  • Amaechi gets highest Catholic knight promotion

A MINISTER-designate, Mr Rotimi Amaechi, has been promoted to the highest rank in the Catholic Church under the Order of the Knights of St. John.

The exemplification honour of the Knights of St. John from Grand Master, Nigerian Temple Noble and Exalted Knights of the Holy Cross Knight of St. John International, was conferred on the minister-designate for his service to the Order and humanity for over 20 years at the Pope John Paul II Catholic Centre in Abuja. Monsignor Kenneth Enang, the cleric in charge of the Pope John II Catholic Centre, explained that the promotion was premised on Amaechi’s support for the growth of the Catholic Church.

“We want to thank you, Knights of St John’s, all the other knights, college of knights, for the work you are doing for the church, for the support we get from the knights in many areas not only the financial support but also the moral support.

“The Knights of St. Colombo’s built the seminary we have now at Kuje when Cardinal Ekandem was alive and many of the knights have built churches and handed over to the church.

“We ask God to bless you and your good works and let your labours not be in vain,” he said.

In his acceptance speech, Amaechi expressed his continued  commitment to the Catholic Church and membership of the knights.

The minister-designate also  expressed joy for the promotion, saying:  “For our leaders, our grandmaster here present, thinking that we are qualified; my friend, Collyns and Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, we are very grateful and happy for considering us worthy of this great position. Thank you and God bless you.”

  • NNPC gets NHIS accreditation for medical services

EFFORTS by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to provide qualitative healthcare services to Nigerians got a major boost at the weekend.

The corporation’s Health Maintenance Organisation (HMO) was accredited by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

The accreditation, which granted the corporation the authority to establish and operate a functional HMO, is a forerunner to the enviable plan by the national oil giant to activate a first-rate medical delivery system across the country with potential to halt medical tourism among Nigerians to other jurisdictions.

The corporation’s Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, Mr. Ndu Ughamadu, broke the news on Monday in a statement in Abuja.

Receiving the certificate of accreditation at the NHIS headquarters in Abuja, the Managing Director of the NNPC HMO, Dr. Musa Ribadu, said the corporation, being known for quality performance, was ready to improve the scheme and offer real-time value to prospective beneficiaries of its packages.

According to him, the NNPC HMO Limited is poised to be the most preferred HMO in Nigeria and a role model that NHIS would be proud of in its unique healthcare offerings.

“We are confident that our entry into the market will increase the national coverage statistics by at least one to two digits. We have better knowledge of the Oil and Gas sector that can attract active participation within this sector for the scheme,” Ughamadu said. The NNPC HMO chairman said the initiative to invest in the venture was part of NNPC’s plans to diversify its revenue base and contribute to the corporation’s bottom line.

NHIS Executive Secretary, Dr. Muhammed Nasir Sambo, expressed confidence in the capacity of the NNPC to fully utilise the opportunity offered by the scheme accreditation to operate an efficient HMO that will deliver the much-desired first-rate services to its clientele.

Sambo hailed the corporation for its track record over the years, wishing the national oil company well in its future undertakings.

“I am not unaware that NNPC is one of the most organised organisations in Nigeria and since they are well organised, we have no doubt that NNPC will do whatever it takes to uphold the virtues and tenets of health insurance in Nigeria,” he said.

  • SPIP denies abuse of office allegation against suspended chairman

THE Special Presidential Investigation Panel for Recovery of Public Property (SPIP) has faulted claim that its suspended Chairman, Okoi Obono-Obla, engaged in abuse of office and was reckless in his conduct.

A statement by the SPIP’s prosecutor Oluwatosin Ojaomo said Obono-Obla was being persecuted for his doggedness in the anti-corruption fight by “some powerful forces at the corridors of power” who were uncomfortable with his activities.

Citing cases involving high-profile individuals being investigated by the SPIP, Ojaomo argued that the current move to edge out the panel’s chairman was a reflection of how powerful the forces behind corruption had become in the society.

The statement reads: “Chief Obono-Obla has continued to investigate corruption allegations brought before the panel without putting political colouration, he investigate complaint of corruption and corrupt practices across party lines.

