No promotion scandal in Nigerian Police Force — IGP

The Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Mr Olukayode Egbetokun, said the Nigeria Police Force had no promotion scandal but a system that rewards diligence, professionalism, and proven capacity.

Egbetokun said this on Tuesday in Abuja during the decoration ceremony of newly promoted police officers.

He said the force would not be swayed by those who trade in falsehoods or seek to undermine the integrity of the Nigeria Police Force.

According to him, our commitment to fairness and merit remains unwavering as promotions in the force will remain guided, solely by competence, performance, and discipline.

“There is no place for trepidation, nepotism, or clever sentiment. This remains the cornerstone of our career management philosophy because it motivates excellence, strengthens morale, and renews public trust,” he said.

Egbetokun said the decoration ceremony was not just for advancement in rank, but the affirmation of excellence, character, and distinguished service within the Nigeria Police Force.

“We mark not just promotion, but the reaffirmation of competence, trust, and integrity.

“This ceremony embodies the strength of our institutions, the fairness of our processes, and the courage of those who have served faithfully through the years.

“To our newly elevated officer, I extend my heartfelt congratulations. Your elevation is a product of dedication, consistency, and unwavering commitment to the values of discipline, integrity, and patriotism.

“Advancement in rank brings with it a new horizon of duty. The higher we rise, the deeper our responsibility to serve with wisdom, strength, and courage,” he said.

The I-G enjoined the senior officers to uphold the highest ethical standards and redefine policing in the discharge of their duties.

According to him, the landscape of crime is evolving, driven by technology, complexity, and global trends.

  • Police caution against jungle justice

    Police caution against jungle justice

    …urges Nigerians to embrace investigation

The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) on Sunday, October 20, condemned what it described as dangerous and abhorrent trend of jungle justice.

The police cautioned the general public on the consequences of such on the criminal justice administration, rule of law and the global reputation of Nigeria.

The development is in view of the recent spate of jungle justice in some parts of the country.

The Police said jungle justice, a deplorable and savage behaviour, has led to the tragic loss of lives and destruction of property across the country.

This inhuman act, the police said is a betrayal of justice and due process, which undermines the rule of law, fundamental principles and ideals of human rights, and justice.

According to a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi: “In the same instance, the Police specifically condemns the act of arson which led to the death by burning of some suspects in police custody, and the subsequent setting ablaze of police barracks, patrol vans and the Divisional Police Station in Agenebode, Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State on Sunday, 13th of October 2024.

“In the above case, members of the public alleged that the police were trying to pervert justice by taking into custody some suspected kidnappers and armed robbers who have been accused of terrorizing the people of the community in Edo State. The main suspect was arrested and almost lynched by the community members before he was rescued by the police. His arrest led the police to arrest 3 additional suspects.

“The rescue and detention of the suspects didn’t go down well with the community members who later mobilized in large numbers and attacked the police station, killed the suspects by burning, and scorched down the station and properties therein.

“The erroneous perception of the community members that the police would set free the suspects was absolutely wrong and quite unfair, as the police never intended to pervert justice in the case, more so that they have through painstaking investigation arrested 3 other suspects fingered in the criminal act.

“In another development, a police team trying to prevent the execution of jungle justice was gruesomely attacked which led to the killing of a police officer, ASP Augustine Osupayi, attached to the Lagos State Command, by a group of violent mob on Saturday, 19th of October 2024, in Agege, Lagos State. The police team had raced down to the rescue of a driver who was alleged to have accidentally knocked down a motorcycle rider to death”.

The group of motorcycle riders, Adejobi said pounced, on the driver, who was eventually rescued by the police.

He said the rescue didn’t go down well with the riders who descended on the police team and unfortunately killed the ASP instantly.

“These are very few cases out of many incidences recorded across the country.

“The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM., sympathizes with the families of the departed souls, and directs the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) to investigate these incidents, and bring all persons found wanting to face the full wrath of the law.

“While the Nigeria Police Force remains resolute in upholding the principles of rule of law, members of the public are urged to shun acts of jungle justice, and destruction emphasizing that it serves only to destabilize the foundation of legal authority and public safety. It is criminal, illogical, and unjustifiable, irrespective of the grievances held by the perpetrators”, he added.

“Biafrans are equally today showcasing to the world that we are ready to boycott every Nigerian elections come 2019 especially presidential election next year.

“Our march today on the roads and streets across Biafraland must send signals to politicians and saboteurs among us that Biafrans are determined to leave the prison called Nigeria where British government experimented to lead black Africans and other black nations across the globe but failed to live up to the expectations for over 100 years because of the Hausa Fulani caliphate dominations.

“IPOB rally and march today being 23rd November, 2018 is ongoing in all the states across Biafraland like Rivers, Enugu, Abia, Anambra, Delta, Imo, Ebonyi, Cross Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa and other Biafra clans and tribes fraudulently caved into Kogi, Benue and Edo States, the unrelented efforts by IPOB family worldwide to restore Biafra sovereignty must continue unless Nigeria Government and it’s handlers give us date for Biafra referendum to ascertain whether our people wants to continue stay in Nigeria or not.

“We are much aware that some unscrupulous individuals and groups including those Biafran stocks who work with Nigeria Government and those who prefer to be slaves in their own fathers land to the detriment of Biafra restoration project.

“IPOB is divinely ordained restore Biafra sovereignty out of this enclave called Nigeria. We are coming to show Nigerians and its handlers including their security apparatus what is called civil disobedience because IPOB is more of intellectuals than daft.”

  • NMPC urges Buhari to restructure Nigerian Police

Following the spate of killings and security breaches across the country, a non-governmental organisation, primarily committed to positive change in Nigeria, the National Movement for Positive Change (NMPC), has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to as a matter of urgency restructure the Nigerian Police Force in order to really check crime and provide adequate security for lives and property of the people.

NMPC in a statement issued after its stakeholders deliberations on the recent  killings in the country also called for a well funded police, in line with modern and international practices capable of tackling modern security challenges.

The stakeholders also explored and exposed the nitty gritty of the psychological problems confronting the security operatives in the country, particularly the police.

The statement reads: “The police should be restructured with strict guidelines for promotion and deployment and be well funded. The office of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) should not be by political appointment as it is currently done.

“The office of the IGP should also have a fixed term and this will make the force independent  and outside the control of the executive. The policy of interstate transfer of serving police officers with children in schools should be stopped.

“There should be a waiver clause that will exempt police officers from transfer when they have children in schools. In the last six months, there has been some recruitment in the Nigerian Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS) to warrant increase in its budget.

“Early this year, the House of Representatives Committee on Police Affairs has said that the 2018 budget proposal of the Nigeria Police is inadequate and cannot cater for the myriad of security challenges facing the country.

“The panel chairman, Mr. Haliru Jika said in Abuja that the committee would be seeking an increase of the N332billion proposed in the budget for the police. The said budget proposal has to be reworked by the police in consultation with the Budget Office of the federation.

“A presentation by the police showed that in 2017, the Nigeria Police proposed N342billion for capital projects but only N20.19billion was appropriated out of which N9.09billion has been released so far.”
