  • Has General Buratai kept the promise?

A lot has been said about the exploits of the Nigerian Army in the fight against terrorism in Nigeria. While some have questioned its operational effectiveness, some have also praised it to high heavens. In my opinion, those that have had reasons to question the operational efficiency of the Nigerian Army did so on reasons best known to them. Also, those that have praised the operational effectiveness of the Nigerian Army did so based on what it is they have seen by making a comparison with what it was in times past and what it is now.

I belong to that school of thought that is full of praises for the Nigerian Army not just in the fight against terrorism in North-East Nigeria, but for how it has been able to handle its military operations simultaneously across the country. In the North and the East, South, and West, the presence of the Nigerian Army is felt.

This brings to the issue of leadership and the critical role it has played in the fight against terrorism and other militant groups in Nigeria. According to one of the celebrated war strategist of all time and author of the book ‘Art of War’ Sun Tzu, “the general who advances without coveting fame and retreats without fearing disgrace, whose only thought is to protect his country and do good service for his sovereign, is the jewel of the kingdom.”

This is one attribute of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai that I have in numerous forays tried to bring to the front burner for Nigerians to indeed understand and appreciate the sacrifices that have gone into winning the war against terrorism and other militant groups in Nigeria. He is indeed the jewel of the kingdom because if the territorial integrity of Nigeria is questioned, then there would be no country.

For me, no matter what anyone thinks, there has been a substantial difference in the fight against terrorism in Nigeria since 2015. This much was corroborated in many quarters and also coupled with the fact that no Nigerian territory is under the control of Boko Haram terrorist anymore. How was this possible you might want to ask? It’s simply leadership. We must admit the role of sound leadership in all human endeavours. And the operations of the Nigerian Army are not an exception to the impact or effect of good leadership in its operational outcomes.

Just like Sun Tzu, stated, ‘the general who advances without coveting fame and retreats without fearing disgrace, whose only thought is to protect his country and do good service for his sovereign, is the jewel of the kingdom’ and this is the case of Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai if you ask me. He has been bold to admit and strategize at the same time. He is not one that would only churn out commands. He is involved most times in the execution of these commands as evident in the numerous instances where you can’t but find him in the trenches, either reviewing with his commanders or feasting with his soldiers in an attempt to provide that psychological boost that they require to keep the fire burning.

I recall on one of the occasions of an event where Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai spoke extensively about his vision and mission for the Nigerian Army. He was concise in his words and also sincere in its delivery. I recall that three years down the line, he has been able to match his words with action. The promises he made has been religiously fulfilled to the extent that I wondered how he was able to do some of the things he does. However, again, I am reminded by Sun Tzu that ‘thus we may know that there are five essentials for victory: (1) He will win who knows when to fight and when not to fight. (2) He will win who knows how to handle both superior and inferior forces. (3) He will win whose Army is animated by the same spirit throughout all its ranks. (4) He will win who, prepared himself, waits to take the enemy unprepared. (5) He will win who has the military capacity and is not interfered with by the sovereign.” All of these have been systematically incorporated in the operations of the Nigerian Army I must add, and the number three quote says it all about how Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai has been able to turn a once disillusioned Nigerian Army notorious for making retreats instead of advancing in the fight against Boko Haram terrorist to a robust and strategic Nigerian Army that has indeed taken the battle to the Boko Haram terrorist.

This is because the same zeal and commitment exhibited by the Chief of Army Staff are the same displayed across the ranks in the Nigerian Army which has ultimately translated to what is now recorded as the successes of the Nigerian Army in the fight against terrorism and other militant groups in Nigeria.

We must admit that since 2015, the successes recorded by the Nigerian Army has conformed with the promise made by the Chief of Army Staff that never again would the territorial integrity of Nigeria be threatened. The question is, has he kept this promise to Nigeria? The answer is yes. This is on the heels that since the present administration came on board in 2015 and the subsequent appointment of the service chiefs, Nigerians have indeed had a reason to sleep well, especially those of us resident in the federal capital territory, who were once under constant attack from Boko Haram terrorist.

It is instructive to state that since 2015, the federal capital territory has not experienced any Boko Haram threat. This is no mean feat; it just tells of how the Chief of Army Staff has been able to match words with actions and how he has been able to carry all along in the quest to keep Nigeria safe and secured. This, in my opinion, is explained by a quote by Sun Tzu, wherein he stated that ‘regard your soldiers as your children, and they will follow you into the deepest valleys; look upon them as your beloved sons, and they will stand by you even unto death.’

