  • Labour gives FG two weeks to resolve minimum wage logjam

The leadership of organised labour has given the Federal Government one week for its team to resume discussion on the negotiation of the consequential adjustment for workers in order to conclude the process.

Labour said that the nonchalant attitude of the federal government negotiating team had dragged negotiations for consequential wages adjustment for workers unduly.

It also urged the government to commence immediate implementation of the signed agreement on consequential adjustment of public workers’ salaries with effect from 18th of April 2019 when the new national minimum wage of N30,000 per month was signed into law.

It threatened to embark on strike if its demands were not met before the close of work on Wednesday 16th this month.

Labour’s positions were made known in a statement jointly signed by the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Ayuba Wabba, President, Trade Union Congress, Quadri Olaleye, Ag. Chairman, Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC-Trade Union Side), Simon Anchaver and JNPSNC Secretary, Alade Bashir Lawal after a meeting at Labour House, Abuja.

It noted that the offer by government for salary adjustment of 11 percent for public workers on salary grade level 07 – 14 and 6.5 percent consequential increase for public workers on grade level 15 – 17 was not acceptable to Nigerian workers.

It urged the government to enter into an agreement with labour to the effect that salary of officers on grade 07-14 should be reviewed upward by 29 percent while that of officers on grade level 15-17 should be reviewed upwards by 24 percent.

“We view the position of government as a show of insensitivity to the plight of workers and an attempt to collect with the left hand what government had offered with the right hand,” it said in the statement.

It said that organised labour had out of its patriotic disposition demonstrated a great deal of restraint, consideration and patience with government on the implementation of the minimum wage.

    The statement reads: “At the end of our deliberation, the leadership of organized labour in Nigeria resolved as follows; The offer by government for salary adjustment of 11% for public workers on salary grade level 07 – 14 and 6.5% consequential increase for public workers on grade level 15 – 17 is not acceptable to Nigerian workers. We view the position of government as a show of insensitivity to the plight of workers and an attempt to collect with the left hand what government had offered with the right hand;

    “We demand the reconvening of the meeting of the committee negotiating the consequential adjustment with a view to concluding the process that started on the 28th of May, 2019 within one week;

“Entering into an agreement with labour to the effect that salary of officers on grade 07-14 should be reviewed upward by 29% while that of officers on grade level 15-17 should be reviewed upwards by 24%; and

“Commence immediate implementation of the signed agreement on consequential adjustment of public workers’ salaries with effect from 18th of April 2019 when the new national minimum wage of N30,000 per month was signed into law.

“In conclusion, the leadership of organized labour in Nigeria wishes to categorically state that the leadership of labour cannot guarantee industrial peace and harmony in the country if our demands are not met at the close of work on Wednesday, 16th October, 2019.”

  • JUST IN: Many feared killed as bus plunges into Ogun river

Many persons have been feared killed after a passenger bus plunged into River Ososa in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State on Wednesday evening.

It was gathered that the incident occurred around 4:30pm while the bus with yet to be specified number of passengers was travelling on the Sagamu- Ijebu Ode-Benin Expressway.

The Nation reports the unfortunate accident occurred barely a week after a non-academic staff bus of Tai Solarin College of Education (TASCE), Ijebu Ode plunged into the same river.

At the time of the report, divers and rescuers were still battling to save occupants of the vehicle which was said to have lost control before flipping into the river.

It was gathered that the bus driver had attempted to overtake another vehicle on the road but suddenly had a bad tyre causing it to fall into the river.

Confirming the incident, Ogun Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) said it was as a result of over speeding.

Sector Commander Clement Oladele told The Nation that high water levels occasioned by the heavy downpour on Tuesday was making the rescue operation more difficult.

He said: “The FRSC rescue team moved in immediately to the scene for rescue operations. The team include FRSC professional divers who have dived into the river to conduct rescue operations underneath

“The divers are still working hard to recover the passengers in the ill-fated  vehicle, which is made more difficult due to the risen level of the river caused by yesterday’s heavy rains, around Ijebu-Ode area.

“The bus was travelling from the  Sagamu end of the expressway towards Ijebu Ode section.”

Expressing worry over the incidents, Oladele appealed to motorists to drive cautiously especially around bridges, considering that the expressway was undergoing rehabilitation.

