    NSCDC boss appoints new Commander for safe schools squad

    The Commandant-General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Dr Ahmed Audi, has appointed a new Commander for Safe Schools Response Coordination Centre.

    The new Commander of the Centre is Ahmed  Abodunrin. He takes over from Commander Tersoo Shaapera who has been redeployed to another unit.

    The Public Relations Officer of the Corps,  Babawale Afolabi, said in a statement that the change of guard has become necessary as “the Primary and Post-Primary Schools are set to resume in continuation with the academic calendar, and a kind of strategic reorganisation needed to boost operations of the centre.”

    “The NSCDC as a lead agency in the protection of critical national assets and infrastructure with schools inclusive, hosts the Federal Government’s National Safe Schools Response Coordination Centre (NSSRCC) which is first of its kind in the implementation of the safe Schools implementation project,” he said.

    He explained that the Centre located at the national headquarters of the NSCDC in Abuja, serves to coordinate state centres so far established among the 36 States of the federation.

    Afolabi said the Centre was established in February, 2023 to enhance the security of schools and host communities to coordinate security agencies and other critical stakeholders, by receiving and referring complaints and maintaining emergency hotlines.

    According to him several attacks on schools have been averted in the country, especially in the North and South-East through coordination with relevant stakeholders and security agencies.

    Afolabi said:”The Centre also has surveillance personnel among schools and host communities, especially at different locations, especially in places believed to be prone to attacks. The deployed operatives gather information which also leads to community engagement.

    “Dr. Ahmed Abodunrin fdc, the new NSCDC Commander of the National Safe Schools Response Coordination Centre was born in Iresi, Osun State.

    “He was a trained and accomplished journalist before he joined NSCDC as a volunteer in 1994 and rose through the ranks.

    “Dr. Abodunrin has held various major key appointments in the NSCDC and was a former State Commandant in Ogun and Ondo States.”

    NSCDC rescues woman who jumped into river

    The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Osun State Command, yesterday said it rescued a middle aged woman who jumped into Gbodofon (Osun) River in a suicide bid in Osogbo.

    A statement by the Osun NSCDC spokesperson, ASC Adeleke Kehinde, said officers of the NSCDC command pulled the woman out of the river on Tuesday, after receiving a distress call that someone jumped into the river.

    “The Search and Rescue Team of the command received a distress call from a member of the public and in less than 10 minutes, our officers were on the scene to rescue the victim.

     “The victim, a middle aged woman, was resuscitated and later taken to hospital for medical attention.” the statement said.

    It said the victim, after becoming conscious, explained that she came all the way from Iragbiji to Osogbo to commit suicide by jumping into Gbodofon (Osun) River.

    The PRO said the woman added that she took the decision to end her life because she was feeling fire burning in her body and the only way to quench the fire was to jump into Osun River.

    Adeleke said the state NSCDC Commandant, Agboola Sunday, hailed the Search and Rescue Team for being responsive and bringing to bear their training in disaster management.

    “Agboola assured residents of the command’s commitment to protect lives and property, even during emergencies.

    “He enjoined residents to take care of their mental health, adding that his men would pay close attention to all the rivers in the state to prevent people from jumping into them to commit suicide.” she said

    NSCDC decorates 1,000 newly promoted officers in FCT

    The Federal Capital Territory Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has decorated about 1,000 Officers of the Corps who were recently promoted by the federal government.

    About 21,000 personnel and officers of the Corps were promoted across the country by the federal government out of the 29,000 who wrote promotion examinations in 2023.

    They were promoted across various ranks and cadres in the Service.

    The Commandant General of the Corps, Dr Ahmed Audi had pushed for the promotion of the personnel before the Board, arguing that many of the Corps’ personnel had been stagnated for years.

    But the Board, Chaired by the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo approved 21,000 after their examinations.

    The Managing Editor of Northern Operations of The Nation Newspaper, Alhaji Yusuf Alli, was among the dignitaries who performed the decoration of the newly promoted officers at the Headquarters of the Command at Wuse, zone 5, Abuja.

