  • Anambra poll: Community supports Ngige

Ahead of the November 16 governorship election, the people of Umuoji in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State yesterday declared support for Senator Chris Ngige, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate.

The Uga community in Aguata Local Government supported the Progressive Peoples Alliance’s (PPA’s) candidate, Mr. Godwin Ezeemo.

Speaking during a Town Hall meeting, the Director of Operation, Ngige Campaign Organisation, Mr. Olisemeka Onyeka, said it was convened by Mr. Vincent Ike Oligbo, who had sworn to make sure Ngige returned to the Government House to finish what he had started.

Mr. Onyeka said when Ngige returns to the Government House, he would, among others, reduce the high school fees in the state-owned universities through his policy in education to give equal opportunity to the students at the federal and state-owned universities.

The convener and National President of Ngige Movement in the United Kingdom and Ireland, Mr. Oligbo, represented by Mr. Nnamdi Mgbemena, said the rally was organised to mobilise Umuoji people for Senator Ngige because of his contributions to the development of the state.

Mgbemena said Ngige stands as one of the most precious jewels in politics, who had laid the foundation of development in the state, adding that the only way to increase development in Anambra was to give him a chance to finish the good work he had started.

Speaking at Uga Square, Nkwo when the campaign team of Ezeemo visited the community, PPA’s Women Leader, Princess Patience Eboh, described Ezeemo as the right person, who would lead Anambra State to the promised land, as he had demonstrated love and care for the orphans, widows and the less privileged before going into politics.

She said: “Ezeemo has a charity foundation for the less privileged, which has been in existence for the past 15 years. He has sponsored people from primary schools to higher institutions.

“He has established skill acquisition centres where youths are trained on how to develop their skills. He also established five industries to tackle poverty. About 5,000 people have benefited from his scholarship scheme and about 3,500 people have become self- employed.”

“Our trusted and principled Ezeemo has consulted the former Minister of Power, Mr. Barth Nnaji, concerning steady power supply and has promised to establish a power plant in Anambra State,” Princess Eboh added.

My govt will be transparent, says Ngige

All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Anambra State, Senator Chris Ngige, has promised to ensure trans-parency and accountability, if voted into office on November 16.

He also promised to fight the infrastructure battle in the state. The flag bearer said the local governments will become huge construction sites, astressing that more roads will be constyructed at the grassroots.

Addresing supporters at his campaign office in Awka, the state capital, Ngige said that he will not disappoint the people, if given the mandate to rule.

He said: “Our party has a rich antecedent. The works of our governors are visible. I have been the governor of the state before and I did not disappoint the people. This time again, I will not disappoint the good people of Amanbra State”.

The politician is expected to formally flag-off his campaign on Saturday. The campaign director, George Moghalu, said that APC will run a scientific campaign and attract votes from the nooks and crannies of the state.

Ngige stands tall among the various candidates competing for the State House. Apart from serving as the governor of the state for about two and half years, he is also a senator representing the Central District. The communities that savoured his developmental projects when he was the governor are rooting for him. The APC flagbearer has been endorsed by many groups, associations and societies on merit.

APC has also put its house in order, ahead of the poll, more than other parties. It is not certain that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has settled the crisis generated by its choice of candidate. Also, the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) is still battling with leadership crises.

Moghalu said that Ngige is the best among a the candidates, pointing out that, having been tested, he can be trusted by the people.

Exhuding confidence, the flagbearer told th crowd of suppporters that he will not betray them. he has not betrayed or failed them in the past.

He, however, assured all that he will continue to spend his time, money and energy to provide the basic amenities that will make the change they desire come to fruition, even as he disclosed that he is regarded as the truly-trusted and tested choice of the Anambra people because he has not disappointed them at any point of his career, political or otherwise.

On the double candidacy of the opposition, he said the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) promised to stop one of the candidates, positing that his party, All Progressive Congress (APC) will take up the issue if INEC does not live up to its assurance.

    •Omabala people reject Obi’s choice

THE battle for who becomes the deputy to Senator Chris Ngige, the All Progressive Congress (APC) governorship candidate for the November 16, 2013 election has intensified between Anambra East and Anambra West Local government Areas.

When the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) released the names of parties’ candidates and their deputies for the election, Ngige’s name appeared with that of Dr. Mike Aghadinuno as his deputy.