This has been one of the strategies employed by the Chief of Army Staff, and it has yielded tremendous success as regards the war against terrorism in Nigeria. Also, it is instructive to add that Boko Haram terrorist has not been able to spread their tentacles to other parts of Nigeria; instead their remnants have been confined to the fringes of the Lake Chad Basin region.

I think at this point and with the way and manner Lt. Gen Tukur Buratai has carried on since 2015, military historians in Nigeria are duty-bound to document his exploits to serve as reference material in the future. For me, the summation of Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai’s leadership of the Nigerian Army is that of a promise kept and still counting.

  • Why we attacked Ekweremadu, by IPOB

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on Thursday said Saturday’s attack on former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu in Nuremberg, Germany, was to protest his “self-centered politics of survival”.

The proscribed group said while it did not expect the lawmaker to change Nigeria, it expected him to speak out on issues concerning the Igbo.

But, a group, the Divine Mandate International (DMI), faulted IPOB’s threat to attack more Igbo leaders whenever they travel abroad.

It vowed to cooperate with security agencies to ensure that Igbo leaders are safe in the United Kingdom (UK).

Igbo Youth Assembly Worldwide (IYA) said the attack on Ekwerendu was a wake-up call to Igbo leaders of thought to do the right thing.

IPOB’s spokesman Emma Powerful, in a statement, SAID Ekweremadu had not done enough for the Igbo as the longest-serving senator.

“This distinguished Senator is a typical example of the new breed Igbo politician, permanently engaged in the politics of personal survival 40 years after the Biafra genocide.

“Ekweremadu, the distinguished Senator representing Enugu State, is the longest serving Igbo senator.

“He has survived in the murky waters of Nigerian politics by playing to the rules of the politics of survival.

“Enugu, his home state, is besieged on all fronts by Fulani militants. Men, women and children, even priests, are being slaughtered on a daily basis.

“We are yet to hear our distinguished Senator speak with clarity on the matter,” the group said.

According to IPOB, those condemning its members for manhandling Ekweremadu in Germany are poor students of history.

“You do not persuade an angry people with patriotic rhetoric. Leaders who cannot gauge the anger and fury in their land must be truly blind and not qualified to represent them.

“Igbo politicians like Ekweremadu loved Nigeria than the owners of Nigeria, a case of being more Catholic than the Pope.

“They love their prison and zealously promote a system that puts their people down,” the statement added.

DMI, in a letter to Ebonyi State Governor David Umahi by its Chairman Dr Nick Nwokporo, Secretary Dr Francis Kalu and Public Relations Officer Dr Bartholomew Aleke, condemned the attack on Ekweremadu.

The letter reads: “We totally condemn and repudiate in its entirety the shameful attack on Senator Ekweremadu by IPOB group in Germany.

“We also challenge the threat to our Igbo leaders as posted by the group and their sponsors.

“We, therefore, wish to reiterate our unalloyed support and faith in you and other Igbo leaders. The actions of IPOB are barbaric, disgraceful and uninformed.

“We will cooperate with relevant authorities to ensure that the miscreants and their supporters anywhere face the full weight of the law.

“Additionally, we are working with our UK authorities and Ohaneze UK and its affiliate organisations to weed out such actions. The UK can never be Germany.

“Sir, we will not tolerate any intimidation on you or any other Igbo leaders when visiting the UK or wherever, neither will we ignore any threats to your safety when visiting the UK.

“Please, continue your good works and be rest assured of our continued support. May your good heart not be poisoned by threats from people of no standing.”

IYA in a statement by its President-General, Ifeanyi Nwaudunna and Secretary-General Casmir Irekamba, said it had opposed IPOB’s “sit-at-home” orders, its calls for secession and alleged hate speech by its leader Nnamdi Kanu.

“We condemn all these illegal activities of IPOB as misguided and a play by enemies of Ndi Igbo to ground economic activities.

“We also express deep concerns over numerous cheap blackmail and name calling against certain individuals, ethnic groups and the President,” it added.

IYA alleged that enemies of the Igbo connived with disgruntled politicians to embolden IPOB in the guise of marginalisation.

“This propaganda of Igbo marginalisation is a total deceptive and cheap blackmail against the present government by failed Igbo politicians to stir dangerous resentment to sustain their selfish political machinery.

“These failed Igbo politicians are the ones causing disconnection of Ndi Igbo from national level,” it added.

IYA, however, urged Igbo leaders to ensure that the Southeast is not marginalised.

