Chinese girl rides bicycle from Morocco to Lagos

A Chinese female cyclist, Huang Shuang, who rode from Morocco to Lagos, Nigeria, within five months, says she is convinced that anybody can achieve anything he or she determines to do.

Huang, also known as CICI, told our reporters in Lagos on Monday that she was inspired to embark on ‘`cycling around the world’’ after riding around her country.

The cyclist said that her experience in China motivated her to begin global cycling in America where she covered about 5,500 km in two months.

“I am glad that I have also been able to ride from Morocco to Lagos, Nigeria.

“ This is an indication that irrespective of our sex, we can achieve anything we set out to do.

“The whole idea about my cycling started when, one day, I decided to embark on a cycling trip around my country, China.

“After the trip around China, I was motivated to take my first cycling around the world to America, where I covered about 5,500km in two months.

“Now, I am in Lagos from Morocco, after I flew from America to France, where I cycled around Europe for four months, before taking ferry from Spain to Morocco,’’ she said.

Huang said that she always travelled with money, noodles, tent, sleeping bag, clothes and bicycle repair accessories.

The cyclist, who left Morocco for Lagos on Sept. 6, 2017, said that her trip was fascinating though she experienced tiredness, robbery, accidents and sleeping under bridges and in gas stations.

Huang said that she crossed the desert within six days and was well received by many African villages.

The cyclist said that, sometimes, she happily ate local meals made by the villagers.

‘`I have happily sung and danced with children in different African villages and communities where I passed the nights or stopped to cook.

“I have seen the most beautiful sunset, the most stunning mountain views, breath-taking lakes and virgin forests across Africa.

‘`My trip has also exposed me to many African children still living in poverty, hunger, without education and basic amenities,’’ she said.

The Chinese said that she would be cycling to about 33 countries in the next three years, adding that she would continue her cycling from Lagos to Cameroon, Gabon, Congo, Angola, Namibia, South Africa, East Africa and some other countries.

Huang said that her cycling was also informed by her desire to interact with children in African communities before inaugurating a free lunch for them in 2018.

The cyclists said that she hoped to raise some money for the benefit to about 2,000 children.

Karisen said the situation therefore called for urgent, immediate and long term solution to the problems of irregular migration.

He also said that there was the need for shared responsibilities as well as bringing offenders to justice, adding that there was need to redouble efforts to dialogue on the best possible ways to adressing issue of migration.
The Senate President, Bukola Saraki, in his opening remarks, said that the issue of irregular migration and human Trafficking had become the bane of the nation’s existence as Nigeria currently ranked 23rd in EU irregular migration index.

Saraki said the issue had become a Nigerian disaster reference point as a country, ranked fifth among countries crossing the Mediterranean sea, with an estimated 10, 000 reported to have lost their lives in the process.

He said the roundtable was to serve as spring board to stem the tide, saying the summit would help identify reasons for irregular migration and human trafficking and profer solution on the way forward.

The senate president said the government was doing its best to liberate Nigerians from the slave trade going on in Libya as many lives had been lost in the cause of irregular migration, noting that the time was apt to end it.

He said that there was the need to urgently begin to address the issue as well as work and collaborate with the EU to stem the tide.

He said the Edo government considered it a variance to the culture and value of the people hence, a taskforce was set up in the state to handle the issue.

  • Ogun community laments epileptic power supply, high tariff

Ogun community laments epileptic power supply, high tariff

Some residents of the Kajola Community of Onihale in the Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun have lamented the epileptic power supply and high tarriff by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC).

In interviews with our reporters on Monday, they said that the IBEDC was deliberately punishing the community with epileptic power supply as other communities like Onihale and Ogungbade were enjoying steady power supply.

They also said that the IBEDC had since been bringing high tariffs to the community for the power they did not use and as they have refused to pay, the company usually disconnects their wires from the electricity poles.

The residents, therefore, are appealing to the state government to help them to look into the matter as the electrification project which cost over N7millin, was bankrolled by the community.

Mr Adisa Akande, a landlord in the community, said that the epileptic power supply to the community was worrisome, as several efforts to make the IBEDC Unit at Iyana Ilogbo to redress the situation have proven abortive.

“We do not have power supply more than three-times in a month, so how do we explain this when other communities around us have steady power supply?,’’ he lamented.

Another Landlady, Mrs Deborah Akinfolahan, said that the high tariff had become unbearable as the IBEDC used to bring an average of over N3,000 monthly bills to residents, which she said, was not commensurate to the power supply.

“We are not enjoying power, yet they bring over N3,000 as bills, every month. This is unfair to us in this community,’’ she said.