Aghadinuno, who was a onetime deputy to Hon. Uche Ekwunife in the 2010 governorship election under the belt of Progressive People’s Alliance (PPA), is a medical doctor and hails from Nando in Anambra East Council Area.

But the pressure from the party is so much on Ngige to pick Hon. Raph Okeke from Anambra West, who incidentally, was once chairman of the council area from 1999 to 2002 and also a two-time House of Representatives member.

The argument of the political egg heads from the area not only in APC but from other political parties in the state is that Anambra East already has two governorship candidates in two different parties and will not be wise for APC to choose a deputy from there.

Embattled Comrade Tony Nwoye of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Chief Willie Obiano who was picked by Governor Peter Obi as the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) against the wishes of the people, is from Anambra East also.

In a related development, APC has warned Sen. Annie Okonkwo to either join the fray or risk the wrath of the party, adding that the mega party would not tolerate any form of indiscipline from anybody.

Speaking with The Nation yesterday in Awka, Okonkwo’s political mentor and APC strongman in the state, Chief Dennis Ngene, said that Okonkwo cannot be bigger than APC adding that his problem is that of naivety.

Also, former chairman of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in the state, Chief Amechi Obidike told The Nation yesterday that APC had no room for anybody who wants to bring the party down.

Amechi who described APC as a moving train that does not know anybody who is “stupid” on its way, said that Ngige’s campaign group is prepared to make any sacrifice in making sure that APC candidate is delivered to the people of Anambra State.

•Okorocha, Mohammed, Izunazo, others in Awka

Senator Chris Nwabueze Ngige yesterday took a giant step in his bid to return to the Anambra State Government House which he vacated in 2006.

Ngige is the governorship candidate of the All progressives Congress (APC) in the November 16 election.

The campaign will kick off on October 3, it was announced yesterday at the Emmaus House in Awka during the Inauguration of Ngige’s Campaign Committee led by Chief George Moghalu.

The ceremony was attended by APC big wigs, including Imo State Governor Owelle Rochas Okorocha and APC National Publicity Secretary Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who were warmly received by traders, artisans and commercial motorcyclists inside the Awka Capital Territory on their way to the venue.

On request, the dignitaries addressed the supporters at the popular Eke-Awka market.

They were surprised by the show of affection and donations by artisans, the less privileged, widows and the needy in support of Ngige.

Other members of the Ngige local campaign team are: former State Chairman of ACN, Chief Amechi Obidike, Hon Gozie Agbakoba, Hon Osita Onyeka, Hon Raph Okeke, Iyom Dozie Ikedife and Hon Callista Nwachukwu among others. APC members in the House of Assembly were also co opted.

Mohammed told the crowd that APC Leader Asiwaju Bola Tinubu had promised to be in Anambra State to campaign for Ngige

He said that on November 16 Ngige would stand taller than any other person after winning the election.

Mohammed said Okorocha reminded them how in the defunct Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN). the needy and the less privileged donated money for candidates’ campaigns.

Okorocha, who spoke so eloquently, said he was in Anambra to ensure that the perpetual bondage of the people of the state is broken by the APC during the election.

He said the governorship battle would be between Ngige and the Abuja forces, adding that the people should not allow the forces of darkness to triumph over light.

”Ngige is a true Igbo man who cannot be shaken by anybody. His only fault he has as a person is because he is short,” Okorocha said. This threw the crowd into a frenzy.

”All the noise by any other political party should not scare you; we are going into this governorship battle with red eyes. I will personally relocate to this state for this election”, Okorocha said.

Ngige described what is going on in Imo State as a revolution, adding that it will happen in Anambra State from next March.

He said anybody who wants to contest the councillorship, chairmanship and House of Assembly elections should move to the field for the emancipation of the state.

Ngige, who was moved to tears by the donations from widows and the needy, said “what happened today has never happened all my life in politics and this is a sign of good things for the state”.

Others who spoke are Assistant National organising Secretary of APC, Sen Osita Izunaso, the National Vice Chairman South East (APC), Dr. Nyerere Anyim and National Women Leader Madam Sharon Ikeazor, among others.

  • Community congratulates Ngige

T he Alor Development union(ADU) in Idemili South Local Government Area,Anambra State Lagos chapter has congratulated Senator Chris Nwabueze Ngige on his emergence as the governorship candidate All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra State.