“Motorists are therefore strongly advised to reduce speed when approaching bridges to prevent unpleasant situation such as this.

“The rescue operations would not be called off till the vehicle and the occupants are brought out of the river.

“I also appeal to RCC to ensure that the safety railings around the bridge and other bridges in that axis are

quickly replaced. Illuminated warning signs should be provided around the bridge and the depression at the foot of the bridge quickly repaired to prevent re-occurrence,” he said.

  • ‘Moghalu’s appointment best Independence gift to Southeast’

The Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO) has hailed President Muhammadu Buhari for appointing Dr. George Moghalu as managing Director/CEO of National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA).

Chairman of Anambra State chapter Vincent Ezekwueme, in a statement yesterday, described the appointment as the best independence gift to the Southeast.

He said the people would remain grateful to the President for ‘his patriotic reintegration processes’.

The statement reads: “This is a welcome development and cheering news to the people of the Southeast and Nigerians. This is the best Independence gift to the Southeast. The President has provided the opportunity towards resuscitation of the moribund Onitsha seaport.”

Ezekwueme urged Moghalu to live up to the expectation of the President and Nigerians by being selfless in the discharge of his assignments.

“Moghalu as a moralist, selfless, patriotic, humble, honest and servant leader must bear the interest and social wellbeing of the citizens at heart by rehabilitating the decrepit and deplorable Onitsha seaport to boost economic activities in the Southeast, as well as give them a sense of belonging,” he added.

He appealed to the President to extend similar appointments to the family of former Senate President, Chuba Okadigbo, who was his political ally and running mate in 2003.

  • PDP rejects Buhari’s plans to return toll gates

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has vehemently opposed plans by President Muhammadu Buhari to return toll gates on major highways across the country.

The party lamented that the “insensitive idea” coming in the midst of excruciating economic hardship and high costs of living, “occasioned by the incompetence and harsh policies of the Buhari administration” is completely ill-conceived and anti-people.

In a statement Wednesday by the spokesman for the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, the party insisted that at best, the idea amounted to “executive bullying”, which the PDP said, cannot be justified under any guise.

The party said it would lead to increase in costs of goods and services across the country.

The statement said: “Only recently, President Buhari approved the increase of Value Added Tax (VAT) from 5% to 7.2% despite outcry by Nigerians, who are also being made to pay exorbitant tariffs for electricity and other essential services.

“Since President Buhari came into office in 2015, his administration had continued to increase prices and impose all manner of levies on Nigerians which proceeds are being frittered by the cabal in the presidency leading to a bleeding economy and despondency among the citizenry”.

The PDP said instead of putting more pressure on already impoverished Nigerians by introducing toll gates at this point in time, President Buhari should exert himself, seek ways of creating wealth out of the abundant resources at the disposal of his administration or make haste to surrender the reign of governance to more competent hands.

“Nigerians could recall that the PDP administration, in keeping with our determination to ensure the wellbeing and economic prosperity of our citizens, dismantled toll gates, cut tax profiles and applied our energies towards wealth creation.

“It is therefore certain that if our nation were under a PDP administration, as desired by Nigerians, competent hands would have been on the deck to proffer ways to create wealth for governance instead of turning our citizens into vassals who are overburdened by heavy taxes.

“The PDP states that it is lamentable that at the time Nigerians ought to be enjoying the benefits of the Atiku Abubakar economic recovery and wealth creation blueprint, they are faced with suppressive policies,” the statement added.

The party charged President Buhari to immediately rescind the decision, saying it’s not in the best interest of Nigerians.

  • Jonathan: Left in the cold

How relevant is former President Goodluck Jonathan in Bayelsa State politics? His preferred governorship aspirant lost at the recent primary. Also, his choice as running mate to the flagbearer could not fly. Senior Correspondent MIKE ODIEGWU examines the plight of the former leader, who is now left in the cold in his home state.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan is admired, not because he was an excellent leader when he was in power, but because he conceded defeat after losing the 2015 election.

That singular act of surrendering power to President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) endeared him to many world leaders and institutions. Many people, therefore, described him as the hero of democracy.

