four and still made distinction in his school certificate result in 1972. At University Of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), Ngige studied Medicine and graduated with flying colours in 1979, despite continuous involvement in almost all the extra-curriculum activities within and outside the campus.

Upon graduation, Ngige unlike many of his colleagues who travelled to overseas or picked jobs in multinational companies opted for a job at the Federal Ministry of Health where he worked for years, before leaving voluntarily in 1998 as Deputy Director of Hospital Services, Federal Medical Centres, and Teaching Hospitals.

While in the Federal Ministry of Health, he was instrumental to the establishment of permanent sites for most of the federal medical centres and teaching hospitals, especially in the South-east zone. In continuation of his burning desire for public service which he has proved his mettle, he ventured into the murky waters of Nigerian politics as one of the founding fathers of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP).  He was appointed the protem zonal publicity secretary of the party in the South-east in 1998, and later the assistant national/zonal secretary of the party in the South-east zone between 1999 and 2002. The same year he was conferred with the national honour of Order Of the Niger, OON, for his diligence, track record and accountability in public service.

In 2003, Ngige has concluded plan to contest for Anambra Central senatorial seat before he was persuaded by the party stakeholders including the then President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo to contest Anambra governorship seat. This was at a time Anambra State and PDP were in dire need of a worthy governor following the abysmal performance of the then state governor Dr. Chinwoke Mbadinuju. Within the short period of Ngige’s administration in the state, he redefined governance and provided a different kind of leadership that was unprecedented in the history of the state.

Till date, Ngige’s landmark achievements, especially in the area of infrastructural development that cut across the state, are obvious and verifiable –a  feat his successors have battling to measure up with, but to no avail. Ngige’s demystification of the political godfathers in the state at the risk of his life will remain a case study for student of political history in the country. His survival of his political abduction on July 10, 2003 by his estranged godfather in connivance with security agents, was a clear manifestation that God was with him and he has not completed his good work for his people.

The judicial/ presidential conspiracy that led to his removal from office as a governor is known to Nigerians. It was obvious that his removal from office was not about winning the election, but his refusal to open the state treasury to the godfathers which was the tradition in the state before he assumed office.

Upon his removal from office, he was given a clean bill of health by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, led by its chairman then, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.

Ngige as matter of principle left the PDP and co-founded the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, with the likes of Senator Bola Tinubu, former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and others. This was at a time nobody gave his new party any chance of making an in road into the South-east zone, but Ngige proved the doubting Thomases wrong as the party has remained a force to reckon within the zone, especially in Anambra State, where the party won national and state assembly seats during the 2011 elections.

It was that year that Ngige defeated Prof. Dora Akunyili of APGA in a keenly contested Anambra Senatorial seat election, despite Anambra State government’s support for Akunyili. While in the Senate, Ngige sponsored bills and contributed logically in debates. He awarded scholarship to many students in his zone and provided jobs for several others. Not left out in his largesse are several communities in the zone, he provided with borehole and electricity. Ngige worked assiduously alongside others for the successful merger of the key opposition parties that metamorphosed into the All Progressives Congress, APC. Ngige served as the secretary of the first rancour-free national convention of the party that produced the present leadership of the party led by Chief John Odigie-Oyegun.

At the peak of the 2015 general elections, Ngige was among the few men of character who solidly stood for the presidential candidate of his party APC, Muhammadu Buhari, especially in the South-east zone, where many were beclouded by financial gratifications and sentiment. True to Ngige’s belief and conviction, Buhari won the presidential election. This was despite the collective conspiracy by few disgruntled PDP elements in the zone to ensure that Ngige did not return to the Senate, and probably emerge the Senate President.

But in the face all these, his people have taken solace in the fact that the “Change” which he has clamoured and worked for has finally come for the good of Nigerians with the Muhammadu Buhari’s presidency. This singular event has vindicated him as a man who saw tomorrow, when others are more concerned about today, immediacy and lining of their personal pockets at the expense of others. There is no disputation that at 63, he still have a lot to offer Nigerians in his burning desire to serve humanity selflessly at all times.  • Dr. Anyadiora, a lecturer wrote from Owerri, Imo State.