In a congratulatory letter jointly signed by Chief Emmanuel Ojukwu and Mr Anayo Udodinma, chairman and publicity/social secretary respectively, the community said Ngige’s victory was a clear indication of his popularity ,humility and political sagacity .They stated that by his victory, Anambra State was to about to witness another a re-enactment of history, pointing out that by God’s grace Ngige would win November 16 governorship election

“By this victory, the people of Anambra State through their delegates to the APC congress have spoken with one voice and the voice of God’’the statement said.

  • 11 parties, 10 candidates for Anambra guber election

11 parties, 10 candidates for Anambra guber election

It has now emerged that 11 political parties would take part in the November 16 governorship election in Anambra State.

Also 10 candidates have been cleared by the parties to vie for the state number one political seat.

The parties are – the All Progressives Congress (APC), Accord Party (AP), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Peoples Party of Nigeria (PPN) and United Democratic Party (UDP).

Others are Labour Party (LP), New Nigeria peoples Party (NNPP), Advanced Congress of Democrats (ACD) and KOWA Party.

Apart from the PDP and APGA who have produced two contenders each, other parties are presenting one candidate each.

The candidates vying for Governor Peter Obi’s seat are – Sen. Chris Ngige (APC), Dr. Igwebike Hygers (Accord), Hon. Basil Iwuoba (PPN), Godson Okoye (UDP), Dr .Ifeanyi Ubah (LP), Prince Leonard Uchendu (NNPP), Dr. Ifeatu Ekelem (ACD) and Chief Denis Oguguo (KOWA).

The Nation gathered on Thursday that the other remaining party United Progressives Party (UPP) has not decided on its candidate before the September 2 deadline given by the Independent National Electoral commission (INEC) for submission of parties’ candidates for the election.

For PDP, the fate of Dr. Tony Nwoye who is the preferred candidate of party’s national leadership and Sen. Andy Uba, the preferred INEC candidate is still unknown.

Also, the emergence of Dr. Chike Obidigbo, the South East chairman of Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) and Governor Peter Obi’s preferred candidate, Chief Willy Obiano has made it difficult for APGA to harmonize.

Ngige wins Anambra APC ticket in direct primaries

    •Shekarau, El-Rufai, Izunaso taunt opposition

Senator Chris Ngige yesterday won the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship ticket.

He defeated his opponent, Godwin Ezeemo, in all the 21 council areas.

According to the result declared by the governorship election primaries returning officer, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, a former governor of Kano State, Ngige won 63,255 votes to Ezeemo’s 9,564 votes.

    A breakdown of the result is as follows: Awka North – Ngige 3,405, Ezeemo 248; Dunukofia – Ngige 2,426, Ezeemo 76; Ekwusigo – Ngige 1,085, Ezeemo 297; Ogbaru – Ngige 3,086, Ezeemo 772; Ihiala – Ngige 6,938, Ezeemo 1,089; Orumba North – Ngige 2,451, Ezeemo 413; Orumba South – Ngige 3,865, Ezeemo 423; Oyi – Ngige 2,108, Ezeemo 252; Onitsha South – Ngige 1,478, Ezeemo 127; Onitsha north – Ngige 4,878, Ezeemo 162.

The APC said the primaries were held to bring democracy down to the grassroots.

Shekarau and other committee members, former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mallam Nasir El-Rufai and Senator Osita Izunaso, spoke at the Finotel Hotel, Awka.

The committee told reporters that the primaries were held in the 326 wards using the direct voting process.

The accreditation of members began at 9:30am while voting commenced at noon and ended at about 3:30pm

At Alor, Senator Ngige’s ward, the process was orderly

Voters queued behind the pictures of the contestants. Ngige scored 674 votes in his ward to Ezeemo’s one vote.

Also, at the Umuchu ward one in Aguata council area — Ezeemo’s ward— Ngige scored 89 votes, while Ezeemo scored 354 votes.

But the philanthropist disputed the election process.

Some of the members of the party were not allowed to vote in Umuchu Ward One as some of them were discovered to have cards bearing different local government areas.

Ngige described the poll as wonderful, adding that the turn-out of People showed the true picture of what would happen during the November 16 governorship election.

He said: “This is no fight. Ezeemo is my brother, we cannot fight, November 16 is the only D-day. We are brothers, there is no need for us to quarrel over the contest, and November 16 will be a landmark day in Anambra State”

Shekarau said the process was chosen by the APC to test the popularity of the two aspirants.