“At this point, the only letter purportedly suspending Chief Obono-Obla is the one that emanated from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF); there is no statement whatsoever from the official quarters, most especially from the President’s spokespersons affirming the state of event on this matter.

“We strongly believe that some powerful forces at the corridors of power are into a power play on this matter. President Muhammadu Buhari has never complained of the activities of the panel till date.

“Is it also a coincidence that the same time Chief Obono-Obla was alleged to have been suspended on the orders of President Buhari, the head of legal unit of the panel, Celsius Ukpong, was also dismissed by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) without any warning or disciplinary committee hearing from him.

“The modus operandi is becoming clearer. From the turn of events, Nigerians can see how cancerous corruption has deepened itself into the fabric of the nation’s system.

“Everyone who attempts to fight corruption fearlessly in Nigeria is always met with stiff resistance as some powerful forces holding Nigeria to economic ransom are hell-bent on propagating the cause of corruption in Nigeria to the detriment of President Buhari’s avowed zero tolerance for corruption.

“We believe that no matter how long it takes, the truth shall prevail and Chief Obono-Obla will complete the statutory assignment given to him by President Buhari and make him proud.

“On the allegation of abuse of office being peddled around, we would have ignored it but for the sake of posterity and to set the record straight. It is on record that Chief Obonp-Obla has continued to conduct the activities of the panel in accordance with the statute that created it, the Recovery of Public Property (Special Provisions) Act and other enabling laws.

“The panel is a child of circumstances and what the panel is going through today is the manifestation of the reality of its purpose and importance to the successful crusade against corruption in our country. How can employment of lawyers to prosecute cases for the panel before courts of competent jurisdiction be an unlawful act?

“It was also alleged that the panel chairman has not been taking directive from the powerful forces at the Presidency before he investigates any petition that comes to the panel. Corruption is a societal issue in Nigeria and all members of the Nigeria public has a role to play to nip the cankerworm to the bud.

“They never said the chairman disobeyed President Buhari, who he is supposed to report to on the activities of the panel, after getting corrupt persons convicted before the court of law.

“It is on record that President Buhari has said times without number that whoever has a corruption case should not use his name to protect himself but should go and clear his name before the security agencies,” Ojaomo said.

  • AIB seeks AfDB funding for Safer Skies programme

NIGERIA’S Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) said at the weekend that it was seeking assistance from African Development Bank (AfDB) to fund the Safer Skies for Africa programme.

The bureau said it reached out to the AfDB, following the decision of the United States (U.S) government to discontinue its sponsorship of the programme from next year.

Its Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer, Akin Olateru, stated this in a media briefing in Lagos at the close of a training seminar for African nations, called “Safer Skies for Africa”.

Heads of accident investigation bureaux from several African countries attended the programme sponsored by AIB and the U.S Department of Transportation.

Olateru said the U.S. government, which had sponsored the programme for many years, did not give any reason for its action.

The AIB chief said the bureau decided to approach the AfDB to consider funding air safety in Africa due to the huge role air transport plays on the continent as an enabler of economic development.

He said the proposal to continental financial body was for it to see it as its corporate social responsibility (CSR) project.

According to him, the programme has impacted positively many African countries, which got training assistance from the U.S Department of Transportation and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

Olateru said: “Today, we have come to the end of the programme where we brought in African nations to an aviation safety gathering sponsored by AIB Nigeria in conjunction with the Safe Sky Africa, which is the Department of Transport in the U.S, and the U.S NTSB.

“Unfortunately, I heard the programme has come to an end as the U.S government will no longer sponsor the safe sky programme. This is very unfortunate because African has really benefited from this programme.

“I think we Africans should put heads together on how we can help ourselves. We have approached AfDB, under its corporate social responsibility, to take up sponsoring the programme. To help Africans, that is why we owe it to ourselves to work together as a team and strengthen aviation and make aviation a safer place to be.”

The AIB chief said talks were ongoing to partner the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to facilitate the mechanism for release of the funds from AfDB for execution of the programme.

Throwing more light on the programme, he said: “I cannot speak on behalf of the U.S government on why they decided to stop the funding the Safe Skies for Africa project. All I know is that we were told that the project has stopped. On the AfDB, I make bold to say this is my initiative of getting AfDB to sponsor this project to the benefit of Africa nations.