“Therefore, IYA stands with Senator Orji Uzor Kalu when he recently stated that zoning of political office cannot be jettisoned or abolished until the Northeast and Southeast geo-political zones produced the President.

“IYA calls on Igbo leaders of thought to speak up against using Igbo land as a launching pad by disgruntled elements and secessionists within and outside against the constitutional authority of Nigeria,” it said.

Earlier, Ekweremadu’s kinsmen, under the aegis of the Enugu West Peoples Parliament, disagreed with IPOB, saying the former Deputy Senate President has done a lot for his people and the Igbo.

“Let us place on record that Senator Ekweremadu has done so much for his constituents, the Igbo nation, Nigeria and the West African sub-region.

“He has demonstrated quality representation by attracting numerous infrastructure, including roads and bridges, water projects, dams, electricity projects, just to mention a few.

“His non-governmental organisation, the Ikeoha Foundation, has provided jobs and bursary awards to over 6000 indigent students, assisted adult learners on how to read and write.

“Senator Ekweremadu, alongside other Igbo senators, was instrumental in ensuring the bail of IPOP leader Nnamdi Kanu.

“He wrote President Buhari to condemn Operation Python Dance, drew the President’s attention to possibilities of the Python Dance escalating to another civil war, and urged the President to address the obvious marginalisation of the Igbo, etc,” the kinsmen said.

  • Uber driver charged with theft of N12m church equipment

An Uber driver, Richmond Temple, allegedly found in possession of N12million church equipment belonging to The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM), has appeared at an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

Temple, 33, was arraigned by the police on a four-count charge of conspiracy, breaking, entering and stealing.

Prosecuting Sergeant Friday Mameh alleged that the defendant and his accomplices, who are on the run, committed the offences at about 3am on August 9, at TREM (Restoration Parish), Chevron Drive in Eti-Osa Local Government.

“The defendant and others at large did break and enter The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM). They did steal three amplifiers, three electronic keyboards, one laptop, one digital console and one CD printer, all valued at N5million.

“At about 4am, same day, at Ikate roundabout in Eti Osa Local Government, the defendant was found in possession of suspected stolen items in his car, including two Samsung Plasma TV sets, one Wharefedric Pro MP 2800, one Yamaha keyboard, two Peak Monitors, MOSFET 2000 professional power amplifier, one saxophone, two base guitars, all valued at N7milion,” Mameh said.

He said Temple could not give a satisfactory response to questions at the Ilasan Police Station.

Mameh said the offences contravened sections 287, 311 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Temple pleaded not guilty.

His counsel, O. Bridget, applied for his bail “in the most liberal terms.”

Bridget told the court that the defendant was an upright, hardworking family man, who mistakenly picked up thieves in his vehicle.

She said: “The defendant is an Uber driver, who, in the course of his duty, was hired by two men to move their goods. He didn’t know them and didn’t know the equipment were stolen.”

Bridget added that the men fled when the police stopped the vehicle, leaving the defendant to face the consequences.

In a bench ruling, Magistrate B. I. Bakare granted Temple N50,000 bail with two sureties in the like sum, among other conditions.

The case continues on September 19.

  • Agency gets first woman GM

A public health practitioner, Dr. Dolapo Ayokunle Fasawe, has been appointed as the head of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA).

The agency is the environmental regulator for the state in charge of assisting public and private organisations, industries, businesses and non-governmental organisations to achieve compliance by providing environment friendly solutions to varied environmental challenges.

Fasawe is the first woman to head the agency since its establishment 23 years ago.

Prior to her appointment as the sixth general manager, she was the director, Special Projects in the Ministry of Health.

  • LASEMA takes flood enlightenment campaign to communities

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) yesterday embarked on a road show to educate residents on the dangers of flood and preventive actions to take.

It advised local governments with the likelihood of flood to carry out biometric registration of residents for comprehensive database.

The campaign followed a warning by the Nigerian Hydrological Service Agency (NIHSA) that Lagos, Zamfara and some states were susceptible to flood as the heavy rains continue.

The road show, which began at the agency’s head office in Alausa, Ikeja, saw emergency workers distributing handbills and educating communities on the need to keep their drainages clean and avoid blocking water channels.

LASEMA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osayintolu said the exercise was also aimed at strengthening local emergency management committees across the local governments.

Read Also: Sanwo-Olu’s wife to LASEMA, others: shun inter-agency rivalry

He said focus was channelled to those areas with high flood propensity because the state was aware of its vulnerability.

“We want to sensitise Lagosians on how to be well prepared and mitigate flood because the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration has made safety of lives and property a paramount agenda.

