    NiMet predicts heavy rainfall in 14 States this week

    The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted heavy rainfall in 14 States this week.

    The States predicted to experience heavy rainfall are; Niger, Plateau, Benue, Kaduna, Taraba, Delta, Imo, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, Bayelsa, Ekiti and Osun States.

    The agency while stating that the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) is expected to be strong within the week over the West African region, explained that the strong MJO would lead to good moisture influx and velocity divergence which is expected to enhance the prospects of heavy rainfall.

    This is contained in the weekly weather forecast bulletin on Tuesday by NiMet.

    The forecast is valid for seven days from 18th June to 24th June 2024.

    The bulletin reads: “During the week, the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) is expected to be strong within the week over the West African region. Good moisture influx and velocity divergence is expected to enhance the prospects of Heavy rainfall over parts of Niger, Plateau, Benue, Kaduna, Taraba, Delta, Imo, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, Bayelsa, Ekiti and Osun states.”

    The agency also highlighted some States that would experience moderate to heavy rainfall.

    “Moderate to heavy rainfall is anticipated over parts of Zamfara, Kano, Borno, Gombe, Adamawa, the Federal Capital Territory, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Ogun, Ondo, Oyo, Ondo, Lagos, Edo, Enugu, Ebonyi and Anambra states.”

    It predicted low rainfall over parts of Sokoto, Katsina, Jigawa and Yobe States, adding that the rest of the country should experience low to moderate rainfall.

    The agency warned that the heavy rainfall in some parts of the country could lead to flash floods.

    “There are prospects of flash floods on roads, bridges & low-lying areas which can disrupt vehicular traffic. The public is advised to take necessary safety precautions; do not walk through fast-flowing runoff waters.”

    The agency also predicted the maximum and minimum temperature that would be witnessed by various States this week.

    It stated that the maximum temperature range of 35 – 40oC is anticipated over parts of Sokoto, Katsina, Jigawa, Yobe, Kebbi, Zamfara, Kano, Bauchi, Gombe and Borno states.

    “Temperature range of 30 – 35oC is expected over parts of Kaduna, Plateau, Taraba, Lagos, Delta, Bayelsa and Rivers states.
    The rest of the country is expected to experience a temperature range of 25 – 30oC.”

    According to NiMet, the minimum temperature range of 15 – 20oC is expected over parts of Plateau states.

    A temperature range of 25 – 30oC is anticipated over parts of Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Bauchi, Yobe, Gombe and Borno states. However, temperatures 20 – 25oC and above are expected over the remaining parts of the country.

    The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has disclosed that is sparing no efforts in ramping up in the human development capability of its personnel.

    To drive this agenda, the weather forecast agency said it has embarked on the  continuous development of their skills of its staff.

    In a statement at the weekend, the  agency said itis currently conducting a general training on performance management for staff members within Grade Levels 4 -7 in the South-South, South-East, South West and North West zones of the country.

     Information made available to the press by the Director of Human Resources of  the agency, Dr Nasiru Sule, shows that staff members from the mentioned zones are being trained in Kano, Ibadan and Enugu.

    He said  senior staff training had earlier been conducted and continues to receive management’s attention. 

    The junior staff training , he said will last from Thursday, 13th June to Saturday, 15th June, 2024. 

    “By investing in the professional growth of our staff, we aim to Improve operational efficiency and effectiveness, enhance service delivery and client satisfaction, foster a culture of innovation and adaptability, and ensure compliance with the latest industry standards and best practices”, Dr. Sule said.

    “What we do at NIMET must always align to what the Tinubu government is trying to achieve, linking it with the Aviation sector roadmap of Festus Keyamo,  the  Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development.

    “Starting with Tinubu government’s 8-point agenda for economic recovery; food security; poverty eradication; growth, job creation; access to capital; inclusion; rule of law; and fighting corruption, down to the performance bond the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, signed with Aviation Agencies Heads and their Directors in February 2024. 

    “Development of human capacity is a key deliverable in the performance bond. As a scientific agency, the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Professor Charles Anosike always ensures that both management and staff are aligned to these objectives”., Dr. Nasiru Sani concluded.

