  • Lagos shuts 52 illegal, substandard pharmacies

Lagos State Task Force on Counterfeit, Fake Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Foods has shut 52 pharmacies, patent medicine shops and unlicensed premises.

They were shut for operating illegally and beyond their scope, Permanent Secretary (PS), Ministry of Health Dr. Titilayo Gonclaves said yesterday.

The raids were carried out at Isolo, Egbeda, Ikotun, Bariga and Somolu.

Receiving the task force’s report, Govcalves said the outlets operated without licence, engaged unqualified workers, sold unethical products and displayed expired drugs in an unconducive environment.

“Although some of the pharmacies visited were registered, it is disheartening that quite a number of them had no qualified pharmacists on duty and displayed expired drugs for sale to the public,” Goncalves said.

She added that they engaged in illegal clinical practices such as patient admission and setting of intravenous infusions.

Such practice, the PS said, was unacceptable, adding that the government will enforce the law and sanction erring operators.

Director, Pharmaceutical Services, Dr. Moyosore Adejumo, said the government would stop the dangers posed by the outlets.

He was reported to have expressed satisfaction that the protests went ahead despite his arrest and detention.

“I am pleased that the peaceful protests went ahead. However, knowledge of the sheer number of innocent Nigerians being arrested for exercising their civil rights bothers me,” Sowore’s online newspaper Sahara reporters quoted him as saying when his supporters visited him.

The online newspaper reported: “During the visit by members of the “Take it back movement” to the DSS facility he is being held, Sowore, who had refused to eat meals given to him all along by the secret police, thanked Nigerians and the international community for their support, assuring everyone that he was in good health and has so far been treated fairly in detention.”

The statement said: “At 6pm today, 5th August, 2019, members of the Take it back movement were allowed to visit with our convener, Omoyele Sowore, for the first time since last Saturday.

“We met him in high spirits, unmoved by the events of the last few days. The officers allowed us to present him with food as Sowore had refused all meals since his capture.  We are also happy to confirm that Take it Back members will be allowed to bring him food daily as per his wishes.

“The freedom fighter was quick to ask about the movement and supporters as he is aware that there will be a lot of worry about his wellbeing.

“Indeed, the silver lining in today’s (Monday) unrest lies in the knowledge that truly, you cannot stop an idea whose time has come.

“The take it back movement will continue to agitate for his release as well as that of comrades whose voices this oppressive regime has tried to silence.

“This visit was a small win; but we will not rest until we are free and free indeed.”

  • EFCC secures order to freeze N9.9b in three accounts linked to Ambode’s Perm Sec

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has secured a court order freezing N9.9billion in three accounts linked to a Permanent Secretary who worked with ex-Governor Akinwumi Ambode of Lagos State.

It said only about N300 million was left in the said accounts.

It claimed that the accounts were uncovered in First City Monument Bank (FCMB) 5617984012;  Access Bank (0060949275) and Zenith Bank  1011691254, respectively.

A statement by the Head of Media and Publicity of EFCC, Mr. Tony Orilade said the freezing followed an ex parte application it filed before a Federal High Court in Lagos.

It said a suspect, Adewale Adesanya, the Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Chief of Staff to the ex-governor was under probe over the strange accounts.

The statement said: “Justice Chuka Obiozor of the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos, on Tuesday, August 6, 2019, ordered the freezing of the sum of three accounts belonging to the Lagos State government over alleged N9.9 billion fraud.

“Only about N300 million are now left in the three accounts.

“The funds are domiciled in First City Monument Bank, FCMB, account number 5617984012; Access Bank account number 0060949275 and Zenith Bank account number 1011691254, respectively.

“Justice Obiozor gave the order, following an ex-parte application filed by the  EFCC.

“The EFCC had prayed the court to freeze the account pending the conclusion of investigation and possible prosecution of Adewale Adesanya, the Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Chief of Staff to former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode.

“The applicant, EFCC, in an affidavit deposed to by Kungmi Daniel, an operative of the Commission, stated that there was “a huge inflow of N9,927,714,443.29” from the state accounts into an FCMB bank account opened on September 17, 2018 during the administration of the immediate past  governor of the state, Akinwunmi Ambode, and operated by Adesanya.

“It was further stated that the schedule of the FCMB account showed how Adesanya and other signatories to the account made fraudulent transfer from the accounts of the Lagos State Government and dissipated the funds housed in the said accounts.

“In his submission, counsel to the EFCC, Mohammed Abbas, said “The trend in the account is that the account always witnessed huge inflow from Lagos State Government in the above scheduled accounts managed by the respondent (Adesanya)”.

“Abbas, therefore, prayed the court to grant an order to temporarily attach and take over the accounts to enable it conclude its investigations.

“There have been concerted efforts and attempts to dissipate the contents of the accounts listed in the schedule to this application.

“Without freezing the nominated accounts and temporarily forfeiting the money to the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, there is no way the fraud being perpetrated using the scheduled accounts can be stopped,” he further told the court.

“Consequently, Justice Obiozor granted the prayers of the counsel to the Commission.

The Judge adjourned further proceedings to September 9, 2019.