    Other dignitaries who performed decoration were the Representatives of the Commandant-General, the FCT Director of the Department of States, DSS, the Director of FCT Fire Service Command, the Corps Marshal of the FRSC, FCT Command and House of Representatives members from the FCT.

    Alhaji Alli urged the beneficiaries to appreciate their promotion by re-dedicating themselves to the Service of the country, saying the promotion should be followed immediately with more hard work.

    The Commandant of the FCT Command, Olusola Odumosu in his remarks commended the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, and the Commandant-General of the Corps, Dr Ahmed Audi for the massive promotion under the present dispensation.

    Odumosu urged the newly decorated personnel to be diligent while discharging their duties.

    He said those who could not benefit from the exercise should not lose hope as the authorities are already aware of the need to clear the backlogs of promotion which the Commandant-General had made a cardinal point of his welfare policy in the Service.

    Five senior Officers were promoted from Assistant Commandant to Deputy Commandant in the FCT Command, while over 20 Officers were promoted from Chief Superintendents of the Corps to Assistant Commandants.

    Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Rivers State Command, has blamed the activities of pipeline vandals for the explosion which occurred in the state last weekend.

    Spokesman Olufemi Ayodele, who made this known in a statement in Port Harcourt yesterday, said the incident claimed 12 lives and destroyed four farmland, while others sustained injuries.

    The explosion occurred at Obrikom Obiafu 1 and 2, in Ogba Egbema Ndoni Local Government.

    Speaking about the explosion, the state NSCDC Commandant, Basil Igwebueze, said the explosion would not have occurred if the Nigerian Agip Oil Company pipelines were not vandalised by desperate individuals.

    In a historic ceremony held on Thursday, December 21, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Akwa Ibom State Command decorated over 300 deserving officers with new ranks, marking a significant achievement in the history of the corps.

    The event, presided over by the Akwa Ibom State NSCDC boss, Comdt Eluyemi Eluwade, became a testament to the dedication and hard work displayed by the officers in their recent promotion exercise.

    This was contained in a statement issued by the command’s public relations officer, SC Friday Ekerete, and sent to The nation.

    In his address, Comdt Eluwade commended the officers for their commitment and urged them to reciprocate the support extended by the minister of interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, and the Commandant General of NSCDC, Dr. Abubakar Ahmed Audi.

    Highlighting the magnitude of this achievement, Comdt Eluwade noted that the number of officers promoted in 2023 was the highest ever recorded since the establishment of the corps two decades ago.

    He emphasized the motivational impact of promotions, particularly for those who had patiently waited for 6-10 years on a single rank, underscoring the adage that “God’s time is the best.”

    Addressing the newly promoted officers, Comdt Eluwade reminded them that with greater responsibility comes higher expectations.

    He called upon them to exhibit dedication, loyalty, and commitment in fulfilling the core mandates of the corps, which include protecting lives, properties, critical infrastructures, and executing any task assigned to them as senior officers.

    The decoration ceremony saw the elevation of four officers to the position of Deputy Commandant of Corps, 15 officers to Assistant Commandant of Corps, 21 officers to Chief Superintendent of Corps, and 30 officers to Superintendent of Corps.

    Notable figures like the command’s spokesperson, SC Friday Ekerete, SC Kokoette Etefia Oladipo, and SC Mike Asibor were among those adorned with their new ranks.

    The ceremony was graced by the presence of distinguished personalities, including CC Mathew Olonisaye from the Federal Road Safety Corps, representatives from NDLEA, Nigeria Army, Nigeria Immigration, Nigeria Corrections, Nigeria Air Force, and CSP Nuhu Mathias from the Nigeria Police Quick Response Squad.

    The service commanders shared invaluable words of advice with the celebrants.

    Amidst an electrifying atmosphere, families turned out in large numbers to celebrate this momentous occasion with their loved ones, adding to the joyous ambiance at the NSCDC Akwa Ibom State Command headquarters.

    NSCDC deploys 25,000 personnel nationwide for Christmas celebrations

    The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has deployed 25,000 of its personnel to ensure the protection of lives, properties and critical infrastructure across the nation during the yuletide season.