    NiMet organises zonal training to boost workforce efficiency

    The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has organised zonal training for its workforce to enhance their capability.

    The agency’s training for its workers on Grade Levels Four to Seven were held in the Southsouth, Southeast, Southwest, and Northwest.

    A statement by the Director of Human Resources at the agency, Dr. Nasiru Sule, said the workers from the zones were being trained in Kano, Ibadan, and Enugu.

    S said that senior staff training had earlier been conducted and continues to receive management’s attention.

    The training for junior workers, which started on June 13, will end tomorrow.

    NiMet, Oxfam partner to reduce humanitarian emergencies

    The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and Oxfam have announced plans to work together to reduce humanitarian emergencies in the country.

    Announcing the partnership at a meeting with officials of both organisations yesterday in Abuja, NiMet’s Director General, Prof. Charles Anosike, said: “There is no early action without early warning. NiMet already has products, such as the annual Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP), and other advisories and forecasts we issue.

    “Oxfam has the platform. So, this is a relationship that will work. NiMet has other partners, including the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and others, and publishes the SCP in local Nigerian languages.

    “The relationship with Oxfam is a welcome development as the work both organisations do is very critical.”

    Oxfam’s Programme Manager in Nigeria, William Mafwalal, said the confederation of independent non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and its partners would launch two anticipatory pilot projects in Nigeria to tackle floods and drought.

    He said: “The objective of the one-year project, which is scalable, is to minimise humanitarian actions and interventions. The pilot for the flood project will be carried out in Adamawa State, while the pilot for the drought project will be carried out in Katsina.

    “NiMet is already working on key areas that impact the projects. With NiMet’s data, expertise, understanding and technology, Oxfam and its partners can develop early action protocols.

    “We are happy and excited to partner NiMet. This is like a one-stop shop. NiMet has all the data we require available in one location. It’s not like this in some of the other countries where we have worked.”

    The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted three days sunshine and thunderstorms from Monday to Wednesday across the country.

    NiMet weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja forecast sunny skies on Monday with patches of clouds over the northern region with chances of isolated thunderstorms over parts of Taraba state later in the day.

    ”Sunny skies with cloud patches are anticipated over the North Central region with prospects of thunderstorms over parts of Benue state during the afternoon and evening period.

    ”Cloudy skies are anticipated over the southern states with prospects of morning thunderstorms over parts of Cross River and Akwa Ibom states.

    ” In the afternoon to evening hours, isolated thunderstorms are anticipated over parts of Ondo, Ogun, Oyo, Imo, Abia, Edo, Ebonyi, Delta, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross River and Bayelsa states,” it said.

    NiMet anticipated sunny skies on Tuesday with patches of clouds over the northern region with prospects of isolated thunderstorms over parts of Adamawa, Kaduna and Taraba states later in the day.

    It envisaged the North Central region to be predominantly cloudy with chances of isolated thunderstorms over parts of Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Plateau and Nasarawa states during the afternoon and evening hours.

    “Cloudy atmosphere is expected during the morning hours over the southern states during the morning
    hours.

    “Later in the day, isolated thunderstorms are expected over parts of Ondo, Ekiti, Osun, Oyo, Imo, Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Cross River, Bayelsa, Delta and Lagos states,” it said.

    According to NiMet, sunny atmosphere with patches of clouds are anticipated over the northern region with prospects of isolated thunderstorms over parts of Taraba, Adamawa and Kaduna states during late hours on Wednesday.

    It predicted the North Central region to be cloudy with intervals of sunshine during the morning hours with isolated thunderstorms over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Plateau, Niger, Kwara and Kogi later in the day.

    The agency envisaged a cloudy atmosphere with prospects of isolated thunderstorms over parts of Akwa Ibom, Rivers and Cross River states during the morning period.

    NiMet anticipated thunderstorms over Imo, Enugu, Anambra, Ekiti, Ondo, Ogun, Edo, Ebonyi, Delta, Lagos, Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states later in the day.

    The agency urged the public to take adequate precaution as strong winds might precede the rains in areas where thunderstorms were likely to occur.