“I had a meeting with the ICAO president two months ago in Montreal, Canada. I had a discussion with him on how AfDB can continue to sponsor this project through ICAO because AfDB will not just release money to AIB Nigeria; it has to be an independent organisation, which is ICAO. It is not just to Nigeria but to African nations.

“There will be another meeting during the next ICAO Assembly on the clear-cut modality on how to get this done. So, talks are still on, on how to make this work.”

  • 2.5m SMEs to get financial support, training, says Osinbajo

VICE-President Prof Yemi Osinbajo has said the Federal Government will provide micro-lending to about 2.5 million small trades and businesses to the lowest income earners through the Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme (GEEP).

Osinbajo stated this at the weekend in Lagos during the Inclusive Business Policy Development Programme with the theme: African Policy Road Show: Building Robust Policies for Increased Social Investment and Inclusive Business.

The Vice-President said the beneficiaries would include traders, women cooperatives, market women, enterprising youths, farmers and agricultural workers.

The package, which would be managed by the Bank of Industry (BoI), he said, is in partnership with over 20 private sector and donor partners at local and international levels.

They include the World Bank, Ford Foundation, MacArthur Foundation and Department for International Development (DFID), ActionAid and Accenture.

Others are: Dangote Group, Lagos Business School, the Nigeria Economic Summit Group, Economic Research Institute, and the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) among others.

It was organised by the African Venture Philanthropy Alliance and the Inclusive Business Action Network (IBAN).

Osinbajo, who was represented by the Special Adviser (SA) to the President on Economic Matters, Dipolu Adeyemi, explained that interested persons in Marketmoni or Farmermoni could apply online as well as through the BoI, the state focal person, the state ministries of trade, commerce, agriculture or women affairs.

The Vice-President said it was a six-month loan tenor of between N10,000 and N350,000 with a halt of two weeks.

He said the tenor may be extended for Farmermoni, depending on the nature of the farm produce or product.

According to him, successful applicants must be paid directly, while membership in a cooperative or association is mandatory.

Osinbajo said the leadership of the cooperatives must ensure credibility and timely payment.

“There is no collateral interest element. The conditions for applying for Marketmoni and Farmermoni loans are the setting up of a cooperative (as a pressure group) or belonging to a cluster with an off-taker, the opening of an account and the acquisition of Bank Verification Number (BVN),” he said.

Applicants must also have a business location, the Vice-President said.

Osinbajo said there is between 2.5 per cent and five per cent administrative fee to be paid to the aggregators and agents who are recruited to recover the loans from successful applicants.

He also said the N-Power was the employability and enhancement programme of the Federal Government aimed at imbibing the learn-worker-entrepreneurship culture in youths between the ages of 18 and 35.

The Vice-President said applications were done online to create a level-playing field for everyone and determine which applicants’ details would enable selection and direct payment through the bank accounts and BVN submitted.

Osinbajo said for graduates, around 500,000 had been deployed to active service in the teaching, health, agriculture, tax and monitoring spheres, in addition to being paid N30,000 monthly incomes.

According to him, the N-Power volunteers are given devices with relevant content for continuous learning to facilitate their ability to successfully implement the selected vocation and enable them take ownership of their lives.

Also, the Vice-President explained that for non-graduates, about 26,000 in the N-Build, automobile, hospitality and technology (hardware and software) categories had been, or were being trained in the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

He said after the training, they were placed as interns for nine months through a close collaboration with CORBON, NADDC and NIHOTOUR.

  • Evil servants?

First, it was the President of the 8th Senate, Bukola Saraki, dragged before the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), for alleged corrupt practices.

Then, it was the former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen, arraigned before that same administrative court.

Now, it appears the turn of Winifred Oyo-Ita, sitting but embattled Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, now grappling with a reported N3 billion alleged sleaze, which though is still at the investigative stage.

What is it about Nigeria’s top elite fitting into the apocryphal but hardly flattering description as the contemporary civil servant as “evil servant”?

Yes, Dr. Saraki escaped conviction; while Justice Onnoghen got convicted by the CCT, after a failed play at legal technicalities to buy time; and crass stonewalling to remain head of Nigeria’s judiciary, even when it was clear his immaculate judicial robe was smudged beyond redemption.

