Nigeria, China partner to boost creative industry

The Charge D’affaires of the Chinese Embassy, Zhang Yi has expressed China’s commitment to collaborate with Nigeria in cultural exchange programmes and infrastructure development.

The Acting Ambassador to Nigeria, according to a statement by the Ministry of Art, Culture and Creative Economy, made the commitment during a courtesy visit to the minister, Hannatu Musa Musawa at the weekend in Abuja.

Yi, according to the statement, emphasised the importance of a partnership between Nigeria and China, particularly in infrastructural development.

The envoy also highlighted the Minister’s agenda for strategic partnership and infrastructure development, especially with plans to develop the Abuja Creative City project.

The statement which was signed by the media aide to the Minister, Nneka Ikem Anibeze reads in part: “China has been putting great efforts into supporting the sovereignty of Nigeria. We are also encouraging Chinese companies to come and invest in Nigeria. That is why a lot of Chinese companies have a huge presence here in Nigeria but the foundation of both countries wouldn’t be solid without cultural and people exchanges, and that is why my country attaches great importance to cultural tourism and people-to-people exchanges between China and Nigeria.

“Nigeria has a rich cultural background and we need to do Cultural Exchanges. We should get to know each other better to strengthen our relationship. We are planning to host President Tinubu in China in September and we hope you will be a part of the delegation so you can come and see the culture of China.”

The minister was quoted to have expressed the need for both countries to align in areas of culture to showcase their unique selling point to the world.

“I would like us to explore different programs and initiatives that we can do together at Davos or UNGA or the Olympics or something to show the world that China and Nigeria are very much aligned.

“Investment is very important for us and I think there are lots of investments to be made in Nigeria, especially with the ministry. We want to build infrastructure, one of which is the Abuja Creative City which is going to be a huge one-stop shop for everything culture and creative in Africa. The Abuja Creative City will house film studios, arenas, museums, and galleries. We don’t have a museum in Abuja so we plan to have our own Louvre in Abuja.

“We are working with the FCT ministry to identify some potential locations for the project. We want to have China Town, Korea Town, India Town, Brazil Town, etc in the Creative City. These are some of the things we can collaborate on, and I know that in terms of infrastructure, China is the best, so I look forward to some collaborations”.

The Minister and the Ambassador also discussed progress made during the first meeting of the Culture and Tourism Subcommittee of the Intergovernmental Committee of China and Nigeria, held online on January 12, 2022.

The two sides reviewed and discussed the achievements between China and Nigeria in recent years and the future development of cultural and tourism cooperation. They agreed to take the establishment of the sub-committee as an opportunity to further promote bilateral cultural exchanges and tourism cooperation.

This renewed commitment to collaboration is expected to yield significant benefits for both nations, driving economic growth, cultural exchange, and creative innovation.

NGO ramps up support for displaced community in Nigeria

An NGO, Amede.org, has reaffirmed its commitment to the Madonna Mercy Village in Ogbaru, Anambra State.

This partnership, which began in 2020, was initiated by Honorable Arinze Awogu, the former chairman of Ogbaru, who introduced Amede.org’s president to the village.

Madonna Mercy Village, managed by Rev. Fr. Dr. Collins Ifeanyi Ojene, is a sanctuary for the mentally challenged, abandoned elderly, the hungry, sick, and other marginalized individuals.

Fr. Ojene’s unwavering dedication to his community has inspired Amede.org to provide monthly support since the partnership’s inception.

The village faced a significant setback during the devastating floods of 2022. The disaster resulted in the loss of crops and livestock, the destruction of several buildings, and severe damage to the hostel, putting many lives at risk.

In response, Amede.org, recently registered as an NGO in the United States, has intensified its efforts to support Madonna Mercy Village. The organization’s mission now includes raising awareness and funds to aid the displaced community. Their expanded support encompasses women’s empowerment, access to clean water, early childhood development, and additional critical services.

In the first week of the month, Amede responded to an urgent plea for help from Madonna Mercy Village. Beyond their regular monthly contributions, they delivered essential supplies including fans, robes, bedding, toiletries, bags of Garri, rice, and cartons of noodles. Amede.org pledges to continue providing these vital items periodically.