    The Commandant General of the NSCDC Dr Ahmed Audi  directed all the Assistant Commandant General and the Commandant of the Corps in Charge of the zonal and state commands to comply with the directive. 

    He said it was imperative to ensure strategic and adequate deployment of personnel to ensure a peaceful and hitch-free celebrations during the Christmas and New Year festive period. 

    The CG,  in a statement signed by the Service Public Relations Officer, Babawale Afolabi, called for the implementation of comprehensive operational strategies, and robust and elaborate security arrangements throughout the country. 

    He said attentioned should be on the areas of core mandate of the Corps especially with massive deployment of armed personnel to all the locations of government critical infrastructure and national assets such as oil pipelines, electrical installations, airports, railway stations, and other government buildings.

    He said: “The Safe School Initiative Project will not be left out with the special Rapid Response Squad and the Female Squad will continue with their round-the-clock protection of the schools nationwide,

    “Other strategic officers such as the intelligent operatives, Agro Rangers Personnel, CG’s Special Intelligence Squad, Anti Vandal operatives the Rapid Response Squad among others will also be properly deployed to the flash points and black spots, recreational centres, markets, and places of worship,. 

    “The CG has however charged the senior officers to ensure that personnel deployed are adequately supervised for utmost professionalism in the discharge of their duties. 

    “The officers have also been warned to carry out their assigned duties with the utmost professionalism and adhere strictly to the rule of engagement as any officer found wanting will be properly defaulted.

    “The CG appealed to the officers on duty to Intensify the collaboration with other security agencies to ensure hitch-free celebrations. 

    “Audi however charged the general public to be law abiding and security conscious as well as to support security personnel by reporting any criminal activities and elements promptly.”

    Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Anambra State Command, has promoted its spokesperson, DSC Okadigbo Edwin, to the next rank of Superintendent of Corps (SC).

    Okadigbo was decorated with his new rank alongside 200 other newly- promoted officers of the command, who benefitted from the 2023 promotion recently released by the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB). 

    Performing the decorating ceremony at the state Command Headquarters, Awka, on behalf of the Commandant General of NSCDC, Dr. Abubakar Ahmed Audi, State Commandant, Mr Edwin Osuala, described their promotion as well deserved and reward for dedication and commitment to duties.

    Osuala congratulated the newly promoted officers, urging them to consider their new status as a challenge to do more, with a call to remain loyal, dedicated and committed to the service of protecting people’s lives and property.

    NSCDC operatives arrest illegal miners, others in Abuja

    Operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) FCT, Abuja Command have arrested two vandals of railway infrastructure and eleven illegal miners. 

    The two railway vandals were arrested by the Operatives of the Critical National Assets and Infrastructure unit of the command for willfully vandalizing rail tracks and traffic lights in Wuye Area of the territory.

    The Command in collaboration with the Nigerian Army  also arrested eleven suspects involved in illegal mining activities at Izom, a community located at the boundary of FCT and Niger State.

    Parading the suspects at the Command headquarters, Wuse Zone 5 , Abuja, the FCT Commandant, Olusola Odumosu said the proactive measures taken by the Command would serve as a deterrence to other criminals within the territory.

    Odumosu said: “Our effort is geared towards combating various forms of criminality, particularly vandalism of Critical National Assets and other public infrastructure, illegal mining activities and among others within the FCT.

    “We will continue to demonstrate zero tolerance to vandalism and there is no plan to retreat on this mission as they must all be brought to book.

    “I have vowed that there is no hiding place for evil perpetrators, so in this vein, active efforts are underway to apprehend their masterminds who are still at large.”

    According to Odumosu economic sabotage through illegal exploitation of the nation’s mineral resources not only pose serious threats to the ecosystem, but constitute grave danger to  the well-being of the host communities.

    The apprehended suspects are being investigated and would be subsequently charged to court as they are currently assisting with useful information that would determine their level of culpability or affiliation with other criminal syndicates notorious for illegal mining operations within the FCT, the FCT Commandant said. 

    The Commandant used the occasion to warn vandals of critical national assets such as the railways, illegal miners, one chance syndicate, scavengers, and kidnappers that such crimes activities would not be tolerated within the FCT anymore.