Mr Bisi Fashola, another Landlord, also said that the IBEDC refused to distribute prepaid meters to residents in the area because they were used to distributing high tariffs in the community.

“The IBEDC has refused to install prepaid meters in this community, yet they distribute high tariffs which they cannot explain or defend,’’ he said.

Another resident, Mrs Bola Apanisile, said that the officials of the IBEDC Unit in Iyana Ilogbo flooded the community since last week and have disconnected virtually all the electricity supply cables in the community from the poles.

Mr Ishola Kolawole, a local chieftain, said that the community jointly bankrolled the electrification project which cost over N7million, which was inaugurated in 2015 but wondered why the IBEDC has opted to give the community epileptic power supply.

He appealed to the state government to step into the matter as all efforts to address the issue with the Iyana Ilogbo IBEDC Unit in charge of the area have proved abortive.

Mr Kazeem Salaudeen, the IBEDC Business Manager, Iyana Ilogbo Unit, who said that he was aware of issues in the community, however, declined to speak with our reporter.

  • AFN official denies bias in selection of Commonwealth team

AFN official denies bias in selection of Commonwealth team

Olalekan Soetan, a renowned athletics statistician on Monday has debunked the accusations that the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) Commonwealth Games team list was biased.

Soetan, who was among the selection team, told our reporter that the Sports Ministry gave AFN limited slot, as such only athletes with medal prospects were selected.

“The ministry, which is the sponsor of the Nigerian team to the Games, gave AFN limited slot for athletes, and then we picked the team as regards our medals prospects.

“Our national trial for Commonwealth games was used mainly for team selection.

“Yes, we considered some who could not realistically come home for the trials but with outstanding performance or prospects for excellent performance.

“Let’s not forget that AFN set a standard which very few met, yet we selected athletes based on merits and some on real prospects,” he said.’

Soetan dismissed those accusing the AFN of bias as mere mischief makers.

“The few people that are making a scene are mischief makers. For example, a coach, who has never trained his personal athletes to make Nigerian team and pouched some to failure at trials is saying he has jurisdiction,” he said.

The official explained that the likes of Oluwatobiloba Amusan and Blessing Okagbare are tested athletes, unless proved otherwise.

“Amusan and Okagbare are tested athletes, meanwhile, Okagbare is only going to feature in the relay and Tobi is our surest medal prospect in 100m Hurdles.”

The AFN had released the names of 37 athletes for the Commonwealth Games scheduled for April 4-15, in Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia.

The athletics event starts from April 8-15.

  • Miyetti Allah canvases for peace with South East communities

Miyetti Allah canvases for peace with South East communities

Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), South-east zone met in Enugu on Sunday and assured South-Easterners of peaceful co-existence between them and their host communities.

They also assured that the Fulani herdsmen have no grudges with the south-east states and dispelled the rumors that the herdsmen were planning to attack Anambra and Enugu states.

At a meeting the association held weekend in Enugu, the zonal chairman, Gidado Sadiq in an address to participant drawn from the five south-east states regretted that the presence of a Fulani man was regarded as a threat to any community.

He solicited that the Fulani man should be regarded as any Nigerians who can freely go to anywhere and perform his business. The group explained that they were  in the southeast states to look for greener pastures to feed their cattle.

“We are not here to terrorize anyone, but we’re scared of people coming under the guise of the Fulani herdsmen to unleashed terror on our hosts. We advise our members to be watchful and report to us any strange face around them. We also implore the general public to be vigilant and not to allow anyone to destroy the peaceful co-existence we are enjoying,” stressed the group.

The group was full of praises of the governors of the south-east, saying that the governors are peace-loving people. “We wanted our host communities to appreciate the efforts by the governors of the states.

The governors are peace loving people and I continue to confess that  if other governors in other regions can emulate the footsteps of the governors of the South East, particularly those of Enugu and Anambra states, there will be no confrontation between cattle herdsmen and farmers.

“Everybody should be given a fair judgment.  If a Fulani man allows his cattle to destroy people’s farm, he should be punished based on the offense he committed or paid adequate compensation to the farmer. In the other hand, if a cow was killed by a farmer or anybody from the community, the person will pay the value of the cow that he killed, and anybody who did wrong, whether it is a Fulani man or a native, he will be identified through his leaders.

“We also warn our members to be very careful with the farmer’s crops and when they are migrating from one state to the other, they should inform the States leaders where they are passing through. We warn our members to stop crossing across the border of a state and destroy and run back to another state. More especially people usually come from Ebonyi state to destroy farms in Enugu and run back to Ebonyi state likewise those from Enugu go to Ebonyi and run back to Enugu”, Sadiq admonished.

