Fear in Igbo community, five kidnapped in two weeks in Calabar

There is fear within the Igbo community in Cross River State as not less than five Igbo businessmen have been abducted in the past two weeks in Calabar, the state capital.

It was gathered that one Ifeanyi and Lazarus, both spare parts dealers, were kidnapped two weeks ago, while an electrical parts’ dealer and contractor popularly known as ‘But Why’ was abducted on Monday.

The victims were said to have been kidnapped at their shops at Victor Akan Street, Calabar South, The Nation learnt.

Sources said they regained freedom after paying ransom running into millions of naira.

The latest kidnapping of a popular spare parts dealer, Mr Paulinus Obi, popularly known as Matata, and Emmanuel Ozokwu a contractor has sent a wave of panic across Igbo Community in Calabar.

Obi was kidnapped on Wednesday at Bedwell Street, while Ozokwu was whisked away on Thursday at Target Street ll in Calabar South.

An eyewitness said the Obi was kidnapped about 7:00pm on Wednesday, February 7, in front of his shop.

Narrating the incident, the eyewitness said: “We were sitting out in front of Matata shop about 7:00pm having a drink and two young men wearing black all through walked up to Matata and excused him.

“As soon as he stood up another stern looking masked man came out from a parked old blue Audi 80 with AK 47 riffled and jerked Matata up and threw him into the car. Immediately the Audi 80 drove off with the three other persons, another Camry car parked down Bedwell by White House Street followed them and they zoomed off to unknown destination.

“Since then they have not called, neither have they sent any message as to the next thing we can do. Honestly, this is one kidnap too many and the traders would not take this matter lying low any longer.”

Reacting to the development, the president of Igbo community, Calabar, Chief Albert Enya, described the incident as very unfortunate and called on security operatives to step up efforts to check the menace.

Decrying the incessant kidnap of Igbo business men, Enya cautioned Igbos to be very cautious and promised that they would collaborate with the security operatives to find a solution to the menace.

In May 2016, Igbo businessmen had shut their businesses for two day to protest incessant kidnappings of members of their community in the state.

  • Rickey Tarfa has case to answer – Court

Rickey Tarfa has case to answer – Court

SAN’s N500m claim against EFCC dismissed

A Lagos High Court in Igbosere on Friday dismissed the no case submission made by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Rickey Tarfa.

Justice Adedayo Akintoye ruled that the prosecution – Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) – had established essential elements of the offences it brought against Tarfa.

The judge noted that the justice of the case thus requires that the court should demand some explanation from the defendant in respect of the charge.

She ordered Tarfa to enter his defence on the next adjourned date, March 13, 2018.

Justice Akintoye also dismissed a claim filed by the Learned Silk seeking N520 million from the EFCC as damages for alleged malicious prosecution.

The judge described it as unmeritorious.

The EFCC arraigned Tarfa on March 10, 2016 on a 27-count charge which was subsequently amended to 26 counts.

He was accused of alleged willful obstruction of authorised EFCC officials, refusal to declare assets and giving false information to a public officer, by lying about his age.

The agency also alleged, among others, that the lawyer offered N5.3million gratification to Justice Nganjiwa in order to compromise the judge.

    Tarfa pleaded not guilty.

Last January 17, the Silk, through his counsel Abiodun Owonikoko SAN made a no-case submission asking the court to dismiss the charge because it was malicious.

He prayed the court to make an example of the anti-graft agency and “slam the hammer” on it with a N500m damages award.

“The specific ingredients were not proven. It is not as if the prosecution did not make an attempt, but that the attempt was so woeful,” Owonikoko submitted.

But EFCC counsel Mr Rotimi Oyedepo opposed Tarfa’s no-case submission, “because it amounts to contesting the obvious.”

According to Oyedepo, Tarfa misconstrued the no-case submission.

He said: “The prosecution is not expected to establish the guilt of the defendant, only to show that there is a prima facie case against the defendant.”

However, in her ruling yesterday, Justice Akintoye upheld the prosecution’s argument that a prima facie case had been made against the defendant.

The judge said: “What is expected of this court at this stage of no case submission is to look at the evidence adduced so far and determine whether a prima facie case has been disclosed against the defendant.

“At this stage also the prosecution is not required to have established its case beyond reasonable doubt against the defendant as the guilt of the defendant is not in issue at this stage.

