    Petrol scarcity leaves Nigerians stranded

•Queues linger in Lagos, Abuja, major cities

Queues lengthened yesterday at petrol stations in some parts of Lagos State as motorists battled to fill their vehicle tanks.
Many residents, especially pupils, their parents, workers, and traders were caught in the web with fewer commercial buses on the roads.
Many bus stops were filled with hundreds of stranded passengers while roads hosting some filling stations that dispensed petrol witnessed gridlocks caused by desperate drivers.
The chaos along the roads was also witnessed inside the stations by residents trying to buy the product with jerry cans or gallons.
Commercial bus drivers who operated in the early hours of the day cashed in on the situation to raise fares by between 50 and 200 percent .
Like Lagos, there was no noticeable improvement in petrol supplies in states like Oyo, Osun, Edo, Kwara, Ebonyi, Niger, Plateau, Benue and Kaduna.
In Sokoto and Akwa Ibom states this were better than they were on Sunday. The Nigerian National Petrol Company Limited(NNPC) mega stations maintained a pump price of N620 per liter. Independent markers in Sokoto, however, sold for as much as N1,300 a litre.
Unfortunately, queues resurfaced yesterday in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) where the scarcity of petrol began about a week ago before it spread to Lagos.
NNPCL Chief Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye and Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) National President, Abubakar Maigandi on Sunday told The Nation that logistics problem that caused the scarcity had been resolved. They said that even though the lifting of petrol by marketers from deports had commenced, it would take a maximum of five days for normalcy to return.

They advised against panic buying, saying there was enough stock to meet demands.
Pupils whose schools reopened yesterday in Lagos, their parents, and traders said apart from spending hours at bus stops, they had to pay more for transportation. Some said they had to trek long distances to save cost.
A Junior Secondary School (JSS) pupil, Mukaila Jamiu, told The Nation that he spent more than two hours at a bus stop in Iyana Ipaja, a Lagos suburb, before getting to his school.
A parent, Shade Agboola, said that leaving her house in the morning to take her children to school and make her way to Lagos Island was hectic.
“When I got to the bus stop this morning (yesterday), the crowd I saw was huge” Agboola said.
A businessman, Mr Kingsley Udeh, also said he resorted to trekking a long distance to get to his shop.

    •Queues return to FCT
FCT residents who had a breather after almost a week of coping with scarcity were jolted yesterday morning with return of empty pumps at filling stations.
Most independent marketers did not dispense petrol but some NNPC stations and major marketers which did had long queues of vehicles stretching over 700 metres.
Price, however, remained N617 per litre but at black markets, it was between N720 and N1,000 a litre.
A driver that gave his name as Okey said he spent two hours at a station on the Olusegun Obasanjo Expressway before buying petrol.
“Nothing has changed about the scarcity. I spent over two hours in the queue before petrol was dispensed to me,” he told The Nation.
Besides, some major marketers, which were open to customers also did not hike their pump prices.
Like in Lagos, the scarcity did not only leave commuters stranded, it caused a hike in the cost of transportation.

    • Surveillance teams deployed in Osun, Kwara
In the two states, the The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) and the AbdulRahman AbdulRasaq-led administration warned against petrol hoarding by marketers and panic buying by residents.
The agency and Kwara state government said they had commenced monitoring of filling station to ensure that the product is not hoarded.
State Coordinator of the NMDPRA Adekunle Adeyemo and Governor AbdulRasaq’s Deputy Chief Press Secretary, Mashood Agboola made this known yesterday.
“The surveillance team of the agency is already out to ensure that those who have the product are dispensing it to motorists at reasonable price.
“However, any filling station caught hoarding the product with the view of inflicting pains on the masses will not be spared,’’ said Adeyemo.
Agboola, in his statement, explained that the deployment of the surveillance committee was a part of government’s measures to address scarcity in the state.
He said: “This is a committee set up by His Excellency AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to see to the problem of fuel shortage. As a responsible and responsive government, we cannot be folding our hands watching. We have to see that the majority of our people enjoy the dividends of democracy.”