  • SERAP asks Buhari to take TI’s corruption ranking as ‘wake-up call’

SERAP asks Buhari to take TI’s corruption ranking as ‘wake-up call’

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to see the Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index (CPI), of the country as a wake-up call to renew its oft-expressed commitment and raise its game to fight both grand and petty corruption and end the legacy of impunity rather than simply dismissing the survey as ‘fiction’.”

According to Transparency International’s report, the perception of corruption has worsened under President Muhammadu Buhari. The report showed that the perception of corruption in Nigeria worsened between 2016 and 2017. But the presidency has criticized the global watchdog, saying that TI was publishing fiction.

Reacting to the development, SERAP in a statement by its deputy director Timothy Adewale said, “While TI’s index only measures perceptions of corruption, their findings correspond substantially with the reality of impunity of perpetrators, as demonstrated by the low conviction rate, the authorities’ slowness to adopt and implement critical reforms, appearance of selectivity in the anti-corruption fight, apparent complicity of key officials and cover-up, as well as unaddressed alleged corruption against several state governors.

The organization urged the authorities to take the report seriously and use it as an opportunity to raise their game in their efforts to rid our country of corruption and underdevelopment.”

“The government should make no mistake about this: Nigerians know corruption when they see it. Rather than simply criticizing TI as publishing fiction or going after its board members, the government should accept the fact that its oft-expressed commitment to fight corruption has not gone to plan.”

The statement read in part: “The CPI may not be perfect, and in fact no index is. The CPI may not show actual evidence of corruption in the country, but perceptions are commonly a good indicator of the real level of corruption. In any case, the devastating effects of corruption in virtually all sectors providing essential public services are too glaring for Nigerians to ignore.

“While the government may have blocked some leakages in the systems and reduced the level of impunity witnessed under the previous administrations, it has not done enough to address longstanding cases of corruption, and the appearance of selectivity in the prosecution of corruption allegations especially when such cases involve those close to the seat of power. Today, corruption still constitutes one of the greatest threats to the country’s sustainable and equitable development.”

SERAP noted that almost three years after taking office, and promising to fight grand corruption, no ‘big fish’ suspected of corruption has yet been sent to jail.

It noted that the situation has not significantly improved, and it seems unlikely that many of those facing grand corruption charges will be successfully prosecuted stressing that Nigerians need to see real commitment and heavy investment in promoting a culture of clean government, and total obedience to the rule of law.

It argued: “Possessing the political will to fight corruption is not in itself enough if it’s not sufficiently demonstrated. Buhari should take the CPI to heart and initiate and actively facilitate the passing of tough anti-corruption laws, strengthening the capacity and independence of anti-corruption agencies, substantially improving the criminal justice system, obeying decisions and judgments of our courts, and ensuring the passing of the Whistle-blower Bill.

“Buhari can’t fight corruption successfully without significantly improving on the tools used by his predecessor, former President Goodluck Jonathan. The government should as a matter of urgency implement governance reforms to advance effective functioning of government institutions, strengthen the quality of democratic institutions and rule of law, and reducing corruption, if Nigeria is ever going to improve on its global anti-corruption ranking.

“Public officials still use political power to enrich themselves without considering the public good. Selective application of the law is a sign that the law is not being followed strictly enough, and that the fight against corruption is not maximally prosecuted.”

The organization remarked that “corruption is taking place every day and every hour, especially in the power sector, the education sector, the water sector, the health sector and other important public sectors in several states of the federation, and federal ministries.

“Corruption continues to directly affect the lives and well-being of millions of Nigerians across the country, and to erode public trust in public institutions and leaders, threatening the foundation of our democracy.

“There is uneven implementation of the rule of law and democratic processes, limited citizen participation in policy processes, and deliberate disobedience of court orders and judgments, such as the judgment of Justice Mohammed Idris of the Federal High Court obtained by SERAP, which ordered the government to publish widely how recovered stolen funds since the return of democracy in 1999 have been spent.

“The best measure of a country’s progress toward transparency and accountability is a total obedience to the rule of law.  The law ought to command the highest levels of respect by for example, the government immediately obeying orders and judgments of competent courts. The fight against corruption won’t succeed if the government continues to selectively adhere to law or refuse to rectify any disobedience. No country in which official position and orders claim a place in people’ s minds higher than the law can truly be said to fight corruption.

“Democracy works only if the people have faith in those who govern, and that faith is bound to be shattered when high officials and their appointees engage in activities which arouse suspicions of malfeasance and corruption”, it added.
