  • NIMASA to partner NIMET on meteorological data

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) is to work with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) on meteorological data with a view to ensuring safety of lives and sea.

The Director General of NIMASA, Dr. Dakuku Peterside said this when the Director General of NIMET, Dr. Anthony Anuforom and his management team visited NIMASA headquarters in Lagos.

He said the Agency is interested in studying meteorological data for ships by way of giving them information, analyzing data, dissemination of information and in any other way that meteorological data could aid navigation for safety of lives and vessels on sea.

According to him, “In pursuit of that mandate, we are ever ready to collaborate with anybody who can be of assistance to us. Without a doubt, by reason of the technical capacity you have in the study of weather analysis of meteorological data, you are definitely useful to us. It is in realization of that piece of fact that a relationship was initiated sometimes in 2008.

“It is in the same realization that we set out to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between our Agencies in pursuit of common objectives of securing lives and assets at sea, in line with the provisions of SOLAS, particularly Chapter 5, which is an instrument of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO)”, the DG said.

While also appreciating the importance of climate observation and meteorological data to safety of lives at sea, the NIMASA boss reiterated the Agency’s commitment in ensuring safety and security of lives and assets on the sea, he added, “We are not signing the MoU for signing sake; there is a mutually beneficial relationship for NIMET, for NIMASA and for those who need our services, especially mariners. They need this meteorological data and weather information to assure them that their safety is guaranteed, that they are on course and that they are doing the right thing.”

Earlier, the Director General of NIMET, Dr. Anuforom acknowledged the role of the maritime industry to economic development and expressed willingness to collaborate with NIMASA in its quest to ensure protection of lives and assets at sea.

“We are so active and vibrant in aviation and we believe that we should be even more vibrant considering the contribution of the maritime sector to this economy. With the number of ships that come in, issues of safety and security are paramount,” the NIMET boss stated.

  • NIMET alerts airlines, others over dust haze

NIMET alerts airlines, others over dust haze

The Nigerian Meteorology Agency (NIMET) has warned airlines of harmattan haze sweeping across the country.

The agency said the adverse weather condition will compel airlines to delay or cancel scheduled flights whenever horizontal visibility falls below the stipulated minima.

The agency on October 2016 issued an advisory forecast for dust outbreaks to affect the country during the December to February dry season period.

The Director-General of NIMET, Dr. Anthony Anuforom, said occasional outbreak of dust will reduce horizontal visibility significantly to 1000m and below in some places.

He also stated that the expected increase in concentration of the dust particles will lead to colder and drier atmosphere as well as increase in incidences of respiratory disorder.

In the course of monitoring the weather situation in and outside Nigeria, he said NiMet has observed that in the past 24hours, dust has been raised over the source regions in Niger/Chad Republic which will be transported by northeast trade winds into and across the country.

He noted that visibility as low as 100m were reported by some stations in the Niger republic.

His words: “Current reports of visibility values across the country are good. However, deterioration is expected to set in beginning from areas in the far northern parts of the country over the next twenty four to forty-eight hours.”

“There is prospect of fresh dust plumes being raised in the coming days, with its attendant consequence.

“NiMet will, however, continue to monitor the weather and climate conditions as they unfold and provide regular updates and advisories to the general public,” he added.

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has continuously alerted airlines and passengers of the impact of harmattan haze to air travel. It has its minimum standard visibility between 700 to 1000 feet depending on the airport.

Experts reason that regulatory body should look at the equipment of each airline and grant some of the airlines that have Next Generation aircraft the right to operate under low visibility, using the modern equipment in their aircraft.

  • Expect flood in Kaduna, Benue, nine others – NiMet

Expect flood in Kaduna, Benue, nine others – NiMet

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) on Monday said 11 states in the country are likely to experience flood between August and October.

The flood, according to the agency, will be caused by rainfall intensity which has made soil moisture to reach saturation level and can no longer absorb more rainwater.

The states to be affected are – Akwa Ibom, Bauchi, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Kaduna, Kwara, Nasarawa, Yobe and Zamfara.

NiMet Head of Corporate Communication, Eva Azinge, stated these in a statement issued in Abuja.

To avoid the flood, NiMet advised governments, communities and individuals in the vulnerable parts of the country to take proactive actions by clearing water channels and drainages, and also avoid activities that block the free flow of flood waters.

The agency said attention should be paid to its daily weather forecasts and alerts, adding that relevant agencies should perfect their emergency evacuation plans and activate them as soon as necessary.

The statement said, “NiMet, in exercise of its mandate to monitor the weather and climate of the country at all times, and working in collaboration with the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency has been monitoring rainfall events across the country.

“After thorough analyses of rainfall data from our observatories nationwide for June and July, we wish to provide the following information and advisories to the public, especially those in the affected areas that soil moisture has either reached saturation, or near saturation levels due to cumulative high intensity rainfall in some parts of the country in June and July.

“The affected states include Akwa Ibom, Bauchi, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Kaduna, Kwara, Nasarawa, Yobe and Zamfara. This means that floods should be expected in these areas because the soil is no longer able to absorb more rainwater in the coming weeks which coincide with the peak rainy season.

“Governments, communities and individuals in these vulnerable parts of the country are advised to take proactive actions, such as clearing water channels and drainages, and also avoid activities that block the free flow of flood waters.

“Closer attention should also be paid to NiMet’s daily weather forecasts and alerts. It is further advised that relevant agencies should perfect their emergency evacuation plans and activate them as soon as necessary.”
