  •  7 ‘Villains’ of June 12 struggle

Nigerians are celebrating the 26th anniversary of the most credible election ever conducted in the history of the country.

The June 12, 1993 presidential election that was controversially annulled by Ibrahim Babangida –led military junta pitched the billionaire business mogul -turned politician – the late Chief M.K.O Abiola of the defunct Social Democratic Party against Alhaji Bashir Othman Tofa, who contested the election on the platform of the proscribed National Republican Convention.

Abiola, who died in prison on July 8, 1998, was coasting to a landslide victory in the poll until the Armed Forces Ruling Council announced its cancellation via a terse statement on June 21, 1993.

The protests that followed the controversial decision pushed the country closer to another civil war until the former military president was forced to step aside on August 26, 2003. That development ushered in the Interim National Government headed by Chief Ernest Shonekan, who was also ousted in a palace coup by the late Gen. Sani Abacha in November 17, 2003.

Gen. Abacha died on June 8, 1998 in a mysterious circumstance.

While many Nigerians genuinely laid claims to the sobriquet of “heroes and heroines of June 12 struggle and albeit democracy.” There are others whose roles in the “extermination” of the June 12 dream would never be forgotten even by generations unborn.

They played varying roles in extinguishing the collective hope and aspirations of millions of Nigeria who came out on that historical day to elect the candidate of their choice.

To many Nigerians these people are “Judas Iscariot” of our time because they sold their conscience for “a piece of silver.” Ironically many of them are now major beneficiaries of the present democratic experiment, occupying public offices both at state and national level.

Here are some of the “perceived villains” of the June 12 struggle.

    Ibrahim Babangida:

Babangida was the head of the military government that controversially annulled Nigeria’s most credible election. He was forced to step aside after nationwide protests pushed Nigeria closer to another civil war.

    Sani Abacha:

The late head of state was a frontline member of AFRC, the military council that annulled the election.

He allegedly played pivotal roles in the annulment and also controversially incarcerated the presumed winner of the poll who later died in detention.

His government pushed Nigeria closer to civil war. But he died mysteriously and paved way for Nigeria’s return to civil rule.

    Arthur Nzeribe:

The controversial former senator also played huge roles in the annulment of that historic election.

He founded the controversial Association for Better Nigeria alongside one Abimbola Davies. The ABN obtained an interim court injunction to stop the election, a development that paved ways for the poll eventual annulment.

Nzeribe later became a senator when Nigeria returned to democratic rule in 1999.

    Uche Chukwumerije:

A senator in the current National Assembly was a strong member of Abacha’s kitchen cabinet and campaign vigorously against the election within and outside the country.

    Walter Ofonagoro:

Another very vocal opponent of the June 12 struggle. He was the unofficial spokesman of Abacha’s government.

    Lamidi Adedibu:

The late strongman of Ibadan politics was a very visible opponent of the June 12 struggle. He wined and dined with the military authorities. He also provided useful information on the activities of the National Democratic Coalition, a pro-democracy group that was in the fore-front of the struggle, to the late Abacha and his hatchet men.

Ironically, the late Ibadan high chief was one of the major beneficiaries of Nigeria’s return to democratic rule until his demise few years ago.

    Abdulazeez Arisekola-Alao:

The Ibadan-based businessman would never forget the treatment he received from students of University of Ibadan when he visited the institution for a convocation programme in November 1998. He came to the university campus with the then head of state, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, who had just taken over as Nigeria’s leader after the mysterious death of Abacha, ostensibly to placate the students for frolicking with the military during the June 12 struggle.

But he was oblivious of the harsh treatment awaiting him in the hands of the angry students who pounced on him, seized his posh cars, set them ablaze and forced him to escape from the campus through one of the police pick up vans.

  • ‘How to celebrate Democracy Day’

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State has called on Nigerians to celebrate the June 12 Democracy Day with consciousness, saying it was a strategic battle won.

The party’s Director of Publicity, Mr Kunle Oyatomi, made the call on Wednesday in a statement issued in Osogbo.

Oyatomi said: ” There is a good reason to celebrate Democracy Day nationally for the first time, but there is also a strong reason to be alert and conscious of the lesson of perseverance which today’s event teaches.

” We cannot afford to ignore hindsight to recall that the struggle to secure a firm foundation for Democracy in Nigeria has been on for more than a quarter century.

“It is only just today that Nigeria has come to acknowledge the irrecusable relevance of June 12, 1993 to the establishment of democracy in the country.”

He urged Nigerians not to forget the dozens of people, including Chief MKO Abiola, who were killed in the attempt to stifle democracy in Nigeria.

Oyatomi recalled that concerted efforts were made by powerful people to prevent Nigerians from recognizing the June 12 event as a watershed in the struggle for democracy.