Still, neither Saraki’s innocence nor Onnoghen CCT guilt and conviction (a stain on the Judiciary) drove up public confidence in the public services, as Caesar’s squeaky clean redoubt (witness: Caesar’s wife must not only be above board but must be seen to be so).  That popular perception of the government, as a wild joint of unbridled sleaze, persists.

That is the sinking feeling this Oyo-Ita scandal brings  — the head of the federal civil service, in a N3 billion scandal!  Does it then connote that the engine room of Federal Government policy has become reggae star Max Romeo’s father’s place of worship that had become a den of thieves? Scary!

First it was the Senate.  Then, it was the Judiciary.  Now, it’s the bureaucracy.  What’s happening?

Still, one hopes all of these are allegations that would be cleared in no time.  But that would appear the optimist’s fond wish, just to maintain some balance of sanity.

What with the alleged racketeering in esta-code falsifications to steal from the common till; alleged abuse of office to funnel contracts to cronies and proxies; an alleged slush account which N600 million could not be explained; and a putative collusion with a former minister, which suggests a sinister tag-team, of a ministry’s two top dogs, to fleece the same government they both swore to diligently serve?

Then, the gender question, after the Diezani sleaze scandal!  Isn’t anyone, among the Nigeria elite in the public space, sane again?  Doesn’t the feminine gender count for something again, when the question is integrity?  Isn’t there any upright person left, male or female, at least to earn Jehovah’s mercy, to avert the utter destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah?

It’s an unflattering time out there, for the Nigerian elite.  Still, Hardball prays — and fasts too — that the Oyo-Ita scandal is only a glitch that would be cleared after dutiful investigations; and the nation’s federal bureaucracy would receive a clean bill of health.

The civil servant as evil servant?  It’s quite a difficult bone to swallow!

  • IPOB targets Southeast governors, Nwodo, Buratai for attacks abroad

PROSCRIBED separatist group Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) is targeting Southeast governors, Ohanaeze President Nnia Nwodo, Chief of Army Staff (COAS)  Lt. Gen Tukur Buratai for attacks abroad, its leader Nnamdi Kanu, said on Sunday.

He also offered a reward of N1 million for credible information on overseas travel itinerary of the governors and Igbo leaders.

He gave reasons the group attacked Senator Ike Ekweremadu in Germany at the weekend.

Kanu spoke in an 87 minutes broadcast on the rogue radio station, Radio Biafra, last night. The broadcast was monitored by our correspondent.

He said a member of the group had made the money available for credible information anytime the governors of the Southeast and other leaders from the zone would be travelling.

“So, if you are working in any Government House in Southeast and you know which city in the world the governor is going to be, inform us so that we will mobilise for him and you will be rewarded with N1 million”

He accused the governors of being behind the proscription of IPOB. “They said they proscribed IPOB to douse rising tension in the region. What caused the tension is because the military raided my house in Umuahia”

He also accused them of secretly approving the RUGA settlement in the Southeast.

On the attack on Mr Ekweremadu, the IPOB leader said the ex-Deputy Senate President connived with the governors to proscribed his group.

“They also brought the army to raid my House in Umuahia. How many times has he spoken against the killings and kidnapping happening in his own state?” queried Mr Kanu.

“He (Ekweremadu) went to celebrate New Yam Festival in Germany when his people are being killed and our women being raped. Where did they get the tubers of yam because there is none in Igboland since all the farmlands have been destroyed by herdsmen”.

The IPOB leader also accused Ekweremadu of misappropriating money budgeted for the construction of Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway by former President Goodluck Jonathan administration.

The Nation could not independently verify his accusations against Ekweremadu.

Apart from the governors, Kanu listed others on the group’s overseas watch list to include Ohaneze Ndigbo President-General Nwodo and Lt.-Gen. Buratai.

Kanu said that Nwodo accused Igbo Youths of carrying out the recent killings, kidnappings and other criminal activities in the Southeast, especially in Enugu State.

For the COAS Buratai, Kanu said the group will never forgive him for his role in various killings and atrocities allegedly committed by the military in the southeast

He warned them to steer clear of any foreign country for their own good.

