  • Six tips to identify fake interviews

The high rate of unemployment in the country has left people desperate for jobs. As such, the unemployed are susceptible to falling victims to fake interviews.

Not only are people duped by these fake interviewers, some, it has been reported, fall victims of ritualists. Whatever the case may be, it is best not to fall into their traps. Here are ways to identify fake interviews:

    ·       They have little or no online presence. This is the 21st century. It is very uncommon that a company or an outsourcing company for that matter will have no website. It is not only restricted to website. They should have blogs, social media accounts or any online presence. However, bear in mind that some credible organisations do not yet have an online presence.

    ·       They usually send SMS alone. These SMSs are usually filled with excess grammatical errors. True, everyone makes mistakes but when the mistakes are more than usual, it’s a red flag. Meanwhile, credible companies use SMS, email and sometimes calls during recruitment.

    ·       When you receive messages from people you did not apply from, your suspicions should be up.  It is likely that your number was randomly picked. Normally, your CV is first reviewed before an invitation for interview is done. So, if your database is not in their system, how did they find you?

    ·       Again, most fake interviews do not specify the job title in their SMS. Reliable companies let you know the job title you’re applying for.

    ·       Asking you pay a fee. ‘Processing fee’ ‘registration fee’, ‘consultancy fee’, ‘training fee’, all these are some of the names used to embellish the act of duping done by these “interviewers”

    ·       The venue of the interview can also give away the sincerity or dubiousness of the company. Suspicious- looking structure and unconventional buildings should raise an alarm in your senses.

In all, make sure to be alert and careful. Do not allow desperation and frustration get you caught up in the web of fake interviews. Happy job hunting!

  • I’ve forgiven those behind my ordeal, says ex-gov

Immediate past governor of Imo State, Rochas  Okorocha has described the Judiciary in Nigeria as “the Daniel that has always come to Judgement”.

He said that whatever happened concerning his Certificate of Return was in the plan of God “so that the nation’s democracy can further be strengthened and rights of the citizenry also protected considering the pronouncement of the Court over the seizure of my Certificate of Return.”

Okorocha  also said that he has forgiven the Returning Officer in the Imo West Senatorial election, Prof. Innocent Ibeabuchi who claimed that he declared the former governor  winner under duress,  and all those who had played one role or the other to cause the ordeal he went through, over his Certificate of Return.

Meanwhile, the Imo State governorship candidate of the Action Alliance (AA) in the 2019 general elections, Uche Nwosu, has hailed the Federal High Court judgment on the Imo West Senatorial election.

Nwosu in a chat with journalists in Owerri, shortly after the judgment, said that the judiciary has once more proven to be the hope of the common man.

According to him, “the judiciary has shown that it is the last hope of the common man. The landmark judgment has shown that no matter how hard you try to suppress the truth, justice will always prevail.”

  • I’ve lost weight since taking over from Ambode -Sanwo-Olu

Barely ten days after taking over the number one political seat in Lagos State, the new Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Friday confessed that he has started losing weight due to the demands of the office.

The immediate past governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, had handed over the state to Sanwo-Olu on the 28th of May, 2019.

Sharing his experience so far with State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Sanwo-Olu said “Well, the experience is real, it got to show that the challenges are real, they are there, it’s not a tea party. You don’t sleep and wake up and the traffic has gone down, you don’t sleep and wake up and there is no rain and that you’ve resolved Apapa gridlock, it’s real.

“So it’s something that has psychologically prepared one for. So the best thing to do is to ensure that you are not about looking for what the other person did but it’s for Lagosians seeing you do what you said you are going to do for them.

“You don’t do it from the office, you have to do it from the road, you have to do it so that people will see and truly know that you mean business.

“I dare say that I have lost weight and probably I will lose a little bit more but I think it’s what the job entails and is to also ensure that you have the right team of people that would also support you.

“So when as a leader, you show that leadership support, then the message itself will trickle down and trickle down very well and that is why we have to take that very bold idea and you’re going to see a lot.” he said

On the level of progress concerning the Apapa gridlock, Sanwo-Olu said “It’s a work in progress. If you go to Lagos now, you will see that they have started clearing it. So for us, it’s not just to do it but to ensure that we sustain it.

