    Heed climate warnings, NIMET urges Nigerians

    Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Prof. Charles Anosike, has urged Nigerians to heed climate warnings in line with the United Nations Early Warnings for All (EW4ALL) Initiatives.

    He spoke yesterday at the Tree Planting and Climate Action Summit themed ‘Tree-mendous Strategy for a Sustainable Future’, held at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Anambra State.

    Anosike, represented by Director of the Directorate of Applied Meteorological Services (DAMS), Mrs. Glory Onyegbule, noted that NiMet has, over the years, developed mutually-beneficial partnerships with research institutions and the academia for the overall good of the country.

    “These partnerships have played significant roles in improving climate knowledge, climate risk management, disaster risk preparedness, climate appreciation and awareness among others”, he said.

    Match early warning with early action to reduce disasters – NiMet DG

    The Director General of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Prof. Charles Anosike, has urged Nigerians to match early warning with early action to reduce climate-related disasters.

    He also charged Nigerians to heed climate warnings in line with the United Nations Early Warnings for All (EW4ALL) Initiatives.

    Prof. Anosike disclosed this on Wednesday, July 17, at the Tree Planting and Climate Action Summit with the theme: ‘Tree-mendous Strategy for a Sustainable Future’, at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Igbariam, Anambra state. 

    Anosike, who was represented by the Director of the Directorate of Applied Meteorological Services (DAMS), Mrs Glory Onyegbule, said over the years, NiMet has developed mutually beneficial partnerships with research Institutions and the academia across the country for the overall good of the nation.

    He said: “These partnerships have played significant roles in improving climate knowledge, climate risk management, disaster risk preparedness, climate appreciation and awareness among others”.

    He informed the audience that recent decades have seen increasing frequency and intensity of flooding across the country.

    “Heatwave and heat stress are gradually becoming a regular occurrence yearly, dry spell frequency and intensity are also on the increase with potential danger for the occurrence of meteorological drought.

    “Weather storms (thunderstorms, line-squalls, rainstorms etc.) are now becoming more violent. Mudslides, erosions, including coastal inundation are not left out. All these are consequences of the changing climate with attendant human and socioeconomic losses to affected communities and the nation at large”.

    He said human actions like deforestation, urbanisation, transportation, industrialization, indiscriminate waste disposal, and land use have contributed to the rapidly changing climate.

    “Combating the cause and effect of climate change requires the collective action of all citizenries at national, state and local government levels including communities”.

    Professor Anosike commended the Acting Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Kate Omenugha, and the university community’s action through the Tree Planting and Climate Action Summit, adding that it should be emulated by other institutions.

    Prof. Anosike also explained that NiMet carries out early warnings through the annual seasonal climate prediction (SCP).

     “For the effective impact of the SCP and other early warning products from NiMet, these early warnings must be matched with early actions by all to mitigate the associated risks and build a more resilient society”.

    He expressed hope that the university will continue to utilise NiMet forecast in nurturing the trees planted and assured that the agency will continue to collaborate with the institution and other stakeholders in ensuring the timely release of accurate weather and climate information that is impact-based and actionable.

    Nigerian meteorological Agency (NiMET) Director-General/Chief Executive Officer (DG/CEO) Prof. Charles Anosike has urged staff of the agency to adhere to ethical practices.

    Anosike spoke yesterday at the launch of the agency’s Anti-corruption and bribery policy and code of ethics.

    According to him, upholding the principles of ethics and integrity would build trust with clients and stakeholders, adding that it would also ensure that the agency actualises its mandate by contributing to national socio-economic development and safety of lives and property.

    He described the presence of the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and other resource persons as reaffirmation of the collaborative spirit between NiMET and the ICPC in the collective fight against corruption. He said that this underscores their commitment to institutionalizing ethics and integrity in the public service.

    While presenting the NiMET Code of Ethics and Anti-Corruption and Bribery Policy, Anosike said the documents represent the agency’s unwavering commitment to ethical conduct and determination to combat corruption at all levels.

    NiMet boss tasks staff to comply with code of ethics in public service

    The director general of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Prof. Charles Anosike, has charged staff of the agency to comply with the code of ethics while discharging their duties.

    He spoke on Tuesday, July 16, during the agency’s Anti-Corruption and Bribery Policy and Code of Ethics launch.

    Anosike, while welcoming guests from the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and other resource persons, said their presence shows their collaborative spirit in the fight against corruption.

    He added that the collaboration underscores the agencies’ commitment to institutionalizing ethics and integrity in the public service.