The NGO has also launched a global campaign to highlight the plight of abandoned elderly individuals in Nigeria. They are actively negotiating with schools to enhance educational resources for underprivileged students and are exploring financial support options for women seeking to improve their businesses and family lives.

Amede.org’s ongoing mission is to find donors and volunteers dedicated to making incremental commitments towards creating a better world. Their steadfast support for Madonna Mercy Village is a testament to their dedication to humanitarian causes.

  • Nigeria: How we got here

    Nigeria: How we got here

As Africa’s most populous country, largest economy and most notable) democracy, Nigeria is a bellwether for the continent. A weakening economy and rising insecurity threaten progress made in its democratic development. Amid deepening distrust in government and institutions, Nigeria has significant work to do in improving national, state and local security and governance following the national and state elections of 2023″- United States Institute of Peace, April 22, 2024

With food inflation hovering at around 40 per cent, a threat of increase in the pump price of petrol, as well as an unremitting insecurity – gun men this past week returned to Plateau state – as if they ever left – killing about 40 people and   torching several homes in that latest orgy of insecurity in the state where the governor, Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, is allegedly more interested in

getting some elected, spineless opposition law makers to sign advance resignation letters( resignation from where, the House of Assembly? Wonders will never end in Nigeria), there’s more than enough reason to critically examine how we got to this terrible juncture in Nigeria.

There’s this popular Yoruba proverb about a disabled who, when  told how unsteady the load on his head was, told the interlocutor to better look at his legs. There has been a deluge of criticism of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu government, especially by political opposition titans, the likes of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and Mr Peter Obi, both dishonestly attributing everything wrong in the country to the present government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu even when they both know that, truth be told, Nigeria did not get to this sorry pass in one day, or between May 29, 2023 and today.

Any objective appraisal of the  Tinubu government must, therefore, take into cognisance how his predecessor, President Muhammadu Buhari (2015 – 2023) completely wrecked Nigeria, and took her back, economically, no less than 30 years. You would, in fact, be right to liken that government to Satan which the Holy Book said came to kill and destroy. This means that whoever became President May 29, 2023 could only have done very little in ameliorating our extant circumstances in one year.

It is, therefore, necessary to summarily dismiss the shibboleth of President Tinubu being the source of our current multi- sectoral problems simply because, as they claim, he removed fuel subsidy too quickly as if there was budgetary provision for it beyond June, 2023 according to a statement  by Zainab Ahmed, minister of finance, budget and national planning, on 7 October, ’22.

Although they now, opportunistically, claim that they would have waited ages to end it, all presidential candidates of the major political parties promised to make fuel subsidy removal their very first action in office.

Long story cut short, President Buhari, through his sheer inability to have a firm grip on his government, especially on many of his key and consequential aides, the likes of Attorney – General

Abubakar Malami, who coyly took over complete control of the EFCC, Aviation Minister, Hadi Sirika, who sold Nigeria cheap, claiming he was setting up a National Carrier and, of course, Godwin Emefiele the Central Bank governor, who so completely epitomised  Buhari’s laizerfaire,  Sheik-like approach to governance.

Emefiele made it his bounden duty to  ensure  that Nigerians went through agonising  anguish, queuing up for hours in banks trying to access their own money which he had earlier coyly confiscated, claiming he was going to redesign the national currency. So completely did Emefiele capture President Buhari that the latter was obliged to start giving his own interpretation of the Supreme court decision on the Naira re- design case after some state governors, belonging to the President’s own political party, had become so passed off at his actions on the issue they headed to the apex court for a quick constitutional resolution. For President Buhari, his position on the matter was a literal abdication of his official duties, indicating how powerful Emefiele had become, serving the personal financial interests of members of the Villa cabal.

On my part, all I could do was record the sordid happenings for posterity. I did that in the article below, published Sunday, 19 March, 2023 drawing close attention to that Presidential aide who went toe to toe with President Buhari on the furious journey to Golgotha, taking Nigeria down with them.

Titled ‘Godwin Emefiele: Not Until I Have Been Disgraced’, it read as follows, with slight editing for space:

I was privileged to have been both a student and later, staff of the University of Ife, Ile – Ife, when Olawale Gladstone Emmanuel Rotimi Esq, best known as Ola Rotimi (13 April 1938 – 18 August 2000), one of Nigeria’s leading playwrights, and theatre directors dominated, and popularised theatre at the Source ( Ile – Ife, that is.)