“So sustainability is critical. It’s to build a model where it’s sustainable and we are not also involving the big players we are also discussing with them – the shippers council, the shipping lines, NPA, NIMASA and all of them that are stakeholders in the conversations around port utility, we are settling it.

“We will continue to engage ourselves and come up with a sustained resolution, not just a one off.” he added.

Asked to speak on regional cooperation to check kidnapping and banditry in the South West, he said “It’s still work in progress and we have a southwest leader who I am sure has also addressed the press on the matter.

“I don’t want to be at the risk of preempting what that body will do, let us wait for them to come up with a proper action plan at the regional level and let’s see what solution it will come with.” he said

On how the issue of security the state governors discussed with President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday, relates to Lagos State, he said “Security is everybody’s businesses but as a governor we also have a major responsibility to ensure that as number one security officer of the state, security of lives and properties is also paramount as the chief executive officer of a state.

“But beyond the fact that everybody has some responsibilities or the other, just as a father has his kids, a wife is to her children as managing director is to his staff, so the state Governor also is to the entire state.

“So It’s a work in progress for us as a state and for me in particular, it’s something that I take it very seriously. We are not just to be mouthing it but we make sure that we put resources in place and strategies.

“We’ve been talking about domesticating and pushing part of the initiatives around security trust fund, that we’ve done.

“We will continue to engage, and continue to identify. What are the sources, what are the underlining issues that are bringing about it? Are they economic? Is it more than that? So that we will also attack the root cause. It is something that is for us as a government since we are looking for investors.

“We certainly must continue to be in a position where we can give confidence to all our investors that it’s a safe haven to come and invest. So for me, it’s important, it’s paramount and I thank Mr President for calling us to have this conversation” he said

  • Couple, another killed as cultists go berserk in Ikorodu

A couple and a mentally unstable woman were in the wee hours yesterday murdered by suspected members of the Black Axe cult group in Ikorodu, Lagos State.

The killings occurred at about 3:42am at Itupate area of the town when hoodlums said to be over 80, struck in search of members of Eiye cult

It was gathered that the attack was carried out to avenge alleged brutality meted to one of their members identified as Lanre three days earlier.

The Nation gathered that the said Lanre had escaped lynching by members of Eiye fraternity who claimed he was using his position to shield Aiye members in Ikorodu.

No fewer than 10 persons are believed to been killed in cult-related violence in the area in the last three weeks.

A resident who asked not to be named for fear of retribution told The Nation that residents were woken up by screams from the hoodlums who were chanting war songs.

“They went straight to Lati’s house. His younger brother and wife lived there. It seems they came for his younger brother who is alleged to be an Eiye member. They killed him.

“Then, his wife recognised one of the killers as Lanre’s boy and when they saw she had identified them, they killed her too.

“As they were leaving, a mad woman was pouring water on them and they shot her dead. These killings have become worrisome in Ikorodu. The police in Ikorodu need to sit up.

“The police in Ikorodu did not show up in all of these. I am telling you that they only came out with Onyabo (a local vigilante group in the town) after the cultists and miscreants had retreated. We cannot continue to live in fear as a result of the activities of criminals. Let the police go after the criminals and their sponsors.

“Who is buying arms and ammunition for these cultists? Who is using them? Will the police say they do not know them? Can’t the police arrest Lanre?

“There are complaints that Lanre’s  boys are receving the backing of  some influential people and that is why they are about committing atrocities.”

Our correspondent gathered that while the RRS were dislodging those who advanced towards the palace in protest, miscreants were said to have taken advantage of the melee to vandalize people’s shops, carting away television sets, fans and other valuables.

Contacted, police spokesman Bala Elkana, a Deputy Superintendent (DSP) said the violence occurred around 10pm on Thursday, adding that two cultists died and six injured.

He said Friday’s melee was as a result of the police’ clampdown on the hoodlums which led to the arrest of 21 suspects including an alleged notorious kingpin.

He said the police received a distress call that some cult members from two rival groups engaged themselves in supremacy battle along Isikalu palace and Solomade area of Ikorodu.

“The command’s anti-cultism unit and patrol teams from Ikorodu were promptly drafted to the scene. The leader of the gang, who has been on the wanted list of the command, Yusuf Omidele is popularly known as General was arrested and twenty other cultists.

