  • Rafael Nadal wins historic 12th French Open

Rafael Nadal won his 12th French Open title on Sunday, defeating Austrian Dominic Thiem in four sets.

Nadal and Thiem traded powerful shots early, but as the match wore on, Nadal asserted his dominance and Thiem couldn’t keep pace.

One rally in the third set showed why Nadal is known as the “King of Clay.”

Rafael Nadal won his unprecedented 12th French Open title, defeating Austrian Dominic Thiem 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 on Sunday at Roland-Garros.

The win was another show of Nadal’s sheer dominance on clay over the past two decades.

Thiem fought hard through the opening set and was able to find the break he needed from Nadal to take the second.

At one set apiece, it felt as though Thiem might be able to put up a fight against the “King of Clay,” but Nadal asserted his will on the match through the third and fourth sets, matching Thiem shot for shot and seemingly always finding one more swing to put the point away.

This dynamic displayed itself with one brilliant point played in the third set.

With Nadal serving, Thiem sent the Spaniard sprinting back and forth across the court with huge shots but Nadal refused to let off the gas, pushing forward to play a drop shot that had so much backspin it ran away from Thiem’s late charge at the net.

All Thiem could do was acknowledge the play with a thumbs-up.

With Thiem’s best effort spent to no avail, Nadal would cruise through the final sets of the match to further cement his status as the greatest clay-court player in history.

The win is Nadal’s 18th grand slam title, 12 of which had come at Roland-Garros, trailing only Roger Federer’s 20 grand slam titles for the most in men’s tennis history. (Newsnow.co.uk)

  • Igini is most compromised electoral officer, says Akpabio

Immediate past lawmaker representing Akwa Ibom Northwest senatorial district, Senator Godswill Akpabio has assured that God will soon expose those who fraudulently orchestrated his loss in the last National Assembly election.

Akpabio specifically said the Akwa Ibom State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr. Mike Igini manipulated the election to rob him of the votes his constituents gave him, adding that ”Igini is the most compromised electoral officer in Nigeria and should not be allowed to hold public office”.

The former governor spoke at the weekend in Ukana, Essien Udim local government area of the state while empowering 1,200 beneficiaries with N100,000 each as well as school bags and starter packs to thousands of school children to mark the end of his tenure in the Senate.

He insisted that he did not lose the election, and urged his people not to be dismayed by the temporary setback.

He added that the ‘evil manipulation’ by Igini and his cohorts are being exposed as seen evidence in the arrest of some persons with card readers and other election materials.

”Please nobody should have any headache, nobody should cry because there is no need. You know your senator cannot lose election because we were all there.

”But many of them thought they can go and write whatever they like and even cancel what you won. I have never in my life experienced a resident electoral commissioner like Mike Igini and my message to him is that his hypocrisy will be exposed.

”There is no way you can come into Akwa Ibom and commit that kind of electoral fraud you committed then you go back to Channels Television and sit down and talk as if you are a pope.

”One day the world will know you and very soon the world will know you. All the materials we are recovering everyday will expose you.

”Just yesterday(Friday), the police arrested people carrying materials from where they voted and were trying to sneak into INEC. The other day, they arrested someone with card readers. He was frantically calling and trying to say that they were used for training three months after election so that they will continue to manipulate”, he said.

Akpabio further said that he intends to join President Muhammadu Buhari to sanitize the nation’s electoral system so that the likes of Mike Igini will not stop the votes of Nigerians from counting.

”For me, it is important as a former governor and elder statesman to join the President to sanitize the electoral process so that we will ensure that votes count in future elections.

”There is no need for Nigeria to continue taking one step forward and five steps backward”, Akpabio maintained.

In his response the INEC REC in the state, Mr. Mike Igini said in a telephone interview with our correspondent that Akpabio was making noise to attract Buhari’s attention for a possible federal appointment.

Igini said Section 131 of the Electoral Act excludes him and other officers of the commission from being listed as respondents in post election litigations.

”Akpabio must sustain the noise to attract the attention of Abuja for possible consideration for an appointment. The tribunal stated very clearly that Section 137 excludes my office and other officers of the commission from being listed as respondents”.

  • Apapa gridlock: Opeifa may brief Osinbajo Monday

The Executive Vice Chairman of the Presidential Task Team on the Restoration of Law and Order on Apapa Port and Access roads Comrade Kayode Opeifa will on Monday morning brief the Chairman of the Team and Vice president Prof Yemi Osinbajo on the efforts so far made on the mandate assigned to ensure free movements around Apapa.