“I have carefully evaluated the evidence so far, with the totality of evidence adduced before this honourable court, it is my opinion that the prosecution has established the essential elements of the alleged offences with which the defendant is charged.

Justice Akintoye also ruled that: “The evidence of the prosecution witnesses has not been discredited by the cross- examination of the defence counsel to the extent that no reasonable tribunal will simply convict based on it.

“I therefore hold that a prima facie case of failing and refusing to declare his assests, making false information to an officer of the EFCC, and offering gratification to a public official as stated in the amended information filed before this court has been made against the defendant.

“Therefore the defendant is called upon to enter his defence and the no case submission filed on his behalf is hereby dismissed.”

She added: “With regard to the defendant/applicant’s claim for exemplary damages for malicious prosecution against the EFCC, I find no merit in this claim of N520 million damages and same is refused.”

How unauthorized persons opened our Aircraft cargo hold – Air Peace

Air Peace alleged yesterday that suspected bandits opened the cargo hold of one of its aircraft while holding for departure on Runway 18 Right (A1) of the Murtala Muhammed Airport , Lagos.

According to the airline, the incident occurred about 7.35 pm on Thursday.

Its spokesman, Chris Iwarah said the crew observed the development and insisted on thorough security of the Abuja – bound flight after the incident.

Iwarah said the carrier’s crew acted in line with the high safety standards of the airline.

In a statement issued on Friday, Iwarah said: “We are sincerely grateful to all our wonderful guests on board Flight 7138 for their support, patience and cooperation throughout the precautionary security checks conducted by Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) squad, Federal Airport Authorities of Nigeria Aviation Security and our security team after suspected thieves opened the cargo hold of our aircraft holding for departure on Runway 18R (A1) of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos at about 7.35pm on Thursday, February 08, 2018.

“Pilot-in-Command, Capt. Adesola Arasi had to contact control tower when he was alerted by the light that came on in the cockpit suggesting that the cargo hold was opened for about 15 seconds and immediately shut.

“In line with our high security standards and the huge value we place on the lives of our guests and crew, Capt. Arasi insisted on having EOD squad check Flight APK 7138 before takeoff to be doubly sure nothing was deposited in the cargo hold by the suspected thieves to endanger the lives of our guests and crew.

“Our guests, who were fully briefed of the development by the pilot-in-command, were advised to disembark from the aircraft and board an Air Peace bus while the joint security operation by EOD, FAAN AVSEC and our security team lasted. The Lagos-Abuja flight was cleared by the security experts after exhaustive screening of the aircraft lasting about 30 minutes.

“The flight eventually took off at 9.30pm and safely landed in Abuja at about 10.23pm. Our satisfied guests commended the professionalism of Capt. Arasi and his team as well as the high safety standards of Air Peace.”

The airline, he assured, would continue to take all necessary measures to ensure the safety of its guests, crew and equipment.

  • MEN ONLY: 3 Natural Methods to EASILY Last Longer in Bed, Get Harder Er3ctions, and a Bigger Manhd Starting TONIGHT!

MEN ONLY: 3 Natural Methods to EASILY Last Longer in Bed, Get Harder Er3ctions, and a Bigger Manhd Starting TONIGHT!

…Simple natural techniques to EASILY last longer in bed, get harder erections, and a bigger penis!

Believe it or not, over 95% of cases of premature ejaculation can be traced to the brain.

    Let me explain…

During sex, as soon as there is a level of arousal, your brain quickly sends a message to your nerves, and before you know it…

    Bang! Bang! Bang… Whoosh!!

In other words, your brain associates arousal or sexual stimulation with pleasure and responds by ejaculation.

    It happens unconsciously.

But the good news is you can re-program your brain to last longer during sex.

Pardon my manners, my name is James, I am a sexual health researcher and expert with Larger Life Nigeria. With my knowledge and recommendation, a lot of Nigerian men both home and abroad have improved their sex life, saved their marriages.

    Let me introduce you to…

    One Simple Method

There is one mistake that most men make that affects their performance in bed…

During sex, they get carried away by the excitement, and find themselves holding their breaths or breathing rapidly.

But the truth is; when you cannot control your breath, you end up ejaculating too quickly.

What you should do instead is to program yourself to breath slowly, deeply, and purposefully.

    Here’s how to do it:

When you are having sex, inhale slowly and count up to 5.

Hold your breath for another count of 5 and then exhale slowly for another 5 counts.