Jonathan had meteoric rise in power. The late former Governor Diepreye Alamieyeiseigha of Bayelsa State made him his deputy. The Otuoke-born leader rose from deputy governor to become governor, following the impeachment of Alamieyeseigha. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo made him the Vice-President to the late President Umaru Yar’Adua. He became the first President from the minority oil-producing tribe, following, the death of Yar’Adua.

But, all is not well with the former president in Bayelsa, his home state. Despite his experience and political profile, Jonathan has been boxed into a corner under the leadership of Governor Seriake Dickson.

In fact, Jonathan and Dickson, hitherto belonged to the same political family, the Green Movement (GM). Members of the movement, including the King of Opume in Ogbia, King A.J. Turner, and a former Chief of Staff, Chief Dikivie Ikiogha were regarded as the kingmakers.

As governor, Jonathan made Dickson his Commissioner for Justice. When the cabal, which consisted mainly of the GM crafted a plot to oust former Governor Timipre Sylva in 2011, Jonathan, who was President, picked Dickson, who was then in the House of Representatives as the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to replace Sylva.

Dickson, was one of the brains behind the Doctrine of Necessity that elevated Jonathan to the Presidency, following the death of Yar’Adua.

No sooner had Dickson emerged  governor than his relationship with Jonathan hit the rock. The former First Lady and wife of Jonathan, Patience, authored and acted the script that led to the collapse of the relationship due to her insatiable quest to control the governor and the state.

The former First Lady and her foot soldiers, especially Jonathan’s Special Adviser, Domestics Affairs, Waripamowei Dudafa, allegedly tried to run an alternative government in Bayelsa, sidelining the governor in most of their activities. They threatened Dickson with impeachment.

The Abuja forces, hiding under the Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria (TAN), tried to run a parallel government in Bayelsa. To assuage the former First Lady, Dickson made him a Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education and bore all the outrage that resulted from the decision.

But, Dickson was not happy that Jonathan failed to control his wife and call her to order. The former President rebuffed all entreaties by Dickson that Patience should learn how to respect democratic authorities. The governor fought back by removing all the vestiges of Jonathan and his wife in his government. He carried out a cabinet reshuffle and replaced appointees recommended by the former first family. Therefore, Jonathan’s reverence and relevance in Bayelsa politics diminished under Dickson administration.

The governor, however, survived the presidential onslaught. The victory of the APC and President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015 gave the governor a lifeline. In fact, there were reports that some PDP leaders in Government House popped champagnes immediately news filtered that Jonathan lost the presidential election. If Jonathan had won, Dickson stood no chance of flying the flag of the PDP for the 2015 election.

Though the governor organised a grand reception for Jonathan and his wife, he was said to have learnt his lessons from his previous experience as he decided to own and manage his political structures. Dickson weeded off Jonathan’s sympathisers while constituting fresh executive committees of the PDP at the state, local government and ward levels.

Shortly after his re-election, the governor for the fist time spoke publicly about his travails under Jonathan’s presidency. Speaking on 2017 Isaac Adaka Boro Day, the governor lamented that his Ijaw people, who surrounded the former President, contributed to the downfall of his Presidency. He said such persons wasted the six years the Ijaw occupied the Presidency.

Dickson said that the ministers and other presidential aides from Bayelsa were after their selfish interests, thus losing the unique opportunity of attracting development to their domains. Speaking before laying wreaths at the tomb of Boroh in the Heroes’ Park, Dickson recalled that the persons who served in the Presidency for six years failed to work with him in the quest to bring development to the state.

Instead, he said they were preoccupied with “devilish plot” of unseating him and installing another governor in his stead.

“They suffered from the Bayelsa-Ijaw disease of pull-him-down syndrome,” Dickson said. The governor’s statement caused ripples in the state as persons against him interpreted it to mean an attack on Jonathan, his benefactor. It further created bad blood between him and the former President.

The diminishing political status of Jonathan worsened during the last House of Assembly and National Assembly elections in Bayelsa. The governor single-handedly decided the candidates of the PDP in all the state and federal constituencies. All the Jonathan’s preferred aspirants failed to clinch the tickets of the PDP.

Jonathan’s preferred aspirants, who defected to other parties to contest the elections, performed woefully at the poll. They were trounced by either the candidates of Dickson or those of the APC. There was silence in PDP when Jonathan’s senatorial district fell to the APC in the last election. Results of the elections showed poor performance of the PDP in Jonathan’s Otuoke community in Ogbia Local Government Area and his East Senatorial District comprising Ogbia, Nembe and Brass local government areas.

