  • Zamfara fires Emir, district head over links to banditry

The Zamfara State Government on Saturday sealed the fate of the suspended Emir of Maru, Alhaji Abubakar Cika Ibrahim and the district head of Kanoma, Alhaji Ahmed Kanoma, by sacking them from office.

The duo had been suspended for allegedly being part of armed banditry in their respective domains on the strength of an investigation by a committee set up by the state government to investigate the allegations levelled against them.

The committee recommended that they be stripped of their positions after claiming that they were culpable.

Deputy Governor Mahdi Aliyu Gusau said the two traditional rulers were found wanting.

Consequently, the state government decided to remove them to serve as a deterrent to others.

Ibrahim and Kanoma had been manhandled by their subjects last month at Kanoma town, while the residents also called for their removal when Governor Matawalle paid a condolence visit to the families of 32 persons killed by the bandits.

Over 150 Nigerians are believed to have been killed in South Africa over the years, the most prominent being the suspected strangulation of the Deputy Director-General of the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria (CIIN), Mrs. Ndibuisi-Chukwu, in June.

The Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria (CIIN) is the premier professional body in Nigeria.

Mrs. Ndibuisi-Chukwu was on a business delegation to South Africa when she was found dead in her room at Emperor’s Palace Hotel and Convention Centre a few hours before  her return home.

Autopsy report attributed her death to ‘unnatural cause.”

The report sparked an uproar at home with the Senate asking  the South African government to investigate her  death and those of other Nigerians in that country

The Senate also urged the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to issue travel alerts to Nigerians travelling to South Africa.

Senate Minority Leader, Enyinnaya Abaribe, who led the debate said earlier reports that she died of cardiac arrest had been countered by  the autopsy report released on June 20 by the South African Department of Home Affairs which indicated that the death was unnatural and suspected to be murder.

“In a curious twist, the hotel allegedly was reluctant to cooperate with the law enforcement agencies to unravel the circumstances surrounding her death. This is not the first time Nigerians have died in suspicious circumstances in South Africa,” he said.

Another Nigerian – Benjamin Simeon- was killed  in South Africa penultimate week.

Forty-three year old Simeon hailed from Okposi, Ebonyi State.

The Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa said the Taxi driver  was  shot by yet to be identified gunmen in the early hours of  Saturday, August  3 in Johannesburg.

The spokesperson for the association, Mr.  Sunny-Wenike Douglas, said the victim was killed moment  after dropping off his clients in a part of the city.

Douglas added that an investigating officer with the South Africa Police Service confirmed that a case of murder had been opened on the matter.

He vowed that his association would follow up with the case to ensure that the killers were arrested and brought to justice.

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has felicitated with Muslims across the country on the celebration of the 2019 Eid-el-Kabir festival.

This was contained in a statement issued by his Director, Media and Public Affairs, Mr Moses Olafare, and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Ile-Ife.

  • Meet Otto Canon, Nigeria’s climate activist making efforts to save tomorrow

It took all the resolve Otto Canon could muster not to charge at the driver of the rickety bus in Kaiama, an Ijaw community Bayelsa State. It was a Thursday morning in December, 2015.

He had just completed his National Youth Service orientation course and was heading for a photo shoot in Yenagoa, when he ran into the driver emptying a sack of solid waste into a median on East-West Road.

“If I had my way that morning,” Otto Canon fumed, “I would arrest him, charge him to court even. I was wondering how a sane human being would open their eyes and dispose such waste on the expressway, without a care,” he told this reporter.

More than six years after that incident, that anger still rages on, like tidal waves sweeping across the face of the sea. But, unlike in 2015 where he nearly threw punches at the man whom he considered a threat to the environment, the 2014 Gulder Ultimate Search winner is channeling that energy at policy roundtables, climate chat groups, community forums and sustainability platforms advocating new approaches to securing the environment.

    In the beginning was anger

In a larger sense, Otto Canon’s anger is justifiable. About 68% of the most extreme weather conditions within the last 20 years were made more severe by human-induced climate change, according to a study by Carbon Brief, a UK-based platform that covers development in climate science.

But not many Nigerians are abreast of these realties. If they do, the data is nothing more than some vanity statistics; something they have heard so much so that it loses its ability to inspire action. “For some people, climate change sounds like some fantasy tale, something alien. But it’s not. It’s like day and night. Climate change is here and now, and every day, we are reminded that there’s no hiding place if we don’t stem its tide,” he says.

Global reports on pollution alone place Nigeria in a frightening portion of the scale, with a myriad of diseases, floods and other environmental disasters as testament. But Otto Canon believes Nigerians need to adopt a new approach to the environment, prioritizing personal responsibility over expectations from government.