  • ‘Ngige is qualified for any position due to the Southeast’

‘Ngige is qualified for any position due to the Southeast’

A group, under the aegis of Anambra Patriots, has said former Anambra State Governor Dr. Ngige is qualified for any position due to the Southeast.

A statement by its President, Dr. Okpagu and Executive Secretary Paul Eze said Ngige’s records, while a serving governor showed he is a man of integrity who deserved to be honoured.

“Dr. Ngige defected to the defunct Action Congress (AC) when he was Governor of Anambra State, a time the AC was seen as a plague in the zone. He contested the Anambra central senatorial seat defeated late Dora Akunyili who was backed by the then All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) governor, Peter Obi. This enhanced his political pedigree and projected the party well.

“Ngige buttressed his spirit of consistency and contested as governor under the All Progressives Congress (APC). Though he lost to Willie Obiano, this has further projected APC in the Southeast. He also single-handedly organised, sustained and funded the political structures of AC, ACN and APC in Anambra State till date.

“Moreso, his personal examples, patriotism, sincere devotion to duty and commitment to improving Anambra remained unequalled, despite distractions from some unscrupulous elements. “Undoubtedly, Ngige’s few years in office as governor was a period of refocusing and reshaping of Anambra to meet original ideas and beliefs of Anambrians.

“He is a leader of note who has sacrifices his time, reasons, goodwill and intellect at the disposal of others in commitment to selfless services to the good of all,” the group said.

    Mark, Ngige mourn Zik’s son

Senate President David Mark has commiserated with the family of Nigeria’s first President, the late Dr Nnamdi Azikwe over the demise of his son, Chief Chukwuma Azikwe, saying the deceased was a distinguished diplomat.

In a condolence message, Mark said the late Azikwe lived an exemplary life by sustaining the legacies of his father through selfless services.

He said his death left a vacuum because he died when the nation needed his services.

The Senate President recalled the philanthropic gestures of the deceased, which he said endeared him to his  community and beyond. He said his services earned him the title “Owelle of Onitsha”.

“He (Chukwuma) was known for his hard work, selflessness and dedication to duty. This he brought to bear during his sojourn as an Ambassador before he retired to private life,” Mark said.

He urged the family to take heart, saying, “this is a trying time in the history of the family but I am quick to pray for God’s divine protection and also to grant the deceased eternal rest”.

Former Governor of Anambra State, Chris Nwabueze Ngige has also commiserated with the family. Ngige described the late Onitsha High Chief as an intelligent man who made his mark as a Harvard trained political economist.

He said the deceased was a tactician who played major roles in Nigeria’s political firmament from behind the scene.

Ngige described the scion of the Azikiwe dynasty as a courageous man who stood for equity and justice at all times, even in the trying period of Nigeria-Biafra civil war.

  • Southeast APC backs Ngige for SGF

Southeast APC backs Ngige for SGF

Members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Southeast are drumming support for Senator Chris Ngige as Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).

Ngige represents Anambra Central in the National Assembly.

An APC party leader, Chief Dennis Ngene, said Ngige deserved the position because he led Southeast leaders to APC after its formation.

Ngene, who spoke in Awka, the Anambra State capital, said: “Again, when he was the governor of Anambra State, he was almost sleeping in office to get things right and even today as a senator, he leaves office around 9pm each day, showing his workaholic nature.

“Ngige is the type of person the President- elect will need to work with and besides, he had been in public service before venturing into politics.

“The Southeast has been calling for Onu and Ngige, both deserve it, but from records, Ngige, who treats his files without blinking an eyelid, deserves it, being a meticulous civil servant.”

  • Buhari’ll bring true change, says Ngige

The declaration of General Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd) did not come to me as a surprise. Though this victory was long in coming keen observers of recent developments in Nigeria  know that the victory was inevitable; that a day like this would come. It was a victory postponed, but not denied.

It is not in doubt that the last time the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won an election freely and fairly conducted in Nigeria was in 1999 under the administration of Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar.

From 2003 to 2011, PDP had not won any free and fair election. It was the judiciary that had always legitimised the shenanigans that characterised the previous elections.

It is, therefore, to the credit of Prof. Attahiru Jega that he decided to make history by insisting that the 2015 Presidential and National Assembly election is substantially free and fair despite the massive rigging some unscrupulous INEC perpetrated in the South-East and South-South states in the election.

