•Toni Morrison, first black woman to win the Nobel Prize for literature, haunts us with her prose

She was an American heroine. She was the black American empress of letters. She was a bold, if mellifluous voice of black women all over the world. She also transcended her race in this regard as she lit the tinder of feminine freedom for all women of whatever colour, creed or caste. More important, Toni Morrison was a torch bearer of justice of a universal colour. And she did that by putting pen to paper.

The first black woman to win the Nobel Prize in literature died on August 5 at the age of 88. When she won the august prize, the Nobel Prize committee summed up her literary mission in the following fitting words: “who in novels characterised by visionary force and poetic import, gives life to an essential aspect of American reality.”

Morrison started her literary journey with her novel, “The Bluest Eye’, and from that seed, she knew what she wanted to tell the world.  The story about a girl who hated her identity and sought freedom in the search for a pair of blue eyes, a biological exclusive of the Caucasian race. But she had to suffer paternal rape and social ostracism within her own race and family to learn the futility of claiming an illusory identity. That book, though flawed in some respects in the eyes of her critics, reverberated with promise.

She also stole attention with her second novel, ‘Sula’, a tale of friendship between two women, and signalled by the act of a woman who sets her leg before a moving train. She, however, had grudging adulation until she unveiled her unforgettable novel, ‘Song of Solomon, an effort that earned her the prestigious National Books Critics Circle Award. She became the first black woman to be listed in the Book of The Month Club, and the second black person, Richard Wright with his ‘The Native Son’ being the first in the 1940’s.

But Morrison’s masterwork is ‘Beloved’, a novel of extraordinary pathos and humanity. It is the act of a mother, in the age of slavery, who did not want her daughter to taste, not least endure the savagery of its dehumanising cudgels. Her option was grim. She killed her in one of the most documented passages of filicide either in fiction or non-fiction. The New York Times book critic Michiko Kakutani described the scene as “so brutal and disturbing that it appears to warp time before and after in a single unwavering line of fate.”

Yet the story was based on an actual story of an enslaved woman Margaret Garner, but Morrison wove it into an eternal skein that seizes the empathy even of an unconcerned public. In spite of her great work, she had never been given America’s top prizes, the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize. This outraged 48 black writers and activists, including the great Maya Angelou of ‘I know why the Caged Bird Sings’, to fulminate over the discrimination. The heart of the academies was twitched and months later, ‘Beloved’ was decorated with the Pulitzer Prize.

Some have described her as the best American writer since Walter Lippmann. Her writing is unique because of the fidelity to her African American roots, tapping from the ghost stories and folk tales that her parents told her when she was a little girl. Her prose carries the pains, frustrations, castrated hopes of generations of African Americans. Her voice any African can relate to, including her novel ‘Paradise’ penned after the Nobel Prize.

She has been variously decorated. Prominent among them are the National Book Foundation’s Medal of Distinguished Contribution to American Letters, the Thomas Jefferson Medal and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

  • Why power will remain epileptic, by TCN

UNLESS the Distribution Companies (DisCos) are recapitalised, power supply will remain epileptic, Managing Director of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Mr. Usman Mohammed, has said.

Mohammed spoke in Kano during an inspection of TCN’s facilities.

The TCN chief said due to the slow pace of investment by the DisCos, most of TCN’s installations are not properly utilised, making it imposible to improve on power supply.

He said the TCN was working round the clock to rehabilitate, replace and ensure adequate maintenance of its facilities across the country to pave the way for effective power distribution and supply by the DisCos.

Mohammed said: “We have proposed the recapitalisation of the DisCos. That is where we believe improvement in the Power sector lies. We are calling on all Nigerians to clamour for the recapitalisation of the DisCos. If they are not recapitalised, there is no way they can rehabilitate their existing network.

“So, you can see that two feeders here are out because the feeders are weak. Therefore, any time there is rain, those feeders cannot function.

“The reason they cannot function is because they were not rehabilitated. This is what TCN is pushing for DisCos to do.

“On the capacity of power in the nation, TCN is working hard. We have not solved all our problems. So, anywhere we have problems, we have solutions to them.

