  • Churches in Nigeria losing focus, says Bishop Wale Oke

Bishop Wale Oke, the National Deputy President, Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), says churches in Nigeria are deviating from the cause of soul winning.

Oke made the observation on Tuesday in Ibadan while hosting the leadership of Foursquare Gospel Church, Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Oke is also the Presiding Bishop of Sword of the Spirit Ministries, Ibadan.

NAN also reports that the delegation of Foursquare church led by the outgoing General Overseer, Rev. Felix Meduoye, had visited Oke to introduce the new General Overseer-elect, Rev. Sam Aboyeji.

According to the renowned cleric, the focus of most churches recently and those behind them is the pursuit of mundane issues that are not preparing people, especially Christians, for eternity.

He expressed regrets that churches were fast losing focus by drifting from their primary charge of assignment, which he said, was to enlist people into the kingdom of God.

“My concern is the church is drifting. We have left our primary assignment of soul-winning to the pursuits of other lesser things.

”Yes, money is good, but everything should not be made to centre around prosperity, ” he said.

The cleric called on pastors to reorder their priorities by making God’s charge their main focus and genuinely win souls so as to change ”the sagging world.”

Oke, who thanked the leadership of the Foursquare Church for counting him worthy to be visited, commended Meduoye for his sterling leadership qualities that made the church cisis-free.

He urged Aboyeji, the incoming General Overseer of the church to be humble and emulate his predecessors.

Earlier, Meduoye informed Oke that the process that produced Aboyeji was transparent, saying this aided the seamless and rancour-free transition in the church.

“Our transition in the church is a four-stage process. There is no inconsistency; the process was very transparent and seamless. In fact, Nigerian government needs to learn from us how election should be conducted,” Meduoye said.

Aboyeji in his brief remarks assured that he would not deviate from the right path laid by his predecessors in further taking the church to greater heights.

  • Residents protest menace of land grabbers in Ogun

Residents of over a dozen communities at Magboro in Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State, in their hundreds stormed the Ogun State House of Assembly complex Tuesday, appealing to the state legislators and Governor Dapo Abiodun to help them retrieve their properties from land grabbers.

The protesting landlords lamented that the Ogun State Anti -Land grabbing laws have been of no effect in curbing the menace of land grabbers or protect victims of land grabbers of incessant attacks.

The distraught landlords and landladies said they purchased the land upon which they built their homes and having lived there for the past 20 years, were surprised to see suspected land grabbers invade the area last week when many of them had gone to work, sealed some homes with “court possession notices” and outrightly “locked others with padlocks and chains.”

The spokesman of the residents, Mr Jimi Olusanya, who narrated their ordeals to the Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Hon. Kunle Oluomo, said the suspected land grabbers allegedly engaged thugs and some police officers from the Ibafo Divisional Police Headquarters to harass and intimidate them, injuring many in the process.

He appealed to the Ogun Assembly and the Governor on behalf of members of 15 Community Development Associations in Magboro, to intervene and help them recover their properties by invoking the anti – land grabbing laws of Ogun State against the irritant land grabbers.

Also, while Magboro residents were yet to leave the Ogun Assembly complex, residents of Ikogbo in Ado Odo Ota Local Government stormed the venue, lamenting attacks and harassment by land grabbers and displayed pictures of wounded victims and structures demolished by the attackers.

The Ikogbo residents led by the duo of Ade Animashaun and Akindele Abiodun, appealed  to the state lawmakers to save them from the land grabbers.

But responding, Speaker Kunle Oluomo, assured the affected house owners that the Ogun Assembly he leads, “will do the needful” to address their problems.

Oluomo, however, added that the legislators only make laws but neither interpret nor execute it when flouted.

  • FBI burst: FG to repatriate funds stolen by fraudsters, says NFIU boss

The Federal Government has begun the process of repatriating funds allegedly stolen by Nigerian fraudsters from individuals and corporate organisations in the United States of America and other parts of Europe.