Opeifa who dropped the hint at the weekend, while leading other members of the team on a media tour of Apapa Port and roads, could not however confirm whether the team’s tenure would be extended.

He spoke just as the head of the enforcement gang Mr Hakeem Olusegun Odumosu, disclosed that 120 trucks were impounded during the two weeks exercise.

Odumosu, a Commissioner of Police, said all the impounded trucks have been taken to the LASTMA yard and would in line with its terms of reference, not be released without presidential directive.

Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari had on May 23, issued Presidential Order, mandating truck drivers to vacate all access roads, bridges and ports within 72 hours. He sets up a Task Team with a two-week time frame to sanitize Apapa port and put in place a sustainable policy that would guide traffic management around Apapa port and the adjoining roads.

Opeifa who scored the team high, in spite of the limitations said while the Team had achieved tremendous success at the Western Avenue and all adjoining roads and bridges that entered Apapa port, its success at the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway had been slowed down by failed road, especially between Coconut and TinCan First and Second Gate Bridge and road.

He, however, expressed happiness that the axis would soon begin to heave a sigh of relief as the Hitech Construction Ltd., is ready to carry out palliative work on the failed portion of the road.

He said: “The only challenge before the team right now is controlling the truckers to move to the outbound Tin Can carriageway, in order to enable the contractor palliate the road especially at Coconut, Tin Can road and the adjoining bridges.”

Opeifa disclosed that the Federal government had awarded all the roads within Apapa, including Liverpool, Creek Road, and the Apapa –Oshodi Expressway up to Iyana Oworo, as part of the long term solutions to decongesting the ports.

He said much of the success recorded at decongesting Apapa port was as a result of the availability of the Lillypond Truck Terminal by the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA), adding that “right now, no trucks are permitted to approach the port directly, but must first go to the Lillypond Terminal from where they are thereafter called up to approach Apapa.

“To facilitate this, the NPA has approved 54 private parks around the port area where the trucks are permitted to park for a minimum fee of not more than N1000 daily. This even the operators agreed were more cheaper than staying on the road where they are extorted by street urchins and other faceless operatives. From these parking lots, the truckers are called to approach the port,” Opeifa stated.

He said the reason why trucks may still be seen on the roads is because of the low handling capacity of the ports, adding that while the Apapa Wharf could handle only 300 empty container returns per day, while TinCan can handle 1,000 empty container returns every day.

  • We didn’t reduce Buhari’s votes in Ebonyi, says INEC

The Resident Electoral Commissioner in Ebonyi State, Professor Godswill Obioma has denied collecting N300m bribe for the purpose of reducing the votes of President Muhammadu Buhari in the Feb 23rd general election in Ikwo and Ezza South Federal Constituency.

Professor Obioma stated this while reacting to allegations by the Candidate of the All Progressives Congress ( APC) for Ikwo and Ezza South Federal Constituency, Chinedu Ogar that he was arrested by the Special Presidential Investigation Panel (SPIP) for collecting bribe to reduce the President’s and other APC candidates’ votes in the area.

The REC described the allegation as ridiculous noting that Presidential votes were declared as collated.

He pointed out that altered and mutilated results which were being investigated had nothing to do with presidential votes but Federal constituency votes.

“After the elections, we observed that results from two polling units in Ikwo and 20 from Ezza South were altered and mutilated before they were brought to our office after announcement of the results of that constituency.

” I promptly reported that matter to the Headquarters who directed me to invite police to investigate the source of mutilation. In the last three weeks or one month Police have been carrying out investigation regarding that, it does not concern the Presidential election results at all. Mr President’s votes were not mutilated at all”

Professor Obioma explained that he was invited by SPIP following an allegation that PDP connived with some INEC staff to reduce votes of APC.

He noted that he has responded to the allegations raised noting that the allegations had nothing to do with him as a person but INEC as an Electoral umpire.

His clarification followed accussation by Mr Ogar that the REC and some INEC officials in the state collected bribes from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to reduce his votes and that of the President.

Ogar who lost the election to PDP’s candidate, Laz Ogbe is challenging the results declared by INEC at the tribunal.

  • Ayade would be first gov to implement 30,000 minimum wage – NLC

The Cross River State chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Benedict Ukpepi, has urged workers in the state to have faith that Governor Ben Ayade would implement the N30, 000 minimum wage, given that the governor who takes welfare seriously has been consistent with prompt payment of workers salaries since he assumed office.

According to him, Ayade is likely going to be the first governor in the country to implement the new minimum wage.