“We are discouraging redundancy across the country and we have achieved a certain level of control over our frequency. We have a spinning reserve with a road network and we are doing all our best to make it work. We have a roadmap which we are following religiously.”

He added: “In Kano, I have discovered that most of the transformers, especially the one in Dakata area of the metropolis, are under-utilised. Sometimes, you hear that TCN is not supplying DisCos with adequate electricity for distribution. In reality, it is not true.

“If you look at the transformers in Dakata, which is 60 KV, you can see that the transformer is idle, apart from the one in the middle. None of them is taking maximum loads.

“One of the things we need to propagate is to ask the DisCos to invest in their network so that they will be able to take enough loads. As you can see, the implementation of transmission and rehabilitation that we are embarking upon is on course and everything is moving fine.

“In this sub-station at Dakata, you can see that we have 30 MVA, but we going to replace it with 60 MVA. We are through with the procurement and the installation has reached advanced stage.

“So, the line from Kumbotso to Dakata would be re-conducted to put high capacity of conductor so that it can carry twice the current capacity. So, this is what TCN is embarking upon to boost electricity to the DisCos.

“With all these efforts from our side without commensurate investment by the DisCos, Nigerians would not feel the investment we are putting in place to improve distribution and supply of electricity to Nigerians. That is why we are asking you journalists to enlighten them to invest.”

Air Marshal Abubakar urged personnel and officers of the Air Force to evolve new ways of dealing with emerging security threats in the land.

He, however, said whatever measure being adopted should be done in accordance with the rules of engagement of the service.

Air Marshal Abubakar, who praised the personnel and officers of the service for their commitment and zeal as demonstrated over the past few years, said the sacrifices made by those who paid the supreme price for peace and unity of the country would not be in vain.

He said: “It is with great pleasure, and gratitude to the Almighty, that I heartily wish all officers, airmen/airwomen and civilian members of staff of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) a Happy Eid-El-Kabir!  I pray that the joy of the season abides with you and your families.

“I wish to particularly thank commanders at all levels for their commitments and sacrifices. I urge you to continue to think outside the box whilst evolving innovative solutions in order to ensure high level of aircraft and equipment serviceability as well as robust logistics support capability for enhanced combat readiness to deal with the threats to our nation.

“It is gratifying to note that our gallant pilots as well as our Regiment and Special Forces personnel are adapting creditably to the ever changing nature of these threats and making good progress.

“We must also sustain and improve on the level of professionalism in the Service through robust, job-focused training; commitment to improving personnel welfare as well as result-oriented Research and Development (R&D), which have all had a positive impact on our operational effectiveness.

“Notwithstanding our modest gains, we must appreciate the enormity of the challenges ahead, as we strive to consolidate and work with sister Services and other stakeholders to rid our great nation of the threats to her security and development.

“Accordingly, as we go forward, I enjoin you all to redouble your efforts in dealing decisively with all enemies of the State, while remaining professional in the discharge of your duties. You must be courageous and, working in synergy with other security agencies, continue to take the battle to the armed bandits and terrorists, not minding their malicious propaganda.”

  • Jonathan’s ex-aide, senator linked to Iwu’s N1.2b cash

DETECTIVES are probing how a former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Maurice Iwu, got the N1.230 billion he allegedly disbursed to influence the 2015 general election.

Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) investigators have discovered that the cash was paid through an aide of former President Goodluck Jonathan, and an oil magnate, into an account traced to Iwu’s firm.

One of them gave N758 million while the other paid N445 million into the firm’s account whose only signatory is the former INEC chief.

Six other suspects are under EFCC probe in connection with the poll bribery cash.

A former senator from the Southwest, who played a role in the constitutional conference organised by former President Goodluck Jonathan, received about N170 million but denied that it was a bribe. He told investigators that he executed a job for Iwu who paid him for his services.

The EFCC has launched a probe into the deal between them.

It was learnt that Iwu allegedly created a group in 2014 made up of past directors of INEC who served in the Southwest.

The co-opted directors served in Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Osun and Lagos states with the mandate to monitor the 2015 elections.

