    NSCDC Marine operatives intercept smugglers of rice

    Three suspected smugglers of 292 bags of foreign rice are now cooling their heels in the custody of operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) posted to the marine domain of the country.

    The suspects were arrested by the Commandant-General’s Marine monitoring team, Western Command, Eleko Beach, Lagos.

    They were said to have been arrested based on intelligence tip-off.

    The Commandant-General, Ahmed Audi has directed that the suspects and the 292 bags of rice be handed over to the appropriate security agency for further investigation and prosecution.

    According to the Public Relations Officer of the NSCDC, Afolabi Babawale, the suspects who were coming from Cotonou, Benin Republic aboard three wooden boats were intercepted by operatives of the Corps in charge of marine operations.

    He said the Commandant-General vowed that the corps would continue to pursue its statutory functions of protection of critical national assets and infrastructure, fight against vandals and vandalism, and economic saboteurs across the country.

    The Commandant-General noted that continued collaboration with other security agencies would be intensified against crime and criminality in the country.

    He directed that the suspects and exhibits be handed over to the Nigeria Customs Service for prosecution in line with the extant laws of the land after preliminary investigations are concluded.

    The Lagos state Commandant of the NSCDC, Comd’t Usman Ishaq Alfadarai has been directed to hand over the suspects and exhibits to the appropriate prosecuting agency at the NSCDC’s Marine Operational base, Ijora, Lagos State.

    NSCDC foils 30 attempts kidnap on school children

    The Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Ahmed Abubarka Audi, reported that his personnel successfully thwarted 30 criminal attempts to abduct school children nationwide.

    Speaking during the conclusion of the 5-Day Capacity Development Training for the Safe School Response Team in Nigeria at IBB Square in Makurdi, Benue State, Ahmed Audi stated that efforts to enhance capacity in preventing kidnappings of school children were progressing.

    He urged participants of the Safe School Response Team training program in the North Centre states to not only consider themselves as ambassadors of the project but also to demonstrate a high level of professionalism in executing their responsibilities.

    Audi described the Safe  School Response Project which is targeted at providing security schools to enhance learning described the project as the first of its kind in Africa and commended the coordinator, Tersoo Shaapera for providing quality leadership which led to the successful take-off and implementation of the project.

    According to him, siting the project in Benue state is also strategic because of the sustained farmer’s headers clash, and continued attacks by hoodlums on school facilities.

    In his keynote address, Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia, who was the Special Guest of Honour at the occasion stated that the initiative organized by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), underscores the importance of collaboration and proactive measures to ensure the safety and security of our educational institutions.

    Governor Alia, who donated an office accommodation for the project said: “The Safe School Initiative, which is a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Education, Civil Society Organisations, and security agencies, represents a beacon of hope for our educational institutions.

    “I have for long associated myself with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and I am very much satisfied with the key roles they have played in addressing the security challenges of the state, and I will continue with the collaboration.”

    Goodwill messages were delivered by notable figures including Senator George Akume, the Secretary of the Government of the Federation, the Director-General of the Nigeria Governor’s Forum, and the Minister of Interior, among others. They all commended the NSCDC for their dedicated efforts in enhancing school security to facilitate better learning environments.

    The Safe Response Team comprises members from Civil Defence, DSS, Vigilante Group, Private Security Guards, and the Police.

    NSCDC arrests pastor over visa scam in Ondo

    A self-acclaimed pastor, Micheal Ogundepo, has been arrested by operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

    Pastor Ogundepo was arrested when he was invited to collect N3m to process a visa for somebody.

    The N3m Visa job was bait to lure him out of hiding after one of his victims, Fagbuyiro Ajetomobi Yemi, reported him to the NSCDC.

    Pastor Ogundepo was said to have obtained the sum of N1.6m from Miss Fagbuyiro.

    The spokesman of the Ondo NSCDC, Aidamenbor Daniel, said Pastor Ogundepo seized Fagbuyiro’s passport and converted her money for personal use thereby denying her the opportunity to apply for another Visa.

    He said: “The command invited the suspect severally, but he declined the invitation. He claimed to be outside the country and used a fake international number to call the complainant as a disguise.

    “Investigation has revealed that he has duped several other unsuspecting clients, thereby committing an offence punishable under the Criminal Code contrary to section 419 of Criminal Code Law, Cap 37, Vol. 1 of Ondo State, 2006 and punishable under the same section.”

    NSCDC arrests five persons in Jos over adulterated fertilizer

    The Special Intelligence Squad of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested five suspects in Jos, Plateau state, for alleged mass production of fake fertilizers.

    The Corps said the syndicate was arrested following intelligence gathering about their activities which is inimical to government programmes for food security in the country.

    The syndicate also specialized in the diversion of granular ammonium sulphate, the key raw material in the production of fertilizer.

