Avoid giving birth at home, expert advises pregnant women

A public health physician, Dr Shehu Martins, on Monday advised pregnant women to avoid giving birth at home, saying it can lead to serious complications.

Martins, who works St. Mary’s Hospital, Gwagwalada, gave the advice in an interview with newsmen in Gwagwalada.

The physician said that though, every mother has the right to choose where she wants to be delivered of her baby, “it is important to consider the risks associated with home child birth’’.

According to him, the dangers associated with home delivery are much depending on the presentation as at the time the woman is deliver of her baby.

“If a woman has high blood pressure, diabetes, among other ailments, the risk could be more.

“For example, if a woman is hypertensive and she doesn’t know, there can be complication of convulsion and the person attending to her may not know how to handle the situation.

“In first time pregnancy, complication from obstructed labour to foetal distress cannot be monitored at home and when she continues pushing, it can lead to vaginal fistula.

“Vaginal fistula is when there is a leakage of urine from the bladder without the woman knowing due to poor management of child labour.

“This prolong labour can lead to death of the baby before she gets to the hospital,’’ he explained.

The physician, therefore, advised that every delivery should be monitored in the hospital, saying “a poorly assisted home birth can lead to serious complications’’.

He said that if a woman prefers to deliver at home, a skilled attendant or medical expert should be involved to handle any emergency situation.

Martins warned that a traditional birth attendant should not be allowed to handle real complications from child birth.

  • Sokoto PDP accuses APC of destabilising party

Sokoto PDP accuses APC of destabilising party

…as APC describes opposition ‘Mush room party’

With one year to the 2019 general polls, stakeholders of the Sokoto state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ) has raised alarm accusing the ruling All Progressives Congress ( APC ) in the state of hatching confusion to divide the party.

It vowed to reclaim the image of the state from the non performing APC government in both Sokoto state and federal level.

The opposition PDP also noted with concern the impending attempt by the state APC to factionalise its members and party’s activities.

At its committee meeting which held at the weekend according to a release by the state party Secretary, Kabiru Aliyu noted that the move by APC led administration was an attempt to destroy the PDP.

“Their plan will not work and it has failed. We are united under the leadership of Alhaji Ibrahim Milgoma.

“We are focused and determined to take over government.

“Our ‎strength of purpose remain intact and will not fail to challenge the ruling APC in the state.”

According to the release,” we are challenging the APC to redeem the numerous pledges it made to electorates instead of enticing our supporters with state resources to decamp to their fold.

“If APC had performed creditably well, people would have decamped on their own without been prompted.‎”

However, the meeting called on former governor Attahiru Bafarawa to contest the 2019 presidential election‎.

In a swift reaction to the issues raised by the PDP stakeholders, the ruling APC state chairman, Usman Suleiman Danmadamin Isa described as irrelevant, false and unfounded the allegations by the PDP.

“Our party has not recognised PDP nor its allegations as credible.

“PDP in Sokoto is a mush room party. A party that has no single councillor, what has it to show that will cause our party to lure it’s members.

“APC has the structures and strength to pull crowd. And those decamping to APC do that willingly without been given a dime.

“I am the chairman, APC Committee for decampees‎. I have never given nor anyone received money for joining our party”, he pointed out.

According to Danmadami” It is a common thing with an opposition which has not to offer to thrive in condemning the ruling party.‎”

He explained that between 2015 to date, APC led government of Aminu Waziri Tambuwal had performed creditably well in the execution of meaningful projects as well the repositioning of its educational sector and promotion of academic excellence through sponsorship and scholarship awards to students of Sokoto origin.

” We have invested a lot in the empowerment scheme for our youths, women and physically challenged.

“There is no invest that is as worthy as that in human capital which we have taken with seriousness to strengthen the capacity of all and sundry’, he stated.

  • FAAN begins evacuation of disused aircraft at Lagos Airport

FAAN begins evacuation of disused aircraft at Lagos Airport

…Set to install CCTV cameras at airside to forestall aircraft poaching

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria ( FAAN ) has commenced evacuation of abandoned aircraft at the airside of the Murtala Muhammed Airport ( MMA ), Lagos.

This is just as plans have also reached an advanced stage for the agency to install Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras at the strategic locations within the airside in order to forestall aircraft poaching and other incidences.

At least, 13 aircraft belonging to different airlines have been abandoned at the airside of the airport for several years with their owners reluctant to relocate them despite several warnings issued by the agency in the past.

Disclosing  this yesterday in an interview, FAAN, General Manager, Corporate Communications, Mrs. Henrietta Yakubu, said at least 13 aircraft have been abandoned at the airside by different airlines in the past years.

She gave the names of the aircraft relocated last Friday by the agency as Associated Air, IRS, Dana Air and Hak Air. Others that would be moved today are aircraft belonging to the liquidated carrier, Air Nigeria, Associated Cargo, Bellview, JedAir, Precision Aviation Handling Company and PAC, TopBrass and others. She lamented that FAAN had severally told the owners of these aircraft to relocate them away from where they are presently abandoned without any fruitful response from them, stressing that where they are presently abandoned constitute danger to safety and smooth operations of aircraft.

So far, she said four of the abandoned aircraft were relocated last Friday while additional four would be moved .