    NiMet advised Airline operators to get updated weather reports and forecasts from NiMet for effective planning in their operations.

    The Director General of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Prof. Charles Anosike, has urged the agency’s workers to ensure strict compliance with budgetary provisions.

    He said doing so would help its management and workers to achieve the set goals in the course of the budget year.

    Anosike, who spoke at a budget retreat organised for the agency’s workers yesterday in Abuja, said his advice was in line with the performance bond NiMet signed with the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo (SAN).

    He said: “The NiMet budget retreat is fundamental for the new management and workers. It is an opportunity for us to improve our budgetary practices and discuss the 2024 budgetary provisions.

    A technical assistance programme funded by the German Government, the Global Risk Modelling Alliance (GRMA), has expressed its readiness to partner the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) to create and boost access to risk data and models.

    The proposed partnership is expected to cover the application of open-source platforms and open standards designed to inform risk financing.

    It would also provide technical assistance through strategic and operational projects with key stakeholders in Nigeria.

    The NiMet Director General, Prof. Charles Anosike, announced this while hosting GRMA representatives, Alastair Norris and Renuka Srinivasan, yesterday in Abuja.

    Anosike said: “NiMet welcomes the idea of the proposed partnership with GRMA to support our efforts and improve our forecasting and dissemination capacity.”

    The NiMet boss said the agency provides early warnings to farmers and other stakeholders by downscaling and disseminating the seasonal climate prediction (SCP).

    He added that pilot briefings and daily advisories on weather and climate conditions are among other ways NiMet provides early warnings to the aviation sector.

    GRMA leverages public and private sector risk expertise to enhance capabilities in vulnerable communities to undertake risk analytics.

    Falemi Ayodeji of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC) accompanied the GRMA team during the visit.

    The Director of the Department of Applied Meteorological Services (DAMS), Mrs. Gloria Onyegbule, and the Chief Meteorologist at NiMet, Mr. James Ijampy, were also present during the visit.

    During a courtesy visit on the Director General, Chief Executive Officer of the NiMet, and Nigeria’s permanent representative with WMO, Professor Charles Anosike, on Thursday, May 2, Alastair Norris and Renuka Srinivasan from the GRMA, said the proposed partnership will also cover the application of open source platforms and open standards designed to inform risk financing, and providing technical assistance via strategic and operational projects co-defined with key stakeholders in Nigeria.

    According to Prof. Anosike, “NiMet welcomes the idea of the proposed partnership with GRMA to support our efforts and improve our forecasting and dissemination capacity”.

    He further stated that the agency provides early warnings to farmers and other stakeholders by downscaling and disseminating the seasonal climate prediction (SCP).

    Challenges facing climate early warning system, by NiMet boss

    The Director General of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Prof. Charles Anosike, has said inadequacy in meteorological observation networks is among the challenges facing climate early warning system in Nigeria.

    The NiMet boss listed other challenges as difficulties in reaching smallholder farmers with relevant climate advisories, especially rural women and youths, limited technical capacity, and fragmented coordination.

    Anosike spoke yesterday in Abuja at the inaugural meeting of “Building Agricultural Systems Resilience in Nigeria Project”.

    The NiMet boss said the project, which is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, aims to support Nigeria’s infrastructure for climate early action and warning systems.

    In a statement yesterday in Abuja, Anosike said: “The project will address the demand for relevant and timely climate information for decision-support analytics in the agriculture sector through increasing analytic capacity and capability of the system, improving capacity to support locally tailored climate analytics and information services, aligning national early action infrastructure for improved regional impact and enhancing early warning systems operational governance through inter-agency cooperation.”

    The steering committee, which comprises technical directors from key ministries and agencies, technical partners, implementing partners, and representatives from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, will oversee the project’s implementation, provide strategic guidance, monitor progress, advocate for programme coordination, and ensure effective risk management.

    Stakeholders involved in the project are: NiMet, the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), the Federal Ministry of Environment, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security.

    The project is being managed by Sahel Consulting Agriculture and Nutrition Limited.