    According to the Public Relations Officer of the NSCDC, Afolabi Babawale, the diverted granular ammonium sulphate that is used in the production of fertilizer is a property of fertilizer producers and the Suppliers Association of Nigeria (FEPSAN). 

    The Corps said the syndicate diverted, re-bagged and sold the products to unsuspected buyers and farmers at the rate of 25,900 naira per bag.

    He said: “On the 2nd September 2023 at about 1720hrs, the Commandant General’s Special Intelligence Squad, acting on a credible intelligence burst two separate locations; No 3, Dogon Dutse area, Jos North and Kasuwa Kara area, Bukuru all in Jos Plateau State and succeeded in the recovery of large quantities of diverted bags of Granular Ammonium Sulphate ( GAS).

    “The products are meant to be used for the production of fertilizer and to be sold at subsidized rate to the farmers in the federal government bid to sustain the national food security programme and encourage food production in the country.”

    Babawale explained further that five suspects were arrested from the two separate locations and large bags of different fertilizer products materials were recovered.

    The PRO said: “The arrested suspects are Ibrahim Muhammed, 63, Ladan Anas, 26, Umar Said Muhammed, 37, Hambale Usman, 46, and Junaid Ubale, 30.

    “Among the exhibit recovered are 740 bags of prohibited granular ammonium sulphate, 24 bags of Urea Dangote fertilizers, 65 bags of indorama fertilizers, 130 bags of NPK Barbados fertilizers, 29 cartons of ultrachol chemical, 109 (20) litres of knapsack spraying pump among other items.”

    Babawale also disclosed that the Commandant General of the NSCDC, Dr. Ahmed Audi has been briefed on the matter and has ordered the immediate transfer of the five suspects and the case file to the national headquarters of the Corps for further action.

    NSCDC, Police, DSS, others arrest 34 illegal sand miners in Rivers

    The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Police, the Department of State Security Service (DSS) and the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) have commenced a joint security operation to rid Rivers State of the activities of illegal sand miners.

    In one of the operations led by the patrol team of NSCDC Solid Minerals Unit, the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel and Ministerial Task Force on Illegal Mining, 34 suspects were apprehended at Rumuokarali/ Rumualogu community in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Rivers State.

    The Rivers State Commandant of the corps,  Basil Igwebueze, who confirmed the development in a statement signed by the Rivers NSCDC Public Relations Officer, Olufemi Ayodele, paraded the suspects in Port Harcourt.

    He said while conducting the operation, the NSCDC operatives also nabbed one Daniel Mathew for luring a 15-year-old girl to a Hotel in China, near Port Harcourt and tried to defile her.

    Igwebueze said during the raid, a Chinese, notorious for illegal sand dredging, escaped the scene through the back gate of a hotel adding that the arrest was made possible through credible intelligence.

    Igwebueze said that the operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Department of State Services (DSS), the Police and the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) were part of the operation.

    He said: “With the collaborative efforts of our men, the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel and Ministerial Task Force on Illegal Mining comprising the EFCC, NSCDC, DSS, Nigeria Police, Immigration Service and Nigerian, the 34 suspects were caught in the act of dredging sharp sands illegally thereby causing environmental degradation in the area and three dredging machines were retrieved at the crime scene.

    “In addition, a Chinese man was sighted at the scene of the crime as information revealed that he is notorious for engaging in illegal mining activities.

    “He, however, escaped through the back gate of a nearby hotel in Choba, Obio/Akpo Local Government Area.

    “While tracing the suspect, our personnel heard the cry of a young lady who said her sister aged 15 had been lured into one of the hotel rooms.

    “After a thorough search our men were able to rescue the 15-year-old girl from the hand of one Mr. Daniel Mathew who is now in custody and currently under interrogation.”

    The State Commandant said thorough investigations would be carried out to ascertain the level of involvement of each suspect, after which they would be charged to court.

    Igwebueze, advised members of the public to report all acts of criminality or suspicious movement in their neighbourhood to the NSCDC and other security agencies for prompt action.

    The commandant assured residents that any information volunteered would be treated with utmost confidentiality, saying, “If you see something please say something.”

    The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the police, the Department of State Security Service (DSS), and the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) have commenced a joint security operation to rid Rivers State of the activities of illegal sand miners.

    NSCDC to treat Abuja man-holes thieves as armed robbers

    The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Olusola Odumosu has said the Corps would henceforth treat manhole thieves and street light vandals in Abuja as armed robbers.

    Odumosu said the Corps would fully implement the mandate of new FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike to flush out vandals, manholes thieves and other criminals from the city.

    While addressing all personnel, including Area Commanders and Divisional Officers (DOs) across the Area councils in the FCT, Odumosu said NSCDC Commandant-General (CG), Dr Abubakar Ahmed Audi, was dedicated to ensuring results.

    Odumosu, in a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of the Command, Comfort Okomanyi, said the FCT Minister had tasked the Corps alongside sister agencies in the territory to provide proper security and rid the city of crimes.