With some of the worst deforestation indices in the world, Nigeria loses about 450 to 600 hectares of its forests annually and makes desertification a battle far from being won. Otto recounted an encounter during his statutory national service where a paramount ruler in Bayelsa boasted that his state generates the largest amount of wood in Nigeria.

That statement, Otto recalled, left him furious and dumbfounded at the same time. “I was surprised because he did not mention a single effort to replace the trees or an awareness of the negative impact of that activity. To him, tree felling was a big achievement for the state. That incident reignited my passion to make an impact in that space.”

Ever since, Otto has leveraged his fame as winner of one of Nigeria’s biggest reality shows to lead campaigns that support conservation and climate action.

Enters Port Harcourt Tree Planting Festival

The impact of climate change presents some of the darkest hours in human history, and Nigeria is not insulated. Yet, poor environmental practices, like those of the driver at East-West Road and millions of Nigerians, are stifling modest efforts to conserve our space.

In 2018, Otto, along with 500 volunteers, launched the annual Port Harcourt Tree Planting Festival to drive mass action and mitigate climate change. At the maiden edition of the festival, about 1000 trees of various species were planted in strategic spots across the city. “The port Harcourt tree planting festival is a social Project organized by CleanCyclers in a bid to curb the effect of climate change and global warming and also restore the garden city of Nigeria,” he said.

He expressed concern that Port Harcourt, a Nigerian garden city once renowned for its greenery, has lost its glory owing to harmful environmental practices.

In 2018, the state governor, Nyesom Wike, said his administration was working hard to restore its Garden City status. To achieve that feat, the state is counting on the support of partners like CleanCyclers, a platform founded by Otto Canon only two years ago.

Through the platform, Otto Canon has worked with various partners to design and implement projects, especially in Nigeria’s oil-rich Niger Delta region with a history of pollution, that promote afforestation, clean climate and zero waste.

    ‘It’s environment or nothing’

Otto Canon’s foray into environmental activism appears predestined. “I was born into an amazing family where the father is a big lover of greeneries,” he says. That obviously rubbed off on the young man who was recently recognized by Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari and the Rivers State Government for his efforts at conserving the environment.

“I’m concerned about the attitude of our people to the environment. I have had people tell me to slow down, and that I can’t change the world. Yes, I’m not sure I can change the world, but I certainly can make an impact on the environment. And that has to happen now,” Otto Canon explains.

Otto’s efforts echo the global ambition by the United Nations under Goals 11, 13, 14 and 15 of its Sustainable Development Goals – from building sustainable cities to combating climate change, desertification, and promote blue economy.

If there’s anything that is more urgent today, according to Otto, it is adopting a new, sustainable approach to how people see or relate with the environment; a system that frowns at the driver on East-West Road from polluting the environment. The government can’t do it alone.

  • Students shutdown South Africa’s Shoprite in Ogun over Xenophobia

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) on Saturday shut down South Africa’s grocery chain, Shoprite at Ota in Ogun State.

A News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent in Ota reports that the students picketed the shopping mall to protest what they described as unrestrained xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.

Scores of young Nigerians residing in South Africa have been brought home in body bags in recent years, having been killed in apparent xenophobic attacks in the former apartheid nation.

The Shoprite mall was shut down around 11:10 a.m. in the presence of policemen with shoppers horridly ordered out of the mall.

The students carried placards with inscriptions: “South Africans must go. Enough of the killing of our brothers, sisters, and relatives in South Africa. You can’t continue to kill our people and still feed fat on us.’’

Speaking with reporters, the National Public Relations Officer of NANS, Mr. Azeez Adeyemi, said that “NANS’ leadership under its President, Mr Danielson Bamidele, have resolved to champion the struggle of putting sense back into lawless South Africans.

“It seems the government of South Africa derives pleasure from the senseless killings and sees the continuous xenophobic attacks on Nigerians residents in South Africa as a norm.

“NANS’ struggle against xenophobia has moved beyond ordinary street protests.

“Our target now is to mobilise Nigerian students and Nigerians towards truncating the smooth running of South African businesses in Nigeria.

“We shall resume here at Shoprite, Stanbic IBTC, MTN and Multichoice on Aug. 14 for a total shut down.

“This is a struggle that will continue until the victory of purpose is achieved,” Adeyemi said.

On Aug. 5, students shut down MTN and Stanbic IBTC Bank offices in Abeokuta to voice their anger of the relentless killing of Nigerians in South African cities.

Up to 800,000 Nigerians, mainly young people reside in South Africa, according to unofficial estimates.

No fewer than 128 Nigerians have been killed in the country since 2016, many of them murdered by South African policemen.

However, some of the Nigerians were reportedly killed by their fellow Nigerians in gang violence, linked to hard drug peddling. (NAN)