“We have nominated five persons each in every country of the world who are ready to be arrested and be jailed for this purpose. Many of us have been killed so what is there in going to jail”, he said.

He praised the outspokenness of Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe and Mr. Femi Fani- Kayode.

“We campaigned for Abaribe’s re-election because he always spoke the truth every time about what is happening in the country and today he is the highest political office holder in Igboland”

“Fani Kayode is not an Igbo man but he always stands for the truth and so we have enormous respect for him”.

Kanu also claimed that the military is beginning another Operation Python Dance in the Southeast (Monday) which is targeted at his group.

  • Attack on ex-Deputy Senate President rude, says Ohanaeze

APEX Igbo socio-cultural group Ohanaeze Ndigbo on Sunday condemned the attack on the former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, by some members of the out-lawed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) in Germany.

Ekweremadu was in Numberg Germany to deliver a keynote address at the New Yam Festival organised by the Igbo in Germany.

A statement by group’s President-General Chief John Nnia Nwodo reads: “The assault on Ekweremadu by Igbos in Germany, described as IPOB, is disappointing, grotesque and dangerous for Igbo solidarity.

“This violent, rude, impertinent, divisive and discourteous style of IPOB or IPOB instigated miscreants is damaging to our cause. It strengthens the case of those who describe them as terrorists and weaken our case against the infringement of our fundamental human rights.

“Ekweremadu negotiated the sureties and securities for Nnamdi Kanu’s release on bail. He does not deserve this picketing and disgrace. A disgrace to him is a disgrace to Igbo race.

“Whilst I condemn the attack on our revered son and leader, I call on the law enforcement agencies in Germany to bring to book the perpetrators of this despicable act. It is un-Igbo. It is disgraceful.”

  • Ekweremadu: Governors, senators, others knock IPOB

GOVERNORS, senators and ethnic groups rose in unison on Sunday against weekend’s assault on Senator Ike Ekweremadu by members of the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) in Nuremberg, Germany.

Former Deputy Senate President Ekweremadu was in the German city to speak at the Second Annual Cultural Festival and Convention organized by Ndi-Igbo Germany when he was attacked by people who claimed to be sympathisers of IPOB, claiming that he did not represent the southeast appropriately.

They also threatened to mete out the same treatment to governors and other leaders from the region on visitation to Europe.

The outlawed group listed other leaders on its watch list to include Governor Dave Umahi (Ebonyi); Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu); Willie Obiano (Anambra); Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia) and Ohanaeze Ndigbo President-General Nnia Nwodo.

The 64-seconds video of the attack on Ekweremadu, which went viral, showed how the protesters physically assaulted the senator and tore his traditional jumper (Isi Agu) to shreds before he was spirited away by the organisers from the venue of the event before the police were called in.

South East Governors, speaking under the auspices of the Southeast Governors Forum (SGF), described the order given by IPOB to its members to attack governors and other Igbo leaders as “empty threat”.

They argued that attacking them would not solve the problem of IPOB’s agitation for the state of Biafra.

SGF Chairman and Ebonyi State David Umahi in a statement by his media aide Emmanuel Uzo, said: “They have no such spread and powers to track down South-East governors for attack anywhere in the world. They are too small. I don’t want to say they sound so cowardly, but they can’t see the governors to attack.”

Umahi said the governors had no problem IPOB members to warrant such an order.

According to him, the insecurity in the Southeast was a national challenge that was under the Federal Government’s command and control.

He said: “If there is any issue IPOB holds against the governors, they should come home to settle it in Igboland instead of a foreign land.

“What happened was a security issue which was within the purview of the Federal Government. Attacking governors in a foreign land is a wild goose chase. We love them because they are our children.

“IPOB cannot achieve Biafra alone, except with the collaboration of all stakeholders including the governors. They don’t need to attack the governors to achieve Biafra.”

The governor warned them not to allow political opportunists to use them to destroy the Southeast.

“They should come together and work with the governors and the Ohanaeze Ndigbo to achieve the Igbo presidency in 2023 instead of fighting the governors. We want them to be close to us instead of taking the struggle to the international arena,” Umahi said.