The Director General of the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU), Tukur Modibbo dropped the hint in Abuja on Tuesday.

Modibbo said the exercise has begun with the repatriation of the monies stolen and transferred into the country by 80 Nigerian fraudsters recently busted by the American Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

The NFIU boss, who spoke at a workshop on Sub-Regional Conference on Illicit Financial Flow and Assets Recovery, further hinted that some Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) were being used for illicit financial transactions.

The two-day workshop was organised by the Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA), in collaboration with other stakeholders.

According to him, findings by the NFIU had revealed that some of the illicit funds have been going into terrorism financing and other organised economic crimes.

“We are reversing the transactions of the monies of those Nigerians indicted for cybercrimes in the United States”, Modibbo said, even as he called on western countries to also return monies belonging to Nigeria but which were illegally taken to their countries.

Continuing, he said, “The same thing is happening in Malaysia. We are reversing such transactions. We need more collaboration to ensure that there is a clean system in our region and the world.

“Nigerians abroad have to be discipline because we know that most of them are hard working. You can’t run to another country and start attacking your brothers.

“So, we are working with the NIA, the Police, Immigration and other security agencies to ensure that we end such transactions.

These fraudsters should know that the world is no longer what it used to be on illicit financial transactions.

Stating the international dimensions of illicit financial flows and their links to terrorism, Modibbo linked the Boko Haram insurgency and killings in many parts of the country to foreign terrorism influences.

Said he, “What is happening in the North East is not a Nigerian problem alone but an international issue. The killings happening even in Zamfara are also not only a Nigerian issue and they kept happening because of the illicit financial inflow people used to fund terrorism and banditry.

“So, what is happening in the North East and the Northwestern state of Zamfara is an international crime. As a result of illicit financial inflow, foreigners come to the country and kill Nigerians.

“It’s not that Nigerians are killing one another; foreigners are involved and they get funding from some of these Civil Society Organisations (CSOs)”.

“We are going to look at foreign companies doing criminal business here in Nigeria. We are also looking at Chinese, Indian and other companies doing illegal mining in the country.

“Some of these companies have been taking advantage of our environment but we will bring them to justice just the same way we are trying to bring to justice those Nigerians doing criminal things abroad”.

Modibbo said that NFIU will need a list of legitimate civil society organisations operating in the country in order to embark on crackdown on identified illegitimate and close down their accounts.

Stating that there are about 52, 000 NGOs operating in the country, Modibbo said the NFIU was already collaborating with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) to identify culprit NGOs and other rogue organisations with the view to deregistering them.

Giving a keynote address at the event, the Special Adviser to the President on Economic Matters in the office of the Vice President, Dr Adeyemi Dipeolu, said illicit financial flow in Africa has been on the increase.

Dipeolu urged political will on the part of the leadership to address the problem, adding that there must be transparency in curbing the menace.

He said, “With transparency, illicit financial inflow will stop. People must insist on transparent management of resources and legal financial flow,” he said.

The event was attended by delegates from other English speaking West African countries of Ghana, Gambia Senegal, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

  • I’m ready for Bayelsa APC primaries, says Lyon

A businessman and oil magnate, Chief David Lyon, on Tuesday said he was prepared and ready for the primaries of the All Progressives Congress (APC) scheduled in Bayelsa State on September 29.

Lyon, whose surprise entrance into the governorship race changed the political calculations in the state, said he was optimistic of winning the APC ticket in a free and fair contest.

The governorship aspirant in a statement by his Media Adviser, Chief Gift Ebiki, said the claims by people that he was forced against his will to join the gubernatorial race were mischievous and unfounded.

He said: “My team is 100 per cent ready to face the primary. We are expecting a direct primary, and we’re optimistic that we will win without problems.

“I have been in politics for long. I have also contested elections in the past. I am as a politician as I am a businessman.

“But somehow, I became a bigger businessman because of hard work, God’s blessings and my managerial skills.

