Adjogbe further stressed the need to inculcate the right attitude and values in the youths, stating that it was necessary to recalibrate our value system and get people to begin to differentiate between good and bad, adding that it would once again make the Niger Delta friendly to investors.

He said: “It is important for us to begin to woo investors back to the Niger Delta, to drive sustainable development, which will ultimately improve the quality of life of our people.”

The acting EDP also stated that much as the next level agenda of the Federal Government was promising, it would not achieve the desired goals in an atmosphere of insecurity, noting that as one of the national patrons of the Buhari Support Group, he joined in the effort to preach peace in all parts of the country.

He said: “I have been an ardent follower of President Muhammadu Buhari right from when he was the military Head of State in the 1980s. I still remember the War Against Indiscipline (WAI), which ingrained the queuing culture into the consciousness of Nigerians.

“I am happy that Nigerians have given President Buhari another opportunity to instill discipline in our country in a democratic milieu.”

President of the Northern Youth Council of Nigeria, Dr Isah Abubakar, noted that Adjogbe was one of the few Federal Government appointees that distinguished themselves in service, pointing out that the group recognised his exceptional performance and commitment to the next level agenda of the Buhari administration.

He said the NYCN was impressed by the fact that the NDDC’s acting EDP had mentored many youths and prepared them for leadership positions.

Abubakar said: “We, therefore, recognize you as an icon of human transformation who has shown exemplary leadership in the area of agriculture, infrastructure, youth empowerment and encouraging youths to participate in leadership.”

The NYCN President also urged NDDC to help nurture the newly-established North East Development Commission, noting that the Niger Delta interventionist agency had come a long way and its experiences over the years could help other new bodies to take their own bearing.

  • Eid-el-Kabir: Commuters lament shortage of commercial vehicles in FCT

As Muslims celebrate Eid-el-Kabir, commuters in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) were left stranded at some bus-stops as shortage of intra city vehicles hit Abuja metropolis.

Some of the bus-stops include: Apo Roundabout, Berger junction, Jabi Motor Park, Dutse Junction.

At Apo-Roundabout, Mr Friday Mungu said that he had waited at the junction for over an hour waiting to board a vehicle to Mararaba area of Nasarawa State.

According to another stranded commuter, Kolawole Olaoluwalonje, the major reason for the scarcity was due to rain and sallah celebration.

”It is like commercial drivers had decided not to operate,” he said.

Mrs Halima Hussaini expressed disatisfaction because of the hardship created by the absence of commercial vehicles on the road.

She said that she had waited at Dutse junction for close to 30 minutes just to board a vehicle to visit her Muslim friends at Gwarimpa estate.

She had wondered if all the Commercial drivers were Muslims.

“ I thought we had a combination of Muslims and Christians as Taxi drivers but because today is sallah, there is scarcity of vehicles coupled with the fact that Christians go to church,” she said.

Mr Prosper Kelani, a member of National Union of Road Traffic Workers (NURTW), said that it was expected for commuters to experience shortage of commercial vehicles because sallah was an opportunity for most to rest.

Kelani advised commuters to exercise patience with drivers as the scarcity was only for a short period and would be over once the celebration was over.

  • Five reasons you should celebrate your birthdays

    Adeyinka Akintunde

It is argued that the most important day in a person’s life is his or her birthday. This is because it is historic particularly as it marks the beginning of one’s sojourn on earth.

Sadly, there are people who do not celebrate their birthdays. Some do not even remember the day, and for those who remember, they just let it pass like a normal day, doing nothing special, either for themselves or for other people around them, to mark  their special day.

A birthday is a day that comes once a year and it should be celebrated for several reasons. Here are five reasons you should celebrate your birthdays.

It is a time to be thankful

Your birthday is a time to celebrate birth itself. It is an expression of thanksgiving to God for being born and still being alive. You are not better than those that are dead. It is also an occasion to rethink your life. It is a great time to reflect on the past, evaluate your present and make plans for your future.

It is a time of new mercies

To reach another year is an achievement. Another opportunity of blessings is open to you, as you begin a new year. It is a time to reflect on how much love and kindness you have enjoyed from God in the past year. Think of how many nights God allowed you to lie down and sleep and how many mornings He has awakened you with brand new mercies.

It is a time to bond with people

Your birthday is a good opportunity to bond with people, your family and your friends. Usually people make a special effort to be nice to you on your birthday. Birthday presents are good, but a wish that comes from the heart is worth all the presents in this world from those who truly love you.

It is a time to be celebrated

It is a “mini-judgement day”, a day your records are usually counted, but this time, only your uniqueness and the positives are celebrated. If you have influenced people, you have touched a life, your good deeds are usually recalled and celebrated. That is why people go extra miles to organize surprise parties for people, buy gifts (some with their last penny), send messages and wishes, all to celebrate the goodness of the one celebrating his/her birthday.

It is a time to take up new responsibilities

You are a year older on your birthday, and so, life will throw new challenges at you which you should accept. Your birthday is a reminder to be more responsible, and accept more challenges of life.

People celebrate their birthdays in diverse ways, some throw a party, and some do a small celebration amongst two or more people. But the most important thing is that it is marked and celebrated.

It is important to note that you are important. Your existence on earth is important; to you, your loved ones and strangers you haven’t yet met. You deserve to be celebrated.

Do not hide your day. Celebrate it, because you deserve it.