“We are not like other political parties where they fight to select their candidates. What the APC is doing is showing the way for others to follow; ours is not a do or die affair. APC does everything in an open and democratic process”.

  • Anambra: Ngige Battles Ezeemo for ticket

The All Progressives Congress (APC) will hold its primary for the Governorship ticket of the party today in the 326 wards.

The collation centre and the announcement of the result will take place at Emmaus house in Awka, later in the day by the party leadership.

Before now, the national leadership of the party had adopted Sen. Chris Ngige as its candidate for November 16 election.

Following the decision of the party, Anambra state screening committee petitioned the party’s hierarchy that primaries should be held to pick the candidate.

This was granted on Friday by the screening committee which declares Godwin Ezeemo eligible to contest the primary.

The letter to that effect was forwarded to Ezeemo, his campaign organisation and APC in Anambra State. It was signed by Tijjani Musa Tumsah, Interim National Secretary of APC.

It reads “following the Gubernatorial Appeal Committee sitting which took place on Friday, 30th August , 2013 at our national secretariat, I wish to inform you that the Appeal Committee has set aside the decision of the screening committee and hereby declares you eligible to contest our primary election scheduled for 2nd September, 2013” APC wrote.

As a result, Ezeemo stormed Awka at the weekend, with members of the party rolling out their drums in happy mood, praising the decision of APC for giving the aspirant a fair hearing.

The party faithful were in frenzy, moving round the streets of Awka in motor cade, singing and dancing with brooms in their hands.

The party’s primary will today pitch the former Governor of the state, now representing Anambra Central Senatorial zone, Dr. Chris Ngige against another heavy weight, Mr. Godwin Ezeemo in what the members of the party have described as a battle royal.

According to one of the party’s chieftains in the state, who spoke with the Nation yesterday, “this is democracy at its best, this is the only way to test the popularity of those aspiring for a position and not what the other parties have been doing”.

“People believe so much in APC, if Sen. Ngige wins, everybody will support him and if Ezeemo wins, it will be the same thing, the National leadership of the party has done well in giving everybody a safe landing, we the members of the party are happy” he said.

  • Obiano, Nwoye, Ngige to battle for Anambra governor

Obiano, Nwoye, Ngige to battle for Anambra governor

The stage is set for the epic battle for the Anambra State governorship seat, with the emergence of candidates of the three major political parties.

Yesterday, Chief Willie Obiano emerged winner in the primaries conducted by the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA)  in Awka, the state capital.

APGA is the ruling party in the state with Governor Peter Obi elected on its ticket.

Obiano was a Deputy Director of Fidelity Bank PLC. He hails from Anambra East council in the Anambra North Senatorial Zone of the state. APGA had stated that it zoned the governorship position to Anambra north.

Obiano got 817 votes out of the possible 1,076 according to the Chairman of the electoral Panel, Chief Martin Agbaso. House of Representatives member Mrs Uche Ekwunife got 150 votes to place second.

Chief Patrick Obianwu also from Anambra north, stepped down for Obiano, saying his move would keep the dream of the zone producing the next governor alive.

The remaining six aspirants and their votes are: Chief Paul Odenigbo (49 votes), Emeka Nwogbo (22 votes) John Nwosu (18 votes) Mr. John Emeka whose withdrawal was turned down for his absence, scored one vote. Sixteen votes were voided.

Also yesterday, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairman Bamanga Tukur announced Tony Nwoye as its governorship candidate.

Nwoye emerged on Saturday from the primaries conducted by the national secretariat -recognised Chief Ken Emekayi Group while Senator Andy Uba was elected as the candidate by the factional congress conducted by court and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)-recognised chairman of the State PDP, Chief Ejike Oguebego.

Although the All Progressives Congress (APC) congress is slated for Monday, but following a consensus arrangement announced last week, Senator Chris Ngige has been picked as the candidate of the APC.

The Monday APC congress will only serve as the coronation of his candidacy.

Obi told his party members not to relent in their support as APGA was determined to retain the state.

‘’For the past 11 years, I’ve being a member of APGA and I have always told people to believe in APGA.

Obi said “The forthcoming election is a serious one for APGA because we are going into the election with Philosophy of existentialism. For us to exist we must win that election but we must be together. In the next few days we will bring everybody together. We cannot win a medal if we are not together. This state is APGA state and we remain APGA state.