In one of his many plays, the Tortoise, a slow, ugly and very crafty character was seen preparing to go on a journey and was asked if he must, and when he would return.

Without the slightest hint of shame, he retorted:”Not until I am disgraced”.

As Lasisi Olagunju would put it later, “theTortoise is that character who fights on both sides, plunging the world around him into needless wars and anguish. Seeing himself as a charmer who cannot fail, he was without any moderation in consumption or in his assumptions.”

Emefiele, like the Tortoise, never cared a hoot; not for Nigeria nor for Nigerians.

The Tortoise story is, therefore, analogous to his  harebrained currency re- design and swap policy which, not surprisingly, failed spectacularly, turning millions of Nigerians to worse than beggars, when they were actually, not dying on queues in banks, lining up to get paid as little as N5000.

However, concerning the ‘currency confiscation’ policy, it is President Mohammadu Buhari I pity the most.

Readers of this column, especially during his first two years in office, would remember how much I eulogised him.

Even though I later reconsidered my position and took all that back, I now, out of pity, earnestly wish he had left office even a day before Emefiele, and his co- conspirators, inflicted this currency deluge on Nigerians.

Who exactly did Garba Shehu think he was deceiving when he issued his meaningless story about President Buhari not directing Emefiele and Malami to flout the Supreme Court judgment on the matter?

Nigerians know that President Buhari is not hard of hearing but can we also say that he never one day saw, even on television, the thousands of Nigerians milling around empty ATMS, from morning till  night? Neither Buhari nor Enefiele was bothered that those children of perdition, those God forsaken Boko Haram elements and their sundry cousins, could have decided to vent their own anger on these hapless Nigerians, many of who hadn’t eaten for days, nor knew where the next meal would come from.

As I wrote earlier, I sincerely wish, for purposes of historical reckoning, that he had finished his tenure a day earlier than the Emefielian ‘mala fide’ because, truth be told, President Buhari was in the process of regaining something of his old aura amongst Nigerians. But as things now stand, generalised hunger, anger and utter delusion have wiped off all that possibility.

Talk of his huge infrastructural achievements now and Nigerians are more likely to point to the unprecedented national debt, mention the railways,  and you are likely to have Nigerians tell you they dare not risk their lives on a kidnapper- infesred rail line.

Nigerians have just been witnesses to the most inefficient duo of an arrogant Attorney – General and and an equally tactless CBN governor.

Only last week the defence in the P/ID 11B dollar arbitration case in London, raised serious issues of incompetence against the Attorney- General just as It will now take a new Attorney – General to let Nigerians know what and what have been sold, and for how much, of the humongous EFCC’s legal seizures.

The least said about Emefiele the better.

Having been  serving  his ‘real bosses’  better than he serves Nigeria, they were even prepared to make him President over us so he could cook more of his failed ‘rice pyramids’ which evaporated as soon as his presidential dream collapsed.Under him, the CBN had multi – dollar exchange rates over which

not even the World Bank or the IMF could restrain him.

For instance, the IMF’s Staff Concluding Statement on the 2022 Article IV Mission to Nigeria reiterated its past recommendations towards moving towards a unified and market-clearing exchange rate by dismantling the various exchange rate windows at the CBN, accompanied by clarity on exchange rate policy and supportive fiscal and monetary policies. That in the medium term, the CBN should step back from its role as main FX intermediator, limiting interventions to smoothing market volatility and to allow deposit money banks determine FX buy-sell rates, in collaboration with it. . They noted that an end to his crooked forex policy would help increase  revenue, thus solving a major Nigerian fiscal challenge. But all these meant nothing to our highly political CBN governor whose friends,

benefitting from the hopelessly skewed forex policy, din’t want it to  end, thus leaving a country struggling for forex inflow,  selling the limited amount it has at dubious rates.

Indeed as at the time the two leading world financial institutions were advising him, he was acquiring over a hundred cars for his chimeric presidential election campaign.

As in the case of the A-G, the incoming administration must make it a point of duty to let Nigerians know who exactly Emefiele is.

