    FIFA receives Atletico complaint over Griezmann approach

    Football ruling body FIFA has confirmed receiving a complaint from Atletico Madrid who say Spanish league leaders FC Barcelona have illegally contacted their forward Antoine Griezmann.

    “We have received a complaint from Atletico Madrid about Griezmann’s case,’’ a FIFA spokesman told newsmen on Wednesday, without commenting further on the case.

    The 26-year-old Frenchman Griezmann renewed his contract at Atletico in summer until 2022.

    According to FIFA rules, he cannot be approached by interested clubs until the final six months of his contract.

    Spanish news reports said Atletico have proof that Griezmann has been contacted by Barca over a possible transfer.

    Reports also said that Atletico were not seeking compensation or requesting sanctions for FC Barcelona, ​​but wanted to bring the matter to the attention of the football ruling body.

    Griezmann, who came to Atletico in 2014, has been linked with several top clubs, including Manchester United.

    His release sum was halved to 100 million Euros (118 million dollars) on September 1.

    DSO will grow TV advertising market by $400m per annum – Lai Mohammed

    The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed said the Digital Switch Over (DSO) would grow the TV advertising market by 400 million dollars annually through audience measurement.

    The minister said this on Wednesday at the inauguration of the switch over from analogue to Digital Terrestrial Broadcasting in Ilorin to cover Kwara.

    The facilities for the switch over were provided by Integrated Television Services ( ITS ), the signal distributor for the Ilorin DSO.

    The minister said the DSO would also create a N100 billion per annum FreeTV distribution network for Nollywood.

    To achieve these, he said government would support the Nation’s Broadcasting Commission (NBC) in its efforts to create a viable currency by which producers of content and channels could be re-enumerated.

    Mohammed said with the middleware in the Set Top Boxes, homes would be able to buy and watch the latest Nollywood movies without the need for internet.

    “Imagine a film released on Monday morning being immediately available to all the households in Kwara at the touch of a button.

    “That’s the kind of experience we are talking about,’’ he said.

    The minister said the DSO would create tens of thousands of jobs through Technical and Manufacturing opportunities.

    “Set Top Box assembling and ultimately manufacturing is an irreversible mandate by the government to the industry.

    “We expect this to extend very quickly to local Smart TV and Tablet manufacturing,’’ he said.

    He noted that the Ilorin inauguration (DSO) had put the government back on track in digitisation efforts.

    “Let me assure you all that we will not wait for another year before our next rollout.

    “In fact, the next inauguration will be barely 48 hours from now, in Kaduna. We will then follow up rapidly to extend this digital television experience to all the six geo-political zones,’’ he said.

    He implored the ITS to rapidly extend the digital television experience beyond Ilorin and its environs, “so that the good people of Kwara can reap the digital benefits.’’

    The minister assured all stakeholders of President Muhammadu Buhari’s unwavering support for the growth and development of the industry.

    In his remarks, the state Governor Abdulfattah Ahmed said with DSO, the time had come to develop a television industry “that is uniquely Nigerian in content, orientation and style.’’

    The governor said the nation’s television must achieve the fame and spread attained by the fledgling movie industry, Nollywood renowned globally for its prolificacy, richness and entertainment value.

    The governor, represented by the state Commissioner for Information, Alhaji Babatunde Ajagbe, said the freedom DSO provided should not be used to spread falsehood and fake news.

    He specifically cautioned against the increasing dangers posed by uncensored political programmes in the state.

    Enugu revenue board seals 5 hotels over N6.6bn debt

    No fewer than five hotels in Enugu State have been sealed by the state Board of Internal Revenue ( BIR ) due to huge tax debts.

    The hotels are Nondon Hotel, Allen Suites, Villa Toscana, Filbon Hotel and Hotel Codial, which allegedly owed N6.6 billion to the state government.

    Officials of the BIR swooped on the premises of the affected hospitality outfits on Wednesday and shut down their operations.

    The Chairman of the board, Mr Emeka Odo said the affected hotels had been recalcitrant in fulfilling their tax obligations to the state government.

    He said the debts were owed between 2011 and 2016, adding that government was poised at recovering all debts owed it by institutions in the state.

    The chairman said the BIR would embark on intensive revenue drive from the first quarter of 2018, adding that tax evasion and avoidance would no longer be tolerated.

    Odo said the creativity of the state governor was enough to encourage residents and enterprises in the state to discharge their civic responsibilities.

    The chairman said accruals of the state government from the federal allocation would not be enough to deliver meaningful projects, adding that government relied mostly on IGR.

    According to him, the state will take the issue of debt recovery seriously in order to change the mindset of the people toward discharging their civic obligations.

    Meanwhile, the state governor, Chief Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi had disclosed that the government generated N17 billion between January and November, 2017.

    The governor made the disclosure at the recent launch of the automated tax system in the state.

