CSO urges Borno to conduct census of persons with disabilities

The Network of Civil Society Organisations, Borno Chapter, has called on the state government to conduct head-count of Persons with Disabilities ( PLWD ), to fast track implementation of support services to them.

Mr Ahmad Shehu, Chairman of the organisation, made the call at a rally to commemorate the 2017 International Day of Persons with Disabilities, on Monday in Maiduguri.

Shehu said that the call was imperative to build a comprehensive data of persons with disability to facilitate proper planning and implementation of support programmes.

He said that lack of population data on persons with disabilities hindered effective implementation of programmes, designed to improve their social and economic well-being.

“The government should create an enabling environment for PLWD to attain their potentials because it is the only way to prevent them from street begging.

“Absence of data of persons with disabilities affect planning and interventions, hence the need to carry out census.
“Establishment of social protection programme is essential to guarantee their support and survival.

Special programme for employment and education of the PLWD should be implemented in the state,” he said.

Shehu urged the United Nations ( UN ) agencies and development organisations to accord priority in their interventions to persons with disabilities in the state.

Also, Malam Umar Muhammad, the Chairman of the Blind Association, appealed to the National Emergency Agency ( NEMA ), to include their members in the emergency food intervention programme.

Muhammad lamented that persons with disabilities were not benefiting from the programme in the crisis affected areas of the state.
“We registered 41, 414 members, most of them were displaced by the Boko Haram insurgency.

“It is disheartening to see that we are not benefiting from the food intervention programme,” he said.

Muhammad also called on Gov. Kashim Shettima, to appoint their members into various political positions, to ensure their representation in governance.

  • Diversification will boost economy – Lai Mohammed

Diversification will boost economy – Lai Mohammed

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji  Lai Mohammed, has said the nation has gradually commenced the diversification of its economy from oil to creative industry to boost internally generated revenue ( IGR ) and meet international standard.

Mohammed, represented by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mrs Grace Gekpe, stated this during the grand finale of Queen Moremi Ajasoro (QMA) beauty pageant at Oriental Hotel in Lagos.

The event ended in the early hours of Monday.

The minister said the government was focusing its attention on developing the creative sector as an alternative means of boosting the nation’s economy.

“The ministry has discovered that the creative industry is an alternative to oil and that is why we are doing a lot to support the sector,” he said

According to him, the creative industry is an area that opens up employment opportunities for talented youths, thereby, reducing unemployment and possible youthful crimes.

Mohammed commended Princess Ronke Ademiluyi, the Heritage Ambassador to QMA, for her efforts in promoting culture, and advised other groups to encourage the youths to develop more interest in promoting their cultures.

“Promoters of our culture and tradition such as Princess Ademiluyi should be encouraged because she is complementing the efforts of the government to ensure that our culture does not go into extinction.

“Such a cultural pageant as the QMA will also empower young girls not only to learn their traditional language and history, but also make them to be creative and productive,” he said.

The minister also encouraged more groups in the entertainment industry to key into programmes that would promote Made-in-Nigerian fabrics, foods, dances and local languages which would make the country the world’s tourist attraction.

The 2017 QMA pageant produced 22 year-old, Oluwatosin Shola-Shittu, an indigene of Ikere Ekiti , Ekiti State as the new queen.

Shola-Shittu emerged the winner out of no fewer than 500 young girls who registered for the second edition of QMA cultural beauty pageant.

Shola-Shittu received a cash prize of N5 million, which she was expected to use for investment as part of the empowerment programme of youths initiated by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, the patron of the pageant.

The new queen was crowned by the outgoing queen, Blessing Animasahun.

  • Fuel queues resurface in Sokoto metropolis

Fuel queues resurface in Sokoto metropolis

Fuel queues have resurfaced in Sokoto metropolis and its environs, creating hardship for motorists and commuters.

The queues, which started two days ago, became worse on Monday morning as motorists resorted to panic buying.

Some of the filling stations belonging to Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria ( IPMAN ) have increased the price of a litre of petrol from N145 to N150 per litre.

At NNPC mega stations and other filling stations run by major marketers, the queues were longer, as they maintained the official price of N145 per litre but were reluctant to sell to motorists.

Some motorists on queue expressed displeasure about the situation and urged the government to act fast before it degenerated into a major problem.

“We were happy that fuel scarcity during the yuletide had become history, only for the problem to resurface now.

“Efforts must be made to curb the problem; especially with the current socio-economic realities in the country,’’ a Motorist, Mr Sifawa Ahmad said.

Another motorist, Mary Onya said the situation was a cause for concern and government must take immediate action.

Mr Mohammed Makera, Sokoto Operations Controller of the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), said  that the problem would soon ease off.

“Expectedly, the problem will soon ease off as we will find out what the problem is and everything will be under control soon.