“I also spend a lot of my time building my political relationships. So, I didn’t just enter politics today. Have you forgotten I contest the House of Assembly election with the former Speaker Kombowei but later stepped down for him to complete his second term in office?

“If I don’t have political ambitions, why did I join politics and remain there till now?

‘’I love Bayelsa State and most of my business investments are domiciled in the state. I believe I have everything it takes to address the problems of underdevelopment and poverty in our state”.

Addressing allegations of lack of capacity against him, Lyon wondered how he could have risen to be a major player in the oil and gas sector if he had no capacity and educational qualifications.

He said his business required him to travel across the world, hold meetings with major oil and gas industry players and representatives of oil-producing countries.

“The oil politics is the biggest politics in the world and I have excelled in that industry. My business requires me to speak with people in OPEC and to relate with petroleum ministers across the world.

“So, what kind of capacity are they talking about? Besides, I have the best brains in my political team. No single man runs a democratic government.

‘’You need commissioners and advisers and listening ear to be a good administrator,” he said.

Reacting to insinuations that he lacked the ability to speak in public, Lyon, who is backed by Sylva said: “Am I not the one talking to you? I may not have oratorical skills like other public speakers, but you can see l can talk and I have been talking.

“And my talk and speeches will be enough to bring the development we are looking for. I am also a believer in action and less talk.

“In my private business, I have demonstrated the willingness to solve the problems in our state especially the problem of unemployment.

“I have over 7,500 employed in David Lyons companies for the past six years. I am a major contributor to peace in the state. Besides, I have been running a scholarship foundation that cuts across all the local government areas in the state”, he said.

Describing former Governor Sylva as the pillar of the APC in Bayelsa, Lyon said it was a privilege to get Sylva’s endorsement of his ambition.

“Former Governor Chief Timipre, who is now a minister, is our boss. So, his support is tremendous to us. He’s our leader, and we will not betray him because he means well for the state,” he said.

  • Boko Haram: Security expert writes Defence Minister on strategy to end terror in Nigeria

Renowned Security expert, Comrade Richards Murphy, has written the Minister of Defence,  proffering solution to the nagging security challenges bedevilling Nigeria.

The letter addressed to the Defence Minister, Gen. Bashir Salihi Magashi (rtd) and obtained by our reporter on Sunday,

While describing  the appointment of Magashi as a rounded peg in a rounded hole, Murphy urged him to synegise with the Chief of Army Staff, Major Gen TY Bruatai, in spirit, determination, courage and commitment to timely  end senseless killings in Nigeria.

He also urged to  prioritize and untie the political knots which strangulate  financial operations in the Northeast and elsewhere soldiers are involved on special  Internal Security (IS) assignment.

    The letter reads below.

    The Honourable Minister Sir,

“What Your Predecessor Failed To Hint The C-in-C”: An Open Letter

My Honourable Minister, please I pledge your indulgence to permit me to warmly congratulate you on this new appointment as Nigeria’s Political Chief of the Defence Ministry.

Sir, from my years of experience on security matters, I believe, His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari has made a proven and trusted choice in your appointment to lead a ministry. I consider  it very sensitive to national interest that you are  extremely burdened by  the subsisting circumstances of the prevailing insecurity challenges assailing our cherished country to come to the rescue.

However, in spite of the enormity of the mandate of your present office, there is no modicum of reservation in me that stars shine everywhere. And I can vouch for your competence  and experience as a performer whose vast knowledge has resolved  the most complex of mysteries in the past,  throughout your meritorious military career, until a blissful retirement.

The Hon. Minister, Sir, it’s unnecessary to remind you about the magnitude of the insurgencies and insurrections, Nigeria is facing at the moment. I know, it’s a knowledge  on your fingertips. But let me bore you a little that from the mindset of Mr. President from the outset, he wants to deal the final lethal blow on Boko Haram terrorism and farmers/ herders crises in the country.