Delta Governor Ifeanyi Okowa also condemned the attack on Ekweremadu.

His Chief Press Secretary Olisa Ifeajika said the incident was pathetic, shameful and an embarrassment to Nigeria.

He said Ekweremadu had been a great patriot and defender of his people as well as the down trodden, and did not deserve the kind of ill-treatment meted to him by Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) members in Germany.

“I join men of goodwill in condemning the attack on Senator Ike Ekweremadu, who has been a great patriot and leader of exemplary behaviour.

“It is pathetic and shameful that an event organised to chart the way forward for the Igbo race and Nigeria in general ended up in such a disgraceful and embarrassing manner to the country.

“As Nigerians, we are trained to respect our elders and leaders as well as people in authority.

“I am particularly happy that some of the culprits have been arrested and I urge the German authorities to take necessary action on the perpetrators of the heinous act.

“I urge all Nigerians, home and abroad, to be of good behaviour wherever they find themselves as such acts of lawlessness do not bring glory to the nation,” he said

The Senate leadership rose in solidarity with Ekweremadu.

Senate President Ahmad Lawan; Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege; Minority Leader Eyinnaya Abaribe and Chief Whip Orji Uzor Kalu condemned the attack in separate statements.

Lawan said: “It’s incredibly absurd for any group to blame Ekweremadu for the spate of insecurity in the Southeast. The attackers had fingered Ekweremadu alone of the Igbo leaders ‘conspiring’ with outsiders to terrorise the zone.

“It is incredibly absurd for anybody to blame the distinguished senator for the violent criminal activities in his home base, the purported reason cited by the mob for the bewildering attack.

“Senator Ekweremadu, like all his distinguished colleagues in the Ninth Assembly of the Senate, is concerned about the insecurity and other challenges in that area and other parts of Nigeria. Senator Ekweremadu has also been at the forefront of the patriotic efforts to find lasting solutions to the challenges.

“The barbaric attack on Senator Ekweremadu at a forum to which he was invited to contribute to charting a course for the progress and happiness of Ndigbo debase our values as civilised people. It is most reprehensible and should be condemned by all right-thinking Nigerians.”

The Senate President urged the German authorities to identify those involved in the despicable act so that the law can take its course against them.

Omo-Agege said the attack was not only a dastardly exportation of irrationality, but also an aggressive international affront against the image of Igbo and Nigeria.

Speaking through his media aide, Yomi Odunuga, the Deputy President of the Senate expressed shock over the undeserved assault and called on law enforcement agencies in Germany to investigate and bring to book all those involved in the vicious attack.

Omo-Agege said: “The aggressively discourteous IPOB elements that carried out the disgraceful assault have shown themselves as enemies of democratic norms and values.

“What they did is not only a violent assault against the good image of the Igbo race across the world, but also an aggressive attack against the traditional norms  of a people known to be hardworking and respectful of meaningful contributions by leaders such as Senator Ekweremadu.

“Such disappointing physical abuse also grossly disregards Senator Ekweremadu’s democratic antecedents and his long-standing commitment to the cause of his people. But, as he has said out of the usual largeness of his forgiving heart, these people know not what they do.

“Such criminal attacks, with other anti-social attempts to accuse, condemn and lynch anyone remain utterly condemnable and illegal, notwithstanding whether it takes place on Nigerian or foreign soil as it is the easiest invitation to anomie.”

Kalu said he was disappointed, irritated and worried, adding that the only way the Southeast can be prosperous is by embracing dialogue, peace and unity.

Urging Ndigbo to respect leaders at all levels, the Senate Chief Whip called on the Embassy of Nigeria in Germany, the German government and appropriate authorities to bring the perpetrators of the ugly incident to book.

Kalu said: “The assault on the Senator is a slap on Igbo leaders regardless of age, party affiliation and religion. The perpetrators of the uncivilized act must face the wrath of the law.

“Senator Ekweramadu is not only one of the Igbo leaders but also a prominent Nigerian and as such should be accorded due respect by all and sundry at home and abroad.

“For the Southeast to move forward, the people of the region must embrace dialogue as a way of resolving pertinent issues and eschew violence.”