The senatorial candidate of the APC, Mr. Degi Eremienyo Wagara, and the APC candidate for Nembe-Brass Federal Constituency, Isreal Sunny-Igoli, won at the district. Jonathan was said to have backed Senator Barigha Amange, who lost the PDP ticket, but defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to contest the senatorial poll. But again, he failed to win the poll.

Following the abysmal performance of the PDP in Jonathan’s zone, some stakeholders accused the former President of anti-party activities.

The Ogbia Renaissance (OR) said in a statement by its chairman, Mr Obhioru Mitanoni, said Jonathan, his wife, A.J Turner and other PDP chieftains committed brazen anti party activities. Mitanoni claimed Jonathan secretly sponsored candidates of the APC, Accord Party and the ADC.

Jonathan was rendered politically impotent in the build-up to the governorship primary of the PDP for the November 16 election. Before the primary Dickson promised to consult the former President to decide the flag bearer. Both leaders were seen together in public functions in what many people described as strange romance. However, their political differences tore them apart.

Undoubtedly, Jonathan was said to have preferred a former Managing Director, Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Chief Timi Alaibe for the PDP ticket. There were reports that both Jonathan and former President Olusegun Obasanjo appealed to Dickson to allow Alaibe to fly the flag of the party. But Dickson insisted that only a member of his Restoration Team would get the ticket of the party.

Though Jonathan made no public declaration supporting Alaibe, all his foot soldiers and his political associates including the king of Opume, A.J. Turner publicly identified with the aspirant. In fact, Turner, a monarch, accompanied Alaibe to Abuja to collect his expression of interest and nomination forms. But they were up against Dickson, who had mapped out strategies to disgrace them at the internal poll. The governor has always said he would retire some old politicians from politics.

To further ensure the emergence of his preferred candidate, Dickson formed his personal political family, which he tagged the Restoration Caucus of the PDP. It was under the platform he delivered a Senator representing the Central Senatorial District, Douye Diri, as the candidate of the PDP for the forthcoming governorship election.  Jonathan and his co-travelers were stunned at the defeat of Alaibe at the primary election.

In his quest to be in charge, the governor also shut out Jonathan from the running mate slot of the PDP. Despite calls from many stakeholders to honour Jonathan with the slot by picking anybody from Ogbia, Jonathan’s local government area, Dickson remained adamant as he personally chose Senator Lawrence Ewrujakpor, who hails from his Sagbama Local Government Area.

By all indications, Jonathan has no political structure in Bayelsa to accomplish any interest, unless he goes cap in hands to beg Dickson. Many people are worried that the former president has no stake beyond being a member of the PDP in the party’s quest to retain the state.

But analysts said Dickson should not be blamed for the travails of Jonathan. They cited the alleged abysmal performance of the former President in Bayelsa and the Niger Delta. According to them, there is nothing tangible on ground to remind the state and the Niger Delta that they once had the office of the presidency.

Others said Jonathan’s Ogbia local government is an eloquent testimony that he failed his people and would never attract any grassroots political support. They said it was inexplicable that there are no basic infrastructures  in Ogbia.

But, Dickson has maintained that there is no love lost between him and Jonathan. He said they were in good terms, insisting that their cordial relationship was displayed during the last state functions.

“That event should have shown to most people that there is no problem between us. He is my elder brother and leader and he will continue to receive his respect. Even in this transition. That event shows that we are united when it comes to what we do for our people.

“There is no relationship that had lasted longer than our relationship. There is no issue. But, aides and people around make careless statements and they manipulate stories and take advantage of the proximity they have with the former President.”

  • Nigeria at 59: Nigerians react to Independence celebration

Nigerians have reacted to Nigeria’s independence day celebration. The reactions which trended on twitter as #NigeriaAt59, had over 100k reactions from Nigerians home and abroad.

    Below are the reactions:

    @segalink

Today should be a day of colorful celebration when we tell our children stories about the labors of our heroes past and how we are working to build on it. But sincerely, Nigeria is far from independence and we are not free. We are under the worst of aberrations ruining lives. Most of our respected voices have assumed the “siddon look” position in fear of being harassed, violated and persecuted for speaking the truth. Govt have lost their conscience and ruined our institutions with the installation of their demagogues. They no longer serve Nigeria.