For now, he has received his comeuppance, having been thrown under the bus from his  olympian heights.

Indeed, if he knows what is good for him, he should simply resign, and give public service a long berth.

It is safe to say that while President Buhari looked askance, Godwin Emefiele took Nigeria down with himself.

It is now PBAT’s unalterable duty to lift her out of that wreckage and completely, positively re- engineer it the way majority of Nigerians crave.

The partnership, which aims to develop Nigeria’s green energy sector, is in line with the country’s renewable energy objectives and the global energy transition plan from fossil to green sources.

According to a statement issued by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima spoke yesterday when he received on a courtesy visit to the Presidential Villa, a German delegation led by a member of German Parliament and Hydrogen Commissioner, Federal Ministry of Education and Research, Mr Till Mansmann.

Underscoring the importance of strong partnership between Nigeria and Germany, the Vice President  said, “We cannot run away from the fact that sooner than later we have to do away with fossil fuels and resort to green energy for a sustainable world and an inclusive economic growth.

“We appreciate you and there is ample opportunity for us to partner towards the development of the 130 billion-dollars global hydrogen market projected by the World Bank to grow at 9% per annum,” he said.

On the potentials in hydrogen development, VP Shettima expressed optimism that if Nigeria gets its acts right, the entire African continent will equally get it right.

He noted: “Hydrogen has the potential of revolutionizing a lot of industries in Nigeria, including fertilizer production. The Federal Ministry of Science and Technology is ready to partner with authorities in Germany to drive the process towards developing the hydrogen market in Nigeria and beyond.

“Partnering to develop the hydrogen market in Nigeria will positively impact the rest of the African continent given its potentials and position. The potentials are here in Nigeria.

“When Nigeria gets its acts right, Africa will get it right too. You have a partner in Nigeria, in President Tinubu, you have a partner that you can trust. Leadership is about the ability to provide ideas to the problems of a nation,” he added.

The VP commended Germany for the sacrifice and empathy the European country has shown towards other countries in different areas, noting that “though not endowed with a lot of natural resources, Germany is blessed with the human capital that has made the country a global leader across diverse fields, including technology and devotion to ethics.”

Earlier, Head of the German Delegation/Member of German Parliament and Hydrogen Commissioner, Mansmann, said collaboration with Nigeria and institutions like the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) is crucial for achieving the goals outlined in Germany’s National Hydrogen Strategy.

He said, “Nigeria is a very important partner for the global transformation of energy. If you want to fight climate change, it makes no sense if one country alone goes its own pathway. We need to come together in a lot of cooperations in technology, science and human resources.”

    • Partnership to drive new listings

Nigeria and United Kingdom (UK) have launched an intensive partnership process aimed at unlocking fundings for strategic investments and deepen listings on the Nigerian capital market.

The partnership, being implemented through the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) and Mobilising Institutional Capital Through Listed Product Structures (MOBILIST), is being facilitated by the UK Government’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

The partners are expected to meet tomorrow with a high-level audience of Nigeria’s captains of industry, regulatory bodies, government agencies, policymakers, financial advisors, capital market solicitors, and thought leaders to intensify discussions around the core objectives of the collaboration.

The partnership aimed at supporting investment solutions that align with global goals for sustainable development.

Analysts said the partnership could help channel finance to high-impact infrastructural projects in Nigeria, especially in the areas of power, roads, agriculture, housing, credit system and financial technologies among others.

Alongside British International Investments and the Private Infrastructure Development Group, MOBILIST is a part of the UK’s British Investment Partnerships toolkit.

MOBILIST had invested in the initial public offering (IPO) of Thai Credit Bank to enable its listing on the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET).

The UK government had also through MOBILIST, provided £24.5 million of seed capital to the Asian Energy Impact Trust, enabling it to list on the London Stock Exchange (LSE). Formerly ThomasLloyd Energy Impact Trust, Asian Energy Impact Trust was the first company on the LSE to be dedicated to investing in sustainable energy infrastructure projects that can help alleviate Asia’s expanding climate change issues.

MOBILIST also invested in preference shares in Bayfront Infrastructure Capital IV, the fourth infrastructure asset-backed securities transaction sponsored by Bayfront Infrastructure Management, a Singapore-based platform with a mandate to invest in and distribute project and infrastructure loans.