“So, we need to ensure that our people are safe and know what to do should their areas be affected by flood. Local governments vulnerable to flood have been directed to undertake biometric registration of residents.

“The biometric will enable us know the population of citizens that are vulnerable to flood and we will be able to ensure their safety. So, if we notice that flood has begun in that local government, those people that have their biometrics with us and we know that they are vulnerable, we will quickly get in touch with them and we will know the process to embark on to evacuate them to our relief camp.

“In doing so, we are also telling the residents that we have carried out a lot of simulation exercises to prepare us for any eventuality. We encourage them to stay calm and not panic, as measures are in place to ameliorate any impact of flood as well as prevent flood.

“We have started with cleaning of our primary and secondary drainage systems. The Ministry of Health has improved our primary health care because sometimes there is always secondary complication associated with flood.

“Our relief camps have been cleaned and ready in case we need to evacuate victims of flood to the place. Key stakeholders have been put on red alert,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.

He warned those building structures on canals and drainages to vacate such places, saying such buildings would be marked by the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) for demolition.

“We are appealing to residents to always get proper approvals and avoid building on canals or drainage channels,” the LASEMA boss said.

  • Civil war: Police recover 10 unexploded ordnances

More Unexploded Ordnances (UXOs) planted during the Nigerian Civil War have been located and successfully recovered from Anambra, Imo and Delta States, the police said on Thursday.

The recoveries, which were executed by the Explosives Ordinance Disposal (EOD) command of the police, were discovered mostly by builders while digging foundations for their properties, Police Commissioner (EOD) Maikudi Shehu told reporters on Thursday.

Shehu, who was in Lagos for the CP EOD’s third quarter conference with senior officers, base/unit commanders, said the UXOs were recovered and demobilised between May and August.

He said: “The successes recorded during this period are in the area of UXOs which were left after the civil war. We recovered some of them in Imo, Anambra and Delta States. They were discovered by builders while digging foundations and who quickly notified the police. We moved in quickly to see how to secure those things and demobilise them without any injury to the public.

“We also ensured we did it quietly to avoid causing panic among the people. About 10 incidents were recorded, and we successfully recovered and demobilised those UXOs. There is need for us to continue to upgrade and ensure that our technicians receive the best training to stay on top of their game for the people’s safety.

“We advice people against touching suspicious objects but they should alert the nearest police station so that EOD experts would be dispatched to inspect, recover and diffuse such objects if they are harmful.”

Addressing the conference themed “Curtailing Internal Security threat in line with Global Best Practices,” Shehu said that command had received two mobile radiation detection equipment donated by the United States Department of Energy (US-DOE), Office of Nuclear Smuggling Detection and Deterrence (NSDD).

According to him, the donation was in furtherance of National Nuclear Security (NNS), and the equipment would be deployed after the training of operators and maintainers.

He added: “They (US) just gave the police two vans which will be inaugurated by the Inspector General of Police (IG). The Americans are sending their personnel here to train our men. They will train the drivers and technicians who will be using these equipments so that they can also train others.”

On the expectations for the next quarter, the police chief said the department would focus on improving on structures, including the expertise of its operatives to continue to deliver good leadership as the lead security agency.

  • EFCC quizzes three Kwara officials over ‘N150m fraud’

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Thursday quizzed some management staff of the Kwara State Scholarship Board over alleged N150 million bursary fraud.

Those interrogated by the operatives of the commission’s Ilorin Zonal Office  include the board’s chairperson, Hajia Fatimoh Yusuf, Executive Secretary Fatai Lamidi and Accountant, Stephen Ajewole, among others.

As at the time of filing this report, the officials were still being grilled by the operatives.

It was gathered that the state government in 2017 and 2018 released N150 million as bursary allowances for 10,000 students, who are indigenes of the state in tertiary institutions.

It was also learnt that the board did not pay up to 4,000 students, but allegedly fraudulently converted the remaining ones to personal use.

The petitioners, who are students of some higher institutions, had alleged that their names appeared as beneficiaries of the bursary allowances, but never received the money.

During interrogation by the operatives of the commission, the students, who sighted their names, matriculation numbers and signatures, became very angry, insisting that the names and matriculation numbers were correct but their signatures were forged.

They claimed not to have been the original beneficiaries of the controversial bursary allowance despite their particulars on the scholarship board’s documents.

The officials of the board had earlier told the operatives of the anti-graft body that the students were issued cheques, but the commission discovered that only few beneficiaries were given cash.
