Abia NSCDC command arrests 64-year-old child trafficker in Aba

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Abia State Command, has arrested a 64-year-old man, Mr. Nnanna Michael.

Mr. Michael, a native of the Arochukwu local government area of the state, was arrested in connection with the operation of illegal baby factories and child trafficking in Aba, the commercial nerve of the state.

The arrest by the NSCDC command took place on September 14, following credible intelligence provided to the command.

The command disclosed that two women, identified as Miss Doris Nelson (23) from Gombe state and Miss Ugochukwu Winner (21) from Ihitte Uboma in Imo State, were rescued from Mr. Michael’s residence during the operation.

Miss Nelson was said to have given birth on Monday, September 9, and sold her baby the following day to yet-to-be-identified buyers.

The other woman, Miss Winner is currently seven months pregnant and was being held under similar circumstances.

In his confessional statement, the NSCDC command said, Mr. Michael, a father of four and a former worker at a motherless home, admitted to harbouring pregnant women, taking care of them until delivery, and selling off their babies.

He was said to have revealed that Doris Nelson was introduced to him by a contact from Abuja, named Miracle, who brought her to his residence in Aba.

Further investigations, according to the command revealed that Miss Winner was introduced to Mr. Michael by one Evangelist First Samuel, who resides in Aba but is now at large.

The agreement entered by the parties was for Mr. Michael to purchase the baby after delivery and sell it to his potential buyers.

Preliminary investigations by the command further revealed that Mr. Michael has been in the illicit business for a long time, where he has been leveraging his contacts from his previous work experience at a motherless home to find both buyers and sellers.

Mr. Michael in his statement was said to have admitted to selling one baby last year and two babies this year before his arrest.

The NSCDC Abia State Command pledged to thoroughly investigate and identify all individuals involved in this syndicated operation.

It said that it remains steadfast in its commitment to pursuing Mr. Michael’s accomplices and bringing all those responsible for these serious crimes to justice. The command is determined to put an end to such illegal activities.

“Upon the conclusion of our investigation, the case will be transferred to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), which is statutorily empowered to prosecute these offences.

“The command is also calling on parents to take responsibility for the proper upbringing of their children, as this case showcases the failure of some families in safeguarding their children from such criminal elements.

“We equally urge members of the general public to be vigilant and provide us with credible intelligence of any suspicious activities within their surroundings.”