While appealing to Ndigbo across the globe to be law-abiding and good ambassadors of Nigeria, Kalu urged Igbo groups to educate their members on the consequences of social vices.

Ababribe did not only condemn the despicable act, but also said it smacked of utter ignorance of the prevailing situation at home with regards to what the leaders are doing in the circumstance.

He said “It is a brazen show of ingratitude to a man who has been at the fore front in the struggle for all that is good for the Igbo race”.

Abaribe said he and the entire minority caucus in the Senate are appalled on the very nauseating attack on the revered Ekweremadu for no reason whatsoever.

According to him, Ekweremadu has given his all in standing for the Igbo race, recalling how the lawmaker and others stuck out their necks to arrange and stand for surety for Kanu.

Abaribe said: “Obviously this is not how to repay a man, an outstanding leader of men, an unpretentious Igbo leader who has given his all even going as far as deploying his means to arrange for the bail of Nnamdi Kanu, not minding the repercussions to his illustrious political career.

“It is unfortunate. The perpetrators of the attack should know that as Igbos, we respect elders and reverence our leaders. The unwarranted attack is not the character of the Igbo. This is un-Igbo.

“It is most worrisome and even inconceivable that the attackers will choose an auspicious occasion where our people are celebrating and showcasing our rich culture to exhibit such unbecoming and condemnable conduct in the name of agitation.”

Senator Shehu Sani described the attack on ex-Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, by members of the proscribed IPOB, as “spanking the wrong horse with the wrong whip on the wrong track.”

Condemning the attack via his verified Twitter handle @ShehuSani on Sunday, the senator had tweeted

The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Buba (APC-Adamawa), also condemned the attack.

Buba urged Nigeria’s Ambassador to Germany, Ambassador Yusuf Tugga, to ensure the attackers are made to face justice.

According to Buba, given the high personality profile and the public service record which Ekweremadu parades, it was unthinkable for any individual or group anywhere in the world to attack him in such a manner.

He said: “I, therefore, in very strong terms, condemn in its entirety the action of the group of Igbo people, alleged to be members of the outlawed IPOB.”

National Vice Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Southeast, Austin Umahi, also condemned the attack.

Umahi frowned at the action of the group against Ekweremadu, who he said has been on the forefront of the struggle against the marginalisation of Ndi-Igbo in the Nigerian Federation.

The zonal chairman said he was overwhelmed by surprise that some individuals could hide under the name of the proscribed IPOB to attack Ekweremadu after all his efforts as the leader of Southeast Senate caucus in the Eighth Senate to secure the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the self-acclaimed leader of the group, from detention.

He said for Senator Ekweremadu to have travelled to far away Nurnberg in Germany to attend the second annual festival and convention organised by Ndi-Igbo residents there, was a demonstration of his undying love for Ndi-Igbo which he has been exhibiting over the years.

He urged Ekweremadu not to be discouraged by the attack; but see it as one of the many sacrifices he has to pay in pursuit for justice and better treatment for Ndi-Igbo both within and outside the country.

He also called for the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators of the dastardly act to serve as a deterrent to others.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide called on IPOB to ceasefire on its vow to attack Igbo leaders.

In a statement, President-General of the Ohanaeze Youth Council Worldwide, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, called for the cease fire and dialogue between the pro-Biafran groups and Igbo leaders

He said: “Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide watched keenly the recent harassment and assault on the immediate past Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu at the New Yam Festival at Nuremberg Germany.

“This is s a calculated plot to destroy the elite Conspiracy theories and concepts, and instill disciplinary actions against Igbo leaders by suspected Biafra agitators who feel that our leaders brought the current ordeal Igbo are facing now in Nigeria.

“We condemn vehemently the introduction of mob action against Igbo leaders, as this is a wrong precedence that should be condemned.

“We believe that there are likely more targeted Igbo leaders on their lists, who may face the consequences of failed leadership in the Southeeast, but Ekweremadu’s assault is contrary to Igbo norms and values, and should be condemned vehemently by all stakeholders.”

The Southeast APC Young Progressive Forum, led by Pascal Otimpku Chizoba also condemned the attack.

They said it was against Igbo’s core values and respect for elders for IPOB members in Germany to treat Ekweremadu that way.