Nigerians yearned for change: change from a corrupt, clueless, inept, incompetent, hopeless, divisive and hateful government that had been in office for the last 6 years. Nigerians yearned for a change from a government that had divided the country along ethnic, religious and regional lines to a government that will unite, unify and bond all Nigerians.

Nigerians yearned for change from a government that had no answer to the collapsing economy, mass unemployment, insecurity and mass poverty to a government that will revive the economy, create employment and empower the masses. Nigerians yearned for a government that will stop the mindless looting of our common patrimony and assets by our fellow country men and women.

I am hopeful and optimistic that Gen Buhari represents the symbol of change that Nigerians yearned for hence the massive support he received from the entire North, South West, South East and South South zones of Nigeria.

The process for the redemption of our country under the leadership of Gen Buhari and Prof Yemi Osinbajo (SAN) has just started. All hands must be on deck to support the incoming government to return this country to the path of glory and progress.

I congratulate Nigerians for this historic election in which an incumbent government at Federal level has been voted out of office through a free and fair election.

I must also congratulate the outgoing President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan for his spirit of sportsmanship in conceding defeat and thus saving the nation from needless post election tension and apprehension. To God be the Glory. Long Live Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Ngige condemns attack on Obiano, Umeh

THE senator representing Anambra Central zone, Senator Chris Ngige, has condemned the attack on the state governor, Chief Willie Obiano, in Agulu community, describing it as barbaric.

Governor Obiano and Chief Victor Umeh, the senatorial candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) for Anambra central zone, were allegedly attacked last Sunday by unknown hoodlums at the Agulu town hall during the governor’s visit to the area.

Following the alleged attack, supporters of the two leaders have laid the blame at the door step of the All Progressives Congress (APC). But speaking yesterday in Awka, Ngige denied the allegation, saying he or his party had no hand in the attack.

The former governor, who spoke through his Media Assistant, Mr. Arinze Igboeli, said, “Yesterday, I was inundated with calls by journalists asking that we respond to the allegations making the rounds on the Internet and in some dailies that the APC was behind the stoning of Chief Victor Umeh at a rally in Agulu.

“I wish to state that at no point in time did any supporter of the APC in Anambra State attack Chief Victor Umeh at a rally. It is barbaric and definitely not in our character.

Anambra community pledges support for Ngige, APC

The re -election bid of Senator Chris Ngige for the Anambra central zone senatorial seat received a major boost yesterday when the people of Umuoji, in Idemili North Local Government Area, assured him of their support.

Ngige, a former governor of Anambra State, is seeking re-election into the senate on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The people gave the assurance when Ngige visited them in continuation of his campaign tour of the state.

In his speech, the former President- General of Umuoji Improvement Union (UIU), Chief Obi Onwuachu, said that the community would continue to support Ngige and continue to deliver their votes for him for the good works he did in the town during his time as governor and as a senator.

Onwuachu said Ngige endeared himself to the people with his laudable programmes, especially the distribution of transformers in all the communities in the zone and his scholarship scheme to secondary and tertiary students.

Speaking in similar vein, an APC chieftain in Umuoji, Chief Okey Obadike, commended Senator Ngige for what he described as his excellent performance in the senate.

    Ngige knocks fuel price reduction

    •Agulu Uzoigbo community endorses him

he senatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra Central, Dr. Chris Nwabueze Ngige, has said the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-led Federal Government cannot find solution to the country’s socio-economic problems.

He attributed this to the party’s preoccupation with malfeasance, especially in the oil and gas sector, saying the reduction in the pump price of premium motor spirit (petrol) is an insult on the masses.

Ngige, who is seeking re-election after sponsoring over 12 bills, two of which are laws, addressed a crowd at the weekend, who welcomed him at Agulu Uzoigbo.

Security personnel had a difficult time controlling the surging crowd.

The President-General of Agulu Uzoigbo community, Mr. Anazodo, assured the senator that the people would vote for him, as he provided street lights and gave 44 indigenes scholarships.

At Neni, he was welcomed by dancing troupes and masquerades.

Ngige urged the people to vote the APC presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari, because he is honest, adding that they should also vote for Cyprian Udenwa and Gozie Onuzulike to ensure equity, fair play and justice.