The Bayfront transaction involved the securitisation of a portfolio of project and infrastructure loans and bonds into infrastructure asset-backed securities, which were later listed on the Singapore Exchange (SGX Group).

MOBILIST had committed an anchor investment of up to $20.4 million in the special purpose vehicle and received a final allocation of $5 million, after MOBILIST’s commitment aroused robust investors’ subscriptions. Bayfront is expected to catalyse more than $410.3 million of institutional investment in strategic infrastructure projects across Asia.

Acting Chief Executive Officer, Nigerian Exchange (NGX), Jude Chiemeka, said discussions at tomorrow’s meeting would focus on ways to integrating MOBILIST’s innovative strategies within Nigeria’s economic landscape, with emphasis on capital market’s critical role in sustainable development.

According to him, the partnership aimed at leveraging MOBILIST’s expertise in equity capital, technical assistance, and the support of the UK government to identify barriers hindering public market listings and explore potential solutions.

The partnership could help Nigeria to secure long-term funding for its credit economy, infrastructural and agricultural initiatives, providing funding and technical supports that open up the vast opportunities to all Nigerians.

  • Nigeria seeks participation in $260b global drones market

Nigeria seeks participation in $260b global drones market

Nigerian companies are seeking active participation in the evolving global drones, robotics and artificial intelligence technology market set to hit $260 billion  in the next six years.

Estimated currently at $35.28 billion, the value chain experts say  has the transformative capacity to enhance industry performance in agriculture, mining, health services, delivery/logistics, rescue, security, inspection, surveillance, survey , mapping, entertainment and sports.

Investigations reveal that drones, robotics  and allied value chains  have  potential  to create jobs in small and large scale businesses.

But, for Nigerian companies to optimise the huge potential from the value chain, experts have canvassed the formulation of the national plan / framework to deepen participation.

Speaking in an interview, convener of the  Drone Technology Conference & Exhibition, Mr Fortune Idu said the Federal Government must move fast by putting in place an institutional framework that will guide the regulations of drone operations in Nigeria.

Such a framework/ policy Idu   said should encompass a window for all government security and regulatory agencies to define their responsibilities in the fast evolving value chain where drones are  utilised.

He said though the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), has developed regulations for drone operations in Nigeria, he noted that the bulk of drone operators play outside the aviation sector, a development that required a holistic approach  to harmonise the  scope of the business.

He said the importance of developing a strong regulatory framework has become compelling as the current laws governing drone operations cannot adequately manage such a fast – moving industry.

Idu emphasized : “There is more to drones than flying for recreation and visual line-of-sight operations. The future of this sector is still unfolding.

‘It is expanding rapidly and will revolutionize air transportation.

On his part, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Aviation & Aerospace Development, Dr Emmanuel Meribole said the Federal Government will scale up measures through regulation to put Nigeria in a leading position in the drones market on the continent.

Meribole said : “  African nations like Rwanda, Uganda, and Ghana are actively participating in this global race for leadership in drones  technology. Recent regulatory developments, including amendments to ICAO annexes and the approval of new procedures, lay the foundation for an international regulatory framework for the  operations.”

But, he said  Nigeria is actively engaging personnel of relevant authorities to ensure the regulation  prioritizes safety and security above other  considerations.

Meribole said the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) , has been mandated to  provide robust oversight for drones operations with relevant provisions in its regulations, which  sets out requirements for certification, registration, operations, and surveillance of drones.

He said : “ Additionally, we have encouraged the creation of a dedicated drones  unit within the NCAA and the integration of drones  operations into national civil aviation policy, demonstrating the government’s commitment to responsible use of drones .

“ We call on our research centres to develop solutions for applications and production capabilities to make Nigeria a leading player in this industry and not a dumping ground. Collaboration between government, industry, and research institutions is essential for maximizing the benefits of drones  technology while addressing potential risks.

“ While the Ministry of Aviation & Aerospace Development desires the advancement associated with the use of drones, focus must at all times remain on protecting civil aviation and countering their exploitation by non-State armed groups and terrorists.

“We must find a balance between the significant benefits drones  offer across various industries and incidental risks to aviation infrastructure and national security.”