Ukpepi, who spoke with reporters at the fifth anniversary/Thanksgiving celebration and fundraising for SS Paul and Peter Catholic Church development project in Akpabuyo local government area, said there was no cause for alarm as far as the implementation of the minimum wage is concerned.

“I want every worker in the state to have faith in the Governor who is being branded by the state civil servants as salary master. I know that Ayade is not going to disappoint us. His body language tells me he is ready to implement what has been passed into law,” he said.

Ukpepi called on the workers to be disciplined, report to their duty posts on time and shun truancy to justify the salary they receive.

Also speaking, the state chairman of the Association Senior Civil Servants in the state, Dr. Peter Ipaulo, was also hopeful that Ayade will be the first governor among the 36 states governor who will implement the new wage.

Earlier in his exaltation, Rev Fr. Francis Eshiet, urged Nigerians to be alert and more security conscious to avoid falling into the hands of criminals.

  • NAEC ex-DG, Osaisai joins Bayelsa governorship race

Dr Franklin Osaisai, a former Director-General, Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC) on Sunday formerly declared his interest in contesting the Nov. 16 Governorship poll in Bayelsa.

Osaisai, a Nuclear Scientist, made the declaration during a church service at St John’s Anglican Church in his community, Koluama, a coastline community in Southern Ijaw, Bayelsa.

Speaking during the service entitled: `Solemn Declaration of Interest’ Osaisai, said that he had resolved to return to the roots of his humble beginning in Church.

He recalled that it was the grace of God that took him from a Chorister at the St. John’s Anglican Church to the pinnacle of his career.

“God took me from the church to become the pioneer Chief Executive of the Atomic Energy Commission. I have returned to him,’’ he said.

Osaisai said his aspiration to govern Bayelsa was borne out of passion for service to the people, especially with the winding down of the Gov. Seriake Dickson-led administration.

“I aspire to lead the people of Bayelsa to consolidate on the achievements of Dickson, I do this knowing that leadership and power only come from God.

“I am a firm believer and beneficiary of God’s grace. That is the reason I have chosen to declare my intention from where I had my humble beginning.

“I hope to be fair to all parts of Bayelsa, I will mobilise the people for development and progress in my position as the leader,’’ he said.

In his speech, Dr Emmanuel Oko-Jaja, Bishop of Niger Delta West Diocese said God alone could institute governments and ordain leaders, saying that: “those who aspire to lead must have the right motives’’.

According to him, it is instructive that Osaisai did not forget his humble beginning because such a trait has become rare among the elite.

“If a man will remember and recognise his humble background and chose to take this first step in this rural remote setting, it is an indication that he will re-enact the success he made out of his career.

“While it is good to aspire for leadership, it is the motive behind the aspiration that counts before God,’’ he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that clergymen, traditional rulers from Koluama, opinion leaders, community members and Osaisai’s associates graced the occasion.

  • Oyegun bites back

A few days ago former APC National Chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun, grabbed the headlines by savaging the leadership style of his successor, Adams Oshiomhole, as akin to that of an ‘agbero’ – street lingo for motor park tout.

His intervention was in support of the mini-rebellion fronted by the party’s Deputy National Chairman, Lawal Shuaibu, calling for the ouster of Oshiomhole over the ruling party’s catastrophic losses in Zamfara State and elsewhere.

I’m not too sure what the former chairman hoped to achieve with his verbal salvo and the manner in which he unleashed it. It certainly cannot be internal health and cohesion of the organisation he once headed.

READ ALSO: Oyegun: Oshiomhole lacks capacity to lead

Oyegun believes the incumbent party chair lacks the capacity to lead the APC. His statement proudly declared that the ruling party’s most glorious days were under his stewardship. How generous!

A lot of people would think otherwise. Under him the party snatched defeat from the jaws of victory when despite its majority in the National Assembly, a PDP-backed alliance seized power and relegated APC to a beggarly status. His leadership was so spineless that it could do nothing to those who had thumbed their noses at the party leadership.

Under him, governors were bigger than the party and their word was law. He ruled at their pleasure and was ever willing to do their bidding.

If his stewardship was so satisfactory, a consensus with the buy-in of Buhari and the same governors who had been propping him up, would not have forced him out.

I understand that at that point he wasn’t quite ready to give up power, so his removal would have been a bitter pill to swallow.

But he left office with grace and dignity. His bilious comments about Oshiomhole won’t return him to his former position; they only lower him in the estimation of many who used to hold him in higher regard.
