NSCDC calls for the regulation of Pantaker markets in Abuja to curb theft, vandalism

The commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, Dr. Olusola Odumosu, has called for the regulation of Pantaker markets in the FCT.

This is in response to the ongoing theft and vandalization of government infrastructures in Abuja and its surroundings. Odumosu emphasized the need to regulate these markets because stolen infrastructures often end up there and are readily bought.

Intelligence reports have revealed that there is a significant market for damaged and vandalized government infrastructures, contributing to criminal activities in the FCT.

Odumosu made the remarks while addressing personnel of the Command during the Monday muster parade at the NSCDC FCT Command Headquarters.

He stated that the FCT administration needed to regulate the Pantaker markets in the territory.

He said intelligence gathered revealed that most vandalized items end up in Pantaker markets for sale.

“With the proliferation of pantaker markets all over the city and the suburbs, criminals have ready markets to sell vandalized metals, iron, aluminum, armoured cables, scraps, and other stolen items which had increased the spate of vandalism of public properties in the FCT.

“There is a need to address pressing concerns related to the sale and purchase of second-hand goods in pantaker markets which currently lacks comprehensive and diligent oversight.

“Regulation, monitoring, and enforcement of compliance with government policy will help curb to a reasonable extent the cases of vandalism of infrastructure in the territory,” the FCT Commandant said.

According to him, proper regulation will not only help to curb the excesses of criminally minded dealers who receive items from vandals of public facilities, but it will also foster economic stability by ensuring that only legitimate activities and authentic products are bought or sold in the market.

“Unregulated markets for used items pose inherent risks to consumers and undermine the integrity of its commercial operations.

“It is imperative that we establish clear rules and guidelines to protect the properties of individuals and that of the government.”

“Proper regulation has the potential to enhance marketplace accountability, and will help security agencies in identifying and bringing criminals who engage in acts of vandalism and theft to book,” Odumosu said.

He added that the recent completion of projects and the successful commissioning of various infrastructure by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike calls for improved service and a renewal of strategy against destruction of government property.

“It is therefore our collective responsibility as a Command to ensure the protection of these infrastructures which is a fulfilment of the ‘renewed hope’ promise of this current administration,” he said.

He charged his officers and men to redouble their efforts in the protection of critical infrastructure in the territory.

Odumosu warned that anyone caught attempting to sell vandalized or stolen items in these markets would face the full wrath of the law to serve as a deterrent to others.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has discovered and dismantled a massive illegal bunkering site in the Odagwa community, Etche local government area of Rivers state.

It was gathered that the operation was carried out by the Special Intelligence Squad set up by the corps’ Commandant-General, Ahmed Abubakar Audi, to step up the operational and intelligence mechanism in the protection of critical national assets and Infrastructure across the country.

Speaking in Port Harcourt on behalf of the Rivers State Commandant, Basil Igwebueze, the command’s spokesperson, SP Olufemi Ayodele said the operational tour across the massive forest took the operatives four hours.

He said the Commandant-General had the determination to wage a continuous war against illegal dealings in petroleum products, oil theft, vandalism of oil pipelines, and all forms of economic sabotage.

He said the special squad within a short period, dismantled over 350 illegal bunkering sites in the Niger Delta area and arrested and prosecuted hundreds of suspects.

He said the squad swung into action and arrested three suspects while others took to their heels manoeuvring the forest due to the terrain.

He explained that a large multinational’s manifold was invaded through a broken fence, and large industrial hoses were used to siphon crude oil and transmitted through numerous metal galvanised pipes to cooking pots and further stored in reservoirs for onward loading to would-be buyers.

CSO hails Audi’s transformation of NSCDC within two years

A civil society group, the National Coalition Against Terrorism, has lauded the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for progress under the leadership of Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi.

The commendation, delivered in a statement by National Coordinator Terrence Kuanum, highlighted the significant achievements and reforms initiated by Audi over the past two years.

He said: “Since his appointment, Commandant General (CG) Audi has undertaken a comprehensive vision to transform the NSCDC, focusing on enhancing professionalism and aligning the Corps with international best practices. In his inaugural address at the NSCDC National Headquarters in Abuja, CG Audi outlined his plan to “rejig, revamp, revitalize, restructure, and reposition” the Corps.

“Dr. Audi has implemented several initiatives aimed at improving the Corps’ effectiveness. Notably, he established the Commandant General’s Quarterly Conference to regularly assess and strategize on the Corps’ performance. Additionally, the creation of the Special Female Squad (SFS) addresses the security challenges faced by schools, earning widespread praise for its timely intervention.

“The SFS actively participates in the School and Community Security Vanguard (SCSV), a program designed to educate and protect schools and their surrounding communities. Under Dr. Audi’s leadership, the Corps has prioritized the training and retraining of personnel, with over 700 officers receiving advanced training in weapon handling within ten months of his tenure. This initiative also included developing standardized training curricula to promote uniformity and professionalism.

“Dr. Audi’s tenure has seen numerous reforms, including the establishment of the Private Guard Companies (PGC) and the Commandant General’s Special Intelligence Squad. He has also reactivated the Agro-rangers and intensified efforts against terror financing and economic sabotage, particularly crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism. The introduction of the CG’s Special Anti-vandal Squad and the reorganization of the anti-vandal unit further underscore these efforts.