And, whenever you feel your arousal rising too quickly, repeat this breathing pattern.

You see, when you master your breathing, it will quickly calm your sexual nerves and help you last a lot longer in bed.

It may seem like a lot of hard work, but it works.

But… There is a Better way

Before I let you into this brand new discovery, let me tell you that you are not alone in this problem and I feel your pain, I use to be in your shoes, kept buying every supplements in the pharmacies even on the internet yet no solution and I kept spending and spending my wife kept nagging now its all history.

A recent survey shows that over 30 million Nigerian men have this sex problems.

    1. Avoid Masturbation! Most men masturbate and it has become a habit for some of them. This is actually
one of the root cause of your quick ejaculation problem.

I’ve seen messages from men who are around 35 – 39years of age, but just last 1 – 5mins in bed…

All because they have condition their body to last for 5mins due to too much masturbation my advice is that you AVOID IT!

    2. Have an healthy diet and exercise

Most men that can’t go more than one round in bed, and have poor erection or little libido have something in common…”they have a POOR diet and do not really
    exercise”

What you can do now is to improve
    your health condition…

    (A) Eat more fruits and vegetables like

    – watermelon
    – grapes
    – pears
    – avocados
    – banana
    – green vegetables including carrots, vegetables

Include these fruits and veggies in your diet for the next 2 weeks

    (B) Avoid eating too much red meat and reduce intake of alcohol

    (C) Drink 1 cup of water when you wake up in the morning

    (D) Do 15minutes exercises often in the morning when you wake up … could be walking, jogging etc.

    3. Take Supplements that help boost your sexual activities.

The truth is most of our food don’t have the right combination to help us last longer.

So what you should do aside eating fruits and stopping masturbation is to taking natural supplements that helps you increase blood flow to the penis and boost your stamina.

I have one that has helped a lot of Nigerian men get their confidence and stamina back on track.

  • North East: UN targets $1.05bfor humanitarian response for 2018

North East: UN targets $1.05bfor humanitarian response for 2018

The United Nations (UN) is targeting over $1billion for 2018 humanitarian assistance in the North East of the country, it was revealed today.

About 7.7 million people from three most affected states in the North East are in dire need of humanitarian assistance this year. The states are Adamawa, Borno and Yobe.

Of this figure, UN is targeting 6.1 million for humanitarian assistance in 2018.

The global body realized $740million out of the $1bn appeal for humanitarian intervention in the North East of Nigeria in 2017.

The UN in collaboration with other international organizations and government has been actively providing humanitarian assistance in the area in the last nine years, owing to severe humanitarian conditions and insecurity occasion by activities of the Boko Haram insurgents.

UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Edward Kallon, who made the disclosure yesterday at the launch of the 2018 Humanitarian Response Plan for the North East in Abuja, however announced a target of $1.05bn for 2018.

He said the fund which is expected to come from about 60 donor organizations would be expended on 173 projects and would impact on the wellbeing of 6.1m people in the three most ravage states in the region; Borno, Adamawa and Yobe.

Speaking in Abuja at the Launch of the 2018 Humanitarian Response Plan, Mr. Edward Kallon, UN humanitarian coordinator in Nigeria said the humanitarian crisis in the North East is one of the most severe in the world.

In 2017, he noted that 5.6million people were reached by the global body, with a resultant effect in the number of food insecure people which dropped from 5.1million to 3.9million.

The global body in 2017 realized about $945 million out of the $1billion appealed sort for to address the humanitarian crisis in the region.

Despite the achievement, he however said that many challenges remain as conflict and population movements continue.

Hence, in 2018 he said the plan is to provide life-saving emergency assistance among other to the 7.7 million people in dire need of humanitarian assistance in the region.

He said, “The aim in 2018 is to build on humanitarian work carried out in previous years and we have three strategic objectives. The first is to provide life-saving emergency assistance to the most vulnerable people in conflict-affected areas, ensuring that assistance is timely and to- scale. The second is to ensure that all assistance promotes the protection, safety and dignity of affected people, and is provided equitably to women, girls, men and boys. The third is to help people kick-start their lives again and also reconstruct the foundations of their lives so that they are better prepared to face future crises. This includes the 1.3 million people who have returned home, but also includes, those who have decided to stay where they are and try and rebuild their lives.”