    We didn’t approve LBIC’s demolition of structures – Anifowoshe

    The Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr Wasiu Anifowoshe, has denied giving approval to the Lagos State Building Investment Company ( LBIC ) Plc to demolish structures in some estates in the state.

    Anifowoshe spoke with newsmen on the sideline of the stakeholder’s meeting organised by the Lagos State House of Assembly Ad hoc Committee on Housing investigating petitions trailing illegal demolition of buildings in the state’s Low-Cost Housing Estates.

    He said the law empowers the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development to be the only agency to remove any illegal structure in the state.

    “My ministry approves all demolitions in the state. We have so many papers in our ministry to that effect.

    “All government parastatals in Lagos State come to the Ministry of Physical Planning for whatever demolition they want to do in the state. It is now meant for us to charge them or not.

    “The demolition (of structures in estates) in Amuwo Odofin, Ogba Ijaiye, Ipaja,  Isolo and others were not approved by the Ministry of Physical Planning.

    “They were not done by my ministry and I don’t know who did them,’’ Anifowoshe said.

    Meanwhile, there has been a running battle between the Assembly and the Managing Director of the LBIC, Mrs Folashade Folivi, over her attitude to the investigation.

    The Ad hoc Committeeher Chairman, Mr Olanrewaju Layode, had on Thursday accused Folivi of disrespecting the committee and warned the managing director that it might evoke its powers on her for failure to honour its meetings in the course of its investigation.

    Layode said the rescheduled meeting held on Tuesday, which Folivi eventually honoured, was cancelled because the managing director did not come with necessary documents to aid the committee’s work.

    He said the committee expected Folivi to attend the meeting with the Memorandum of Understanding of the company.

    “Mrs Folashade Folivi did not follow the MOU of the company with the demolition and contravened the law of her company.

    “She did what her company ought not to do and built structures on lands where she was not supposed to build, some of which were meant for recreation and social amenities in the estates.

    “That is why we want her to appear on the floor of the House to show that nobody is witch-hunting her,’’ the chairman said.

    Layode said having failed to honour the call of the committee during visits to the estates and failure to attend the meeting with the necessary documents, Folivi would have to appear before the entire House.

    “We are reporting back to the House and she might be lucky and the Speaker would ask us to re-invite her for questioning.

    “We just want her (Folivi) to know that she might not be competent for the office. We might go further to take actions when we see the MoU,’’ he said.

    Troops kill 20 insurgents, rescue 100 civilians

    The Nigerian Army on Wednesday said its troops had killed 20 Boko Haram insurgents in a clearance operation in the Lake Chad Basin.

    Col. Timothy Antigha, the Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 8 Division, made the disclosure in a statement in Maiduguri.

    Antigha said that the troops captured 17 insurgents, rescued 100 people, recovered vehicles and ammunition.

    He said the six soldiers that sustained injuries in the operation were referred to military medical facility for treatment.

    He said the operations were conducted in the past two weeks in Islands in Lake Chad region to crush Boko Haram insurgents inhabiting the islands.

    “In continuation of Operation DEEP PUNCH 2, designed to smoke out Boko Haram terrorists inhabiting remote Islands in Lake Chad basin lying within Nigerian territory, troops of 8 Division, Nigerian Army, on Operation LAFIYA DOLE, supported by soldiers of the Armed Forces Strike Group have inflicted heavy casualties on Boko Haram terrorists.

    “The operation which commenced about two weeks ago preceded by coordinated air and artillery bombardments of islands and localities occupied by terrorists.

    “The insurgents sneak into Magumeri, Kauram and other locations to loot property, attack security personnel and villagers.

    “Islands and villages cleared so far include: Arena Chiki, Chikun Gudu, Arena Waje, Sa’ada and Juwe.”

    Antigha disclosed that the rescued civilians included 100 elderly men, women and children, adding that preliminary investigation revealed that most of the rescued persons were held hostage and forced to work in the farms.

    The army spokesman listed the ammunition recovered to include one Mercedes Benz Truck; two gun trucks, two pick up vans, one Anti – Aircraft machine gun, five AK-47 riffles, three Fabrique Nationals (FN) Riffles, two G3 Riffles and one Pump Action Riffle.

    Others are: one Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) tube, two bombs, two Very High Frequency (VHF) Radios and one Night Vision Goggle.

    The troops also recovered 55 rounds of 5.56 X 45 mm ammunition, 5 Bangalore Torpedo, Two 120mm Mortar Bombs, and 1000 rounds of 7.62 mm Ball Metal Link ammunition.

    Other ammunition included 55 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition, 108 rounds of 12.7mm ammunition, two memory cards, two hydraulic jacks and a 1.5 amph battery.

    Reggae musician, Majek Fashek has called out controversial On Air Personality (OAP), Ifedayo Olarinde a.k.a Daddy Freeze for his strong disapproval of his recent performance at a church concert in Abuja.