“This is barbaric and unacceptable to us”, Chizoba said, describing the incident as an embarrassment to the Igbo aation and the country.

“It is also shamefully pathetic that an event, which was nobly put together by Ndi-Igbo community, whose members make up the majority of Nigerians living in Germany, ended up in such a disgraceful manner, he said.”

The Southeast APC Young Progressive Forum led by Comrade Pascal Otimpku Chizoba also condemned the attack.

The group said the action is against  Igbo’s Core Values and Respect for elders for IPOB Members in Germany to treat Ekweremadu that way.

“This is barbaric and unacceptable to us”, further describing the incident as an embarrassment to the Igbo Nation and the country.

Chizoba said: “It is also shamefully pathetic that an event, which was nobly put together by Ndi-Igbo community, whose members make up the majority of Nigerians living in Germany, ended up in such a disgraceful manner.

“Obviously, this is not how to repay a man,who has contributed his quota to the Nation building.

“Irrespective of Political Affiliation, Senator Dr Ike Elweremadu is an outstanding Leader of men in Enugu State,South East and Nigeria and an unpretentious Igbo Leader.

“We may not agree with him Politically because Of differences in Parties, but this is highest height of insult on Igbo Leaders.

“Last time it was Former Governor Rochas Okorocha at Chetham’s House London. Today, it is Senator Dr Ike Ekweremadu.

“The unwarranted attack is not the character of the Igbo younger Generation. This is un-Igbo.

“It is most worrisome and even inconceivable that the attackers will choose an great occasion where our people are celebrating and showcasing our rich culture heritage Iri-ji (New Year Featival) to exhibit such unbecoming and condemnable conduct in the name of agitation”

The group gueried what Nnamdi Kanu was agitating for, adding that  it was beyond  agitation and could not be agitation.

“We urge our fellow youths of Southeast extraction and every right thinking Nigerian not to identify with such behaviour.

“Yes, Nigeria is going through a lot. There are a lot of killings and Insecurity in the country. It is not what only person can solve or what one Political Party can do.

“It is a Collective responsibility of all to find a solution to our problems as a people. We should not blame it on one person.

“Enough is enough. Nnamdi Kanu should be called to order. Resorting to mob mentality and venting the spleen on our leaders will rather create a vacuum that will leave our people helpless and confused in the circumstance”, the group said.

  • N209m seized asset: ICPC to prosecute Fed Govt official

THE Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on Sunday said it has secured final forfeiture of a N209million property by an official of the Budget Office of the Federation, Mr. Henry Ilemona Oyibo.

Oyibo was alleged to have acquired Jerijo Plaza and Event Centre in Karu, Nasarawa State far above his legitimate income.

A statement by the spokesperson for the commission, Mrs. Rasheedat A. Okoduwa, said Oyibo would still be prosecuted.

The statement said a Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court sitting in Nyanya, Abuja, presided over by Hon. Justice Muawiyah Baba Idris, granted ICPC a final forfeiture order on the property.

The statement said: “The property, a shopping mall, known as Jerijo Plaza and Event Centre, located at No. 6 Muham Street, Off Abacha Road, Karu, Nasarawa State, is believed to have been acquired by Mr. Henry Ilemona Oyibo with the proceeds of crime.

“Oyibo’s travails started when ICPC profiled him as a result of investigation into another matter. Further investigation revealed that he could not have acquired the property from his legitimate income.

“This necessitated an application for an order of interim forfeiture which was granted by the same court on the property on 17th October, 2018.

“The court then adjourned the matter to 5th November, 2018 for ‘’interested persons to show cause why the property should not be finally forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria’’.

“Following a newspaper publication by ICPC, ‘interested persons’ including the respondent and his brother, Raymond Oyibo  ‘showed cause’, but this was countered by the commission in an affidavit stating that the respondents had not shown ‘good cause’ for the court to vacate the interim forfeiture order, and the matter was again adjourned to 18th June, 2019.

“On the adjourned date, Justice Idris found no merit in the separate affidavits of the respondents and consequently ruled for a final forfeiture of the property to the Federal Government.

“Following the final forfeiture order by the court, the stage has been set for the prosecution of Mr. Oyibo.”