  • IHF World Youth tourney: Nigeria loses to Bahrain

Nigeria U19 boys’ team lost to Bahrain 36-28 in their debut at the IHF Youth World Championship Skopje, North Macedonia despite putting up a spirited performance in the game on Tuesday.

Despite an eight-goal loss against Bahrain, they had plenty of positives to take from their first match at this level. Bahrain did enough throughout the 60 minutes but will face tougher challenges ahead as Group C.

Faruk Yusuf will go down in NigBoris Trajkovski Arena, Skopjeerian handball history as their first-ever player to score in an IHF men’s or women’s youth world championship, but his side will have to wait for their first point, or win, after a defeat against the Asian continental youth champions, Bahrain.

Bahrain were never behind in the whole match as Nigeria, with just 14 squad players, kept in touch with just a two-goal deficit for nearly 40 minutes, but the fourth-placed African continental youth side could fell off in the last third of the match as Bahrain comfortably took the two points, leading by 10 in the final moments (35:25) before two late Nigerian goals made the scoreline a little bit more respectable.

Even up to a few minutes before the half-time break, Bahrain were not completely clear of their opponents as Nigeria, led by their captain, the diminutive Ibrahim Dikko, constantly breathed down their necks, but consistent goals from Mohamed Mohamed, who ended with 13 in the match, ensured his side would see out the first half in front.

Nigeria coach Emeka Joseph Nnanami called his first team time out at 7:5 down just short of the quarter hour mark but it only inspired their opponents, who came out of the break fired up and went further up, 9:5 moments later

With just seconds remaining, the influential Dikko fell awkwardly on his should and had to be treated well after the final buzzer with Nnanami sure to be pleased his side have a rest day tomorrow before facing host nation North Macedonia on Thursday (8 August).

“I am not satisfied with this match,” said Nnanami to wch2019championship.com.mk. “We played bad in attack, plus they are good team; however it’s our first match and I am sure that we’ll do better.”

“It’s good when you win a match, but I am not satisfied with this performance,” said Bahrain’s Johan Halldor. “We conceded 28 goals and that’s too much, but the first match of the tournament is always difficult.”

  • Insecurity: Bishops give Fed Govt wake-up call

Catholic bishops joined on Tuesday the popular call for the Federal Government to tackle the insecurity that has taken many lives and property.

The clerics believe the government is not doing enough to stop kidnapping, killings and other crimes afflicting the country.

According to them, it is sad that the government has not designed ways to tame those perpetrating heinous crimes.

To the clerics, what they described as the government’s laxity, is not solving the hydra-headed problems but creating panic among Nigerians.

The bishops issued a communique signed by the Archbishop of Ibadan and the President of the Nigeria Catholic Conference, Ibadan Ecclesiastical Province, Gabriel Abegunrin.

They met on Tuesday at the Pope John Paul II Pastoral Centre in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, where, besides insecurity, other matters, such as the suggestion that churches be licensed, were discussed.

The clerics called on governments in West Africa to invest more in youth development to reduce illegal immigration, prostitution, kidnapping and other social problems.

The communique reads: “When this insecurity started, it was one corner of the country, but now it has gone round the geopolitical zones, what is government doing? If there is no security, there is no reason for government to exist.

“It is unfortunate that Nigerians wake up each day to lament woeful news of killings, lynching, kidnapping and brigandage. Many people, including priests, have fallen victims to this tragically insecure environment.

“The lack of clear pattern of punishing crimes and lip service commitment to the protection of lives and property on the part of the Federal Government and security agencies have made many Nigerians to be living in fear day to day.

“There seems to be no end in sight, especially with allegations of killings by herdsmen being left unattended to. Time is running out for Nigeria if the security is not improved. We call on governments, traditional and other civiI authorities, to please save our country.”

On alleged self-abduction and jailing of priests for rape, the bishops described the developments as   manifestations of societal rot  and loss of family values, saying all the citizens must share the blame.

They said: “It is sad that we are losing our core family values. We must take care of our children and imbibe the culture of being our brother’s keepers like we had before, because what is happening today has to do with our background.

“We know the economic situation calls for us to overwork ourselves, but parents must look for time to take care of their children. This is the only way we can rid our society of evils and have a brighter future.”

The bishops commended governments on their improved commitments to the payment of workers’ salaries and pensions.

On government’s directive through the Ministry of Interior to license places of worship for celebration of marriages and issuing of marriage certificates, the bishops said such a proposal needed to be approached with caution and should be given a second thought, especially as it concerns imposition of annual levies on these institutions.

The communique reads: “Contemporary circumstances in Nigeria demand that government must approach religious matters with utmost caution so as not to be considered partisan and partial on national issues.”

The bishops warned the Federal Government against taking steps that could tinker with the freedom of the press, saying media should not be gagged under any guise.

“Only courageous pressmen can now come out boldly to talk. But must all work hard and remove whatever that is working against the freedom of the press. The government must give the press that full freedom for them to be able to speak truth to power.”

“As you are being inaugurated, please if you see anything tell me, if you would not tell me, tell them (ICPC) so that they can send their people to come and harass us.