“General was charged to court on several occasions and sentenced to prison. He completed his last sentence in 2014 and has become an Elder-in- Council in Eiye Confraternity. He led his gang in a reprisal attack on the members of Aiye, whom they alleged to have killed the wife of one of their leaders some weeks ago.

“The suspects arrested belong to both Aye and Eiye confraternity and have all confessed to belonging to secret societies. Two cultists died from the cult clash and six others were injured.

“The massive onslaught launched by the command on cultists and gangsters is a continuous operation with a view to arresting other fleeing members of the gangs. Four locally made pistols, eight machetes and three daggers were recovered. Suspects will be charged to court.

“To proffer a  lasting solution to youth gangsterism, involvement of teenagers and underage persons in cult activities, especially at Ikorodu, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police Zubairu Muazu yesterday met with traditional rulers, religious leaders, elder statesmen, parents, youths and other stakeholders at Ikorodu. All the stakeholders agreed to join the police in the fight against the menace of cultism and gangsterism,” he said.

  • Delta promises to fix well-head fire

The Delta State Government has assured indigenes of oil-rich Polobubo (Tsekelewu) community in Warri North council area of its commitment to finding lasting solutions to their environmental, health and socio-economic demands.

Deputy Governor Kingsley Otuaro, who gave the assurances while addressing protesters from the community at the Gates of the Government House (Annex) Warri, also assured government would put together a visiting team, in conjunction with Chevron Nigeria Limited, the operators of the burning oil-well head, to the community by Tuesday to proffer solutions.

He was drawn by the massive, placard wielding protesters, who braved the heavy downpours, forcing him to stop his convoy to attend to the protesters.

They were led by community leaders including the National President of Polobubo (Tsekelewu) National Council (PNC), Mr. Ebilate Mac-Yoroki; Chief Mathew E. O. Tiemo the Secretary of PNC, Mr. Midwest Kukuru; and Hon. Dickson Asoki.

The community, in a position paper presented by Mac-Yoroki, lamented the dire situation the well-head fire had subjected the health of the people and their environment to.

He lamented the lack of concern or empathy by the company operating the facility, adding the community had fallen under serious health and environmental threats because the water and air had been contaminated by oil, gas and black soot.

According to him, the fire from the well-head worsened since Monday, releasing a huge cloud of smoke over the community, which has been raining gas, oil and black soot on the community and causing serious health and environmental concerns as well as hunger and lack of water.

He said: “The spewing substance, which we have every reason to believe to be crude oil and gas, is clouding above the whole community and coming down like rain or dew.

“Since this is what we have been having to inhale, we have cause to believe that it is the reason that many of our children are currently sick, running high temperature every night, we have even had many cases of convulsion as well as loss of blood. Besides that, everything kept outside is not safe, including our drinking water.

“Having said that, we wish to make a number of demands from Chevron to ameliorate the situation that this disaster has forced us into:

“We need Chevron to immediately stop this fire and the gas and smoke emission. The company should immediately send qualified medical doctors to start attending to all the sick and weak in the community, we don’t need to die before they will believe that their activities are seriously affecting us adversely.

“ We need clean potable water urgently because even the ones we currently drink have been polluted from their sources. We urgently need all sorts of food stuffs because we no longer have access to our main source of livelihood; fishing, which is also our main source of food. Hunger is worsening in the community.

“We need Chevron to, with immediate effect, embark on a process of cleaning the waters within and surrounding the community immediately. This is because they provide life for seafood.

“It is still the only means of recreation for our children but as it is currently polluted by crude oil and gas, we can’t fish, just as our children cannot swim in it. It is almost a ‘concentration camp’ experience for us currently.

“We are a community of peaceful and hardworking people but besides the fact that Chevron has refused to give our people jobs, the natural environment that ought to have been their source of livelihood has been taken away from them by the activities of the company.

“In the light of this, we demand that Chevron pays compensation to every member of Polobubou.”

Responding, the deputy governor said: “We are not unaware that there is a raging fire like you put it, close to Polobubo community in Egbema Kingdom.

“We are also aware that Chevron is also making some frantic efforts towards getting that fire off. We are also not unawares that it is trending on social media, national dailies and in the broadcast media, about the attendant challenges to the fire.