And Mr. President knows these  twine insecurity threats to our beloved country, Nigeria would have been eclipsed long ago, assuming political leaders at the lower rung of power imbibed his disposition, absolute cooperation and hard work to collectively terminate these evil plots against our country.

Your appointment as Defence Minister therefore, stems from  Mr. President’s conviction that at this time of our political nay security challenges odd history, none can do the job better than you. We are honoured by this presidential trust in you!

And from my observation afar, your first few weeks of official outing, tells me lucidly that you do not only have proper grasp of the briefs of the mandate, but your first few official steps in this direction by visiting Nigerian troops in the frontline/ trenches  of counter-insurgency in the Northeast have gladdened the hearts of many Nigerians.

I dare say, it is indisputably, your  rare  courageous expression of the courage and  determination, Nigerians never saw in your predecessors. Everyone now knows, a new Sherrif is in town and the #NextLevel is consolingly impressive.

I want to encourage you, Sir,  to continue with this spirit to blend the previously seeming gulf between the political and the Military leadership in the last phase of routing out Boko Haram terrorism from  the shores of Nigeria.

And may I quickly remind you that with another competent solder, someone,  I admire so much, like the COAS and Leader of the counter-insurgency operations, Lt. Gen. TY Buratai, with same proclivity with you, I foresee the final end to these endemic crises. This synergy is what Nigeria needs now to terminate the most troubling crises to the federation.

Both of you have shown me a remarkable and credible departure  from  the “big men” or leaders we know, who despite the urgency of work at hand, sit back in  their Abuja’s cosy offices to dread gunfire in the fields, but relish the paraphernalia of office. Such posture was far detached from subordinate leaders on counter-insurgency, untill there is a presidential order to relocate  to the theatre of war with insurgents. Sir, this is the right path that you have chosen!

Gen. Buratai particularly is a leader,  I have sensed is personally committed to ending terrorism and weird insurrections in our country. I have never seen a COAS who dares all odds to wear  his war  boots and jumps into the trenches with troops to battle insurgents. He does it in rare areas of troops heated battles with insurgents like Gwoza or Bama,  and so on.

Let me remind you that Nigerians passionately  appreciate  the immense contributions of the Nigerian Military particularly the excellent job which Mr. President has been devoting time, energy and national resources to do for the liberation of our  country from insecurity threats. No Nigerian democratic  political leader has come this far in tackling our security challenges or securing our lives  than Buhari.

Again, Sir, with you pairing with another crack soldier, like  Gen. Buratai in spirit, determination, courage and commitment to timely  end senseless killings in Nigeria, you must  prioritize and untie the political knots which strangulate  financial operations in the Northeast and elsewhere soldiers are involved on special  Internal Security (IS) assignments. Indeed, I appeal to you that  whenever budgeted funds for defence and security ought to function, there should be no delay.

We know security of lives and property of a nation needs urgent attention like a pragnant woman trapped at home by labour pains in the middle of the night. As political head of Nigeria’s Defence architecture, please, ensure defence budgets  are insulated from bereaucratic bottlenecks and released to appropriate security authorities  instantaneously to  serve the purpose for which tax payers monies are approved by the National Parliament.

Sir, may I plead again that you must be in constant and consistent contact with your Finance counterpart  Minister  to see that budgeted security releases are made as early as possible to carter for troops’ welfare, particularly in the frontline and also, other expenses on security emergencies. I do know you understand  that where national security is involved, all bereaucratic hurdles are dismantled instantly. Please be constantly alert Sir!

Furthermore, I am encouraged  to advise you on what others reading this open epistle may consider extraneous, but I feel, it’s necessary. It escapes or rather beclouds most occupants of your office.

I hinted earlier about the unnecessary persistence of the bad omen on insecurity. It is Boko Haram crisis in Nigeria and the ferocious insurrections crippling development in our country under the Buhari Presidency. It’s because of the political and personalised interests of some evil Nigerians who sponsor as well as profit from the instigated violence and killings.