    He said: “The principles of ethics, integrity, and accountability are the foundation for any successful organization. They form the bedrock of any meteorological organization’s credibility and effectiveness. Upholding these values would go a long way in building trust with our clients and stakeholders.

    “They would also help in ensuring that NiMet as an agency actualizes its mandate by contributing to national socio-economic development and safety of lives and property”.

    While presenting the NiMet Code of Ethics and Anti-Corruption and Bribery Policy, Prof. Anosike said; “These documents represent our unwavering commitment to ethical conduct and our determination to combat corruption at all levels. As we unveil these documents today, we reaffirm our commitment to fostering an environment where ethical behaviour is a culture and corruption has no place”.

    He added that the Anti-Corruption and Bribery Policy is a firm declaration of NiMet’s zero-tolerance stance against corruption.

    “This position is vital as corruption is not only capable of undermining the effectiveness of our services and realization of our goals but could also erode public trust in the critical work we do. The Policy details the Agency’s mechanisms to prevent, detect, and address any form of bribery and corruption. It sends a clear message that NiMet is committed to transparency and accountability in all its operations.

    “All staff members are therefore expected to embrace and adhere to the highest standards of ethical conduct as stipulated in the NiMet code of ethics and Anti-corruption and Bribery Policy”.

    The chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices & Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr Musa Aliyu commended the management and staff of NiMet for launching the code of ethics and Anti-corruption and Bribery Policy.

    Aliyu who was represented by Charles Nwosu said: “We are highly impressed with the working environment we have seen at NiMet. We will take this impression back to the ICPC Chairman who in turn will take the message back to President Bola Tinubu so that he will know that NiMet is on board with him in the fight against corruption.”

    NiMet predicts displacement, waterborne diseases due to rainfall

    The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has identified displacement and outbreak of waterborne diseases as potential impacts following heavy rainfall witnessed in some parts of the country.

    The agency also said there are chances of damage to roads and bridges, as well as flooding.

    This was contained in the agency’s impact-based weather forecast issued yesterday.

    The forecast also indicated states that would witness heavy to low rainfall between Tuesday and Thursday this week.

    The forecast reads: “On Tuesday, July 16, (0000-2359hrs), heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Bauchi, Niger, Kebbi, Cross River and Akwa Ibom states. Moderate to heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Bauchi, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Taraba, Adamawa, Zamfara, Nasarawa, the Federal Capital Territory, Plateau, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states.

    “Low to moderate rainfall is expected over parts of Yobe, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Zamfara, Kebbi, Gombe, Niger, Kwara, Plateau, Nasarawa, the Federal Capital Territory, Oyo, Ondo, Edo, Delta, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Abia and Cross River States.

    “For Wednesday, moderate to heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Niger, Kebbi, Akwa Ibom and Cross River States. Low to moderate rainfall is expected over parts of Bauchi, Kebbi, Taraba, Adamawa, Plateau, Niger, the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, Kogi, Kwara, Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Imo, Abia, Cross River and Akwa Ibom states.

    “On Thursday, Moderate to heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Kaduna, Nasarawa, Plateau, Akwa Ibom and Cross River. Low to moderate rainfall is expected over parts of Bauchi, Kaduna, Kebbi, Taraba, Nasarawa, Plateau, Kogi, Niger, Kwara, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Edo, Delta, Rivers Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Cross River and Akwa Ibom states.

    “For moderate to heavy rainfall; displacement of people due to flood, outbreaks of waterborne diseases, and damages to infrastructures (roads, bridges) are expected.

Low to moderate rainfall is expected over parts of Bauchi, Kebbi, Taraba, Adamawa, Plateau, Niger, the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, Kogi, Kwara, Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Imo, Abia, Cross River and Akwa Ibom States.

    On Thursday, the agency stated: “Moderate to Heavy Rainfall is expected over parts of Kaduna, Nasarawa, Plateau, Akwa Ibom and Cross River. Low to moderate rainfall is expected over parts of Bauchi, Kaduna, Kebbi, Taraba, Nasarawa, Plateau, Kogi, Niger, Kwara, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Edo, Delta, Rivers Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Cross River and Akwa Ibom states.

    On the likely impact of the rainfall, it stated: “For moderate to heavy rainfall; displacement of people due to floods, outbreaks of waterborne diseases, and damages to infrastructures (roads, bridges,) are expected.)

    Some of the hazards predicted during the rainfall include; flash flooding, riverine flooding, soil erosion, thunder, lightning, and strong winds.

    NiMet predicts 3-day thunderstorms, rains from Monday

    The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted thundery and rainy weather activities from Monday to Wednesday across the country.