“Officials of the DPR have embarked on sustained monitoring and surveillance and any marketer found wanting will face necessary sanctions, ’’ Makera said.

He appealed for more patience and implored people to avoid panic buying in view of its associated dangers.

  • Late goal by Silva extends Manchester City’s winning run to 13 games

Late goal by Silva extends Manchester City’s winning run to 13 games

David Silva scored a late goal as runaway English Premier League leaders Manchester City restored their eight-point lead with a 2-1 victory against West Ham United on Sunday.

Silva converted Kevin de Bruyne’s brilliant pass from close range in the 83rd minute as City maintained their blistering form this season and won their 13th successive EPL game.

Nicolas Otamendi had converted substitute Gabriel Jesus’s cross in the 57th minute to equalise, after defender Angelo Ogbonna had headed West Ham into the lead.

It was the most unlikely lead at the end of a first half in which the hosts dominated.

City have not lost a game since April, and face second-place rivals Manchester United next Sunday.

West Ham, who have won only twice all season, sit 19th — three points behind West Bromwich Albion in 17th.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, in his post-match comment, said: “Today was different to (the late winning goal against) Southampton — I did not think that was going to happen.

“But today, since after five minutes in the second half, I felt we were going to score. Our pace and pass were quicker and better. That is why we are so happy — every game is so tough and it is important to keep our momentum.

“We started well but lost our patience and couldn’t find the players in position. They moved too much.

“But you have ups and downs — what is important is that in the second half it was outstanding the way we played.

“It means we have done 39 points in a row. That is a lot. You see how they run and how they fight, that’s why we are so proud again.

“Before next week’s match against Manchester United, we have to travel to Ukraine and after that think about Old Trafford. We are going to try to be who we are,” he said.

West Ham manager David Moyes, on his part, said: “I have to say it was a really good effort. We defended much better today.

“We’ve worked a bit on it. We had one day where we could prepare.

“We needed our goalkeeper to play well. He got both hands to most things. I thought most of it was outside the box. I have to say we did a really good job.

“What a chance we had to make it 2-2 late on. My feeling was I thought we deserved it (to equalise).

“You get results in different ways and it looked as though we might have got one today. Our effort today was top. For long parts of the game, we were in with a chance of getting a result.

  • PDP convention will be hitch-free – Wike

PDP convention will be hitch-free – Wike

Gov. Nyesom Wike of Rivers says the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ) leadership will not accept anything likely to disrupt its Saturday’s National Convention.

Wike gave the assurance when he received a national chairmanship aspirant of the party, Chief Raymond Dokpesi, at Government House, Port Harcourt, on Sunday.

Wike said that whatever anybody might be saying, the convention would be fair and hitch-free.

The governor pledged to support the party to provide a level playing ground at the convention.

“If you believe and love this party, there is nothing you cannot do, everybody can make sacrifice for this party except you don’t believe in this party.

“What I am saying is that whoever emerges we should come out as members of the same party to support him.”

Wike also condemned a statement credited to a former state governor in which stakeholders of PDP in the north micro zoned the party chairmanship position to the South West.

He described the statement as a slap on the South South, saying it was wrong for anybody not from the region to do micro-zoning against the decision of the party.

“The chairmanship was zoned to the south and presidency to the north. You cannot in your own place micro zone our own position.

“We cannot seat here and micro zone the presidency. It is not possible. It is what they tell us to do that we will do.

“PDP is not in power, it is in opposition. We need a Chairman that will drive the party to make PDP to win election,” Wike said.

He commended the peaceful campaigns by Dokpesi and his campaigning round the country to seek delegates’ support.

“What you are doing has popularised the party. This is the first time when PDP Chairman is being elected and the aspirants are going from one state to the other.

“The main fact that you are doing that is a mobilisation for the party.”

Earlier, Dokpesi said he was in the state to solicit for the blessing and support of the governor and the state delegates on his ambition.

He said as an opposition party, it was important for the PDP to allow its best materials to emerge as Chairman and presidential candidates.

Dokpesi commended the roles and support of Gov. Wike and government of Rivers towards the development of PDP and success of its forthcoming convention.

Meeting with PDP Rivers State Executive members and delegates at the party secretariat, Dokpesi said though there were eight aspirants vying for the chairmanship, including Prince Uche Secondus, his own personality had more capacity to re-brand PDP.

The Chairman of PDP Rivers, Felix Obuah, also condemned the statement on micro zoning of chairmanship position to the South West.

Obuah said that the state chapter of the party would continue to support anything that would help it to regain the mandate in 2019.

Ekweremadu hails Atiku’s return to PDP

The Deputy President of the Senate, Mr Ike Ekweremadu, has described the return of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ) as a welcomed development.

Ekeremadu, according to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Mr Uche Anichukwu, on Sunday, was reacting to the defection of the former vice president from the All Progressives Congress ( APC ) to the PDP.