Obi assured that the party members that all party members would work together to achieve victory.

  • Anambra guber race: Ngige raises the bar

Anambra guber race: Ngige raises the bar

As All Progressives Congress (APC) names Senator Chris Ngige its candidate for the November governorship elections in Anambra State, Associate Editor, Sam Egburonu, reports that the entrance of the former governor has raised the stakes.

Everyone expects the November 16 governorship election in Anambra State to be an epic battle. But our investigation shows that most of the key players and stakeholders did not imagine the political theatre would, by now,  have become as electrified as it turned out to be since Wednesday, August 21, 2013, when All Progressives Congress (APC), in the words of one top politician in the state, “ played a fast one on the rest of us.”

Feelers from the state confirmed that APC really jolted other political stakeholders that day when it announced former governor, Dr. Chris Nwabueze Ngige, as its candidate for the governorship elections.

The shock, according to a source, was partly because of the belief of both the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) that the newly merged political parties in APC would find it difficult to arrive at an acceptable candidate. “We also did not expect a candidate like Ngige to emerge and to emerge so fast. We had reckoned on the emergence of a more neutral and perhaps less experienced candidate. The emergence of Ngige, I will admit, requires more work on our part,” said one of the strategists of a leading PDP governorship aspirant.

Imo State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, who broke the news of Ngige’s nomination, aware of such expectations from their opponents, had said the South-East caucus of the party agreed on the candidature of Ngige, adding, “The choice of Ngige was reached through a consensus. Those who thought we shall not succeed today have been disappointed.”

Even with Okorocha’s pronouncement, The Nation learnt that some stakeholders initially doubted the development. A source close to Senator Annie Okonkwo- led team confided that their opponents were taken unawares. “They thought Oga (Okonkwo) and Ngige had fallen apart and would not work together. So, when they learnt that Oga supports Ngige’s candidature, they were devastated.”

To confirm that they meant business, Ngige, the next day (Thursday)  formally notified the Senate of his intention to contest in this year’s Anambra State governorship election.

In a letter written to the Senate President, Senator David Mark, Ngige said,

“I have concluded my consultations, and now find it necessary to officially inform this Senate that I will be an aspirant, and hopefully a candidate in the November 16, 2013 governorship election in Anambra State. Please wish me luck and offer your prayers for me, even if you are not of my party…

“I intend to use the vehicle of the Progressives – our newly merged political party – The All Progressives Congress (APC),” he said.

With his emergence, the political equation, ahead the November election, has changed tremendously.

His reason for joining the race

Ngige gave the first official reason for joining this years’s governorship race in Anambra State as far back as late March 2013. It was during a quarterly constituency briefing and distribution of gifts to his constituents in the Anambra Central Senatorial District, where he assured supporters that the hitches the progressives were facing then in their merger plan would “neither affect its purpose nor dampen the zeal of the founders to liberate the Nigerian masses.”

As the chairman, Steering Committee of APC in South-East then, Ngige expressed confidence that the party would wrest power from PDP at the centre and reposition the country to the path of development.

It was at that stage that he first opened up on his ambition for the coming governorship election, declaring that circumstances were compelling him to join the race.

He recalled that he came into the Awka Government House with a blueprint out of which, he said, he was able to do 20 percent before his exit through court judgment.

As he puts it: “Circumstances are compelling me to run for Anambra governorship election because I came to Government House with a blueprint and I was able to do 20 percent.

“Another government came in and did just seven percent in seven years and I want to ask who is going to do the remaining 70 percent?”

Also in the middle of June, Ngige again reiterated his agenda and why he is in the race. He said he is in the governorship race to help “uplift the people and give them a sense of belonging.”

He said this while addressing members of his federal constituency, Idemili North and South, during a thank you meeting at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Nkpor. “There is no big deal about being a governor any longer; I have been one before. My only urge in public offices is service. I seek to touch your lives in a positive way, so that you will smile again. By the end of this month, we will formally launch the All Progressives Congress (APC) South-East zone in Awka and we believe that it is the party that will make a difference here. APC will form the next government in Anambra State,” he said then.

In his speech at the event hen, the member representing the federal constituency, Charles Odedo, told their supportrs not to be deceived by people claiming that Ndigbo have no place in APC, stating that Ngige is one of the members of Board of Trustees of APC.