    @DrJoeAbah

At 59, one undeniable fact is that we have not built the country we are capable of building. The question is: Beyond partisan politics, what do we do next? #NigeriaAt59

  • N84.6m fraud: EFCC grills INEC accountant, three others

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested and quizzed four officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for alleged diversion of N84, 696,000 meant for the payment of ad hoc staff engaged for the 2019 presidential and governorship elections in the country.

The suspects, who were grilled by the Sokoto Zonal Office of the anti –graft agency, are from Zamfara State office of INEC.

The suspects are the Administrative Secretary, Hassan Sidi Aliyu; the Head of Operations,   Hussain Jafar; the State Accountant, Abdullahi Yusuf Abubakar, and Abdulmumin Usman.

The Presidency on Tuesday night insisted that President Muhammadu Buhari is not interested in seeking third term in office.

A statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, said that President Buhari would leave office at the end of his second term in 2023.

He was reacting to media reports on presidential term limits.

He said “The Presidency wishes to correct internet-based gossip and un-informed media commentary regarding presidential term limits, given credence by so-called support groups, staging street demonstrations asking President Muhammadu Buhari to do a third term.

“There is not even the faintest possibility that this will change.

“It is important to note that there was a past attempt to change the Constitution to allow for the-then incumbent president to stand for a third term. That attempt was wrong, unconstitutional – and rightly rebuffed. No such attempt will happen under this President.

Barely three days after his arrest, the Department of State Security Services(DSS) has handed over a former Chairman of the Pension Reform Task Team, Mr. Abdul-Rasheed Maina to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC).

Maina, who was looking pensive, was brought to the anti-graft agency at about 5.30pm.

As at press time, the suspect was being quizzed over alleged N2billion biometrics contract.

It was also learnt that Maina was being interrogated over choice assets in Kado Estate in Abuja, some properties in Kaduna and a large farm in Keffi.

A top source, who spoke in confidence, said: “Maina, who we had earlier declared wanted, was brought to EFCC by the DSS a few hours ago.

“The security agency handed him over after the completion of its profiling on him.

“You know Maina has been hiding in Dubai, UAE and some neighbouring countries and there is need to de-brief him on certain security challenges associated with him.

“For instance, intelligence report indicated that Maina was asked how he has always succeeded in sneaking in and out of the country and his connection with a safe house in Abuja.

“But as soon as he was handed over to EFCC, detectives isolated issues for him on the N2billion biometrics contact. He was also asked to make statement on the funding of the defunct the Pension Reform Task Team.

“He has also been asked to explain how he came about choice assets in Abuja and Kaduna.

“The investigation might also be extended to his activities as a former director in Customs, Immigration and Prisons Office (CIPPO) which he superintended with huge cash flow.”

Responding to a question, the EFCC source said: “He will soon be arraigned in court because we have already preferred charges against him.

“As far back as July 21, 2015, Maina was already arraigned before a Federal High Court on a 24-count charge with a former Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mr. Steve Oronsaye, Osarenkhoe Afe and Fredrick Hamilton Global Services Limited.

“He is expected to face trial for charges bordering on procurement fraud and obtaining by false pretence.

“What detectives are doing now is to obtain a statement from him on some findings about him before the court proceedings.”

Asked of his status, the source added: “Maina was in pensive mood, he never expected that the law will catch up with him.”

Maina was picked up by DSS operatives at a hotel in Abuja.

The EFCC had in 2017, declared Maina wanted, following his refusal to honour the commission’s invitations.

But in his bid to evade the long arm of the law, Maina, on September 5, 2018, in a suit no: FHC/ABJ/CS/957/2918, asked the court to decide whether the Commission can lawfully exercise powers of declaring him wanted, either on its official website or any other media platform, or “harass him.”

But Justice Folasade Giwa Ogunbanjo of the Federal High Court restrained the anti- graft commission from declaring Maina wanted.

She also gave an order of perpetual injunction, restraining the EFCC and its affiliates or related bodies from further declaring Maina wanted in relation to the issue of the pension scam.

The EFCC however said the judgment must not be allowed to stand and filed an appeal at the Court of Appeal.