*No respite in Oyo, Edo, seven others
Nine states were also not having a breather as of yesterday with most of the filling stations not dispensing petrol.
Like in Lagos and FCT, thousands of commuters were stranded at bus stops while business operators that rely on petrol, moaned over the scarcity.
In Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, commercial bus drivers and motorcycle riders took advantage of the situation to hike fares by 80 percent.
The few stations that sold at about N800 to N850 also had long queues that caused gridlocks in areas they are located.
A commercial driver plying Egbeda – Iwo Road axis told The Nation that he spent more than three hours at a filling station before he could make a purchase at an NNPC depot at N580 per litre
In Benin, the Edo State capital, motorists and commuters lamented the high cost of petrol and the amount of time they spent at the few independent stations that sold petrol. The marketers sold a litre for between N690 and N750.
Many commuters lamented trekking long distances to their destinations because of the high cost of transportation.
The situation appeared worse in Kaduna State as many of the major outlets which sold the product at the weekend, did not dispense yesterday.
At black markets where some desperate residents turned to, a litre was N1,500
Cost of transportation also increased by 100 percent, forcing many commuters, including schoolchildren, to be stranded at bus stops.
In Minna, Niger State, the few stations, including those of the NNPC that opened, also had long queues of vehicles.
The situation worsened in Plateau State with nearly 70 percent of the stations lacking petrol.
The development grounded business and other activities, especially in the capital city of Jos and its environs.
The few NNPC mega stations that had petrol dispensed at N617 per litre, independent marketers at N800 and black market dealers at N1,200.
Expectedly transport fare in Jos metropolis soared by 30 percent.
In Jalingo, Taraba State, it has been a double misery for the residents who have had no access to electricity and petrol in the past week.
While vehicle and business owners lamented that the scarcity had almost grounded them, domestic users said it has made it impossible to power their generators, especially at night.
A resident, who gave his name as Mohammed said: ‘’My family finds it had to sleep at nights. The heat here is excessive. Temperature is as high as 40° Celsius. Sometimes, it is higher. This suffering is getting worse with no petrol and electricity. Government, NNPC and the power distribution companies should wake up to their responsibilities.’’
A prominent politician in the state, Noah Bingong, said, “ This is the hottest period in Taraba State. Sleeping in the house is a problem. Eating is a problem, drinking is a problem. So, the heat has caused more harm and destruction.
‘’People have lost their businesses. People no longer get cold water. When you cook soup for three days, now you have to finish it that day.’’
In Ebonyi, some filling stations did not open because they ran out of stock. The few that opened sold for between N780 to N850 per litre.
However, the increase in pump price did not affect intra-city transport cost.
Adamawa State residents said their problem was not scarcity but the ever-rising cost of petrol.
Some said they had decided to park their vehicles while others could not spend between N950 and N970 on a litre of petrol.
At black markets, it was N1,250 per litre yesterday.
There was also no improvement in Makurdi, Benue State. The product sold for N810 per litre at most independent filling stations.
Almost all the major marketers in the city had no supplies as of 4 pm yesterday.
The worsening scarcity turned a boom period for black market operators, who sold a litre for N1,300.

*No scarcity in Akwa Ibom, Sokoto
Although there was no scarcity in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State yesterday, price rose from N690 and N700 to N750. The rise in pump price resulted to an increase in the cost of intra and inter-state transport
There was significant improvement in Sokoto metropolis and environs. A litre sold for N620 at NNPC mega stations but N1,300 at those operated by independent markers.
Two days ago, the independent dealers sold the product for as much as N2000 and N2500 per litre.

Diverse career paths, challenges for Nigerians in Wales ‘

    • A closer look at labour laws, immigration, and Job opportunities

Nigerians in Wales, United Kingdom face diverse career opportunities, yet challenges persist in labour laws,  Executive Director of BAME Mental Health Support (BMHS), Alfred Oyekoya . He said black community in Wales, especially Nigerians, face complexities of Wales’ labour landscape.

Oyekoya said:’’While Wales’ labour laws uphold equality, systemic barriers and unconscious bias affect the black community. Employment rates and disparities highlight ongoing challenges, necessitating a comprehensive examination of data and intersectional factors such as gender and class.