    His political strength

Born 61 years ago (August 8, 1952), this medical doctor-turned politician is arguably considered, by his admirers and the leadership of APC, as one of the single most influential and popular politician in Anambra State today. Even his political opponents, according to grassroots electorates, do not seem to doubt this claim.

After his graduation from the University of Nigeria,  Nsukka in 1979, he began public life as a civil servant, serving at the National Assembly and State House clinics at different times. He retired in 1998 as a Deputy Director in the Federal Ministry of Health and soon joined partisan politics, first as a founding member of PDP. By 1999, he was Assistant National Secretary and Zonal Secretary of the party in the South-East.

In 2003, Ngige was elected governor of Anambra State in very controversial circumstances, which ironically led both to his temporary downfall and later, to his soaring image as a political giant.

It all began when he suddenly broke ranks with his political godfather, Chris Uba. This action resulted to multiple allegations and counter allegations. It also led to embarrassing revelations about the modus operandi of the political godfathers in Nigeria’s political kingdoms. As a result, both Ngige and his estranged political godfathers were criticised and ridiculed.

The unfortunate political drama peaked after Ngige, as the sitting governor, was kidnapped in broad daylight in an embarrassing but unsuccessful attempt to have him removed from office. What followed was a series of political battles, show of political power and battle of wits as was never witnessed in the political history of the state before.

Ngige’s intriguing 33 months tenure as governor was to end, however, in August 2005, when an election tribunal, led by Justice Nabaruma, nullified his 2003 victory. Ngige appealed to the Federal Court of Appeal but the annulment was confirmed on March 15, 2006, in a judgment awarding victory to the now outgoing governor, Mr. Peter Obi of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

Since then, Ngige, who later won a senatorial seat on the ticket of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), has, in spite of the scandals that literally swallowed the period he governed the state, remained affectionately loved by the commoners, grassroots and the electorate in the state. One critical test of his popularity was during the last senatorial election in his Anambra Central Senatorial District. In that election, Ngige’s major opponent was a very popular former Director-General of National Agency for Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) who later served as Minister of Information and Communications, Professor Dora Akunyili. Besides her popularity as NAFDAC boss, Akunyili’s other edge was that she contested on the ticket of the ruling party, APGA. After what was described in the media as a “clash of the Titans,” Ngige, who flew the flag of the ACN, was declared the winner.

Now that he is to fly the flag of the mega party, which include ACN, part of the ruling party in the state (APGA), ANPP, CPC and others, interested observers are wondering if his political stature would lead to a defeat of the ruling APGA and PDP?

Ichie Udochukwu Izuchukwu, a retired civil servant and now community elder from Orumba told The Nation that the choice of Ngige is the only factor that can defeat the argument of zoning, which would demand the next governor coming from Anambra North. “You know Ngige is one politician that made great impact on all Anambra people. I can assure you that Ngige will win substantial votes from Anambra North not to talk of the remaining two senatorial districts. This is because in spite of the political show of shame that threatened his tenure, Ngige was busy constructing quality roads, opening up long forgotten rural communities in every part of the state. So, zoning or no zoning, Ngige is a strong candidate that should win Anambra election any day,” he said.

It would be recalled that the state has 21 local government areas with three senatorial districts in the state, namely, Anambra North, comprising Awka North and South, Njikoka, Dunukofia, Anaocha, and Idemili North and South Local Government Areas (LGAs); Anambra Central, made up of Onitsha North and South, Ogbaru, Oyi, Ayamelum and Anambra East and West LGAs; and Anambra South, consisting of Orumba North and South, Aguata, lhiala, Ekwusigo, and Nnewi North and South LGAs.

Ngige, who hails from Anambra Central would, according to insiders, base his faith on his performance in the 33 months he governed the state before.

A source close to Awka Government House, however, described the choice of Ngige by APC as “a sweet mistake.” The source, a top state government official, said any party that ignores the call to zone the next governorship ticket to Anambra North has missed it from onset.

It remains to be seen how far Ngige’s popularity and his party, APC can go to prove that claim wrong. Investigations reveal that even before the final registration of the party, when it did not have a specific flag bearer in the state, APC’s registration of new members has been very successful in all the three senatorial districts. Now that Ngige has been handed over the flag, it remains to be seen how other parties like APGA and PDP would attempt to counter the APC offensive.