The senatorial candidate, who distributed transformers and put in place boreholes in 57 communities, was moved when over 3,200 beneficiaries of the Ngige Scholarship Foundation thanked him for the gesture.

He promised more scholarships, distribution of small scale business empowerment tools and establishment of skill acquisition facilities, to improve the living standard of the rural dwellers and the unemployed.

The Deputy Coordinator of the APC presidential campaign in the Southeast, Chief Uzoma Igbonwa, decried the political position of the Igbo in the PDP-led Federal Government. He blamed former President Olusegun Obasanjo and President Goodluck Jonathan for the slow pace in the reconstruction of the Onitsha-Enugu, Enugu-Port Harcourt expressways and the Second River Niger bridge.

Ngige also visited communities in Anaocha Local Government, such as Agukwu Nri, Obeledu and Akweze, where he inaugurated constituency projects and was endorsed by the people.

  • Ndigbo play politics of short sightedness, says Ngige

Ndigbo play politics of short sightedness, says Ngige

SENATOR Chris Ngige, representing Anambra Central zone in the National Assembly, has blamed the problem of the Igbo people on the short sightedness of its politicians. Ngige made the remark yesterday while attending the presidential rally of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Abia and Ebonyi States. Speaking with The Nation, Ngige said that he had earlier warned Ndigbo not to put their eggs in one basket, adding that he was ignored. He was reacting to a question on the failure of Igbo indigene to get either a presidential or vice presidential slot of the APC. He said: “How can you say you want the president or vice president slot when our people already accused APC of being a Boko-Haram party? “”Ndigbo are not playing good politics. They have decided to push themselves out of political equation. “We are suffering from political shortsightedness. I warned earlier that our people should not put their eggs in one basket, but they did not listen. “Our people are busy talking about which one is Igbo, Hausa or Yoruba party. But I commend the respected Igbo sons and daughters who embraced the APC without looking back.” Meanwhile, the presidential candidate of the APC, General Mohammadu Buhari and his campaign train will storm Anambra State today in continuation of the South East presidential rally of the party. The APC rally would hold at the Emmaus House field in Awka. The team will pay a courtesy visit to the traditional ruler of Awka kingdom, Eze-Uzu Gibson Nwosu and some Catholic and Anglican clerics.

  • Ngige replies Umeh: You are jittery, afraid of me

THE Senator representing Anambra Central Zone, Dr. Chris Ngige, has described the National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Victor Umeh, as somebody who is afraid of him. He said so while responding to a statement credited to Umeh recently, where the APGA National Chairman reportedly said that Ngige’s scholarship to over 6,000 persons in his senatorial zone was a Greek gift.

The statement, according to Ngige’s media aide, Mr. Igboeli Arinze, yesterday in Awka, pointed to the fact that Umeh is jittery.

He asked Umeh to tell the people how many persons had received scholarship awards from him to enable them acquire the Golden Fleece, despite the millions of Naira he had acquired as National Chairman of APGA. According to him, ‘it is unfortunate that rather than Chief Victor Umeh commending his political senior for doing what no other politician, not even the state government of Anambra State has done over the award of scholarships to over 3,000 students in both tertiary and secondary school categories, he has rather chosen to play puerile politics with it.”

“Let me ask Chief Victor Umeh, how many youths has he empowered as Chairman of APGA and as a stakeholder in Anambra State?

“This is a man who stood by while his fellow co- traveler in Mr. Peter Obi ran Anambra as one of his chattels; he did nothing when the state government increased tuition fees from N20,000 to N130,000.

“This is sadly a man who brands himself as party chairman of APGA yet looked the other way when ANSU lost accreditation of over 13 courses.

“Today, because he wants to run for senate and knows that Ngige might be asked to run again, he has thrown caution to the winds and wants to engage in a rofo rofo fight.”

Continuing, he said the scholarship programme began way back before now, with Ngige setting up a board to advice on the form and manner it would operate with.

Furthermore, he said the students were then invited to determine by merit those who were to receive the scholarship.

“This again, you will agree, will take a huge chunk of time given the number of students.

“Perhaps, Umeh is jittery, with the implosion in APGA, he is seeing the handwriting on the wall and desperate as ever wants to hang on to at least look relevant,” Ngige said.

The statement further said that “Ndi Anambra would forever be grateful to Senator Ngige, whether jesters admit it or not.”