I suspect top politicians, some of whom have lost out so terribly in popular, electoral contest against the candidature of President Buhari or irreconciliably against his Presidency are the masked brains behind these violence and killings to discredit his Government.

Please, Sir, it is now your official responsibility, as political ombudsman of Nigeria’s Defence Ministry  to scout for  these personalities and define  political solutions or  strategies to ensure, the Nation’s  security agencies are not involved in unnecessary bickering with political actors whose major aim is targeted  at either Mr. President or Security Chiefs.

Its not too good that Nigeria, a country facing very dire insecurity threats  would have it’s heads of security agencies at the topmost echelon bickering in public glare over a misunderstanding. It should not be allowed to degenerate to  the extent they have not only become the laughing stock of themselves, but the whole world. I don’t find this comfortable and you must put an end to it, Sir!

Also, whilst approaching this delicate issue, you must also clandestinely identify cheap or  mighty  actors, with selfish political goals in their local  domains. They should not be blessed to be  larger than the federation of Nigeria, which we have all consented, right from our forefathers to geographically co-exist in peace and harmony.

Hon. Minister, Sir,  I plead with you to also extend same to other Nigerian leaders that this is the only right time to hold Nigeria and Nigerians together as one indivisible entity for present generation and posterity.

Read Also: Senator condemns murder of raped woman

I have to remind you of this missing fraternal gap and plead for your intervention because elder statesmen like Gen. TY Danjuma and others, who are  angry with Mr. President on a personal political relationship at one end, show us  ethnic bigotry at another end in vain attempts to demonize the Nigerian Army. And it is done in  the manner Gen. Danjuma brazenly did earlier in the year when he passed unstatesmanly remarks at the first convocation of the Taraba State University, Jalingo, indicting the Army.

Sir, it’s your responsibility to now oversee to a conclusive harmony of Nigeria on security matters. So, working on a day to day synergy  with military and political actors on the turf is imperative between you and your compatriots who are still in uniform or retired.

I  believe, your personalistic   humility in reaching out to these these actors, devoid of pride and in your usual nationalistic passion would really  teach them the virtues of sacrifices for the nation,  as against egoistic  self-serving motives.

Sir, lastly, it’s now on your table to look at the herders/farmers’ crisis from a more strategic and all- inclusive strategy for Nigeria to overcome it. Please, do not allow   desperate sabs or same  underground or veiled forces to taint  Mr. President’s image with such crisis. I know, you have the remedy to these conflicts.

Sir, i  wish you  the very best in your newest national assignment. Please, extend my warm regards and  gratitude to the troops on the battlefield.  Please, Sir, tell our gallant troops,  Nigerians are  with them in soul and spirit.

Dingyadi disclosed this on Monday in Abuja at the opening of the Nigeria INTERPOL week.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the INTERPOL is the world’s largest police organisation with 194 member countries.

  • How I used to supply AK-47 rifles to Wadume, by arms dealer

A SELF-CONFESSED arms dealer has owned up as supplier of weapons to Hamisu Wadume, the man whose recent arrest  led to the killing of three police officers by soldiers in Taraba State.

The police described Wadume as a multi-millionaire who made his money through kidnapping.

He is currently on the run after soldiers freed him from his police captors.

However, one Ojomo Gbenga Adebowale, who is currently in the custody of the police has claimed that he used to supply Wadume with AK 47 rifles and ammunition.

The 35 year old suspect told interrogators that the business relationship between him and Wadume started with the   supply of six AK-47 and 3000 rounds of ammunition to him.

But Adebowale said he never knew that Wadume was into kidnapping as it is not his business to ask what his customers do with the arms he sells to them.

He was arrested by the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) of the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

Adebowale described himself as a gun runner.

“I am into firearms dealership,” he said.

Narrating how his business relationship with Wadume evolved, he said:

“I got to know him through one Moses. You know the firearm business involves a lot of people; it is not a one-man business; it’s a cartel and we have bases and we are based in different places like Lagos, Ibadan and Onitsha.