“You have made a subtle request that you wish the Delta state government to pay an on-the-spot assessment visit to Polobubo and its environs and see what is happening, with a view to attending to the issues that you have raised in this paper before us.

“I want to assure you that the Delta state government, led by Sen. Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, is a responsive government; a government that responds to the yearnings of its people and just like you have said, there is an issue and I want to say that between now and Tuesday next week, we will send a high power Delta state government team, possibly in collaboration with Chevron Nigeria Limited, to see, first hand, what the issues are, with a view to addressing some of them”.

President of Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Barr. Eric Omare, described the ongoing events in Polobubo community as “environmental genocide”, adding Chevron Nigeria Limited would not dare allow fire to rage on for close to two month in its home country in the US.

  • Ibom Air makes maiden flight to Lagos

The Ibom Air owned by Akwa Ibom Government on Friday conducted its maiden flight from Uyo to Ikeja, Lagos State.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the airline’s Bombardier CRJ-900LR aircraft, which took off from the Obong Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo landed at the Murtala Muhammed Airport 2, Lagos at 1.15 p.m.

It was welcomed with water canon salutation by officers of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) Fire Services.

Gov. Udom Emmanuel said that the airline was a project designed to enhance the economy and create employment opportunities for Nigerians.

The governor, who was represented by the deputy governor, Mr Moses Ekpo, said the project was a testament to the vision of rapid industrialisation based on three gateways of land, sea and air into the state.

He, however, called on all Akwa Ibom indegenes to support the project regardless of their political affiliations.

“Finally, let me use this opportunity to appeal to some of our people in the opposition; it is not everything about us that should be coloured by, or be seen through the prism of politics.

“We should learn to separate development from politics.

“Ibom Air is a huge achievement for us all.

“ When we board these aircraft to either Lagos or Abuja and back to Uyo, the Cabin Crew will not ask you whether you are a PDP or APC card-carrying member.

“Sponsoring articles in the newspapers aimed at dismissing the great works we have done such as this, or telling the world Ibom Air will never become a reality, is highly unfortunate and sad.

“We are better than this,” Emmanuel said.

According to him, the aircraft (Bombardier CRJ 900), would maintain regular daily flights to both Lagos and Abuja respectively, urging Akwa Ibom residents to avail themselves of the opportunity.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the Ibom Air represents one of the governor’s signature project in his first tenure.
NAN also reports that Ibom Air was launched on Feb. 20 with three aircraft by the former Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki.

  • I’m still in race for Senate Deputy President – Sen. Gaya

Sen. Kabiru Gaya (APC-Kano), says he is still in the race for the Deputy President of the Senate.

Gaya, who made this known while briefing newsmen on Friday in Abuja, said though the All Progressives Congress (APC) had not made its position known on who to endorse for the position, he was optimistic to be chosen by the party.

On concern that he might not get the party’s endorsement because he is from same region with the number one citizen, President Muhammadu Buhari, Gaya said it was not a cause for concern.

According to him, there is no fear of lopsidedness or marginalisation of other regions because the party has zoned Speakership of the House of Representatives to the South West.

He said he was not against lawmakers from the South being prominently represented in the senate.

He, however, stressed that he worked tirelessly during the general elections to ensure that APC won in almost all Local Government Areas (LGAs) under his constituency and should be considered.

“The party has not zoned the position yet but I think it should look inward.

“On the fear of lopsidedness, we have senate president zoned to the North and speaker to the south, so I think deputy president of the senate coming from North West is fair enough.

“I am not denying anybody from the South from being in our team but for the position of Deputy Senate President, I think it should be given to South West.

“Besides in the National Assembly, we do not talk region, party or religion. We are senators of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and that is what matters,” he said.

The lawmaker also declared support for Sen. Ahmad Lawan’s Senate Presidency bid, saying they would make a good team.

He further said, “In terms of experience, I think I am well placed to take the position, being a ranking senator and former governor among other advantages that I have.

Gaya, however said he was fine with any decision the party came up with, adding that he would take it in good fate should the party not endorse him.

“If the party does not zone the deputy senate president to North West I will be fine with it but I want the party to do justice ahead of 2030,” he said.