Members of the group were found to have benefited from the N1.230 billion largesse which was allegedly shared by the former INEC chair.

A brief on the plot by Iwu and others reads in part: “Iwu transferred funds to the retired INEC directors as well as others who were involved in the election from his account to which he is the sole signatory.

“Analysis of the account showed that several suspicious deposits were made by Buraeu De Change firms into the account.

“The total sum of N1, 230,000,000 was deposited into the account by BDC operators between between 29/10/2014 and 31/3/ 2015.”

A highly-placed source said: “To cover up their tracks, $5 million cash was made available for Iwu’s project but routed through Bureau De Change operators.

The source added: “Iwu has denied having any knowledge of the naira equivalent of the $5 million deposited into his firm’s Account by the BDC operators.

“He said he cannot recall the source of the N1.230 billion deposited into his account.”

Besides EFCC’s investigation, an INEC in-house committee, headed by a National Commissioner, Baba Arfo Shettima, came up with the following findings:

    • an NGO, West African Network of Electoral Observers, was used to share the bribe to INEC;
    • a former chairman of INEC (names withheld) coordinated the large-scale bribery scandal;
    • many former Resident Electoral Commissioners(RECs) and retired administrative secretaries were used to penetrate INEC in all the 36 states for the bribery to alter poll results;
    • some serving RECs and directors benefited from the bribery scandal as confirmed by EFCC’s investigations
    • a REC collected between N107 million and N140 million bribe;
    • while some RECs and INEC officials collected as much as over N100m, others were given as low as N150,000 to compromise the electoral system;

About 205 INEC officials were implicated in the 2015 poll bribery scandal to the tune of  N23.9 billion.

More than N3.4 billion cash has been recovered from INEC officials by the EFCC.

The former INEC boss was arraigned before Justice Chuka Obiozor of a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos on August 8 for allegedly laundering N1.2 billion. He pleaded not guilty to a four count-charge. He was admitted to bail in the sum of N1 billion with two sureties in like sum after his bail application was heard on August 10.

  • AbdulRazaq urges support for reforms, paradigm shift in Kwara

Kwara state Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq on Monday solicited the people’s support for his reforms agenda and paradigm shift in governance.

He described the 2019 election as a referendum that saw people choosing development and prudence over waste and underdevelopment.

AbdulRazaq said this at the 2nd Annual Grand Durbar ceremony organised by the Ilorin Emirate Council, saying the people’s resolve for a new dawn meant a need to eschew actions or inactions that had made development and growth difficult in the past.

The governor hailed the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, and the Ilorin Emirate Council for the historical cultural event.

“We must embrace reforms which are often tough at the beginning. We must make tough choices in our decision to move our state forward,” according to the Governor, who was represented by his Deputy, Mr. Kayode Alabi.

“I have made my personal decision along this line. I will not use public funds to enjoy or gratify myself at the expense of the people. Public resources will only be applied strictly to public projects and overheads approved and budgeted for. We will not entertain excesses of any sort. With people’s interest as the guiding principle, we will do things differently and purposefully to get more impactful results.

“I appeal to this distinguished gathering of our people to unite behind this agenda for the progress of our community and generations yet unborn. Anything short of this will keep us moving in a circle and that would defeat the purpose of our people standing in the sun to vote the way they did.”

AbdulRazaq reiterated his resolve to institutionalize the various cultural activities in the state to boost tourism and economic growth; including the Durbar which he called the heritage of Ilorin people and a testament to the bravery and valour of their forebears especially the royal lineage of Sheikh Alimi.

The Governor said prudent management of resources is necessary to drive growth.

He added: “Let me clarify this too. Kwara is immensely blessed with abundant natural and human resources, as the quality of attendance at this Durbar shows. Kwara is however not so rich in monetary terms.  But that was not the reason for the slow development. The problem was that the little resources Kwara had was not going into building sustainable future. This is what we need to change, this is what we are changing, and that requires the support of all of you.”

The Emir thanked all the guests for their attendance and gave a chieftaincy title of Danmazani of Ilorin to the Durbar Committee Chairman, Engr Suleiman Yahaya Alapansanpa, FNSE.