‘’Precise data on the ratio of employed Nigerians versus those relocating to Wales is elusive. Factors like immigration status and employment sectors contribute to the complexity.

‘’ The Employability Anchor Programme aims to address challenges faced by ethnic minorities in accessing employment opportunities.

‘’Salary disparities between white Welsh and Nigerian immigrants can result from various factors. Proactive measures, including fair recruitment practices and regular pay equity audits, are essential to address these disparities.

‘’Wales operates under the broader UK immigration framework, with national policies dictating entry and settlement conditions.

While the Welsh government influences aspects like integration and support for refugees, there isn’t a distinct “Welsh Immigration Law.”

‘’Acceptance of black immigrants in Wales varies based on individual experiences and community attitudes. Efforts to promote diversity, cultural awareness, and community cohesion are crucial for fostering greater acceptance.

‘’Nigerians in Wales have diverse career paths in healthcare, education, technology, finance, and skilled trades. A recent job fair in Swansea aimed to connect job seekers with employers in key sectors, resulting in significant employment opportunities.

‘’The job fair, initiated in 2011, has evolved into a vital event, supporting over 1500 individuals monthly. Positive feedback from employers and attendees underscores its success in facilitating job placements and community engagement.

‘’The reinstatement of Emmanuel Okohoboh at Swansea University highlights challenges faced by students, emphasizing the importance of transparent and compassionate processes within educational institutions.

According to Oyekoya, While legislative initiatives demonstrate progress, challenges remain in implementing policies to protect the interests of the black community. Collaborative efforts involving government and community organizations are crucial for tangible improvements.

The mental health situation in Wales reflects a complex landscape with increasing demand for services. Interventions such as medication, therapy, and community support aim to address challenges, but resource constraints and access barriers persist, he said.

Despite recommendations for modernizing the Mental Health Act, substantive legislative change is imperative. The delay in implementing crucial reforms underscores the need for sustained investment and comprehensive approaches to mental health care, Oyekoya added.

Tinubu to Nigerians: Buy home-made goods to sustain stronger naira

    • Urges citizens to blow the whistle on currency manipulators
    • Ban on foreign trips to save N5bn quarterly

From President Bola Tinubu yesterday came a plea to Nigerians to deliberately patronise home-made goods and services with a view to sustaining the current positive showing of the Naira at the foreign exchange market.

He said while the fair development around Naira’s exchange value did not yet call for celebration, more work and efforts were required sustain the gains.

He also appealed to the generality of Nigerians to blow the whistle on those undermining the national currency.

Tinubu, who spoke through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, during a briefing of State House correspondents, said government was working hard at strengthening the naira to make life easier for Nigerians when the new minimum wage comes into effect.

The Naira has appreciated at the foreign exchange market over the last few days, gaining N18 to close at 1,382/$ at the official market on Thursday.

“This is clearly the direction all of us have wanted to head and we are very sober to the fact that this is no time to rest or to clap.

“This is a time to deepen our efforts to dig in and to work harder, which is why His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has approved a series of interventions to ensure that we see a mass strengthening of the Nigerian Naira against all other global currencies,” Ngelale said.

According to him, Tinubu wants Nigerians to understand that “there has never been a more important time in our history to actively agree together that we will patronise and purchase made in Nigeria products across all value chains, across all sectors.”

Continuing, he said: “There is an intentionality that we must have on this issue that we want a strong currency. We want the spending power of our people to go up. We want every Naira and kobo we earn to be more valuable, not just here, but when we travel abroad. The way to achieve that is by doing just this.

“In addition to that, His Excellency Mr. President, beyond the appeal to Nigerians to actively and intentionally make that decision every day to patronise made-in-Nigeria products and services across the board, he is also wanting to ensure that Nigerians fully understand that the momentum that we are now seeing, with respect to the strengthening of our currency, is not going to slow down.”

Ngelale attributed the rise in the exchange rate of the Naira to recent efforts “in dealing decisively with sharp practices on certain crypto-currency trading platforms, dealing decisively with sharp practices within the parallel market of the foreign exchange ecosystem.

“These things are now yielding fruit.