    “It is high time we worked together to put an end to these nefarious acts because these criminals are beginning to feel too comfortable in sabotaging the asset of the country,” he said.

    Quoting Wike, Odumosu added: “The people who steal manhole covers, don’t see them as just people who steal but treat them as armed robbers. When you do that, they will run away”.

    He urged officers and men of the Corps to work tirelessly in ensuring that citizens and all critical infrastructure of the FCT were free of vandalism and other nefarious activities.

    “The Minister has promised to provide us with the necessary tools to work and we must give him good results because as your Commandant, I wouldn’t tolerate any excuses for failure,” he said.

    The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Adamawa  State has arrested an alleged fake Optometrist operating in Yola.

    Addressing newsmen yesterday in Yola, the state Commandant of the corps, Mr Nuraddeen Abdullahi, said the suspect, Imuere Ejiro, before his arrest, was allegedly rendering services in two private clinics in Yola.

    Abdullahi said the suspect was arrested in possession of photocopies of academic qualification belonging to his younger brother.

    He said the suspect was once arrested in Lagos by the Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians’ Registration Board of Nigeria, which fined him N200,000.

    The commandant, who called for more public support to security agencies in the state, said there was a joint operation going on with other agencies to make things difficult for criminals in the state.

    “The NSCDC has also sent some of its personnel to training as Agro-Rangers to contain farmers/herders conflicts in the state,” Abdullahi said.

    Reacting to his arrest, the suspect said he operated in Taraba, Lagos and Adamawa states before his arrest.

    Ejiro, who insisted that he was a qualified optometrist, said his arrest in Lagos was because he was practising without registration.

    “The board asked me to pay a registration fee of N255,000 and I have so far made part payment of N65,000 to the board,” the suspect said.

    Meanwhile, the Adamawa branch Chairman of Nigerian Optometric Association, Dr Okafor Ikechukwu, said the association had made contacts and discovered that the suspect was a quack.

    “He is a quack and impostor who has been defrauding citizens of Adamawa State of their hard-earned money and at the same time putting their eyesight at risk by prescribing lens which is not licensed,” Ikechukwu said.

  • NSCDC set to prosecute illegal private guard companies

    The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) says it is set to arrest and prosecute illegal Private Guard Companies (PGC) operating within Nigeria.

    This is contained in a news release made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) by Soji Alabi, Media Assistant to Abdullahi Gana, Commandant General (CG) of the Corps on Monday in Abuja.

    The CG made the statement while addressing Helen Amakiri, Assistant Commandant -General in charge of Private Guard Companies.

    Gana warned that the Corps was ready to arrest, prosecute and clamp down on illegal private guard company operators and their employers.

    According to him, the Corps has observed with dismay, the use of unlicensed Private Security Guard Companies and in- house Private Guards by institutions and organisations in the country.

    “Institutions and organisations such as places of worship, Educational Institutions, Companies, Hotels, and some government establishments that recruit illegal guards are hereby warned.

    “ We observe they sew uniforms for them to wear in securing their premises without license or approval from NSCDC.

    “They are hereby informed that they are operating illegally and are advised to desist from this act and engage the services of duly registered and licensed private security companies,” he said.

    He said  the illegal operation of some PGCs was contrary to the provision of Section 23 of the Private Guard Companies Regulation of 2018, which stated that;

    “Any person or corporate entity wishing to employ more than one person for the purpose stated in Section 1 of the ACT shall engage the services of a licensed company.”

    He further said that the establishment of the 2018 PGC regulations was in pursuant of the corps mandate to rid  private security sector of quackery.

    He said that after the warning, those illegal PGC operators who would refuse to comply with the corps regulations, should be ready to face the wrath of law.

    NAN reports that security guard companies found with expired licences would have their offices sealed and before unsealing them, the operators would pay a fine of N200,000 for a Grade A offence and N100,000 for a Grade B offence.

  • NSCDC deploys 500 armed personnel to worship centres

    The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Borno State has deployed 500 armed personnel to various worship   centres in Maiduguri, to enhance security and safety.

    Commandant of the Corps, Mr Ibrahim Abdullahi, made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday.

    Abdullahi said the deployment was imperative as part of the modalities towards protecting worshippers from unsuspected suicide bomb attacks during the Holy month of Ramadan.

    “The Command has placed security measures to compliment the efforts of other securities agencies to guarantee protection of lives and property of all residents in the state during and after Ramadan fast,” he said.

    He said the team included, men of the anti-riot squad, bomb detection and disposal unit as well as intelligence and detective unit.

    Abdullahi urged residents of Maiduguri to be security conscious following the recent unfortunate incidents of suicide bombing at the outskirts of Maiduguri.

    He also tasked the people to be observant of suspicious persons and strange objects in their worship centres environment, market, business centres, shop malls and report immediately to  security agencies  for prompt intervention.