  • Buratai charges troops on loyalty, sacrifice

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, has tasked troops of Nigerian Army in Maiduguri to ensure that loyalty, obedience and sacrifice, were constantly observed in their operational conducts.

Buratai made the call during a visit to the 7 Division Medical Services and Hospital, Maiduguri to celebrate Eid-el-Kabir with the wounded troops at the hospital.

He was represented by the Army Chief of Training and Operation, Maj.-Gen. Enobong Udoh, at the occasion.

“We must continue to subordinate ourselves and act professionally in support of civil authorities whenever we are called upon to do so.

“That is a veritable way to justify the confidence which Nigerians repose in the Nigerian Army and ensure continued support for the Service.

“We must bear in mind that obedience to lawful orders is a hallmark of discipline and discipline remains the bedrock of the military.

“Therefore, discipline and courage must remain our watchwords in our personal conduct as well as during operations, as we seek to defeat the remnants of ISWAP threats in the Northeast and security challenges in other parts of our country,’’ he said.

The army chief said that the army had lived up to expectations and remained ahead of the threats bedeviling the country in spite of some daunting challenges.

He added that its commitment to the collective peace and security as well as the stability of Nigeria remained resolute and unshaken.

Buratai said: “Eid-el-Kabir festival holds special place for us as individuals and collectively as an army.

“It provides a unique opportunity for us to reflect and redouble our efforts towards fulfilling our roles and justifying the confidence reposed in us by Nigerians.

“This is further amplified by the support and cooperation the Nigerian Army receives from President Muhammadu Buhari.

“I must say that so far, we have performed creditably well and I commend all your efforts, though a lot still needs to be done especially in the face of emerging contemporary security challenges,’’ he added.

The Theatre Commander, Operation Lafiya Dole, Maj.-Gen. Benson Akinroloye, said that the occasion was a pointer to the fact that the army authourities cared about the recuperating officers and soldiers in the hospital.

Akinroloye said that the celebration would also ginger the officers to recover fast and rejoin their colleagues in the fight against the Boko Haram in the North East.

He enjoined them to be strong, adding that their continuous commitment and courage would assist the army to win the war soon.

The theatre commander commended Buratai for his support for the troops and officers at the war front to continue to fight on and win the war.

Similarly, the General Officer Commanding 7 Division, Maj.-Gen. Bulama Biu, said that the division had on Sunday feasted with the troops at the battle field at the Mulei super camp.

Biu said that the army authorities decided to celebrate the 2019 Eid-el-Kabir with both the troops in the theatre of operations and those in the hospital in order to encourage them to recuperate fast.

One of the wounded officers at the hospital, Maj. Yakubu Katuka, thanked the Chief of Army Staff for his love and care for the troops by ensuring that they celebrated sallah like others.

Katuka said that the privilege of being served with food by a superior officer was a rare opportunity for the soldiers and other junior officers.

He also commended the hospital for the care being given to the wounded and sick officers in ensuring that they were fit in order to return to their duty posts.

  • Presidency keeps mum over alleged deployment of Ita Enang

The Presidency on Monday declined to comment on the media report alleging that the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on National Assembly (Senate), Senator Ita Enang, has been relieved of his appointment.

Until the latest report, Enang, like several other aides of the President, has continued with his appointment in the second term of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration without renewal.

Senator Babajide Omoworare, a former Senator from Osun state, is claimed to have replaced Enang as Presidential aide to the Senate.

It was also claimed that Enang has been redeployed to a ministry as SSA to the President.

But no government official was willing to confirm the latest media report as at the time of filing this report on Monday night.

When contacted on Monday, the Senior Special Assistant on media and publicity to the President, Mallam Garba Shehu said the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha was in a better position to speak on the matter.

“SGF is in a better position to speak on that,” he stated.

Also several calls put through to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, on Monday were not picked.

There was also no return call from the SGF as at press time.

  • Obaseki visits Oshiomhole in Auchi

Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki on Monday paid a surprise visit to his predecessor and National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Comrade Adams Oshiomole.

He was in the Iyamho country home of the former President of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to pay him homage for the  Eid-el-Kabir celebration.