“What we now will need to see is an active effort on the part of our people to blow the whistle wherever they see any of these sharp practices taking place, to communicate with the agencies that deal with these issues directly and understanding that this is not a government versus malign actors issue.

“This is a Federal Republic of Nigeria versus malign actors issue, and the activities of these actors negatively impact everybody seated in this room and everybody watching this broadcast and all Nigerians, both at home and abroad. So all of us have to take up the mantle and agree that we will collaborate together to deal with these issues.

“He is also ensuring that we bring a sustainable strength to the currency so that when we talk about a new minimum wage, because many of our people have asked, you know government officials about when the new minimum wage is coming in, those negotiations are ongoing.

“But what we do not want is a situation in which the minimum wage continues to be what it has always been in the history of our country, which is a moving goalpost.”

He warned that the proposed minimum wage would result in nothing for workers “if we do not get a firm grip on the value of our currency and it continues to be a volatile, devaluing asset.”

He added: “And so we are focused on ensuring that yes, we arrive at a new minimum wage that states can afford, and that will deal with all of the needs of Nigerian families across the country.

“But we also want to ensure that what we peg it at something that is sustainable over a number of years based on the long term, you know, stability that we want to bring to the Nigerian Naira with the interventions we’re presently making.”

Ngelale also said the federal government hoped  to save N5 billion quarterly through the imposition of a  three-month ban on all foreign trips funded by public money for ministers, heads of government agencies, and other officials.

The ban, which takes effect from April 1, 2024, is aimed at reducing the rising expenses incurred by ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) on international travel and ensuring that cabinet members and heads of MDAs focus on their respective mandates for effective service delivery.

“So the President is doing everything he can to ensure that he steps in to ease the burden on families while also ensuring that he holds the public sector and the federal government of Nigeria accountable to prudent spending, ensuring that we cut down drastically on travel expenditures, ensuring that with the temporary ban that is being put in place from April 1 on all but unnecessary foreign travel, we’re expecting to save over N5 billion per quarter,” the President’s spokesman said.

“This is going to be one out of several initiatives the President is taking to ensure that we reduce waste in the public sector in such a way that we can actually steer these very needed recurrent resources into the hands of those who are doing important work on behalf of the Nigerian people.

“For example, Nigerians are well aware that judicial officers in the country are going to finally have internationally competitive pay rates, salary skills, which is very important for us, very strategic in the sense that we can dramatically reduce the impact that corruption has always played in the judiciary, which has an impact on not just the ability of Nigerians to get effective justice in the country, but also to ensure that businesses who we are now asking around the world to invest in Nigeria have a judicial system that they can trust with respect to any litigation that could arise from business practice in the country.

“The effects are huge and the President is taking a multi-sectoral and comprehensive approach to ensuring that we bring prudence to government expenditure at a time when we are restructuring the economy of the Federation in such a way that sectors that are employing our people, that are empowering our people are those sectors that will be able to more easily access lending both commercially and from public sector sources.”

Ngelale similarly dwelt on other government efforts to reshape the economy, including the Presidential conditional grant scheme under which over one million Nigerian businesses will be financially empowered with up to N50000 per nano enterprise, which they will not have to pay back.

Beneficiaries are spread across the 774 local government areas of the country.

Besides over N150 billion is being disbursed from the Bank of Industry and Small and Medium Enterprise Development Agency while  single-digit interest rate loans of up to N2 million are also coming the way of thousands of small and medium scale enterprises across  the federation.

Ngelale added that President Tinubu has prioritised intervention of the sum of N75b to 75 industries and manufacturing companies with staff strength of over 1,000 workers to ensure necessary support is given to such firms, thereby expanding their hiring strength.

“We want to ensure that those industries and sectors that are massively employing our people are those industries that are prioritised concerning government intervention, which is why the President has approved over N75 billion to be dispersed to 75 large-scale manufacturers across all states of the Federation.

“These are going to be manufacturers who employ over 1,000 Nigerians in each of their facilities and industries. We are going to ensure that they have the support that they need on the large scale so that Nigerian families who rely on these large-scale businesses are protected.

“We want to see our large-scale industries not just refuse to fire people, but actively increase and expand their hiring at this difficult time.”