“We in Osun State are so proud to have been one of those in the forefront of the battle to actualise June 12.

“Part one of our success came in 1999. Today we celebrate part two, which has to do with national acknowledgement of that day as a memorable juncture in our quest for democracy in Nigeria,” he said.

  • Give us deputy governorship slot, Ondo women plead

Ahead of 2020 governorship poll in Ondo state, women politicians have insisted that it was their turn to produce the next Deputy Governor in the state irrespective of party affiliations.

They said it had happened one time or the other in the neighbouring Ekiti, Osun and even Lagos state where women performed excellently.

At a news conference under the aegis of ‘Association of Female Politicians’ in Ondo state, the former commissioner for Women Affairs, Omowumi Ohwovoriole lamented that women had been marginalised in the state unlike other states in the Southwest.

She maintained that the United Nations( UN) 35 percent affirmative action for women was not observable in the state, stressing that out of 26 Assembly members, there is only one seat for women.

The former commissioner emphasised that they were not fighting the government, but trying to put their house in order to demand their rights.

According to her, politicians irrespective of political parties operating under Association of Female Politicians came together in celebration of June 12 Democracy Day and the 20th anniversary of uninterrupted democracy in Nigeria.

“We conducted a historical scan of the political participation of women in Ondo state and Nigeria at large and observed that over the 20 year period from 1999-2019, Ondo State women have continued to witness abysmal representative percentages across the state.

” In elective offices and legislative arm, the highest representation ever attained by women in Ondo state was 11 per cent in 2011 with three women elected to State House of Assembly, as against the recommended 35 percent affirmation, which is operative under the law.

“This unacceptable low representation further reduced, drastically, to 3.8 per cent with just one female representative presently in the State House of Assembly, and none in the Federal House of Assembly and the Senate.

” The same trend is observed in the state allocation of appointments through which persistently few women are allowed the golden opportunity of service to their state and nation relative to the men in spite of the tireless political participation of women in Ondo State”.

She noted that in Ondo the neighbouring Ekiti State, the male-female ratio in appointment and elective positions is almost 1:1, stressing that the present Ekiti State was originally part of Ondo State.

Mrs Ohwovoriole noted that across the world, the global trend reflected a close connection between female participation in governance and national development.

This according to her, was observable in African countries such as Rwanda and Ethiopia where rapid socio-economic development is witnessed after the deliberate policy implementation on female participation.

The female politician urged President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to follow the trend of other African Nations who have entrenched women leadership as a way of governance.

Besides, the association called on all State Governors across the nation to entrench the Affirmative Action through adequate appointment of women into key political offices in places where there is a shortfall in female elective representation.

  • June 12: heavy security presence at MKO Abiola, Gani Fawehinmi Parks in Lagos

Security Operatives on Wednesday manned the Chief MKO Abiola and Gani Fawehinmi ‘Freedom state’ Parks in Ojota, in Lagos to forestall a breakdown of law and order during events to mark the maiden edition of the June 12 Democracy Day celebration in the state.

The security agencies included the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), the State Security Services (SSS) and the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC).

A Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) who monitored both parks observed the heavy presence of security personnel, patrol vehicles and armoured tanks.

The personnel, which also included the Police anti-cultism squad, were armed to the teeth, while scores of officers patrolled the adjoining areas.

The officers had been on ground before 8:00 a.m. at the parks to checkmate any unforeseen breakdown of law and order as the nation marked the June 12 Democracy Day.

NAN reports that a June 12 Rally by the Yoruba Summit Group was also expected to hold at the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park, Ojota, later in the day.

The proposed rally was also scheduled to hold across the Southwest States, including Kogi and Kwara.

NAN recalls that President Buhari on Monday signed into law, the Public Holidays (Amendment) Bill which accommodated June 12 as Nigeria’s new Democracy Day.

Buhari had earlier on June 6, 2018, declared that June 12 would now be the nation’s new Democracy Day.

The date is in commemoration of the annulled presidential election of June 12, 1993, presumed to have been won by the late Chief MKO Abiola.

The election, adjudged to be Nigeria’s freest and fairest, was, however, annulled by the then Gen. Ibrahim Babangida-led military administration.

  • Yobe cancels democracy day celebration for reception of Lawan

There will be no fanfare in the celebration of democracy day in Yobe State.

Investigation has revealed that the state arrived at the decision following contemplation as to whether to merge the celebrations with the State reception of the new Senate President, Dr. Ahmed Lawan, the son of the soil to the state.

No one is sure when the celebrations will be held as according to the chairman of publicity Sub-committee Mala Musti said some adjustments have been made to the initial arrangements of activities for the democracy celebration in the state.