Obaseki visited Oshiomhole and his mother, Hajia Aishetu Oshiomole, despite the rumoured rift between them over the governor’s re-election bid.

The governor expressed his delight at the incredible support he received from the Muslim community and reiterated his commitment to the transformation of Edo State.

The Otaru of Auchi commended the governor for his uncommon leadership and advised him not to succumb to the forces of darkness preaching division in Edo State.

He encouraged the Governor to remain prayerful and continue to strive in the interest of the people.

Speaking after the visit, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Communications, Mr. Crusoe Osagie, congratulated the Muslim community.

He lauded Obaseki for his demonstration of exemplary leadership.

He suggested that the visit would likely unnerve a tiny fraction of the people of the state.

“The notion that these two men are adversaries is being propagated by morally and financially insolvent people seeking to profit off of the challenges they have been working so hard to foment.

“You cannot blame such people really. Their talents and abilities are severely limited, so it is in their collective interest to stoke tension and drive division, but I can tell you that they have already failed.

“It is not in their interests for Edo State to peacefully progress, so they will try to mis-categorise this visit. This is what they’ve always done and it’s their stock in trade.

“True leaders understand that they represent the people in whose interests they must serve.

“This is why His Excellency has always said that the resources of the state, are for the people only, and not for a negligible minority and nothing can ever change this,” he stated.

On whether this means that a new proclamation of the House of Assembly will be issued by the Governor in conformity with the directives of the National Assembly, Osagie was non-committal.

He said: “I cannot speak on this matter as it is sub-judice. But I think the whole world knows that the Edo State House of Assembly has already been inaugurated.

“No person or institution of Government can order a state governor to do anything. We are a nation of Laws and by the special grace of God, will all be alive to witness the law run its full course,” he stated.

  • Solidaridad partners Kogi on palm oil production

Kogi State Government is partnering with Solidaridad, a global non-governmental organisation (NGO) to improve oil palm production and the livelihood of smallholder oil palm farmers in the state.

The project is aimed at building farmer’s capacity to implement best management practices, intensification and rehabilitation efforts.

In a statement, Solidaridad said the project would teach the farmers sustainable climate-smart practices for increased productivity.

The NGO will also introduce innovation for improved downstream processing to increase palm oil extraction rate and quality, create a competitive oil palm sector through policy and institutional dialogue and influencing, and improve access to finance, inputs and markets for oil palm smallholder farmers and SMEs.

The government recently showed its commitment to the laudable initiatives of the company through an intent letter expressing its readiness to partner with Solidaridad in its capacity building initiatives of smallholder farmers in the state.

According to Senior Climate Specialist for Africa Solidaridad, Samuel Ogallah, the intent letter from the state shows the willingness of the governor to revitalise agricultural practices in the state for the benefit of the people.

To him, the state stands to benefit from the expertise of Solidaridad in the area of climate-friendly agriculture, which the NGO has demonstrated around the world in the last 50 years of its existence.

“The capacity of farmers will be enhanced through increased productivity and better livelihood, the project will build adaptive capacity and resilience to the impact of climate change, and with the adoption of climate-smart technology, the emission of Green House Gas, (GHG), will be reduced in their practices both at the farm and milling level,” he said.

Oil Palm Programme Manager SWA Nigeria, Kenechukwu Onukwube, the recent buy-in of Solidaridad’s NISCOPS programme by the government is the right step towards revitalisation of the oil palm sector, as the state is vital in the production of the commodity in the country.

According to him, the initiatives of Solidaridad are important because “Kogi is one of the states in Nigeria with rich oil palm belt”.

Onukwube praised the government of Kogi for being the first among other states like Enugu, Cross River and Akwa Ibom to express interest and commitment through an official letter to Solidaridad.

He noted that NI-SCOPS’ objectives align with the state’s ‘New Direction Blueprint Agenda for the Agricultural Sector.’

Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture Idenyi Emmanuel suggested that Solidaridad should look inwards to other commodities such as cotton, cassava, cashew, soya beans, as well as minerals like gold, iron ore, coal, which are in abundance in the state.