He further explained that “7.7 million People are in need of humanitarian assistance in the worst-affected states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe. These are people who have been displaced and are living in camps or host communities, people who have returned home to nothing, and people living in other areas that are hard to reach for humanitarians.

  • Police probe personnel’s attitudes to work

Police probe personnel’s attitudes to work

The Police Force Headquarters has launched an investigation into its personnel’s attitude to work.

The probe it was gathered was aimed at solving the problems of lazy, unprofessional and mischievous policemen in the system.

The Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 5, Mr. Rasheed Akintunde, who dropped the hint in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, yesterday, when he toured the state formation said there was no room for indolence in the police force.

He said measures had been put in place to address indolence and poor output among the officers and rank-and-file as part of the ongoing reforms in the system.

Addressing the personnel in the state’s police command, Akintunde urged them to be passionate in the jobs boasting that policing is the best profession in the world.

Akintunde, said that a study by the police headquarters indicated that only slightly above 20 per cent of the policemen in the country were active and working.

He said that the police introduced measures to ensure that the other 80 per cent complement the hardwork of the active personnel for effective policing in the country.

He said: “The funniest thing is that only 20 per cent of the police personnel are the ones working, the rest are just there.

“Talking about  20 per cent working; if you look at it well, every ‘big man’ wants his own security, they want 30 men to secure them instead of supporting the whole community by saying we should give resources for police to do the work so that the environment will be secured. They only want security for themselves.

“Even religious leaders want personal security. So after all that, we find that it’s only 20 per cent remaining to guard other places. Even for government’s commission too, they can load 20 units for it whereas they need only seven, so that’s why the 20 per cent comes in.

“That is why when  a DPO visits a station, he identifies those people and starts using them. You go to the Area Command, it is the same thing, the CP, it is the same.”

The AIG explained that effective community policing must be hinged on a three-pronged pillars of sound integrity, hard work and professionalism and  urged officers and men of the command to love their job.

He said: “You must satisfy three conditions to police well. First, you must have sound integrity, your integrity must not be in doubt. You must not bring those bad things into the job.

“The second thing is that you must be hardworking. Policing is not for the lazy persons. You must be ready at all times because you can be called upon at any hour of the day.

“The other part is that you must be professional. You must know what you are doing. Police job is very difficult for those people who don’t have integrity, who  are not hardworking and who are not professional but very simple for a man who have these principles.

“The job is the best; let us put in our best. We are not supposed to be seeing other agencies doing our work if we are doing it perfectly. Agreed, we lack some equipment we are supposed to use. What I am appealing to you is that let us wake up so that we can beat our chest as policemen and say l can do this and that.

“But where we are lazying  about; you see some of us running from pillar to post, looking for possible posting, looking for money that is not there.”

In his remarks,, the Bayelsa state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Don Awunah, thanked the AIG on his building visit but complained that the 4,000 police personnel in the state were inadequate to police Bayelsa due to its deltaic nature.

Awunah said that though there were some pockets of criminal activities in the state, statistics showed that Bayelsa remained the safest state in the  zone at the moment.

Awunah said despite the challenge of shortage of personnel, the command under his supervision introduced high visibility policing with human face.

He stated that the new system was adopted in collaboration with the Counter-Terrorism Unit, Tactical Strike Force, Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Serious Crimes Unit and the Peace and Conflict Resolution Unit.

The Commissioner highlighted some challenges facing the command to include manpower, logistics, working tools and accommodation.

His words, “They were going to church early in the morning when policemen stopped them at Igun junction on Third East Circular road and demanded for his vehicle papers; he told them that his papers were with the police because he rescued a girl that was hit by a car last week.

“The girl died on the way to Central hospital and they were referred to a police station to make his report and police collected his papers.

“But the policemen said they don’t care and that they will take him to the station. He fell inside his seat inside his car; suddenly the policeman met him and said do you not know what to do so you can go? He brought out N100 and begged the policeman so he can go but the policeman said he would not collect. So, he went back again and brought N1, 000 and said sir you take N500 and give me N500 this is the money they have; they are going to church. As he was begging the policeman, the policeman asked him to dress (shift away) and that was how the policeman pushed him and the truck smashed his head.”

He said the state Commissioner of Police, Babatunde Kokumo, visited the family and promised to carry out thorough investigation.

When the deceased fiancée was brought out to speak to journalists, she could not talk and only muttered, “Where is David?”