She said the relocation became necessary in order to give more space for airworthy aircraft to land, take off and manoeuvre as expected during operations at the airside, insisting that FAAN would continue to take safety and comfort of airport users as a top priority.

She said: “As at Friday, we moved four aircraft from the airside and the General Aviation Terminal (GAT) of Lagos airport told me again this morning (yesterday) that they are going to move another set of four aircraft. We have about 13 aircraft abandoned at the airside.

“We have taken the legal issues into consideration, if you agree with me; these aircraft are not helping us in anyway. They are taking up a lot of space. Space for aircraft landing and taking off are being taken by these aircraft.

“The airports belong to FAAN, which means that it is the property of the Federal Government and there is no airline that is bigger than Nigeria. Nigeria has given them a long time to be able to move their aircraft and they have refused to do this. FAAN is not taking possession of their aircraft, but we are moving them away from where they are to another place within the airport where they will not serve as eyesore and where they will not constitute nuisance to activities on our airside.

“What we are doing is part of the services FAAN is providing; comfort and security. So, for security, these aircraft have been abandoned at the airport for long and miscreants can just go in there and do whatever they want. We want our airports to look beautiful and fine, the aircraft that are littered around, it defaces the beauty of our airside.”

She also disclosed that very soon, FAAN would procure and install CCTV cameras at strategic places within the airside to further improve security at that part of the airport.

Apart from this, she explained FAAN had embarked on grass cutting at the airside to ensure improved safety and prevention of security within that area of airport.

“What we had in the past was that the ‘Follow Me’ vehicle used to be in the front of aircraft, but we have decided to reverse the order. The vehicles are now at the back of the aircraft to ensure that the aircraft go to parking bay without any incident or aircraft poaching,” she added.

  • Court frees seven accused persons in NURTW chief’s murder

Court frees seven accused persons in NURTW chief’s murder

An Ekiti State High Court on Monday discharged and acquitted all the seven persons accused of complicity in the murder of the former National Union of Road Transport Workers ( NURTW ) Chairman Omolafe Aderiye.

The judgment of the court in the case which lasted for over three years sparked emotions and wild jubilation by families, associates and supporters of the defendants who had massed outside the court premises.

Aderiye, an ally of Governor Ayo Fayose, was killed on 25th September, 2014 at his private motor park, Lafe Ade Transport Services, located in Ijigbo area of Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.

The accused persons who breathed the air of freedom are Adebayo Aderiye a.ka. Ojuigo, Adeniyi Adedipe a.ka. Apase, Sola Durodola, Kayode Ajayi, Oso Farotimi a.k.a. Oso Polo, Sola Adenijo a.ka. Solar and Rotimi Olanbiwonnu a.k.a. Mentilo.

The case commenced in November 2014 shortly after Fayose came to power and they had been in prison custody since then.

Trial judge, Justice Adekanye Lekan Ogunmoye, held that the prosecution failed to prove the complicity of the accused persons in the murder of Aderiye.

In arriving at the judgment, Ogunmoye held that the police failed to investigate the alibi of the accused which proved fatal to the case of the prosecution.

He ruled that the accused persons succeeded in convincing the court that they were not at the scene of the crime which the prosecution failed to rebut.

According to him, the prosecution failed to prove the count of conspiracy to kill the late Aderiye and the count of murder against all the seven defendants.

Ogunmoye held that the case of the prosecution was not helped by contradictory evidence led its witnesses which he said the court won’t believe.

For instance the judge faulted the evidence of PW 1, Wale Ibidapo, that one Adesokan Adedeji Israel emerged from a Golf car and shot sporadically into the air before firing the shot that killed the late transporter.

Ogunmoye held that “it is inconceivable that amidst sporadic gunshots, the witness would observe the purported killer(s) as what would be in the mind of the witness was how to escape from the scene hence the court won’t believe Ibidapo’s evidence.

Another witness whose evidence was discountenanced was PW3, Gbolahan Okeowo, who, according to the judge, gave “mutually contradictory” evidence.

The judge held: “Inconsistencies in the evidence of the prosecution witnesses has created a doubt. Where two or more witnesses give contradictory evidence, it will be illogical to believe their testimony.”

Ogunmoye held that in the charge of murder, the case must be proved beyond reasonable doubt which the prosecution has failed to do in the case at hand.

The judge ruled: “None of the alibi raised by the defedants was investigated by the police. The evidence of the prosecution failed to bring down the evidence of the defendants.

“The plea of evidence succeeds that the accused were not at the scene of the crime. The prosecution failed to rebut the evidence of the defendants.

“The prosecution has been unable to prove that the death of Chief Omolafe Aderiye was caused by any of the defendants.

“There was nowhere conspiracy can be inferred against any of the defendants. The first to seventh defendants are hereby discharged and acquitted.”

There was drama within and outside the premises of the State Judiciary Complex shortly after the court rose as some family members of the defendants rolled on the ground while others wept.

Armed policemen had a hectic time controlling the massive crowd of supporters outside the court who sang and carried some of the defendants shoulder-high.

The security was tight as the Fayose government had scheduled a rally same day to drum support for the candidature of Deputy Governor Kolapo Olusola at Fajuyi Park near the court premises.