    NiMet`s weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, forecast morning thunderstorms over parts of Taraba, Adamawa, Zamfara, Kebbi, Katsina, Kano and Kaduna States.

    According to the outlook, thunderstorms are expected over parts of Taraba, Kaduna, Yobe, Katsina, Kano, Borno, Bauchi and Jigawa states later in the day.

    “In the North Central region, rains are expected over parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Niger and Nasarawa states during the morning hours.

     “Later in the day, thunderstorms and rains are anticipated over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Kwara, Plateau and Kogi States.

    “Morning drizzle and rains are anticipated over parts of Lagos, Abia, Ebonyi, Ondo, Ogun, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River; while in the afternoon and evening hours, intermittent rains are anticipated over the entire southern region,“ it said.

     NiMet envisaged morning thunderstorms over Adamawa, Taraba, Kaduna, Gombe, Katsina, Kano, Bauchi, Yobe, Borno and Jigawa on Tuesday.

    It predicted thunderstorms over parts of Adamawa, Taraba, Gombe, Bauchi, Yobe, Borno and Jigawa states later in the day.

     “In the North central region, rains are expected over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Benue and Kogi States during the morning hours.

    “Later in the day, thunderstorms and rains are anticipated over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Plateau, Nasarawa, Niger, Kogi, Kwara and Benue States.

    “Morning rains are anticipated over parts of Ogun, Ondo, Delta, Cross River and Akwa Ibom States; while in the afternoon and evening hours, thunderstorms and intermittent rains are anticipated over the entire Southern region,” it said.

    According to NiMet, morning thunderstorms are expected over parts of Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara States on Wednesday.

    The agency anticipated thunderstorms over the entire region later in the day.

    “Later in the day, thunderstorms and rains are anticipated over parts of Plateau, Nasarawa, FCT, Kogi, Kwara and Benue States.

    ” Morning rains are anticipated over parts of Cross River and Akwa Ibom States; while in the afternoon/evening hours, intermittent rains are anticipated over the entire southern region,” it said.

    NiMet urged the Airline operators to get updated weather reports and forecasts from NiMet for effective planning in their operations.

    Rains: Disconnect electrical appliances, NIMet warns

    Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) yesterday advised Nigerians to disconnect electrical appliances before and during rains.
    It said were prospects of flash flooding as a result of the expected moderate to heavy rainfall in some parts of the country, adding that strong winds may accompany the rains.
    It stated that strong winds were threats to weak structures, trees and masts.
    Other likely hazards, according to NiMet, include slippery road surfaces and reduced visibility during the rain which can disrupt road traffic.

    NiMet stated: “Heavy rainfall is anticipated during the forecast period (10th to 12th) over parts of Cross River and Akwa Ibom states.
    “Moderate to Heavy Rainfall is anticipated over parts of Taraba, Adamawa, Benue, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Delta, Bayelsa, Edo, Ondo, Ogun, Lagos, Kebbi, Kogi, Niger, the FCT, Kaduna, Plateau, Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Kwara, Abia and Imo states.

    We must collaborate to succeed, NiMet DG charges top officials

    The Director General of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Prof. Charles Anosike, has charged directors and senior management staff of the agency to collaborate to deliver value to the various stakeholders.

    Anosike, who admitted that the agency was faced with structural challenges, said the challenges were surmountable with adequate cooperation amongst staff.

    He spoke on Wednesday during the quarterly senior staff meeting of the agency which included Directors and General Managers.

     He said: “I want to thank you all, especially the Directors, for being instrumental in settling in the new management. I want to appreciate every one of you for your support”.

    “It is important for us to note that we have some structural challenges. Sometimes we misconstrue these structural challenges but they are not insurmountable. What we do will be dependent on how we work together, how we collaborate, how we care, and how we function for us to succeed”.

    Prof. Anosike while acknowledging the contributions of the staff, urged them to make every day in public service count.

    “I am not taking it for granted. I appreciate everyone who works here and contributes towards our success story”.

    Training on climate data tool, beneficial, says NIMET

    Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Prof. Charles Anosike, has said the training on Automatic Weather Station (AWS) configuration and Climate Data Tool (CDT) will help the agency improve data availability and quality control by combining station data with satellite.

    Prof. Anosike, who spoke yesterday at the opening of training at NiMet’s headquarters, said: “The training is in line with NiMet Management’s determination to ensure that staff are adequately trained and skilled in modern trends in weather and climate application tools.

    “Building Agricultural Systems Resilience in Nigeria Project, under which the training is being conducted, in collaboration with Sahel Consulting, is a welcome development, in support of the government’s effort to boost food security, ensure early warnings and safeguard lives and property.