    Majek the ‘Rainmaker’, who before now had not performed at faith based events, did on Sunday December 17, at the Common wealth Of Zion Assembly ( COZA ) Christmas Carol in Guzape, Abuja.

    Freeze, who also recently condemned the practice of ‘Tithing’ in churches said it made no sense for a secular artiste like Majek to perform in such gathering as Christian altars are supposed to be sacred.

    However, Majek Fashek’s manager, Uzoma Omenka, in a video on Instagram, rebuked Freeze saying that nothing was wrong with a secular artiste performing in church.

    “There is nothing wrong with a world class legend Majek Fashek whose music sends the right message to be invited to perform in any church.

    “To Daddy Freeze, you need to do your research properly before wagging your mouth and speaking like a Kid,” he said.

    Police arrest suspected killers of oil firm manager in Rivers

    The police have arrested seven suspects who allegedly kidnapped and murdered a 64-year-old man, Mr Ubani Onyema, after collecting N10 million ransom.

    Team Commander, Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team ( IRT ), Abba Kyari, confirmed the arrest  on Wednesday in Lagos.

    Kyari, an Assistant Commissioner of Police, said the victim, a production manager in Niger Delta Petroleum Resources Ltd., was kidnapped by gunmen in Woji area of Port Harcourt on October 16.

    He said that a ransom call was made to the hostage’s company demanding N100 million.

    “Eventually, the ransom was negotiated down to N10 million, which was paid to the kidnappers despite not getting a proof of life.

    “IRT operatives deployed to Port Harcourt by IGP Ibrahim Idris swung into action as the hostage was not released after the ransom was paid as negotiated and agreed.

    “Unrelenting follow up by the IRT eventually led to the arrest of seven of the kidnappers. Suspects confessed to various roles each played in the kidnap.

    “They admitted that the victim died on the very day of his kidnap as a result of gunshot wounds he sustained during the incident.

    “They still went ahead to collect a ransom of N10 million,” Kyari said.

    He said that the arrested suspects, including the gang leader, allegedly confessed to the crime.

    According to him, the gang leader organised the kidnap and recruited the hostage keepers who brought the two cars used while his deputy purchased the pre-registered SIM used in negotiating and picking up the ransom.

    Among the kidnap masterminds were three men who worked in the same company with the victim and a cultist who provided the arms.

    “Items recovered from the gang include one AK-47 rifle and two vehicles used in the kidnap.

    “Effort is ongoing to arrest other fleeing gang members, recover arms and the body of the victim which they confessed to have dumped into a river,” Kyari said.

    Mexican reporter shot dead at Christmas party

    A Mexican reporter was shot dead Tuesday at his son’s school Christmas party, authorities confirmed, bringing the total number of journalists killed in the country in 2017 to 12.

    Unknown assailants burst into the school in the state of Veracruz and shot Gumaro Aguilando in front of children and parents.

    The state is known as one of the most dangerous for journalists, with several killed.

    Veracruz governor Miguel Yunes said he was saddened by the “devious and cowardly attack” and had ordered extra protection for the journalist’s family.

    The 35-year-old had apparently been threatened before and requested protection from the government’s protection programme, according to Alicia Bremont, the head of the Association of Independent Journalists in Acayucan.

    The killing makes Mexico the most deadly country in the world for journalists, alongside Syria, according to figures published by media organisation Reporters Without Borders on Monday.

    In its annual report on violence against journalists it said 12 had been killed in Mexico  this year.

    Home to several powerful drug cartels, journalists in Mexico who cover topics linked to organised crime or political corruption quickly become targets.

    FRSC deploys 500 personnel, 18 vehicles in Enugu

    The Federal Road Safety Corps ( FRSC ) has deployed over 500 personnel to man all critical road corridors in Enugu State for its special Yuletide patrol.

    The critical road corridors include: Enugu-Onitsha Road; Enugu-Port Harcourt Road; Enugu-Onitsha Old Road; Enugu-Nsukka Road and Enugu-Abakaliki Road.

    The Sector Commander of FRSC in the state, Mr Edward Zamber, said in Enugu on Wednesday that the command had also deployed 18 vehicles for logistics.

    Zamber also said that the command had deployed over 15 motorcycles within the five unit commands under the command.

    He said that among the 18 vehicles were two specially equipped medical ambulances for quick response to accidents on the critical road corridors.

    He said the command had been given a 700-tonne tow truck that could remove any type of heavy duty vehicle that broke down on any road in the state.

    “We are deploying over 500 personnel, excluding special marshals that would be working with us from time to time.

    “We have streamlined our operation to the critical road corridors, road bends and curves as well as identified accident prone spots in the state.

    “The command for now is running a 24-hour road surveillance shift each day to ensure we stay on the road always.

    “The command is also working in collaboration with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the police and military in the state to  ensure safety and security of lives and property of our people,’’ the sector commander said.

    “We in the command are wishing Nigerians a safe ride to their destination as well as reminding them that safety on the road is everybody’s responsibility,’’ he added.