He said that the move had rekindled hope not only for the party, but the nation’s democracy.

“I urge all former PDP faithful who left for various reasons as well as other progressive-minded Nigerians to emulate Alhaji Atiku.

”They should reunite under the umbrella to salvage the nation because I see a new and better Nigeria coming in 2019.

“I see a country where corruption will be eradicated, a nation that will be a pride to Africa and admiration of the international community.

”I see a nation where no man will be oppressed, intimidated, persecuted or sidelined on account of ethnicity, religion or political persuasion.

Bayelsa urges police to fish out killers of cattle dealers

The Bayelsa Government has called on the Police and other security agencies to apprehend the killers of a prominent cattle dealer, Alhaji Jibril Abdulkarim, and three of his aides.

The cattle dealer and three of his aides were shot dead at his private abattoir in Yenagoa on Dec. 2.

Abdulkarim was a member of the Bayelsa Committee for the Management and Control of Ranches, and Chairman Cattle Breeders Association ( CBA ) in the state.

Gov. Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa in a visit to commiserate with the families of the deceased, condemned the reprehensible act.

Dickson, who was represented by the Chief of Staff, Mr Talford Ongolo, assured the families of the state government’s efforts to fish out the perpetrators.

He said that the State Government would collaborate with the security agencies to ensure that those behind the heinous act were arrested and brought to justice.

The governor, who was accompanied by other top government officials and security chiefs in the state, described Abdulkarim as a peace loving, law abiding and easy going businessman who was a friend to all, including the government.

“As a government, we condemn it and we shall work closely with the security agencies to apprehend the criminals who committed these unacceptable acts in order to bring them to book.

“Alhaji Jibril was a good man; he was very easy going. He worked closely with our government to promote peace and unity among all in the state.

“He was never caught violating any law and we are indeed shocked to hear of his gruesome murder alongside some of his boys,” Dickson said.

He warned that the state government would not tolerate crime and criminality, stressing that those behind the killings shall not go free.

He urged the security agencies to intensify efforts until the perpetrators behind the killing of innocent people were apprehended and prosecuted.

If you are a man and you have a wife or you are in a serious relationship, then I want you to invest the next 5-10 minutes of your time to read this article right now.

    And here’s why…

According to a recent study by condom manufacturer Durex; 29,000 people in 36 countries were interviewed on their likelihood to cheat of their partners, Nigerian Women were considered to be the most unfaithful in the world!

As a Nigerian, you might dismiss this survey as untrue on religious and cultural basis; however, Durex may not be far from the truth actually.

    My True-life story:

To tell the truth, the unfortunate day I discovered that my wife was cheating, I wasn’t prepared for it. In fact, I had not suspected her once since we got married five years ago.

I mean I TRIED to satisfy her as a man the best way I can, the sex wasn’t bad (at least not to me…I ASSUMED); although I was battling with some SEXUAL ISSUES, however, she always told me that there was no problem that she loves me regardless of my sexual weaknesses. She promised me that we were going to find a solution to it together.

I am an author and a successful one at that. The day my entire world crumbled before my eyes was the day I came back home 5 hours earlier than normal because I forgot a very important office document.

To my dismay and utter betrayal, I saw my beloved and ‘faithful’ wife being banged and spread wide from side to side by another man who seemed to be in total control of the game. My wife was screaming, moaning, and enjoying herself in ways I had never seen her before.

Suddenly, warm tears involuntarily started to drop down my cheek because she was not just the mother of my little children, but she was also my lover and best friend (at least that was what I thought).

They were totally into each other, very unaware of my presence in the room. I sat by the corner of the room almost losing my breath like an asthmatic patient.

My first impulse was to pick a knife off the kitchen cabinet. I almost did.  If I had done that, chances were that I would have committed murder that day and my entire family and bright career would have been brought to shambles.

I decided to kill that thought of murder, and at least see the face of the person who is rough handling my wife.  Then I saw his face, it wasn’t my boss, or neighbour, or best friend.  It was hers.

The guy who had always been there.  They were very close friends before I met her.  They were still friends even while we dated.  When we were getting married, she asked me to make him one of my groomsmen.

They had been friends ever since.  At first I was uncomfortable with how close they were. However, she told me he was like a brother to her.  Then he got a girlfriend, who he eventually married and I never saw him in that light again – a threat.

Until that unfortunate moment of course, when stark reality stared me in the face like a one-eyed monster…

ALL BECAUSE I HAD A SEXUAL PROBLEM AND DIDN’T FIX IT IN TIME; AND SHE ALWAYS TOLD ME NOT TO WORRY TOO MUCH THAT SHE UNDERSTANDS.

It was at that moment that the eternal words from my grandmother resounded in my head:

Alatise lo mo atise arare (meaning, it is only you who can fix your own problems not someone else).