“So, I got to know Hamisu through one Moses from Onitsha. This Moses is a friend to one Dooshima and Delili, who happen to be Tiv guys from Benue State.

“Hamisu is a friend to Doshima and Delili and they usually come from Makurdi, to see Moses who is my partner in firearms business; that was how I met him.

“There was a time I traveled to do supply in Onitsha; that was the first time I met them and that was about four years ago.

“They came together to Onitsha. He wasn’t my customer, so I didn’t have much dealings with him; I only chatted with him because my business is a mafia kind of business; so I’m careful with the kind of people I deal with.

“Besides, I didn’t want my partner to think that I wanted to snatch his customers from him, so I decided to stay away from them.

“I think the last time I went to make supply, I went to Makurdi, that was six months after we met in Onitsha; we were all together in Makurdi; that was where I got to know that Hamisu is actually from Taraba State, because all along I was thinking he was from Benue State because of his friends.

“That was four years ago when I went to supply Doshima and Delili their consignments.

“Later, I don’t know if he got my number from them; but early this year, I think around January, because I travelled out of the country. I had a problem and travelled and came back that was when they now broke the news of the death of Delili.

“He told me that Delili was dead and that he got my number through Delili because when he called me early this year, he was calling with a hidden number.

“It was when I picked the phone that he said Delili was dead. I was shocked and he said that the Hamisu whom I was not really friendly with was in dire need of AK-47 rifles.

“I think he asked for 10 AK-47 rifles, and I didn’t have that number at the time in my possession. “But since he said he was in desperate need of them, I told him I had only six and four cans because he requested for 10.

“The ammunition is called can. The box of the ammunition is called can. So I said I could only provide six AK-47s and four cans. That was late January this year.”

Continuing, Adebowale said: “since he was in desperate need of the weapons, each AK-47 was supposed to be N650,000, but I sold them to him for N800,000. The ammunition I gave to him was at the rate of N350,000.”

Asked whether he supplied more weapons thereafter, he answered in the negative.

His words: “No, I did not. Later, the Abba Kyari boys tracked me and I was arrested and since then I have not come in contact with him again.”

On how he took the weapons to Hamisu he said: “I brought them from Burkina Faso and I usually transport them to my clients by concealing them properly in whatever vehicle I take to do the delivery.

“We have a vehicle and there is a compartment we built neatly in the vehicle where we conceal these weapons that cannot be detected by security personnel on the road.

“I usually bring the weapons from Burkina Faso and Ghana.

“I took the weapons personally to Makurdi to supply to Hamisu. We supply anywhere. But he comes from Taraba to Benue so I supplied to him in Makurdi. I travelled to Makurdi and Moses too and most times Makurdi is our meeting point. We use either Onitsha or Makurdi as our supply base, but most times it is Makurdi.”

Asked to describe Hamisu Wadume he said, “Well, I never knew he was into kidnapping and I mustn’t know because we are dealers and we deal with different people.

“We deal with members of the community; we deal with farmers and people who are into security. We do so because sometimes the prohibited ones are just out of it. We deal with only civilian guns.”

He said he does not ask his customers what they do with the weapons he supplies them “because that is the business I do for a living, so we don’t usually ask those questions.”

On how felt when he heard that Wadume was arrested and later freed by soldiers while the IRT guys were killed, he said: “Honestly I felt so, so bad about the whole incident. I felt so bad because I never knew he was into kidnapping of that magnitude.”

He said he has not had any form of communication with Wadume since the January encounter.

“No. We have not really spoken because then my mind was not really settled because I overheard that the IRT guys were tracking me so I was very careful about what I did and where I went to,” he said.

“I was running helter-skelter. So, it was only those six AK-47 rifles that he got from me although he has been dealing with Moses and others.”

He warned young men contemplating going into crime to desist because “it is not good at all.” He added: “Truly I never knew I would end up like this. I feel so remorseful about everything that I have done with my life.”
